Dates
The hybrid event will be held in person and online on December 5th and 6th, 2024. Teams will then have until January 8th, 2025 to complete the project.
Eligibility
This hackathon is open to anyone over 18 years old. Whether you're a student, a professional, or simply passionate about climate change and technology, we welcome you to join us and make a difference.
Project and Submission Requirements
To participate and qualify for judging, teams must adhere to the following project and submission requirements:
-
Team Composition: Teams can have up to 5 members. Each member must be over 18 years old and registered for the hackathon.
-
Technology Stack: The platform should utilize open-source frameworks where possible. Participants are encouraged to use Python, JavaScript, or other widely-used programming languages to ensure ease of integration and collaboration.
-
Data Sources: Use citizen-collected climate data from TARTLE, NOAA's public climate data, and any other publicly available datasets that add value to the project.
-
Bias Detection Implementation: Clearly document the methods used for bias detection, including statistical models, Bayesian analysis, or multi-method approaches. Explain why these methods were chosen and how they contribute to data integrity.
-
Explainable AI Model: The AI model must provide clear, explainable outputs. Teams must use tools like LIME, SHAP, or Feature Importance Scores to demonstrate how the model arrives at its predictions. Include documentation explaining how these tools were applied.
-
Visualization Features: The final platform must include interactive visualizations such as heat maps, time-series charts, and geospatial mapping. These visualizations should help users intuitively understand local climate changes and AI predictions.
-
Ethical Considerations: Provide a summary of how ethical AI principles, including data privacy, informed consent, and transparency, were addressed in the project.
-
Submission Format:
-
Code Repository: Submit a link to a GitHub or similar code repository with clear documentation and instructions for setup and usage.
-
Demo Video: Create a 3-5 minute video that demonstrates your platform's key features, explains the technology stack, and showcases how it addresses the challenge.
-
Pitch Presentation: Prepare a short slide deck (up to 10 slides) that provides an overview of your solution, the problem it solves, the technical approach, and the impact on local climate understanding.
-
Final Report: Submit a written report (up to 5 pages) summarizing the project, including details on bias detection, AI model explainability, visualization features, and adherence to ethical practices.
