Hydros Power receives Eurostars R&D funding to advance distributed hydrogen infrastructure

Hydros Power has received R&D funding from the EUREKA Eurostars programme, one of Europe’s leading initiatives supporting international technological innovation projects. This project will enable the company to continue developing its modular hydrogen capsule technology and advance a new model of distributed hydrogen infrastructure designed to simplify hydrogen distribution across multiple sectors.

Hydros-Power-distributed-hydrogen-infrastructure-Eurostars-project

The initiative has a total budget of €1.05 million and is being carried out in collaboration with the Swiss company New Generation Tanks, which specializes in advanced high-pressure hydrogen storage technologies. Together, the two companies will work on validating a new generation of hydrogen capsules equipped with ultra-fast connection technology.

Rethinking distributed hydrogen infrastructure

Hydrogen has become one of the cornerstones of Europe’s energy transition. However, its large-scale deployment still faces a structural obstacle: infrastructure.

Traditional deployment models rely on high-pressure refuelling stations, dedicated distribution networks, and substantial upfront investment. These factors have limited its real-world implementation in sectors such as logistics, mobility, and certain industrial applications.

Hydros Power proposes an alternative approach based on distributed hydrogen, where hydrogen can be transported, exchanged, and used through plug-and-play capsules. This modular model makes it possible to deliver hydrogen wherever it is needed, reducing technical and economic barriers and accelerating its adoption in real-world applications.

With this project, Hydros Power moves one step closer to building a new standard for distributed hydrogen infrastructure in Europe.

A new generation of hydrogen capsules

The Eurostars project will focus on the development and validation of an ultra-fast connection system for hydrogen capsules, a key technology for drastically reducing the complexity and time required for hydrogen exchange.

At the same time, the collaboration with New Generation Tanks will make it possible to incorporate a new, lighter high-pressure storage technology designed to improve efficiency in sectors where hydrogen remains difficult to implement due to weight, cost, or infrastructure requirements, such as logistics and UAVs.

The joint objective is to strengthen the competitiveness of the modular hydrogen distribution model and move towards a new technological standard for distributed hydrogen systems.

00_STELION-Distribution-Decentralized Hydrogen

By transporting hydrogen through modular capsules, Hydros Power’s system enables distributed hydrogen infrastructure without relying on large centralized refueling stations

Preparing the technology for market deployment

With a timeline extending to 2027, the project will make it possible to technologically validate Hydros Power’s capsule-based hydrogen distribution model, while also advancing the industrial certification processes required for its commercial deployment.

Beyond the technical development, the initiative reinforces the company’s long-term vision: to transform the current hydrogen distribution model and make it accessible to a wide range of applications. These include urban logistics, refrigerated transport, industrial mobility, and UAV platforms, sectors where hydrogen can offer significant advantages over solutions based exclusively on batteries.

With this new Eurostars initiative, Hydros Power continues to strengthen its position as one of the emerging players in the development of hydrogen technologies in Europe, helping to create solutions that can accelerate decarbonisation in key sectors. At a time when Europe is stepping up its climate ambitions, technologies that simplify hydrogen deployment will be essential to unlocking its full potential.

Fuel cells vs. batteries: choosing the best solution for modern warehousing

In a world where logistics efficiency can mean the difference between staying competitive or falling behind, with more than $7.4 trillion in global online sales expected by 2026 and over 2.77 billion digital buyers, warehouses have become strategic hubs of present and future commerce. From order picking to last-mile delivery, every process matters. But there’s one silent factor that conditions the performance of this entire chain: the energy source powering these warehouses, especially when comparing fuel cells vs batteries

Choosing how to power a logistics fleet is no longer just a technical decision. It’s a high-impact operational one. It affects productivity, equipment availability, maintenance costs, space usage, and even the facility’s environmental footprint. And that leads us to the big question: Should warehouses continue relying on lithium-ion batteries, or has hydrogen’s time come?

In this article, we’ll break down the advantages and limitations of both technologies, explore their logistical and environmental implications, and explain why hydrogen is gaining traction as a scalable, clean, and efficient energy solution for today’s warehousing needs.

Lithium battery forklifts: benefits, limitations, and hidden costs

For years, lithium-ion battery-powered forklifts have been the preferred choice for logistics operations seeking a cleaner alternative to diesel. And with good reason: batteries offer local zero emissions, lower mechanical maintenance, and quieter operation.

However, behind these advantages lie several limitations that have a direct impact on productivity and total cost of ownership. One of the most critical is recharge time, which can extend for several hours, rendering the vehicle inactive. This requires spare batteries, dedicated charging areas, and tight operational planning to avoid downtime.

In addition, battery performance tends to degrade over the course of a shift, especially under high demand or extreme temperatures, which affects operator efficiency. On top of this, the battery’s lifespan deteriorates with each charging cycle, reducing its capacity over time and requiring replacement every few years, a cost often underestimated at the planning stage.

Another often-overlooked issue is the space required for charging zones, which not only consumes valuable warehouse floor space but also creates safety risks and entails additional infrastructure and ventilation costs. While lithium batteries remain a useful solution in many scenarios, their operational and structural limitations become increasingly evident in contexts that demand resource optimization, extended shifts, and environmental accountability.

Fuel cells vs batteries: STELION Station and STELION Powertrain for logistic-Hydrogen-Warehouse

Hydrogen forklifts: advantages for logistics

Hydrogen-powered forklifts are emerging as a real and competitive alternative to batteries, particularly in logistics environments that require continuous availability, agility, and energy efficiency.

One of their main advantages is refueling time: while a battery takes hours to recharge, a hydrogen forklift can be refueled in just 2 to 3 minutes. This eliminates the downtime associated with battery swaps or charging and gets the vehicle back in operation almost immediately. In multi-shift operations, this difference translates directly into increased productivity.

Another key benefit is consistent power throughout the shift. Unlike batteries that lose performance as they discharge, hydrogen fuel cells deliver steady energy output until the tank is empty, ensuring a more efficient and consistent user experience.

From an environmental perspective, hydrogen forklifts produce zero local emissions and have a minimal carbon footprint when green hydrogen is used. They also reduce reliance on lithium and eliminate the need for other critical materials with significant environmental impacts, such as nickel and cobalt.

In terms of infrastructure, modular systems like Hydros Power’s interchangeable hydrogen capsules enable scalable solutions without the need for complex refueling stations. This makes adoption easier and lowers initial implementation costs.

Hydrogen vs. Lithium: key comparison table

To make the comparison between both technologies easier to understand, we present a clear breakdown between lithium battery-powered forklifts and those powered by hydrogen fuel cells. This table highlights the key differences across technical, operational, economic, and environmental aspects.

Hydrogen vs. Lithium: Key Comparison Table

This comparison shows that, while batteries may be suitable for smaller or less demanding operations, hydrogen fuel cells offer a significant advantage in high-rotation environments, 24/7 operations, and settings where space and efficiency are critical factors.

The choice between lithium batteries and hydrogen fuel cells is no longer just technical. It’s strategic. It directly impacts the efficiency, sustainability, and competitiveness of any modern warehouse.

In this first article, we’ve explored the technical characteristics, advantages, and limitations of both technologies in the context of fuel cells vs batteries. The comparison makes it clear that, while batteries remain valid in certain scenarios, hydrogen stands out as a robust, scalable solution capable of meeting the demands of today’s logistics.

Want to know if hydrogen is a good fit for your warehouse?

We’ll help you analyze your operations and design the solution that best fits your needs. We believe that the shift toward cleaner logistics starts with concrete decisions, and we’re here to help you take that first step.

The project, backed with €59,500 in European funding, aims to decarbonize refrigerated logistics operations at the Port of Valencia with a clean, quiet and scalable hydrogen solution.

Hydros Power has been selected by the SME Market Expansion program of EIT Urban Mobility, an initiative of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), to lead a pioneering project in the Port of Valencia: the development of one of Europe’s first Hydrogen-powered reefer containers. With a seven-month development plan and €59,500 in EU funding, the project will demonstrate how green hydrogen can reshape cold chain logistics as we know it.

“Our goal is to offer a cleaner and more efficient logistics model aligned with the European Union’s vision for decarbonization,” says Iván Navalón, CEO of Hydros Power.

STELION Powertrain for refrigerated container

A pilot project at the Port of Valencia with key industry partners

The project will be carried out at the Port of Valencia in collaboration with one of Spain’s leading cold chain logistics operators, the Fundación Valenciaport (Opentop Hub), and the Valencia Port Authority, which will provide real-world testing conditions and supply the green hydrogen required for operation.

Over the next seven months, Hydros Power will adapt its STELION Powertrain module to integrate it into the structure of a standard refrigerated container, commonly known as a reefer, creating a modular system powered by green hydrogen. The solution is designed to operate across logistics environments, making it easier for the sector to transition away from fossil fuels.

The system has been conceived to allow seamless integration into different cargo platforms, paving the way for scalable deployment across various sectors. The project directly addresses one of the main challenges in refrigerated transport: the high and constant energy demand required to keep cargo cool 24/7. Diesel-based generators, the current standard, generate significant noise and emissions, restricting access to urban areas and complicating rest periods for drivers during stops.

Hydros Power’s alternative is fully electric, clean, and quiet, offering a sustainable solution that ensures autonomy, flexibility, and reduced environmental impact in demanding logistics operations.

Clean, quiet and efficient: a step forward for hydrogen logistics

Hydros Power expects its system to eliminate 100% of emissions associated with fossil fuels, improve overall energy efficiency by 15%, and reduce noise levels by up to 80%, significantly improving operational conditions across different logistics environments.

“This solution has been designed with the end user in mind, from drivers to operators, offering the autonomy and silence that diesel systems simply can’t provide,” says Iván Navalón, CEO of Hydros Power.

This initiative builds on a strong track record. In 2024, Hydros Power received a €190,000 investment from EIT Urban Mobility, validating its technology and boosting its first funding round. The company’s proprietary technology revolves around a modular ecosystem of fuel cell modules, plug-and-play hydrogen capsules, and modular refueling stations, designed for mobility and logistics applications.

With this new pilot, Hydros Power strengthens its position as a European startup at the forefront of the energy transition, demonstrating how hydrogen innovation made in Spain can drive decarbonization across critical sectors.

Hydros Power completes successful testing of its prototype for renewable hydrogen generation

Hydros Power successfully carried out the first proof of concept of its prototype for on-board renewable hydrogen generation in an aquatic drone (USV) to obtain a great autonomy on 11 and 12 February. The tests took place over two days in the Port of Alicante and in the city of Almansa and are the result of the startup’s participation in the PORTS 4.0 ideas programme, promoted by the State Ports Compensation Fund. During the development of the programme, the team has collaborated with different agents of the Science Park of the University of Alicante, Miguel Hernández University and the Port Authority of Alicante.

The test served to corroborate the theoretical design of the system initially proposed, being capable of storing the surplus energy from the solar production of photovoltaic panels in green hydrogen. In this way, an alternative storage method to lithium batteries is achieved, which allows greater autonomy to be obtained, with zero associated emissions and zero environmental risk.
