Chantey Out Now!

25.03.2025
Ahoy there, mateys!

The wait is finally over, and I couldn’t be more excited to share that Chantey is finally released, and the physical cartridge (still feels bizarre to think about) is now available to order via the ModRetro website!

To celebrate the occasion, I put together this little video – Check out the game’s launch trailer on YouTube!

These past months have marked one of the most exhausting, challenging, and yet, most rewarding stretches of my life, and this week feels like all that energy, pain, blood, sweat and tears will finally pay off! If you’d care to help bring more eyeballs to this trailer and to this game, consider liking and/or leaving a comment on YouTube, and/or sharing this tweet (similarly, if you prefer using BlueSky, here’s the related post).

Putting in words how I feel right now is difficult. Chantey has been a huge part of my life for these past 2,5 years, and sending it off into the wild for all to see (and in physical form, no less) has been a nothing short of a dream come true! I truly hope all of you who end up playing the full game will appreciate the attention to detail, the painstaking quality assurance process, and the creativity and love that went into this dream project of mine. Whilst trying to stay humble, I truly believe Chantey to be something completely new, exciting and special for the Game Boy® platform – I can’t think of any other game blending in top-down adventure, note-matching rhythm combat and stealth elements in one completely crazy package – and I can only rejoice at the thought that something I made (from the game, story, music, graphics, down to the artwork on the box cover) will be part of your physical cartridge collection for years and years to come! And with the amazing treatment from ModRetro on all materials that come with the game (that charm came out so good!), I am sure you’ll receive a game package you’ll be happy to display next to all those other brilliant ModRetro titles.

I’d like to thank you all, for all the support, encouragement, and positivity, all of which fueled my resolve and helped me push through to deliver this game on time. I can’t wait for you all to finally get your hands on Chantey, and am eager to read/hear/see what you have to say.

From the bottom of my heart, I hope that you’re in for a grand adventure!

ModRetro to Publish Chantey for the ModRetro Chromatic

22.08.2024

Gortyn Code are thrilled to announce that our first game Chantey will get a physical release in cartridge format through ModRetro®, an emerging leader in heirloom-quality electronics, and manufacturer of the Chromatic, a cartridge-based gaming handheld paying tribute to the Nintendo® Game Boy®. The game is slated for release on the Chromatic in the first quarter of 2025, and can now be pre-ordered on the ModRetro website for $39.99 USD. The game cartridge will be fully backwards compatible with the entire Game Boy® line of video game consoles.

Chantey is an upcoming pirate metal-inspired top-down adventure, mixing open-world exploration and rhythm game elements. Set in an alternate history where Golden Age pirate mythology and headbanging metal riffs collide, you play as a young-man-turned-pirate, entangled in a fierce pirate vendetta between the descendants of the legendary ‘Nightingale Pirate’ on a quest to rule the seven seas beneath the vibrant echoes of rousing pirate metal anthems. Embark on an epic journey to re-assemble and revive the Nightingale Pirate’s heavy metal legacy, navigate treacherous waters, overcome notorious enemies, and survive the horrors lurking beneath the ocean’s waves!

The game’s first public playable demo, revealed at the Indie Arena Booth at gamescom 2024 together with the game’s announcement trailer, has been launched on Itch.io. We are eager for players to dive in (pun intended), and share their feedback! For all things media related, a press kit for the game, including screenshots, keyart and additional information, can be found here.

Reviving Nostalgia, Pixel by Pixel

25.06.2024

It’s been one year since a very early prototype of the game you’ve come to know as Chantey was first being worked on, bootstrapping Gortyn Code in sight. But it may come as a surprise to many that Gortyn Code’s history goes much, much further back than that.

As a personal brand, Gortyn Code has been around since 2015 (initially under the name ‘Greexcel Sprites’, a play on the words ‘Greece’ and ‘Pixel Sprites’), when I took my first steps into the process of single-handedly crafting and self-publishing (mostly free-to-play) video games and experimental interactive experiences from scratch. While the name was admittedly cheesy, it reflected my never-ending appreciation for the early Game Boy games that set me on the path to pursuing a career in game development, reflecting the aesthetics of retro gaming that were evident in the very first (and since long forgotten) game I ever released.

The eventual 2017 rebrand came naturally, through my parallel professional journey in research and technological development, and a deeply rooted drive to understand, apply, and transform knowledge into innovative technological applications (with particular focus on historically-themed video games, game-based learning, and immersive content development). More and more, I appreciated and respected video games not just as tools to entertain, but as vehicles for storytelling, learning, memory-making and preservation. With the name Gortyn Code, I not only chose to honor my own roots in Gortyna, Crete, but also opted to emphasize and remind myself of a renewed commitment to blend historical significance with modern creativity, motivated by sheer passion, capacity for innovation, the strive for excellence, and a profound respect for history, culture, and heritage.

With Chantey, a new chapter begins, one that seeks to leverage a decade’s-worth of modern game design knowledge and tools that are democratizing retro video game creation, enabling developers of all shapes and sizes to implement games that can potentially rival the classics in terms of quality, complexity and playability, and even overcome the limitations of legacy media formats. With renewed public interest and demand for all-new retro and retro-inspired video game titles, now is the time for Gortyn Code, as a studio, to plant a flag in this exciting new territory, strengthening its symbolic connection to the ancient Gortyn Code through a fresh and refined visual identity. Just as every pixel in a retro game is one of the earliest building blocks in game development, meticulously placed to create a cohesive and meaningful world for players to lose themselves into, so did the Code, as one of the earliest and most significant legal inscriptions in history, meticulously lay out the laws that governed society.

2025 marks Gortyn Code’s unofficial 10-year anniversary. It is no less fitting that it should also mark the official release of our first game as a studio. There’s more exciting news to come in due time, since our journey to redefine the boundaries of retro gaming has only just begun – and we look forward to sharing its discoveries with you!
