Hi Michelle. Be patient with yourself, the recovery is slow. I think I may have responded to you on the SCI subreddit also: https://www.reddit.com/r/spinalcordinjuries/comments/1jnmjac/comment/mkl6w9l/

Assuming you also have bladder/bowel/walking problems I’d also suggest finding a hospital that specializes in SCI rehab. I’ve been to Craig Hospital 4-5 times over the past 7 years and the advice and help they’ve provided has been life changing.

I had thoracic spinal laminectomy and fenestration of an arachnoid web 12 days ago! Was in hospital for a week due to loss of csf fluid and pain. I am home now but extremely limited – pressure headaches if I sit up for more than 20 minutes, shortness of breath, fatigue and overall weakness! Any post surgery tips would be greatly appreciated

I have had multiple surgeries in my life including ACDF, 3 c sections, hysterectomy, gall bladder removal, appendix removal, 3 sinus surgeries and nothing has come closs to this pain or isolation.

Unfortunately my SAW was missed by a Neurosurgeon even though it was displayed on my MRI and in the MRI report. I went for 18 months feeling as if I was standing in a crowded room screaming at the top of my lungs and no one heard me. I would never share with anyone other than my Doctors how severe my pain was or how depressed I was becoming.

I am 7 weeks post op, hurting like hell and having pre surgery symptoms beginning to return. I feel weak. I began PT 3 weeks after surgery. I am trying to work from home. I am focusing on my becoming a grandparent in January and praying I can make the trip and hold my granddaughter upon meeting her!

Faith is all I have combined with my drive to persevere.

I pray you continue to get well and again thank you so much for sharing!

Sorry to hear about your accident. My symptoms slowly got worse over decades and then kind of accelerated in 2016-2018 until I had surgery. I imagine the time varies. But your case sounds pretty complicated since some of your problems may be from the recent accident and it is tough to separate.

In January of 2023 I was in a horrific car accident with a broken neck, lumbar fractures, lots of leg damage. I was in hospital for 5 months, finally learned to walk again with a cane. All the focus was on cervical, lumbar and legs but finally a thoracic mri was done and it looks like the cysts ruptured to form a web, spinal cord displacement and herniation. I am gutted. I am in PA. Reading everything I can read. I don’t feel like I have symptoms, but it would be hard to know with everything else. How long did you have symptoms before your surgery? Are all recoveries as lengthy as yours? Could you do stairs after your surgery? Thanks for any reply. I’m so scared.

Hi Kim, did you ever get to see Dr. MCcormack at Columbia? Wondering what he was like. I don’t know if he will take my PA insurance, though.

I’ve been living with an arachnoid web for more than 20 years. I’ve always been told that it’s inoperable, or too much of a risk to remove.

Sorry for the delay replying, and ya, it is quite scary. It does also seem to be solvable and surgery can stop things from getting worse. There is a Mayo Clinic in Florida. I did mine in Minnesota, but the surgeon who performed the operation is now in GA: https://www.wellstar.org/physicians/marcus-gates-md

My understanding is that the cause is not really known. It is just an abnormality that can form and you can be born with it and it slowly gets worse.

Best of luck.
