Justin's Guide to Toronto

The definitive guide about Toronto from someone who is not from Toronto, but actually loves Toronto

It might not be home but it's got my heart.

The winters suck and people pronounce all the street names strangely, but other than that, Toronto is an amazing city that I have fallen in love with in my 3 years of living there. While New York City is the greatest city in the world, Toronto will forever have a place in my heart.

Last Updated: March 27, 2020

As you can see from my map above… 1. I love the flagging feature of Google Maps  and 2. There are still many more places that I want to go to than I already have been to. I’ve broken up the following into Things to Do by area then What to Eat in each of those areas. I would just focus on where to eat, but I guess you need something to fill the time between meals.

Things To Do

Just like any city, each neighborhood has their own vibe. What I love about Toronto is that all these neighborhoods of downtown are so accessible especially via a bike, or in my case, an electric skateboard.

CN Tower

… obviously if you’re coming for the first time, you have to visit the most touristy of tourist things, and go to the top of the CN tower. The area around it is fine. You can walk around the Sky Dome and eventually make your way down too.

Harbourfront

From the CN tower, you could walk down to the Habourfront and walk along and enjoy views and weather if it’s nice. The waterfront of Toronto is lovely and extends pretty far. If you are up for renting a Bixbie (Citi) bike, then you should ride the waterfront all the way down to the Humber Bridge for a gorgeous view of Toronto’s skyline.

JE HOT TIP

If you’re exploring around the Waterfront, make your way over to Trillium Park. The view from Humber Bay Bridge is better, but this is more accessible and still beautiful.

Nathan Philips Square

It’s city hall and it also has a big ass TORONTO sign to take a picture in front of. Seeing this place should only take 10 minutes, but if you go, you can get your picture then visit the Eaton Centre across the street and do some shopping? Might as well take advantage of the exchange rate, right? Also if you are up there then you can go to Yonge Dundas Square… which Canadians claim is the Times Square of Toronto… I can assure you, it is not. But if you’re there, you might as well. Map

Graffit Alley and Queen West

This area is nice to just walk along and see some hipster shops. Graffitti alley is also cool as the art is kinda cool too. It’s nice to go window shop from University and make your way out to Ossington which is super hip… speaking of…

Ossington

Super hip area that has some of my favorite bars in the city. It’s fun during the day to go to coffee shops and also at night to go to the bars that I’ve listed.  Map

St Lawrence Market

It’s a market… you get food. If you go, then you have to get a Peameal Bacon sandwich which is iconic Canada. Map

Distillery District

I’m not exactly sure how to describe this area… it’s cool because it’s all brick and used to be a distillery, and they’ve transformed it into a hip spot. There is a chocolate maker (SOMA), hipster coffee (Balzac’s), and Mill St Brewery but not really much else outside of the area. I only ever go to Distillery for the Christmas Market and Festival of Lights… neither of which will likely be going on if you (the reader) is going. Map

Kensington Market

MEGA hip area in downtown. Not sure how else to describe it but when you walk around there, you’ll understand. Map

…and when it’s WARM!

Out of the 3 cities I’ve lived in, Toronto is my favorite city to be in for the summertime. Because it’s so cold for so long, the entire population of the city has an appreciation for warm weather unlike any other. The active waterfront, useable greenspace, and outdoor venues bring the city out of hibernation.  The warmth breathes an undeniable life to the city and can thaw even the iciest of hearts.

Trinity Bellwoods Park

Hipster central. When the weather is nice, you can be sure that almost all the green space in this park is packed with blankets, slack lines, and drinks. Grab a blanket and find a spot under the shade to spend the day with your furbaby, a kindle, and a good drink. Map

The Beaches

This was a recent revelation to me, but volleyball at the beaches has become one of my most enjoyable experiences in Toronto. They have poles available to set up over 100 courts, and it is packed every weekend with volleyball enthusiasts. Even if you don’t know anyone with a net, you can show up and find yourself a game. It became a Thursday night and Saturday afternoon staple for me, and it is definitely one of the things I miss most about the city. Map

Centre Island

I don’t know anything about the history of the island, or how people can actually live here year round. What I do know is that when the weather is good, taking a ferry over to the island (with a bicycle if you have one) is a great way to spend a weekend day. You can either spend more on a private water taxi or head down to the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal for the official city ferry to hitch a ride over.

The Budweiser Stage

If there happens to be an artist playing at the Budweiser Stage in Ontario place while you are there, I highly recommend watching the show. Lawn seats are usually pretty reasonable and you can usually snag a resale on FB for even cheaper. I love the open air, music, and the view of downtown. I never thought I’d have a favorite venue, but it seems that I do!

Where to Eat

Now this is what I’m talking about. TORONTO IS AN AMAZING FOOD CITY. I could easily go on and on, but let’s just start with these.

College St

This is my favorite area in Toronto for cocktail bars and restaurants. There are a number of BOLD statements and serious favorites in this list. Come see me.

  • Bar Raval – This bar has a gorgeous countertop as well as a nice patio area and serves delicious small bites AND great drinks. I recommend the smoked mackarel and Stracciatella & Boquerones. Map
  • PG Clucks – A hole in the wall that has the BEST Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich that I have EVER had. Bold statement worthy of the bold flavor. Map
  • Hotmess – They do Tex Mex and they do it well. I was surprised too… Tex Mex in Canada? Go figure. Hit them up on Taco Tuesday for a deal on their tacos and beer! Map
  • Walton – They have an amazing back patio (self proclaimed “Cutest in the world”) and serve really great drinks. I always end up stopping by and put down a Spicy Honey Boi or two. Map
  • Pray Tell – they also have a great patio and their drinks are good too. Not as nice of a patio as the walton with a more limited drink selection but at happy hour they are good! Map

Not exactly on College but it’s in the vicinity and it MUST be called out.

Cocktail Bar – They make BOMB cocktails … specifically one peanut butter old fashioned that I am obsessed with. Whenever I made my way home from College back to my apartment, I stopped here. I LOVE THIS PLACE. It is my SECOND favorite cocktail bar in Toronto… where is my first? Check out my outerlying areas section to find out! Map

Kensington Market / Chinatown
  • 7 Lives – Amazing fish tacos. I often have a hard time deciding between Baja and Crispy, so I usually get both. Map
  • Rol San – They serve Dim Sum all day and late into the night. I usually go up to Markham for my Dim Sum, but if I have a craving downtown, this is where I go. Map
  • Shi MiaoDao Rice Noodle – I don’t actually go to Chinatown too often for food, but this rice noodle spot has made my list of places I’d go back to. Their stone pot soups are great especially when it’s cold out. Map
  • Coffee Dak Lak – When I visited Vietnam, I got REALLY into egg coffee. They make a great egg coffee here, and considering the exchange rate, it’s a decent deal. I stop by whenever I walk past it! Map
King West (ish) and Downtown
  • Aloette – This is one of my most favorite places in Toronto. They don’t take reservations so you put your name down then expect to wait for an hour or so until your seats are ready. They are descendant of the number 1 place to eat in toronto (alo) …. their menu is delicious but it is expensive. Map
  • Gusto – Standard Italian with $1/oz wine pours on wednesdays. Map
  • Pai – A friend of mine who lived in Thailand for 9 years said that this is the best Thai he’s had outside of Thailand. I personally love the Pad Graw Pow with extra crispy pork, and I ask for it Thai spicy and eat it in the quiet of my on apartment with my sweat rag.  Map
  • Baro – Hip bar that has multiple floors including a rooftop and a secret speakeasy that you need to know the password to in order to enter. Map
  • Barhop – There are two locations. One has a rooftop and the other has a real small patio but both have a great list of beers. Great spot to hang out. Map
  • Watsons – Kind of a divey and young people’s bar BUT they serve a fine selection of whiskey’s and scotch for cheap… I’m talking an Oban for $9 CAD cheap. Yea… I’ve been here a couple of times. Map
  • 416 Snack bar – Not quite king west but close enough that I’ll throw it here. Their snacks are great, the food is delicious, and the vibe is chill. Map
Ossington
  • Oddseoul – Love this place. its Korean fusion bar with great drinks. When you go here, get the Jucy Lucy and their bulgogi cheesesteak. Get everything else that you’re interested in, but definitely get those two. Love it! Map
  • Gift Shop – Across the street from Oddseoul, there is a bar behind a barber shop that serves up good cocktails. I heard this place was closing… so it might be gone by now! Map
  • Pho Tien Thanh – The best Pho spot downtown I’d go to. They’re cash only, and worth a stop if you can’t get to one around the airport in Mississauga. Map
Eaton Centre / Nathan Philips Square
  • GB Hand Pulled Noodles – Tiny shop serving you fresh hand pulled noodles. Get the Special Lanzhou Beef Noodles (L) with Narrow Thick noodz. If you do for a dry noodle, a medium wide will work well to let the flavor get all up on them.  Map
  • Kimchi Korea House – This is the first place that I ever had Gamjatang (Pork Bone Soup) so naturally I think it is the best here. It’s apparently their most popular item and they serve heaps of it every day.  Map
  • Gyubee Japanese Grill – An all you can eat Japanese BBQ where you grill it in front of you. This place is ALWAYS packed so just put your name down on the Yelp Waitlist at 6pm and come back an hour later when it’s your time to eat.  Map
Parkdale / Queen West

I don’t know what you are doing out here, but if you find yourself in the area, I do have a couple recommendations you GOTTA go to!

  • Tennessee Tavern – This place has nothing to do with Tennessee and it is only loosely related to a tavern. It got the thumbs up from my German coworker for German food and that is a seal of approval you can trust when it comes to rating schnitzel, brats, and other Eastern European treats. Map
  • Craigs Cookies – $3 or $4 for a cookie seems ridiculous … until you remember it’s CAD and that these cookies are the BOMB. Map
  • Glory Hole Donuts – Best donut shop in Toronto. If you like donuts and are out there, stop in.  Map
Outlying Areas (WORTH CONSIDERATION)

The following places are a bit of a hike and may or may not need a car to get to. They are however worth mentioning and considering because they are THAT good (or unique).

  • Adamson’s BBQ – This is THE BEST BBQ outside of Texas that I’ve EVER had. Not sure if the owners were from Texas or visited Texas, but they make BBQ right. Not sure if you’d be interested in having BBQ while in Canada, but if you’re in the area or are curious, it’s totally worth a stop. It’s annoying to get to by public transportation, so I’d recommend a car. Map
  • Civil Liberties – This is my favorite cocktail bar in Toronto. While you don’t need a car to get there, it is a bit further out than convenient. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t have a menu and you just tell them what you like or are feeling, and they have NAILED my drink EVERY TIME. I once said that I had a sore throat but like spirit forward whiskey drinks… nailed it. Map

  • Fishman Lobster Clubhouse –  Lobster and crab mountains. You definitely need a car to get here, but it is an experience worth the effort. Best enjoyed with 4 to 6 friends so you can really ball out on the amount of lobsters and crabs. It’s expensive. It’s hard to get to. It’s worth it.  Map
  • Markham in general – If you’ve already got a car, then you might as well go up to Markham for the best Chinese food in Ontario. Go get some Dim Sum and swing by an HK tea house. If you make it to Markham, swing by Din Tai Fung. Aside from their famous soup dumplings, they have this one fish and egg dish with broccoli that I could never find anywhere else… even in the original Din Tai Fung.

My Absolute Faves

If you were to hold a gun to my head and force me to choose a Top 3 of favorites in Toronto, I’d pull the trigger. If I had to choose 5, I wouldn’t be happy but they’d be below. I have written about all these in the list above, but in case you didn’t read, let me opine about these select few.

1. PG Cluck’s

The BEST HOT CHICKEN SANDWICH I’ve ever had. It’s crispy, juicy, spicy, and huge! If you can get your mouth around it, it’ll be one of the most satisfying crunches you’ll ever chomp down on. Forget Chik-fil-A. Move over Popeyes. It’s not even close.

2. Kamjatang (Pork Bone Soup)

Toronto was the first place that I was introduced to pork bone soup, and it was a revelation. Kimchi House on Dundas was the first place I ever had it, which may or may not be the reason why I think it’s the best. It’s messy and difficult to eat, but maybe that’s what makes it even better.

3. Aloette

This is one of my favorite places to take someone from out of town. Downstairs from Alo, it’s fine dining in a casual atmosphere. They don’t take reservations, but they do call you back once your table is ready. I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve had there and fortunately, they change their menu up with the seasons making sure there was something new for me to try each time I went.

4. Pai

This isn’t a secret by any means, but they are popular for a reason. They ALWAYS have a line, so I mostly get take out, which is for the best. I like to order Thai spicy and eat in my place with my sweat towel handy. Get there early when they open or just pick it up on Ritual. However, you get it, get it.

5. Adamson’s BBQ

Like I said above, you wouldn’t think about Texas BBQ while visiting Canada, but they are LEGIT. Honestly, I’m not sure if it’s just my American pride holding me back from saying it’s the best I’ve had, but it’s for real and I made sure to stop here before I left Toronto.

Well there you have it

I’ll miss you Toronto!

Big Island

June, 2018

Sharp rocks, black sand, and LAVA!

Duration: 4 days, 3 nights
Island: Hawai’i, HA

We came here to see a volcano and that is what we did! While there are still plenty of beautiful beaches to lounge on, the highlight of this island was the time we spent exploring Volcanoes National Park. I was almost a huge wimp, but Nessa pushed me out of my comfort zone and got me to hike through the razor sharp lava fields in the dark so that we could see lava up close.

Things To Do

1. Volcanoes National Park

This is the main attraction of the island and it is hype. Just like in Kauai, I stayed two nights in this park and camped under the auspicious glow of the volcano.

2. Holei Sea Arch

The arch itself was fine, but the drive down was pretty cool. You drive through the park all the way down to the water, and once you get to the end, you have the option to walk to see the lava flows and where they hit the ocean. However, when we went, we were told that the best way to do this was to head to the next location below…

3. See Lava!

You have to drive out of the park and around the island to this area. You park your car and then rent a bike to get to the edge of the ocean where you then walk to see the lava. Not sure if this has changed since all the eruptions, but I recommend renting a bike and doing this near dusk so that you can hike and see the lava in the dark. Bring flashlights, headlamps, hiking boots, and lots of water. I almost wussed out but nessa pushed me to keep hiking in the dark to see lava. IT WAS DOPE.

4. Pololu Valley Lookout

On the other side of the island, there is a cool lookout and cool beach. From what I remember, you won’t regret using your hiking boots to get down to the beach here.

5. Mauna Kea Beach

This beach is tucked into the Mauna Kea hotel area. It’s a bit intimidating going into their complex without being a guest, but you totally can and you totally should.

Best Food & Drink

1. Minnie’s Ohana Lim Style

We didnt really eat at many places here, but one that I remember stopping at on our way to Pololu Valley Lookout was Minnie’s

June, 2018

Camping, camping, and camping

Duration: 5 days, 4 nights
Island: Kauai, HA

Kauai was my favorite island in terms of beach’s and being outdoors. We camped several nights on this island on the beach and KoKe’e state park. I can hardly describe how amazing it was so I’ll just include this video of the helicopter flying into jurassic park.

Things To Do

1. Kalalau Trail and Na Pali Coast

This iconic trail can take multiple days to hike. We only did a return trip to a beach and back which was amazing. I recommend having real hiking boots for this trek and as always, bring/wear a bathing suit so you can take a dip in the water. My friend and his wife highly suggested a helicopter tour, so that could be something to look into because if you can’t do it on your honeymoon, when can you?

2. Haena Park with Cannon’s Beach and Makua Beach

Along the way to the Kalalau trail head, stop at this beach. Parking can be a drag, but its very picturesque with the mountains in the background. There is snorkeling to be had here as well! Map

3. Secret Kauapea Beach

I don’t know how secret a secret beach is when it’s marked on Google. but it’s a beautiful beach none the less. Parking is okay on the street to the trailhead and the black sand at the bottom was great. You MIGHT be able to do the hike in flip flops, but it definitely makes it easier if you’re wearing at least runners if not hiking boots. Map

4. Polihale State Park

We rushed the beach here as we only stopped here for sunset on our way to the campsite. It’s a sweet beach and there were a bunch of people off roading on it. I enjoyed the 15-30 minutes we had on it. Map

5. Koke’e State Park

Kalalau Lookout / Pu’u o Kill Lookout – The hikes here were awesome! It was kinda crazy hiking so high up, but the views were amazing. i have no idea what it would be like to have to travel to the trail head then hike since we slept at a campsite near it, but these hikes were gorgeous. Definitely bring the hiking boots if your going further than the viewing platform (which you should).

6. Queen’s bath

Parking sucks here. I ended up in a parking lot a half mile away and we just walked in the beautiful sun to get there. We did the hike down in flip flops and it was manageable! Trail Head and Tiny Parking Lot

Best Food & Drink

1. Hamura Saimin

There were a few places here and there to eat, but not too many I’d go out of my way for. We stopped here for some classic Hawaian soup and it was totally worth it! Map

2. Ishihara Market

This was a supermarket that had great poke! I love poke so it was essential I stopped there and got my daily fill. Map

Camping!

Kauai was my gateway drug into camping. Before this trip, I hadn’t camped for years… We lugged one check in bag full of camping gear around just for this trip and it was 100% worth it. Hawaii has PERFECT temperatures, nothing that will kill you, and only a couple bugs. The following were the two spots we pitched our tents. 100% worth it.

1. Haena Beach Park

Since we were rushing to hike a bit of the Kalalau Trail before sunset, we got to the camping spot after dark. Most tents were set up on the grass behind the tree line, but we decided to pitch ours right on the sand. In hindsight, it made sense as we were exposed to the wind, and we woke up in the morning about 2 feet away from the rising tide. Alls well that ends well, right? Camping Spot

2. Koke’e State Park

We, AGAIN, arrived at the campsite well after dark after catching the sunset at Polihale. It seemed like we drove through Koke’e for a while up the mountain before finding the spot. We climbed in elevation so much that there was a significant change in temperature from the beach. After throwing on a hoodie, we set up right next to the parking lot which was right next to the washroom. It was absolutely gorgeous to camp underneath the full moon and the stars.  Camping Spot

Indonesia

As a TL;DR summary/recommendation:

Again in 2018, I had the chance to bounce a bit around Indonesia, specifically Bali, Gili Meno, and the Komodo Islands. I wrote the following as a recommendation guide for my friends who were considering taking their honeymoon there!

Bali

In Bali, we stayed 5 nights in Ubud and one night in Kuta just as a stop before our flights.

Ubud

The city was amazing! It’s a walkable town if you stay nearby and there are a variety of spas, food, waterfalls, day trips, and more. It’s pretty hip.

Hotel – Sthala – The hotel is a bit outside the Ubud downtown, but they were really cheap and an SPG property, so we stayed there as we chased platinum status. I was surprised of how NICE the hotel was for the price, and they have a regular shuttle to take you in to town. I enjoyed it and would stay again. I think there might be a 4seasons or something closer to Ubud you can look into because I know you’re ballin’

Activities

OKAY so for most things in Bali (and asia) you can organize all your activities with local tour agencies, your hotel, or with taxi drivers in the street who can just drive you to the destinations you want.

For one day, we negotiated with a driver to take us to …

Tegelalang Rice Patties – Pretty cool rice patty that you can walk through. You do have to pay a small fee to enter as well as fees at checkpoints along the hike. They also have random swings and stuff, but it was a pretty nice walk through.

Pura Tirta Empul – at this water temple women need to wear a wrap you can get on site and for a small fee you can rent a swim robe and bathe yourself in the holy waters of the temple.

For the next day, we organized a sunrise hike with a local agency on the street who provided transport, “breakfast”, and “lunch”

Mt Batur Sunrise Hike – Hit up my man Ketut. He dragged us up the mountain. You leave at like 3am and then hike a couple hours in the dark to make it to the top for sunrise. We did it in runners, though hiking shoes might have been nice. Either way, it was totally worth it! I can give you Ketut’s number so you can see if you can negotiate a good price or at least make sure he’s your guide.

Pura Penataran Agung Lempuyang – Sky Temple. It’s far as hell and we didn’t get a chance to go while we were there, but it makes for a damn good instagram picture

Nusa Penida

This can be done as a day trip where get a boat ticket and you hire a car to take you to all the main sites. We only did the day trip that took us to 3 locations on the island. I felt it was a bit quick, but I don’t know much about the accommodations on/around the island. I could have seen staying a night here just so I could have spent more time at …

Kelingking Beach – This is THE site on this island. There are these other beaches you hang out at, but this is THE spot to come and take a picture.

Kuta and other areas that aren’t Ubud

North Kuta – We stayed in a marriott hotel or something in Kuta and didnt really get a chance to explore fully. It was reminiscent of a typical asian city. Lots of bars and restaurants and also a beach to visit. The beach is not as nice as the others listed in my recommendations below.

South Kuta – This area has a bunch of beautiful beaches and a lot of high end resorts. It’s pretty touristy IMO, but I have to admit, it’s still nice/ balling. One of the ballin’ ass hotel’s we visited that you might consider is…

Ayana – If it’s your honeymoon, you might want to splurge on the luxury here. If you don’t get a room here, then you should at least visit the Rock Bar

Rock Bar – The bar in Ayana. Get there for sunset, it’s freaking beautiful. We showed up about an hour before sunset and they were packed and not accepting people until there was space. We waited in another bar and caught most of the sunset before being let in to catch the last 15 minutes. You can have a driver take you here and he’ll drop you off while you explore and grab a drink. There are a TON of people who come to Ayana to see the hotel and the bar. It’s ballin… worthy of a honeymoon. But it’s also very busy so you might not get the alone relaxation here… which you can get in Ubud!

Jimbaran Bay – Once you’re done with the rock bar, head to this area and have dinner on the beach. There are a ton of restaurants serving seafood on chairs set up around the bay and if you just walk and find a spot that is crowded, it’s pretty good bet

Gili Islands

There are 3 Gili’s to visit and each one is known for their own vibe. We only did 2 nights in Gili Meno, but could have totally chilled there for another night or two.

Gili Meno – Relaxation ( this is where we visited and we loved it) – There are no cars on the island. They transport stuff with horse drawn carriages.  You can literally walk around the whole island in an hour. It’s a place to really slow down and chill out. The water is freaking beautiful and you can snorkel right off the island without needing a boat to take you out. You COULD also get a boat to snorkel some other areas around the Gili’s but we literally just launched off the beach and it was great. They even have this sweet underground statue thing to snorkel at. I literally have a million pictures that cant even describe how beautiful it was.

Gili T – Party Island – we could hear and see all the nightlife on Gili T from the shore of Gili M which is where we stayed.

Gili Air – Mix of relax and party – We took the boat from Gili A to go back to Bali.

Hotel on Gili M – Kura Kura Beach Resort – This was a budget friendly hotel that was actually pretty nice. Room was clean and updated, and again surprisingly good for the money. There are only a few hotels around the island, and we walked past a couple of the honeymoon level resorts that looked balling.

How to get to Gilis

Fast boat from Padang Bai. It has like 2 or 3 stops. Pretty easy to do and research.

Komodo Islands

This isn’t where I parked my car

Komodo islands are beautiful and exciting. It has beautiful islands and is a DIVING paradise. Even if you don’t dive exploring the islands and snorkeling is great! There are two ways that you can explore the island – 1. Stay at a hotel then take 1 day boat trips to see the islands and snorkel 2. Do a live aboard boat and spend 1 or 2 nights out on the water while exploring the islands. Option 2 is more expensive but you get to maximize your time exploring. There are so many varieties of liveaboards so if you do this, make sure to do your research. We did option 1 where we stayed for 3 nights and did 2 day trip excursions plus a bonus private boat.

Hotel – We stayed at the Golo Hilltop Hotel. The place could have been nicer, but reasonable for the price. It’s at the top of a hill so it was a walk to get there and back, but they’ve got a great view though!

Labujan Bajo (LBJ) – this is the port town that  you’d stay in and that the boats launch out of. The town is not very developed and only has a couple restaurants to eat at. You don’t really spend your time here in the port as you just hop on boats to see the surrounding islands.

At LBJ you can walk around and find/negotiate prices for your day trips. We took 2 day trips that fortunately did not overlap locations but one was focused around Komodo Island, while the other was focused around Rinca Island.

Komodo Island – The tour that day probably had something like 4 stops. It involved snorkeling, nice beaches and of course… seeing a Komodo dragon. While it was cool to see the dragons, the experience overall was not so exciting. They were these giant lizards that COULD kill you if you pissed them off, but they just laid there and sometimes fought with each other. You have to pay IN CASH the entrance fee so if you do this, don’t forget. We had to spot some Canadians who forgot their cash.

Padar Island – Hiking up Padar island gave me one of the BEST pictures i’ve ever taken.

Candid. Nailed it.

Rinca Island – Along the Rinca Island tour we stopped at Pink beach which is a tiny island that comes and goes with the tide. its beautiful but as with most tours, you are on a schedule so we couldn’t spend as long as we wanted there.

Private Boat Rental – Since we had one extra day with nothing planned, we rented a private boat for ourselves. It was just one guy in his rinky dink boat but he took us to our own private beach. It was pretty cheap (negotiated of course) to rent the guy for the whole day and it was a pretty cool experience to have him just take us to the private beaches for us to just lay at, snorkel, drink, and chill. I think it ended up being something like $50 to rent the guy for the whole day.

Vietnam https://euseb.io/2020/03/16/vietnam/ Mon, 16 Mar 2020 04:15:09 +0000 https://euseb.io/?p=660

In 2018, I travelled 2 weeks in Vietnam and absolutely loved it. I have to admit though I’m not really into temples or pagodas so sorry if this is more food-based than you’d hoped!

HANOI

Beer Corner

We used Hanoi as our base for visiting Sapa and Halong Bay.  We flew into Vietnam pretty late on our first night and stayed in Hanoi.  We woke up early the next morning to head to Sapa (spent two nights there) and then returned to Hanoi for three nights.  We had about 1.5 days for Hanoi itself though looking back, I wish I had a little more time to not feel so rushed. Our

Where to visit: we went to the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum and the one-pillar pagoda – worth visiting once. The highlight of Hanoi is the beer corner (it is absolutely insane on this stretch, especially on a Friday or Saturday night).

Where to stay: we stayed at the Oriental Central Hotel and it was great – pho for breakfast, fantastic location, and excellent customer service.  The room was on the smaller side but this is standard for anything in the Old Quarter.

Where to eat: Hanoi was a foodie heaven ! The best Northern Vietnamese dishes are bun cha, banh cuon, and egg coffee

Bun cha Huong Lien (24 Le Van Huu) – this place was made famous by Obama and Bourdain, come here and order the bun cha

⁃ Banh cuon nong (71 Ho Hoan Kiem- open from about 5 pm) – really good banh cuon here

Banh Mi no. 14 (in front of a yogurt place – 14 Hang Buom Street) – this is easily the best Banh Mi we had the entire time we were in Vietnam

Cafe Giang (39 Nguyen Huu Huan) – this is the birthplace of egg coffee, but egg coffees are pretty good from other cafes. By the way… I now love egg coffees

Bun Bo Nam Bo (89 Hang Dieu) – gotta try the bun bo from here!

SAPA

Even in a thick fog that covered the breath taking view of the valley, it was still worth it

I really enjoyed our side trip to Sapa. It was a 5 or 6 hour bus trip up the mountains. This area is great for trekking, visiting local Vietnamese villages, and seeing the tiered rice paddies. I just loved the vibe of a sleepy mountain town and it scratched an adventurous itch.

We took Sapa Express (the soft seats, not the sleeper… definitely liked the soft seats over the sleeper… just something weird about a bus sleeper) which was super comfortable.

Where to visit: you can do Cat Cat village on your own.  Hire a guide to take you to Lao Chai and Ta Van.  The scenery is amazing.

Where to stay: we stayed at Freesia Hotel and it’s a bit out of the way.  The room wasn’t as clean as we’d have liked and the WiFi was shoddy, but otherwise great customer service and a good breakfast buffet.

Where to eat: Little Sapa (ate here 3 times…)

HALONG BAY

My ex was not a fan of sleeping on boats.  We looked into overnight cruises but just couldn’t bring ourselves to do it.  Everyone recommends doing an overnight cruise because it’s a 4 hour bus ride from Hanoi to Halong Bay one way, but we found a company that does  the drive in just 2 hours!  We went with Estella Cruises and it costs twice as much as any other Halong Bay cruise, but it was worth it just for the time savings alone.

Maybe it was the day, or maybe I have been spoiled by beautiful water areas, but Halong bay was not as exciting as it had been built up to be. The water was dirty and filled with trash from over tourism. If you want beautiful limestone cliffs in pristine waters, you should go to Coron and El Nido in the philippines. I’m sure you’re still going to go to Halong bay because you have to, but I was not all that impressed.

HOI AN

Such a picturesque city!  We stayed here for four nights.  We spent that amount of time in Hoi An mainly to get custom-made clothes, otherwise it can be done in 2-3 nights.  Highly recommend getting custom-made suits, dress shirts and dresses here.  I got 2 suits and 2 dress shirts for $400 USD.  AND THEY FIT LIKE A GLOVE.  If you’re interested, I highly recommend Kimmy’s (70 Tran Hung Dao) – say you’re from Canada and you know me.  We highly recommend Hannah (she knows exactly what she’s doing!).

Where to visit: An Bang beach and the Ancient Town (you can spend hours wandering around here)

Since Hoi An was much less crazy than Hanoi or HCMC, so I was emboldened to rent a scooter which was an awesome experience. I loved zipping around the vietnamese countryside and it was the best way to get to An Bang beach to chill for one of the days.

Where to stay: Pham Gia Homestay – very reasonably priced and the people are great – highly recommend!

Where to eat:

Pho Xua (35 Phan Chau Trinh) – really enjoyed the mi quang, pho and com ga (chicken rice) from here

⁃ Happy hours – Green Mango and The Hoianian

⁃ Phi Banh Mi (88 Thai Phien) – decent Banh Mi

White Rose Dumplings (533 Hai Ba Trung) – I’d say come here once just to try the white rose dumplings

⁃ CocoBox (all over the city) – really good Vietnamese coffee and cold pressed juices

Mi Quang/Cao Lau (272 Hung Vuong) – this spot is out of the city, but has amazing mi quang and cao lau (signature dishes of Hoi An)

Madame Khanh – The Banh Mi Queen (115 Tran Cao Van) – arguably just as good, if not better, then the Anthony Bourdain Banh Mi spot

Banh Mi Phuong (2B Phan Chau Trinh) – this is the Anthony Bourdain spot – he says it is a symphony in a sandwich!

HO CHI MINH CITY

This was my least favorite of the cities I visited in Vietnam. It didn’t have the character of Hanoi and just felt like a crowded 3rd world city. I will admit though, this is the place to get Pho which … we did… a lot.

You can google all the spots to eat in HCMC, but I will agree that Phở Hòa Pasteur was the SPOT… we went there for dinner, lunch, then dinner again before we headed to the airport.

Hello world. https://euseb.io/2020/03/16/hello-world/ Mon, 16 Mar 2020 03:27:57 +0000 https://euseb.io/?p=661 Like many creators out there, I often prevent myself from sharing because I feel like my end product is not good enough. I’ve tried my hardest to listen to the advice “Good and done is better than perfect” but clearly I have not been able to put that into practice… UNTIL NOW.

I’ve had this site for 3 years and have not posted a single thing. I’ve been lucky to have visited a few places in my life, and even more honored to be asked for itineraries and recommendations for those places. I put in a lot of effort to compile these lists for people, and I stand by every recommendation. I’ve had grand ideas of how I’d format and post these, but it’s time to take that advice and just start putting things out.

So here we go!

June, 2018

Poke, Infinity Pools, and an Introduction to Paradise

Duration: 3 days, 2 nights
Island: Maui, HA

Hawaii’s main island. We didn’t stay long enough to see the WHOLE island but we definitely saw everything we wanted to see. I even took a solo trip WAY out west to Disney’s hotel and Pearl Harbor while Nessa was at her cousin’s wedding.

Things To Do

1. Diamond Head Hike

Very popular hike for the main island. It’s nothing crazy in terms of trails. You can definitely hike these in runners and you’ll see plenty of people at the top.  Map

2. Hanauma Bay

Beautiful bay to chill at the beach and go snorkeling in. You have to pay to get in, but it’s nothing crazy. Bring a snorkel and spend a few hours here. Map

3. Waikiki Bay

The main beach of downtown Honolulu. Just get a hotel in the area and walk around. Pro-tip…

Sheraton Waikiki – they have an infinite pool on the beach. You might have to be a hotel guest to use it, but you can totally just walk in if you are confident enough. Map

4. East Coast Highway Drive

There are a bunch of stops along the drive. Always wear bathing suits because you can find yourself in the water in any of these places!

  • Spitting Cave
  • China Wall
  • Halona Blowhole
  • Makapu’u Tide Pools

5. Pearl Harbor

What guide would be complete without mentioning Pearl Harbor. I didn’t get a chance to take a tour, but just stopping for a bit and taking it all in was interesting to see.

Best Food & Drink

1. Fresh Catch Kaimuki

The best poke that I had the entire trip. There is a mix of variety with unmatched quality. I easily ate there 4 or 5 times.  Map

2. Ono Seafood Products

Apparently they are an institution. While unassuming, they were certainly delicious. It was the first poke place we ate at, and it set a high bar. Map

3. Ahi Assassin’s Fish Co.

We only had the chance to swing by before our trip to the airport, but I’m glad we were able to. They have some unique mixes that were truly killer.  Map

4. Marukame Udon Waikiki

We love noodles. This place had good noodles. This place was one block away from our hotel. There was a line in the evenings so we ate a few breakfasts there.  Map

5. Mud Hen Water

I went on a lovely date with Nessa’s sister’s boyfriend since we both had a night without them. It was hip and delicious. The area was kinda hip too. Overall our Man Date was a success. Map

Hawaii

September, 2017

Beach Camping, Lava Flows, and Poke

Duration: 12 days, 11 nights
Island: O’ahu, Kauai, Hawai’i, HA

Nessa and I headed to Hawaii on our way to our 6 month adventure in Australia. We did a mix of camping and hotel stays which I think allowed us to experience a side of Hawaii that many people don’t. Not only did it help save on costs, but it allowed us to camp on the beach, under the stars, and experience the power of lava! It also prepared us for our future adventure in New Zealand later that year.

O’ahu

Hawaii’s main island. We didn’t stay long enough to see the WHOLE island but we definitely saw everything we wanted to see. I even took a solo trip WAY out west to Disney’s hotel and Pearl Harbor while Nessa was at her cousin’s wedding. While it was the most commercialized, it had the best food of the three islands we visited.

Highlights

  • Copious amounts of poke
  • Seeing a sea turtle for the first time
  • Sheraton Infinite Pool on Waikiki Beach

Kauai

Kauai was my favorite island in terms of beaches and being outdoors. We camped several nights on this island on the beach and in KoKe’e state park. I can hardly describe how amazing it was so I’ll just include this video of the helicopter flying into Jurassic Park.

Highlights

  • Camping on a beach
  • Beautiful Hikes
  • Luxury Resort

Hawai’i

We came here to see a volcano and that is what we did! While there are still plenty of beautiful beaches to lounge on, the highlight of this island was the time we spent exploring Volcanoes National Park. I was almost a huge wimp, but Nessa pushed me out of my comfort zone and got me to hike through the razor sharp lava fields in the dark so that we could see lava up close.

Highlights

  • LAVA!
  • Camping while the sky was lit by LAVA!
  • More LAVA!
