Add a type for simple pieces of information that aren't as formal as fact-check oriented Claims #2912

Description

@danbri

This is a proposal from Google. There is a gap in schema.org for a simple way to represent simple "facts" such as an interactive smart assistant might draw upon to answer questions (think "fun facts about" rather than politifact/fullfact etc "fact checks"). If adopted, this is likely to be used at Google for this kind of scenario.

Editorial comment (@danbri):

As is often the case with schema.org, the hard part is in naming. The word "fact" is too strong (similarly, we chose "ClaimReview" rather than "FactCheck" previously). Let's try "Statement" and see where that takes us.

Proposal:

  • new type parallel to Claim, i.e. a CreativeWork, called Statement. Represents a statement about something (potentially fun, silly, eduational, and not necessarily literally true. An "interesting fact".
  • Definition: "A statement about something. If known, the main entity this statement is about, can be indicated using mainEntity. For more formal claims (e.g. in Fact Checking), consider using [[Claim]] instead."
