SketchUp Community - Latest posts https://forums.sketchup.com Latest posts 3D Basecamp - Discounted registration We are in the middle of the planning phase - our additional events will be posted on the schedule on the Dimensions website. The sessions and overall schedule typically do not come out until summer.

Some details that I can share include….

Basecamp and Dimensions attendees can attend all conference sessions, Basecampers are not limited to only SketchUp sessions.

We typically share several social events with Dimensions - in the past we have had our own appreciation party, but you can also attend the Dimensions parties and socials.

SketchUp 2026.1.2 Released I wouldn’t mind a copy of your example. You could click on my avatar and send a private message to me.

Can you double check whether 2025 was using the new graphics engine? When doing 2026 and getting slow updating, does zooming or orbiting make it catch up immediately?

Rayscaper - Looking for Mac testers We do still test on Intel Macs, but I’m sure most of us have Apple Silicon work machines. IT make sure we’re up to date, so that means everyone is on Tahoe or Sequoia.

Only supporting 2024 and later is fine, because it’s likely your renderer will want to use Metal, and that wasn’t supported in 2023 and earlier.

SketchUp LayOut: small gaps not visible and edges too thick when dimensioning As @d13tz wrote, turn off Draft mode. That will prevent things going blank when you pan and zoom around the page.

It might be that you need to use a thinner line scale for the viewport (or at least the associated tags) or maybe you need to display the viewport larger on the page. If you have thick profile edges in the style you can edit the style to set them to 1 or turn them off. Or maybe you need to add a detail inset view of the model to show that tiny detail.

There might be something you can set up in the SketchUp model or maybe you already have the needed setup and just need to adjust the way you are using it.

Can you share the LO file so we can see exactly what you are working with? If you can’t make it public, send it via a PM by clicking on my name and then “Message”.

BTW, please update your forum profile to show the SketchUp version you are currently using.

SketchUp LayOut: small gaps not visible and edges too thick when dimensioning If you uncheck “Enable Draft Mode” in the preferences, you can then toggle Draft Mode on and off as needed. When it’s on, the lines are all shown as thin and it’s easier to dimension things.

SketchUp LayOut: small gaps not visible and edges too thick when dimensioning Hi,

I’m wondering if there are any recommended settings in SketchUp when drawing cabinetry that will later be dimensioned in LayOut.

I’m having trouble placing dimensions in LayOut because I can only clearly see the edges for a moment when zooming in. As soon as I try to add dimensions, the edges of the cabinetry appear very thick.

For example, I have a 3 mm gap between drawers that I need to show, but the edges of the drawers and the gap end up looking like one thick line.

Is this something that can only be fixed in LayOut by adjusting the Line Scale in the viewport, or is there a better way to set this up in SketchUp?

Thanks in advance!
Alex

File size limits There are many factors to consider, and some of them are counterintuitive.

You can have a very small file that’s highly space-efficient, yet computationally expensive because of its complexity. Equally, you can have a large file that’s simple in structure but heavy to process due to the sheer amount of detail.

In SketchUp, most real-world projects end up being a mixture of both at once. Finding the “Goldilocks” balance between flattened geometry, unique entities, and instanced components is, frankly, very difficult.

I’ve spent days optimising large, masterplan-scale site models—often an aggregate of work from multiple designers and architects. It’s a substantial task, and maintaining the discipline across teams to avoid hitting some of SketchUp’s fundamental limits is even harder.

Quite often, the simplest and most robust approach is to keep the model in manageable chunks and assemble or review the final plan outside of SketchUp.

]]>

Ruby code to make multiple slices of a model? Or another approach to this? Using the “Create Group From Slice” function in Section Plane to take “snapshots” of new rooms:

Create section - create group - copy - click out of section - paste - move section down 1 foot - repeat.

This generates a “stacked floorplan” that lets me annotate things all at once & send it to the architect to update:

This is what it looks like “unstacked”:

3 issues with this:

1.) It’s repetitive and seems like a perfect opportunity for a Ruby script or an extension. I don’t know the first thing about Ruby though.

2.) It’s all generic untagged groups; unless I also stop and tag them, or carefully place them in order, it becomes more difficult to order them properly. This is also something that can be scripted out I’m sure.

3.) Is there an existing extension that does this? I wouldn’t even know what to look for in terms of keywords; anything I found that has to do with sections is nowhere near this process.

Any advice would be appreciated! Or if someone wants to take on a mini-project, I’ll pay you for a custom extension.

Get the correct environment parameters for the scene(aka. page)
Fairytale:

same environment, but with different parameters

It looks strange for me, If an Environment object has different parameters, it is another object not the same.

I haven’t dealt with the environment yet, but the “usual” method for page was to temporarily make it current, query it, and restore original state of pages. (However, nowadays they also include scene changes in the undo stack, so take that into account.)

Draft code:

# parameter: Sketchup::Page object
def get_env_rotation( page )
  model = page.model
  pages = model.pages

  #store the current page and switch off page transisstion
  showTransition = model.options["PageOptions"]["ShowTransition"]
  model.options["PageOptions"]["ShowTransition"] = false
  sel_page_name = pages.selected_page.name

  # switch to the page in question
  pages.selected_page = page

    # quiery what you want, e.g.:
    env_rot = page.environment.rotation

  # switch back to original page and restore page transisstion
  pages.selected_page = pages[sel_page_name]
  model.options["PageOptions"]["ShowTransition"] = showTransition

  #return the queried prop
  env_rot
end

Hobby mihai.s Thanks! :slight_smile:

After giving Gemini AI the base image, a SketchUp scene, and a description of all the elements in the model, I started with a summer image. Then, I just asked it, one by one, to keep the base and composition (rocks, vegetation, hills) and to change the season and time of day.

But it is necessary to be as clear as possible and not to overlap the requests.
When I told it to position the four guards along the entire wall, it got a little confused and inserted a lot instead.
It also had a problem when I told it to render two images - foggy morning and winter, it collaged them into a single image.

But it manages to capture very well what I specified and even complete it with well-thought-out things (the entourage, for example).
And there’s no limit to the number of words I could write to it.

File size limits The face and edge counts in a model are what matters most. With new versions of SketchUp, the amount it can smoothly handle has increased over the years and today counts over a million faces or edges usually work quite OK, but when you double or quadruple that things slow down. Faces and edges all have to pass through your processor core so single core performance is crucial when selecting a CPU for SketchUp. And a forest made of 3D trees will kill any model. And using components can make a very high-poly model into quite a small file when saved on disk.

File size limits
jabrown:

Is there certain amount of data in the file to avoid that will cause performance to drop?

how long is a piece of rope, how thick is a book… how heavy is a sketchup file. you’re asking us an existential question here :slight_smile:

weight in kb / mb is not as relevant as it used to, we have better machines, stronger connexions, bigger hard drives.
besides, like the other said, lines and face count are the numbers that matter.

with the new engine and the pbr materials, files have a tendency to fatten up : a 1000x1000px material used to be roughly 1mb. but if it’s pbr, due to the extra maps in it, it can be up to 5mb. And pbr materials work well with hdri environment, that can add another 10-25-100mb to the mix.

I did a test when it was released, on a 17mb file. Adding pbr material to all the metallics and glass and a 4k environment form polyhaven, and breached the 50mb barrier.

it’s still the same file. it takes longer to open and to save I guess, but once it’s open, it’s the same.

I’m sure there are a lot of us at SketchUp who are looking forward to a Mac version!
