One of the first things I do when I’m onboarding a new client who already has a website is to ask, “How much are you paying per year for web hosting now?”

If the answer is “More than $200”, you are paying too much.

Keep it simple

Most small businesses are not rolling their own high-traffic e-commerce websites with a bunch of customizations, or a custom-built dynamic web application that’s processing a lot of customer data. Most simple business websites need a few pages, maybe an online shopping cart, and up-to-date information about the business.

These types of websites can live happily online for about $100 per year.

Pay annually, not monthly

Most web hosts offer big discounts if you pay for your hosting up-front for a year. If you can afford it, subscribe annually, save a bundle and avoid a monthly charge that makes you cringe.

Choose wisely

There are a number of popular web hosts that completely support the back-end software so that you can focus on making sure your site’s design and content are up-to-date without needing to worry about applying software updates every month.

For most businesses, a simple WordPress.com or Carrd.co site should work fine for you. Squarespace is also fine, but its prices start at $192 per year. Which is okay, but more than you really need to pay. Wix is overpriced and has features you don’t need. Same with HubSpot.

I can help

One of my favorite things to do is to help other businesses save money and right-size their tech investments. Monthly software subscriptions can add up, whether you are actively using the tools and their features or not. It’s easy to set it and forget it.

I can help you inventory your digital portfolio, find opportunities for savings, and help you implement them. The first place to start is your web hosting plan. Contact me to discuss!
