Wipe out the backdrop using a savelayer with kSource and adjustable alpha. This reveals an alpha management problem for advanced blends that's been hiding just out of view.
The default color shouldn't be poking through unevenly here. Pipeline blends are behaving as expected with the backdrop alpha.
