A recent paper says marine ice cliff instability won't happen because the ice is strong enough to support mile high cliffs. No way!!! That ice is full of cracks and crevices, mullion holes and channels, air pockets and sheer margins. Expect rapid and catastrophic sea level rise once the grounding lines of marine terminating glaciers retreat into retrograde slopes. That process is happening to one of Greenland's largest glaciers, Sermeq Kujalleq right now. That glacier drains the southern ice sheet that sits below sea level. Once the ocean gets under the ice sheet it will collapse. Picture a giant slurpee in a warm swimming pool on a July afternoon.

It would be beneficial to define what science truly is. Recently, discussions seem more focused on gender and skin color than actual scientific issues. Many protestors contribute little beyond repetitive assertions about CO2 harming the planet and human impact. But does anyone genuinely believe that speeches and waving flags will make a real change? Regardless, of the number of flags, or the diversity of voices, the planet will continue its orbit around the Sun, unaffected by anger or frustration. The Sun rises for everyone.

It's great to read about the amazing, positive experiences that these ECRs had on the JR. What a blessing!

I'm not NSF, so I don't claim to know all the inside football, but I'm not sure it's fair to talk about "NSF's decision" as if it was made in a vacuum. NSF has had, and continues to have, the same annual funding for ocean drilling that it's always had. The money that has fallen away over the years is the international partners' contributions. Maybe you can argue that NSF could or should have "found" extra money somewhere else in its budget, but that of course means that some other program would feel the same excruciating loss that ocean drilling is feeling now.

It's certainly a difficult loss, but there's more to US ocean drilling than the JR. There's still a U.S. program. Opportunities to sail won't be as frequent, but let's not throw in the towel.
