Official rules for the Hack the Map 4 hackathon.
Event Dates
January 10-13, 2020.
Team entry period
Event begins Friday morning at 9:00 AM PST (5:00 PM GMT) for all teams.
Team entry deadline is Friday, January 10 at 11:00 AM PST (7:00 PM GMT). By this time, all teams must declare their project and their team participants with a project post in Devpost. The project entry can be updated and modified at anytime during the hackathon until the final submission deadline.
All teams must create a single project entry on Devpost. Complete the form and add all team members to the project. This project can be edited and updated as often as you like until the final submission deadline.
Hacking period
Team hacking starts Friday, January 10 at 11:00 AM PST (7:00 PM GMT) and ends Monday, January 13 at 2:00 PM PST (22:00 GMT.)
Final project submission
All projects are due in Devpost by 2:00 PM PST (22:00 GMT) Monday, January 13, 2020. The project submission will not allow further updates after this deadline Project solutions must be available in a public Github repo.
Presentations
Presentations start Monday, January 13 at 2:00 PM PST (22:00 GMT.) Each team is given no more than 5 minutes to present and there will be a short question period after each presentation. Presentations conclude based on the number of teams presenting.
Teams based in Redlands are expected to present in-person. Remote teams can choose to submit a 5-minute video of their presentation or participate via remote video conference.
Judging period
Judging occurs during the presentation period, Monday, January 13 beginning at 2:00 PM PST (22:00 GMT), or when the first team presentation begins.
Winners announced Monday, January 13 at 4:00 PM PST (or shortly after the final presentation.)
Submission Rights & Display
If you are an Esri employee, Esri maintains full rights to the resulting project and maintains the right to continue further development of the idea.
If you are an Esri employee, Esri maintains ownership of all code, designs, and all components of each project submission worked on as part of this event.
Esri will have the right to include the project on its website, marketing material, or any way it sees fit.
Prizes & Winner Selection
One prize will be awarded to an overall winning project as determined by the judges. The overall winning team will also be awarded the Hack the Map trophy for 1 year.
There will be three first prize winners, one in each of the three categories, as determined by the judges.
There will be three second prize winners, one in each of the three categories, as determined by the judges.
Judging criteria
The judges will grade the projects on a scoring of 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest) in the following categories:
Applicability Applies to category: Enterprise, Civic, or Consumer. Applies to event theme: leverages The Science of Where.
Usefulness Real world applicability and usefulness (as it applies to its intended category).
ArcGIS Integration Application of ArcGIS technology and utilization of ArcGIS APIs and SDKs.
Design User experience and design, including the map’s effectiveness.
Submission Quality How well the project adheres to the submission guidelines and the overall presentable quality of the project, completeness of the solution, project components. Project quality based on clear architecture and code organization of the solution.
Presentation Quality of the final presentation. How well the product is represented and its purpose and usefulness conveyed through the presentation.
Scoring
The score is determined by adding all the scores across all the judging criteria categories for each contest judge.
The winner is the team with the highest total score.
The first prize winner is the team with the highest score in each of their respective selected categories (after removal of the overall winner.)
The second prize winner is the team with the next highest score in each of their respective selected categories (after removal of the overall winner and the first place winner in that category.)
In the case of a tie, the prize will be awarded to the team that presented first.
In the case not enough projects are completed in a given category then no prize will be awarded in that category.
Code of conduct
All participants are required to abide by Esri's code of conduct.

Esri employees are required to have their manager’s approval to participate. Esri employees are to charge time working on hackathon projects to the correct charge code:
