👋 Hey, I'm Malek Hammoud

Software engineer | AI + Robotics Builder | Bronze Medalist @ Canada-Wide Science Fair

I’m a Grade 12 student and builder with a proven track record in software and hardware development. I am passionate about applying AI and robotics to solve real-world problems. Whether I'm building autonomous weed-killing robots, developing environmental SaaS platforms, or bypassing school firewalls, I build to learn how systems work and how to push their limits.

Breaking & Building Systems

I don't wait for permission to build what I need.

  • Bypassing Network Restrictions: When my high school blocked the platforms needed for competitive programming practice, I deployed a self-hosted DMOJ platform on Azure to bypass the school's network blocks.
  • Rolling My Own OS: I built and currently maintain Flow Arch, a custom Arch Linux-based operating system. Built using Arch ISO and the Calamares installer, it achieved over 300 downloads and won the SourceForge Rising Star Award for rapid community adoption.
  • Embedded Systems: For my startup, Basil Home AI, I configured a QNX Real-Time Operating System on a Raspberry Pi for embedded hardware control, integrating custom-trained YOLOv5 models for real-time grocery detection.

Hardware & Robotics

I write code that interacts with reality.

  • GreenGuardian: I designed, 3D-printed, and programmed an autonomous agricultural robot that uses computer vision and microcomputer processing to detect and target invasive weeds with herbicide. This project earned a Bronze Medal at the Canada Wide Science Fair.
  • Autonomous Litter Drones: I built a drone-based system leveraging GPS mapping and a YOLOv5 model trained on 772 images. It successfully mapped precise litter locations across a 5000m² area in under 10 minutes.
  • Monkey See Monkey Do: At Hack the North 2025, I built an AI-powered 6-DOF robotic arm that learns physical skills from text descriptions. I designed the custom robot and programmed its ESP32 microcontroller.

Cultivating Hackers

I actively work to create a space where every student can see themselves as a capable builder.

As the Hack Club President at my high school, I merged student clubs to form the Central Programming Alliance, growing the community to over 30 members. I teach coding fundamentals, prepare students for the Canadian Computing Competition, and host competitions to get more students hacking.

Hackathons

  • Hack the North 2025: Top 32 Finalist out of 250+ projects.
  • Hack the 6ix 2025: Winner, Deloitte's "Best Use of AI for Green".
  • TKS Global Hackathon 2024: Top 4 Winner out of 200+ projects.
