The 2023 Open Source Program Office (OSPO) Survey is live! https://github.blog/news-insights/the-library/the-2023-open-source-program-office-ospo-survey-is-live/ Thu, 25 May 2023 17:00:28 +0000 https://github.blog/?p=72106 Help quantify the state of enterprise open source by taking the 2023 OSPO survey.

The post The 2023 Open Source Program Office (OSPO) Survey is live! appeared first on The GitHub Blog.

]]>
The past few years have seen an increase in the number of open source program offices (OSPOs) operating in enterprises, academia, and government—notably, the Octoverse 2022 report found that over 30% of Fortune 100 companies have implemented an OSPO. These programs aim to become a center of excellence for an organization’s open source activity, whether that’s publicly releasing its own code, participating in upstream communities, managing its dependencies on external projects, or a combination of all of these.

Along with working on our own open source initiatives (including releasing our OSPO’s policies and tools!) GitHub is partnering with the TODO Group and Linux Foundation to gather research data about OSPOs and similar open source initiatives. The project aims to provide research-backed insights into the adoption, implementation, and impact of OSPOs across different sectors and industries.

A key part of this project is a public survey that will help quantify how different organizations are addressing issues in open source, like balancing openness and control, managing external dependencies and upstream contributions, and sustaining internal and external communities. If you’re involved with your organization’s efforts around the use of open source software and are interested in providing your perspective, please complete the survey! It should take less than 15 minutes and the data will be incredibly valuable to advancing our understanding of open source at scale.

As a thank you, upon completion of the survey, you will receive a code for a 25% discount on any Linux Foundation e-learning training course or certification exam, as long as you register before August 30, 2023.

Here are a few other sessions we’re excited for:

Introduction to Vitess, sharding framework for MySQL by @mcrauwel

Friday, March 10, 2023—15:00 to 16:00

Vitess (vitess.io) is a framework built on top of MySQL for horizontally scaling MySQL. It was designed at Google for scaling YouTube through hyper-growth and has since then been release to Cloud Native Compute Foundation (CNCF) were it is considered a “graduated project.”

@leereilly says: I blinked and I failed to keep up with the latest database technology, so this will be great overview of the technology I overhear discussed almost daily in coffee shops and Slack channels.

We accidentally created a Serverless Application by @jjasghar

Saturday, March 11, 2023—15:00 to 16:00

As a developer advocate, one of the largest challenges we have is teach people how to use our products. To do this means that we have to create workshops and disposable environments so our students can get their hands dirty. As IBM employees we use the IBM cloud, but it is designed for long-term production usage, not the ephemeral infrastructures that a workshop would require. We have previously created some systems around it to provide different ways of building up these systems, but in this latest iteration, we discovered we created a full serverless stack (by accident).

@ladykerr says: Working in the cloud has become a keen interest of mine. I can’t wait to hear this talk and understand more about serverless development.

Cloudy with a Chance of Success: 7 Tips and Tricks for Surviving Your First Cloud Engineering Experience by Camilla Berretta

Sunday, March 12, 2023—11:30 am PT to 12:30 pm PT

In this talk, I will explore the challenges and opportunities of starting out as a cloud engineer, and provide practical tips and tricks for overcoming these challenges and having a successful experience. These are:

  1. First principles—get a handle on the fundamental concepts of Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment.
  2. Keep your cool —sort and understand the complex set of tools given to you.
  3. Define, accelerate, and strengthen your developer loop so you can focus on your code.
  4. Find your “Steve” —identify the person, inside or outside your team, who knows everything, loves to help, and is open-minded.
  5. Try and discover open source tools for testing locally without deployment.
  6. Understand the processes involved in deployments, and shadow them if you can.
  7. Document your blockers. Keeping a record of every blocker you encounter, and how you resolved it, is a fantastic way to internalize your learning and to become more self-sufficient.

@blackgirlbytes says: Not to be a copycat, but I’m also interested in the talk, Cloudy with a Chance of Success. First off, the title is intriguing and creative. Additionally, in my past roles, I’ve focused heavily on serverless development, so I’m looking forward to learning how it’s evolved over the years and gain tips on how to introduce cloud development to a beginner.

Check out the full schedule and list of speakers. Registration is still open! 🙂

See you there! 👋🏻

Hacktoberfest is back for its ninth year! Our friends at DigitalOcean host an annual celebration encouraging open source contributions during the month of October. We all use and depend on open source to power our digital world. In the past year alone, we saw over 2.6 billion contributions on GitHub! Hacktoberfest is a great way to give back to the open source projects we all depend on. ✨

➡ Register to get started!

More than code 🎉

While code contributions are top of mind when it comes to open source, projects often desperately need non-code contributions like writing, design, advocacy, and financial contributions.

This year, consider writing some docs, designing a logo, or scheduling a few tweets to support your favourite open source community. You don’t have to be a technical expert to make a difference!

How GitHub is participating ❤

Contribute to GitHub:

You can contribute to several GitHub projects participating this year, including GitHub Docs. If you’ve ever wanted to contribute to GitHub’s open source documentation, now is your chance!

Contribute to a more equitable world:

The GitHub Social Impact and DigitalOcean Social Impact teams are working together to amplify Hacktoberfest 2022 volunteer opportunities to digital public goods (DPGs). If you’re looking to contribute to projects that work towards a more equitable world, check out our list of participating DPGs.

Jump in!

There are already over 90k projects on GitHub participating in Hacktoberfest this year!

We’re excited to announce an opportunity for students to connect with employees at GitHub ahead of GitHub Universe 2022! This year, the conference will take place virtually and in-person November 9-10 and to kick the week off, we’re thrilled on behalf of GitHub Social Impact, to host virtual Micro-Mentoring sessions for the fourth year in a row.

As part of our ongoing commitment to drive positive and lasting contributions to the world with GitHub products, our brand, and our employees, we’re providing an opportunity for 30-minute, 1:1 Micro-Mentoring sessions for students with GitHub employees.

This is a time to engage with industry experts on career pathing. From resume feedback, to goal planning and skill development, this is a time to connect personally and professionally like-minded individuals. We will have two tracks, Day 1 Resume and Day 2 Technical Career Pathing.

Here’s what one past participant had to say about the experience:

I was fairly nervous when I met with the GitHub micro-mentor because I’m not used to having the opportunity of speaking with people in tech about my career goals and resume. Through this experience, I learned a lot about tech and myself. I feel a lot more confident about applying to Software Engineer Internships and consulting work after this experience.

How to take part:

  • Each slot will consist of a virtual 1:1 session with a GitHub employee for 30 minutes on Monday, November 7, 2022 for the resume session and Tuesday, November 8, 2022 for the technical career pathing session between 4:00 am-10:30 am PT. Please note there is limited availability.
  • Please use this link to apply.
  • A diverse team of GitHub employees will review each application. Applications must be received by 5:00 pm PT Wednesday, October 5th. Applications must be received by 5:00 pm PT Friday, October 7th. You must be 18 or older and currently enrolled in a college/university/academic institution. If you are selected to participate, we will contact you by email by Wednesday, October 12th, and you must confirm your attendance in writing by email by Monday, October 17th.

Ready to take the next step for your career, like this mentee did? Submit your application today!

I truly loved this experience! My mentor was nice, and helped me make some decisions in my future career as a software engineer. Thank you so much for this opportunity!

♿ How to Write an Accessible Pull Request

Friday, September 16, 2022 at 9:30 am PT

Web accessibility is the practice of making a product or feature usable for as many people as possible. This practice ensures that users with disabilities can perceive, navigate, understand, and interact with websites, tools, and technologies. Web accessibility fosters inclusion and diversity by removing barriers that make it impossible for some people to use the web.

Diversity is an important part of tech because it helps create a culture that welcomes new ideas and brings more perspectives together to solve problems. Unfortunately, many underrepresented groups, including people with disabilities, do not feel welcome in open source.

This workshop will demonstrate how we as developers can remove barriers and create a more inclusive open source community by adding additional information into the markdown in a pull request.

Facilitators: Kendall Gassner and Adrián Bolonio

Headshot of Kendall Gassner from shoulders up, smiling with a black and white striped top Kendall Gassner is an Accessibility Software Engineer at GitHub. She became passionate about accessibility while working to make an inclusive drag-and-drop feature early on in her career. Her passion led her to become a Certified Professional in Web Accessibility and Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies. Outside of work she loves spending time painting and hiking.

😰 Overcoming the Fear of Contributing to Open Source

Friday, September 16, 2022 at 11 am PT

If you’re feeling uncertain about contributing to an open source project for the first time, Rizel can relate. Navigating the open source space can feel intimidating. Mentors and managers always advised Rizel to contribute to open source, but it was difficult. She would feel anxious and overwhelmed by the large codebases and the confusing issues. In August 2021, she took a different approach. Instead of spiraling, she started small, read documentation, and interacted with the community. In this talk, Rizel will share light-hearted anecdotes about her failed and successful attempts to contribute to open source. The audience will gain inspiration and confidence to make their first contribution.

Facilitator: Rizel Scarlett

She moonlights as the Director of Programs at G{Code} House, an organization aimed at teaching women of color and non-binary people of color to code. Rizel believes in leveraging vulnerability, honesty, and kindness as a means to educate early-career developers.

See you this Friday!

The Grace Hopper Celebration kicks off with the virtual Open Source Day on September 16, 2022 from 8 am to 3 pm PT. Open Source Day is an all-day hackathon during which you can work with peers, as well as experienced mentors to contribute to awesome projects. We hope to see you there!

Git Merge, the conference dedicated to bringing the Git community together returns on September 14-15 in Chicago, Illinois.

We hope you can join us in-person for a full day of technical talks, plus a day of pre-conference workshops for Git users of all levels. Tickets and registration details will be available soon. As always, we will donate all proceeds from Git Merge tickets to the Software Freedom Conservancy to support their work in improving and defending free and open source software, including the Git project itself.

Call for speakers

In the meantime, we’re accepting proposals starting today through Sunday, July 10. Simply submit a proposal, and we’ll email you back by Friday, July 22. For more information on the kind of talks we’re seeking, please check out our Call for Speakers.

Sponsorship

Git Merge is about the Git community, not about any one company. Therefore, the conference would not be possible without the help of our sponsors and community partners. If you’re interested in sponsorship opportunities at Git Merge, please see the prospectus for more details.

See you in Chicago!
