What does your job at VANBRUUN entail?

As the Head of Diamond Purchase, my primary responsibility is to buy all diamonds that pass through VANBRUUN and ensure they coordinate with our very high-quality standards.

What type of challenges do you face in your day-to-day work?

Diamonds are a small and very precious commodity, and therefore we have to be 100% confident in what we offer our clients. To me, this means supervising and controlling every step of the process and testing the diamonds for authenticity in multiple ways.

Have you found that synthetic diamonds have increased lately?

Definitely, and it keeps increasing. I believe lab grown diamonds are an excellent alternative to natural stones. They have the same properties and look identical to the natural option. The most noticeable difference is the value, the lower value of a lab grown diamond separates them from the natural stones. The lower value makes them more affordable for consumers, although it is good to consider that the second-hand value is much lower than a natural diamond.

In what way have you and your colleagues at VANBRUUN used GemPen?

We use it as part of a series of tests to control our melee stones. We also demonstrate that diamonds are natural or lab grown to clients. The GemPen is easy to use and presents understandable and quick information.

You have a number of other tools at hand. In which step of the process have you found GemPen to be useful?

GemPen is accurate and quick, making it the given tool for any selection of tests that we conduct. In addition, it is the only tool we use for all of our procedures.

How has the GemPen been received in general?

I rely on it every week, and my colleagues at our outbound operations department use it just as much as I do. VANBRUUN is delighted with the product and would recommend it.

London, United Kingdom (November 10, 2020) – Gem-A Instruments have today been announced as entering into an official Distributor Agreement with Gemometrics AB, innovators of the gemmological screening tool GemPen®. 

The new screening device utilizes full spectrum Xenon ultraviolet (UV) light technology with a unique combination of wavelengths and filters. Once turned on and directed towards a diamond, the Ultra Spectrum Optical Filtering (USOF) technology displays unique fluorescence effects, providing results on treatments and lab-created diamonds that are not visible using standard UV-light products.  

GemPen® was invented by Swedish gemmologist, geologist, and Gem-A Accredited Teaching Centre tutor Torbjörn Lindwall FGA DGA, to provide a portable solution to aid in transparency and valuing gems in the industry. The Gemstone Map, which is accessible online through the GemPen® Academy is an image bank of reference diamonds, sapphires and rubies tested by GemPen® that illustrate different fluorescence effects under the various filters.

Palma de Mallorca, Spain (September 23, 2020) – The World Gem Foundation announced today that they will provide their ‘Diamonds Course’ free for all new clients of Gemometrics AB, innovators of the gemmological screening tool GemPen®.

The World Gem Foundation has included GemPen® in its gemmological curriculum since 2019 after conducting extensive tests in collaboration with IGE (Instituto Gemológico Español) laboratory in Madrid.

The ‘Diamonds Course’ provides a comprehensive understanding of the chemical nature of diamonds, how they are formed, classified, mined and cut. It discusses their physical and optical properties, geology, localities, principle mines, causes of colour, absorption spectra, pleochroism, inclusions, fluorescence, gem identification, methods of synthesis and common treatments/enhancements. The course also gives an overview of the various cut grading systems used by GIA, AGS, HRD, IGI, EGL & AGA. The course is available online and upon successful completion students receive course credits towards both the ‘Career Gemmologist’ and ‘Diamond Professional’ Diploma Programs and a letter of completion.

TORONTO, ON (January 28, 2020) — The Canadian Gemmological Association (CGA) announced today its academic partnership with GemPen®.

“With the rise of lab-created diamonds and lab enhancements, GemPen® is providing the information that gemmologists need to make accurate appraisals and determinations of diamonds, the world’s most commonly used gemstones,” said Donna Hawrelko, President of the CGA.

The new screening device utilizes ultraviolet (UV) light technology with a unique combination of wavelengths and filters. Once turned on and directed towards a diamond, the Ultra Spectrum Optical Filtering (USOF) technology displays unique fluorescence effects, providing results on treatments and lab-created diamonds that are not visible using standard UV-light products. An additional complimentary tool is the Gemstone Map, an image bank of reference diamonds tested by GemPen® that illustrates different fluorescence effects.

“In our universe of constantly shifting standards and technology, it is important that Canadian gemmologists can rely on GemPen® as a source of determining natural diamonds from their lab-created counterparts. And this helps immensely with determining value and price per carat,” said Hawrelko.
