Carlos Oscar S. Sorzano

Carlos �scar S. Sorzano's research interests include image and data analysis in Structural, Molecular, and Cell Biology. He is an expert in Image Processing for Cryo-Electron Microscopy and the Statistical Design of Experiments with Research Animals, particularly in strategies to reduce the number of animals used through improved statistical design. He is a permanent staff member of CSIC, where he was appointed Cient�fico Titular in 2017 and Investigador Cient�fico in 2022. He is the co-principal investigator of the Biocomputing Unit and director of the Instruct Image Processing Center, both at the Natl. Center of Biotechnology, CSIC. Since 2011, he has coordinated the service of image processing and statistical analysis at the CNB. He is recognized among the most influential computer scientists in Spain, and he appears in rankings such as the top 2% of Spanish scientists in all domains and Stanford's top 2% of researchers in the world. He was accredited as a Full Professor in Information and Communications Theory in 2013. He also served as president of the National Association of Ram�n y Cajal researchers in 2011 and 2012. In 2008, he became a senior member of the IEEE. Two years earlier, in 2006, he received the �ngel Herrera research prize. Between 2004 and 2009, he held various academic and administrative roles at Universidad CEU-San Pablo (Madrid), including coordinator of the Section on Signal and Communications Theory, secretary of the Department of Engineering of Electronic and Telecommunication Systems, director of the Summerschool on Advanced Data Analysis and Modelling, head of the Bioengineering Laboratory, and co-director of the Master in Computational Biotechnology. He pursued a postdoctoral position at the Biomedical Imaging Group of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) between 2003 and 2004. Before, he had conducted his Ph.D. at the Biocomputing Unit of the National Center of Biotechnology (CSIC) between 1997 and 2002. His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Universidad Polit�cnica de Madrid, a Ph.D. in Pharmacy from Universidad San Pablo-CEU, a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Mathematics with a specialization in Statistics from UNED, a B.Sc. in Computer Science from Universidad de M�laga, and a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering with specializations in Electronics and Networking from Universidad de M�laga.

Los intereses de investigaci�n de Carlos �scar S. Sorzano incluyen el an�lisis de im�genes y datos en Biolog�a Estructural, Molecular y Celular. Es experto en Procesamiento de Im�genes para Criomicroscop�a Electr�nica y en el Dise�o Estad�stico de Experimentos con Animales de Laboratorio, particularmente en estrategias para reducir el n�mero de animales utilizados mediante un mejor dise�o estad�stico. Es miembro del personal permanente del CSIC, donde fue nombrado Cient�fico Titular en 2017 e Investigador Cient�fico en 2022. Es coinvestigador principal de la Biocomputing Unit y director del Instruct Image Processing Center, ambos en el Centro Nacional de Biotecnolog�a (CNB-CSIC). Desde 2011, coordina el servicio de procesamiento de im�genes y an�lisis estad�stico del CNB. Es reconocido entre los cient�ficos m�s influyentes en inform�tica de Espa�a y aparece en rankings como el top 2% de cient�ficos espa�oles en todas las �reas y en el top 2% de investigadores m�s citados del mundo seg�n Stanford. En 2013, obtuvo la acreditaci�n por parte de la ANECA como Catedr�tico en Teor�a de la Informaci�n y las Comunicaciones. Tambi�n fue presidente de la Asociaci�n Nacional de Investigadores Ram�n y Cajal en 2011 y 2012. En 2008, se convirti� en miembro senior del IEEE. Dos a�os antes, en 2006, recibi� el premio de investigaci�n �ngel Herrera. Entre 2004 y 2009, ocup� diversos cargos acad�micos y administrativos en la Universidad CEU-San Pablo (Madrid), incluyendo coordinador de la Secci�n de Teor�a de la Se�al y Comunicaciones, secretario del Departamento de Ingenier�a de Sistemas Electr�nicos y de Telecomunicaci�n, director de la Escuela de Verano sobre An�lisis Avanzado de Datos y Modelizaci�n, jefe del Laboratorio de Bioingenier�a y codirector del M�ster en Biotecnolog�a Computacional. Entre 2003 y 2004, realiz� una estancia posdoctoral en el Grupo de Im�genes Biom�dicas de la Escuela Polit�cnica Federal de Lausana (EPFL). Previamente, entre 1997 y 2002, llev� a cabo su doctorado en la Biocomputing Unit del Centro Nacional de Biotecnolog�a (CSIC). Su formaci�n acad�mica incluye un doctorado en Ingenier�a Biom�dica por la Universidad Polit�cnica de Madrid, un doctorado en Farmacia por la Universidad San Pablo-CEU, una licenciatura en Matem�ticas con especializaci�n en Estad�stica por la UNED, una ingenier�a t�cnica en Inform�tica por la Universidad de M�laga, y una Ingenier�a superior de Telecomunicaci�n con especializaci�n en Electr�nica y Redes por la Univ. de M�laga.
