Rock music has always been the anthem of the bold, the voice of the rebellious, and the soul of the free-spirited. It’s as diverse as it is dynamic, with subgenres that cater to every taste, from the classic rock ballads to the gritty garage riffs. For those who carry the spirit of rock in their hearts, here’s a lineup of six rock radio stations that will keep the fire of rock ‘n’ roll burning bright.

Germany’s go-to rock station since 1995. Rock Antenne plays everything from classic rock to hard rock and metal, broadcasting from Bavaria. They also run themed streams for heavy metal, alternative, and softer rock if you want to narrow things down. A solid pick for work or a long drive.

The only Triple-A (Adult Album Alternative) station in the New York area. The Peak mixes classic rock with modern alternative, plus some blues and reggae. Broadcasting from Westchester County, they’ve been playing six decades of rock—from The Beatles to Black Keys—since 2004. Worth a listen if you like variety in your rock.

An internet-only station dedicated to classic rock. Best Net Radio plays the hits and deep cuts from the genre’s golden era, running 24/7 without interruptions. Good background music when you want something familiar.

Part of the HD-Radio Network out of Wisconsin, this stream focuses on classic rock from the ’60s through the ’80s—Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Eagles, and their peers. No commercials, just continuous rock. Available worldwide via their website or most internet radio apps.

A Bulgarian station that broadcasts rock hits around the clock. Radio 1 Rock covers a wide range of rock styles and streams online 24/7. A good option if you’re looking to hear rock from a different part of the world.

Baltimore’s public radio station for music lovers. WTMD plays adult album alternative—a mix of indie, rock, folk, and Americana—and they’re known for breaking new artists before anyone else. They also run free concerts in the park during summer. If you like discovering music, this one’s for you.
In the universe of music, rock has its own galaxy, filled with stars that shine with the intensity of electric guitar solos and the depth of powerful vocals. These six stations provided by Eter are your starships, ready to take you on an interstellar journey through the world of rock. Whether your preference is for the timeless tunes of the ’70s, the headbanging hits of the ’80s, or the innovative sounds of today’s rock, these stations have it all. So let your hair down, air-guitar at the ready, and rock on! Visit the Eter site to find out more!

]]>From day one of building Eter, we knew that as a radio streaming app, it had to be intuitive and accessible—not just for the average user, but especially for those who are blind or visually impaired.
Apple’s developer frameworks, both UIKit and SwiftUI, offer powerful tools to help make apps accessible—most notably through the built-in VoiceOver screen reader. In fact, many SwiftUI components support VoiceOver right out of the box. But creating a truly accessible experience goes beyond ticking technical checkboxes. For sighted developers, it’s a real challenge to fully understand how someone who navigates the world through touch and sound interacts with an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Mac.
Eter quickly gained recognition within the blind community after launch. And while we were honored by the positive reception, we also took to heart the candid feedback about where our VoiceOver implementation fell short.
One of the first in-depth—and deeply appreciated—reviews came from the Polish accessibility blog Moja Szuflada (My Drawer):
https://mojaszuflada.pl/eter-radio-czyli-radio-na-nadgarstku/
Much of Eter’s progress in accessibility is thanks to the support and dedication of the blind and low-vision community—especially Dennis Long, who consistently offered clear, constructive insights into what wasn’t working and how it could be improved. His feedback helped shape Eter into the accessible experience it is today.
Recently, Eter was also featured on AppleVis, the go-to platform for blind and visually impaired Apple users:
https://www.applevis.com/apps/ios/music/eter-streaming-internet-radio
This journey has deeply expanded our understanding of how crucial accessibility is—not as a feature, but as a core responsibility. We now approach every part of our app with one guiding principle: it must be usable by everyone.
And we’re just getting started. We’re constantly evolving Eter to ensure that every new feature not only enhances the listening experience but also works seamlessly with VoiceOver and other accessibility tools built into iOS and macOS.

]]>The post Shazam in Eter: See What’s Playing appeared first on Streaming Internet Radio app for iOS, Mac, CarPlay, Apple TV & Apple Watch.
]]>Eter: Streaming Internet Radio now includes Shazam song recognition. Read on to learn what Shazam is, how it works in Eter, how to turn it off if it’s not your thing and more.
Shazam is an ambient music recognition service that listens to what’s playing and identifies track details. It’s like having a super savvy music buff friend always there to ask “What’s this song?” or “Who sings it?”. This amazing audio search algorithm was originally created by Chris Barton and Philip Inghelbrecht, then graduate students at University of California Berkeley, in 1999. Eight years later, Apple acquired the technology, bringing Shazam in house and integrating it into Siri in iOS8. Hey Siri, what’s playing?
Eter displays song title and artist using the track information sent in the currently playing station stream. Not all stations provide this information, and some that do provide it do so in an unusual format, making it difficult for Eter to format. Using Shazam, Eter can listen to a stream and learn which song metadata to display. Neither relying on stream metadata nor Shazam is perfect, but Shazam is generally better, which is why it’s turned on by default.
When you first use Shazam in Eter, you’ll be asked for permission to let Eter access the microphone. This lets Shazam hear the music, so please select Allow.
On Mac, you’ll see an orange microphone icon in the menu bar indicating the microphone is in use, in this case by Eter, redirecting the stream to Shazam to learn what’s playing. On iOS, active microphone use is indicated by a small orange dot in the upper right corner of the screen. Note that Shazam doesn’t actually listen to the microphone on the device, only to the audio stream from the app. But Shazam requires microphone access to function, which is why it’s requested.
Tip: Ever come across a song you like that you want to hear again? Just tap or click on the song art in Eter’s player view to open it in Apple Music.
You can switch off Shazam from any station’s player view. This disables Shazam for just that station. By default, Shazam is enabled on every station.
You can turn off Shazam for a Recommended station but the next time you select that station, Shazam will be re-enabled (and you can again disable it if you so wish). Stations you play directly from search work this way too. If you want to be able to save a station’s Shazam setting, select the heart to add it to My Stations. Note that saving favorites is a premium feature, along with lots more, including setting a sleep timer, looking back at your listening history, and supporting the continued development of Eter. Unlock all premium features with a single one-time purchase of just $8.99.
Using connected hearing aids?
Some users report problems with Eter when using hearing aids. We suspect the issue relates to both Eter and the hearing aids attempting to redirect the streaming audio. Thank you to those who wrote into support about this; we’re continuing to investigate.
