Building GitLens, A VS Code App Used by 10 Million Devs

Eric Amodio, Creator of GitLens, sat down for an interview with GitKraken’s Developer Evangelist Dwayne McDaniel in the days leading up to GitKon.

In this session, Eric gives a high-level overview of why he built GitLens, an app that supercharges the Git capabilities built into Visual Studio Code, and he explains what problems he is solving for over 10 million developers who have installed the app.

Hear how Eric first encountered Git and how he first came to leverage Git commit messages for a better developer experience by exposing project histories directly in an IDE.

You won’t want to miss Eric sharing some of the lessons learned and insights he gained while working with the VSCode community and the extension developer he runs. This session is chock-full of advice for anyone wanting to go down that same path.

Building Git Velocity Metrics https://gitkon.com/sessions/building-git-velocity-metrics/ Wed, 15 Sep 2021 15:53:32 +0000 https://gitkon.com/?p=573

Session

Building Git Velocity Metrics

Git Velocity is a set of metrics and data around Git activity that can help you and your teammates work more effectively with Git and with each other. The purpose of collecting and using these metrics is to ship quality code more frequently with fewer bugs. These foundational elements are findings from the DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA) report by Google.

In this session, we’ll cover 4 key Git velocity metrics:

  • Throughput: How often code is successfully pushed to the production environment.
  • Lead Time for Change (Cycle Time): The amount of time it takes a commit to get into production.
  • Change Failure Rate: The percentage of deployments causing a failure in production.
  • Mean Time to Recover: How long it takes to recover from a failure in production.

At GitKraken, we are exploring ways we can provide these types of metrics to development teams, and also use them ourselves. We are in the early stages of designing and building a Git Velocity service. Join this session to be the first to see our initial designs, ideas, and functionality.

Keynote

Worse Is Better: Git And Its Ecosystem

In April 2005, Linus Torvalds gave us a thousand lines of C code sprinkled with TODOs and comments about design decisions. This code was meant to be the basis of an “information manager” to help him develop the Linux kernel. Fifteen years later, Git is the dominant version control system in use and has spawned an entire ecosystem of software around it. We’ll look back at how we got to where we are from these humble beginnings, and where Git and its ecosystem are going.

Driving Jira With Git https://gitkon.com/sessions/driving-jira-with-git/ Thu, 02 Sep 2021 19:09:29 +0000 https://gitkon.com/?p=507

Session

Driving Jira With Git

No matter the team or the project, developers need to keep everyone up to date about their progress. While Jira provides a rock-solid foundation for doing so, most developers agree, they do not want to live in Jira. And honestly, no one else on the team wants that either, they want developers focused on solving the hard problems and getting new features out the door.

In this session we’ll cover how to leverage Git, a tool you are already using, to get all of your updates into Jira without jumping over to Jira each time you commit. We will take a look at Smart Commits and Automation for Jira as paths to drive Jira and help developers focus on developing. We will also hear Adam discuss how Git Integration for Jira has helped teams better communicate and be more productive.

If you are a developer who is tired of hearing “update Jira,” then this talk is for you!
