Photographing a total solar eclipse is a special experience. On April 8, 2024, my friend Kevin and I set out to capture the eclipse from Perryville Regional Airport in Missouri. This was my second time seeing a total solar eclipse, and it was even better than I expected.

Previously I had been in North Carolina and only saw a sliver of the sky from the woods. For this experience since it was at an airfield in a flat area I could see 360 degrees of sunset when the total eclipse started. The sky turned dark, the temperature dropped, and for a few brief moments, time seemed to stop.

In this post, I’ll share our journey, give important photography tips/gear, and capture the magic of this incredible event.

For this eclipse I was equip with eclipse glasses from B&H Photo. If you are planning to see an eclipse make sure to get ISO 12312-2 Compliant glasses from a trusted merchant. During this eclipse I noticed many sellers later recalled their product, staring at the sun can of course damage your vision.

Eclipse glasses are essential to viewing the eclipse, before and after totality. During totality you can remove them and enjoy the view with your naked eyes.

It is quite amazing to see the moon obscure the sun, even when the eclipse is just starting.

After about an hour from the start of the eclipse we got to experience totality. This is when planning because essential since there you view the eclipse will affect how much time you have and if you are even able to see totality.

Eclipse totality of the 2024 eclipse in the United States

It is such an incredible feeling, you can just feel the energy in the air around you. During totality you can take off your eclipse glasses and view the moon covering the sun with your naked eye. I loved the 360 degree sunset surrounding us as I could hear insects and see street lights turning on. It’s quite the challenge to juggle cameras and experiencing it for yourself in the brief 4 minutes of totality.

Gear for Eclipse Photography

  • Camera (preferably high resolution to capture as much detail as possible.)
  • Lens (preferably around 200-300mm), extreme telephoto lenses are great for capture close up details of the sun but your frame will be plenty full at 300mm.
  • Tripod (not required but makes the process a lot easier, especially when heavily zoomed in.)
  • Solar Filter for your Lens, sustained sun to your camera sensor can damage your sensor. This is where a solar filter is essential. Keep in mind you’ll take this off during totality.

Photos of the 2024 Eclipse

Here’s a collection of my photos from the 2024 eclipse. I shot most of these with my Canon EOS R5 and the Canon RF 100-500mm lens. The clarity and detail are breathtaking. The high resolution of the EOS R5 captured the subtleties of the eclipse perfectly. This setup allowed me to zoom in close and get those remarkable shots of the sun’s corona and the moon’s shadow.

You can even see on the close up photos of the sun Baily’s beads coming off the sides.

My only mistake while photographing the eclipse was zooming out half way though. Since I was juggling so much with this experience I didn’t notice I lost focus (since I had manually focused the shot). Next time I photograph an eclipse I plan on keeping my focal point the same so I don’t have to worry about this aspect.

Conclusion

Photographing the eclipse was an unforgettable experience that Kevin and I will cherish forever. From the eerie darkness that blanketed the sky to the rush of excitement as the eclipse unfolded, every moment was extraordinary.

If you ever get the chance to witness a total eclipse, do it! With the right preparation and a bit of patience, you can capture stunning photos and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Remember, the key to great eclipse photography is preparation. Check your gear ahead of time, plan your location carefully, and familiarize yourself with the eclipse timeline. Most importantly, enjoy the experience—sometimes the best memories are the ones we capture with minds, not just cameras.

I hope my journey inspires you to embark on your own eclipse adventure. Whether you’re an experienced photographer or a curious onlooker, there’s something truly magical about witnessing this celestial phenomenon.

What is EXIF Data? The Complete Guide https://ihitthebutton.com/what-is-exif-data/ https://ihitthebutton.com/what-is-exif-data/#respond Mon, 19 Feb 2024 15:07:10 +0000 https://ihitthebutton.com/?p=138206 As photographers, our journey is not just about capturing moments but understanding the gear behind each photo. As photographers, our journey is not just about capturing moments but understanding the gear behind each photo. In this post we’ll dive into the EXIF data, a feature ingrained in digital photography that often goes unnoticed yet holds a wealth of information. This comprehensive guide will explore what EXIF data is, its significance, and how you can use it to enhance your photographic expertise.

Let’s dive in.

What is EXIF Data?

EXIF, short for Exchangeable Image File Format, is an essential part of digital photography. It’s a standard that embeds metadata into your photos, providing a detailed account of various aspects of each image. This usually includes settings of the photo like shutter speed and white balance. Typically most digital cameras embed EXIF data into all photos taken on a camera.

EXIF data typically includes:

  • Camera Specifications: Model, make, and the software used.
  • Shooting Details: Camera settings such as shutter speed, aperture, ISO, white balance, and focal length.
  • Geographical Information: GPS data including coordinates, if available.
  • Time and Date: The exact moment when the photo was captured.
  • Copyright Information: If set it’ll also write the photographers name into the metadata.

Diving deeper, EXIF data provides insights into the technicalities of each shot. This includes comprehensive details like metering mode, flash usage, image compression type, and pixel dimensions. It’s like having a behind-the-scenes look at your photography settings, giving you a chance to analyze and learn from each exposure.

EXIF Data Across Various File Formats

EXIF data isn’t limited to a single image format. It spans across various file types:

  • JPEG and JPG: Popular formats that embed a wide range of EXIF data.
  • RAW: The unprocessed ‘negatives’ of digital photography, RAW files contain extensive EXIF data, crucial for post-processing.
  • TIFF: A format often used in professional settings, supporting a comprehensive array of EXIF information.

When using a photo editing app like Adobe Lightroom you can filter all of your photos based on their EXIF data. For example you can filter all photos you’ve taken with a specific lens.

How to View and Utilize EXIF Data

Viewing EXIF data using MacOS

Accessing EXIF data is straightforward and can be done through:

  • Operating Systems: Both Windows and macOS offer native ways to view EXIF data. In Windows, right-clicking on a photo and selecting ‘Properties’ reveals this information. On macOS, using ‘Show Inspector’ in Preview does the trick. I’ve noticed on macOS at least it won’t show every single EXIF item but just a few key elements.
  • Photo Editing Software: Tools like Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop not only display but also let you edit this data.
  • Dedicated EXIF Viewers: For an in-depth analysis, dedicated EXIF viewing software or online tools like Online EXIF Viewer provide a comprehensive look at the metadata.

Keep in mind that if you find a photograph online many web servers remove EXIF data to improve the size of images. This includes many large websites and social media sites. So if no EXIF data is available on an image you find it doesn’t mean an image never had EXIF data. For example when sharing images from iPhone Apple has an option to remove the location data of the image from the image’s EXIF data.

Why EXIF Data Matters in Photography

EXIF data is can be more than just numbers and technical jargon. It has practical applications in photography:

  • Improving Photography Skills: By examining the EXIF data, you can understand what camera settings were used and how they affected the outcome of your photos. This is especially useful in mastering challenging conditions and experimenting with different settings. Read my tips to improve your photography skills.
  • Organizing and Cataloging: EXIF data enables you to sort and manage your photo library efficiently, using criteria like date, time, camera model, or even geographical location. This makes tools like Lightroom great for finding specific photos quickly.
  • Informed Post-Processing: When editing photos, EXIF data provides crucial information about the original conditions, allowing for more informed adjustments in software like Photoshop and Lightroom.

The Privacy Aspect of EXIF Data

While EXIF data is helpful, it also raises privacy concerns, particularly with geotagging features. Many Canon, Nikon, and Sony cameras don’t embed this information since they don’t have GPS capabilities. Sharing photos online with embedded location data can inadvertently reveal your whereabouts. It’s crucial to understand how to manage this aspect of EXIF data:

  • Removing Sensitive Data: Tools like imagy allow you to selectively remove EXIF data, such as GPS coordinates, to protect your privacy.
  • Disabling Geotagging: Many cameras and smartphones offer the option to disable geotagging to prevent the recording of location EXIF metadata.

If you are more technical using a tool like ExifTool will allow you to view and modify EXIF data with command line.

Leveraging EXIF Data for Creative and Professional Growth

EXIF data can be a powerful tool for both creative growth and professional development in photography:

  • Analytical Learning: Compare EXIF data across different shots to understand how changes in settings like ISO speed or shutter speed affect your images. You may also ask for a friend’s EXIF data from a photo to have a great understanding of the settings behind a picture.
  • Professional Use: For professional photographers, EXIF data can serve as evidence of authenticity and originality, especially important in contexts like photojournalism or contests.

Conclusion

EXIF data is a treasure trove of information that can significantly impact a photographer’s workflow, from shooting to post-processing. By harnessing the power of this metadata, photographers can gain deeper insights into their work, enhance their skills, and maintain control over their digital privacy. As digital photography continues to evolve, the role of EXIF data in enriching the photographic experience becomes ever more pivotal.

As you can see, EXIF data is important to unlocking the full potential of your digital photos. If you want to view your photos’ EXIF data, I built the site Online EXIF Viewer as an interactive and user-friendly tool to view and share EXIF data from your photos.

Dedicated in 1931, the memorial is unique as it was built to honor local citizens who served in World War I, rather than a national figure or the broader American forces. The circular, open-air Doric structure symbolizes the unity and community spirit of the District’s residents during the war.

Photography Tips for the DC War Memorial

The War Memorial, with its elegant columns and dome, offers a range of photographic opportunities, especially at dawn or dusk when the lighting is soft. Wide-angle lenses are great for capturing the entire structure, while a telephoto lens can help focus on detailed inscriptions.

Do you want to make sure your Canon camera is running on the latest firmware version? Firmware updates can enhance your camera’s performance, fix bugs and add new features.

Here’s my step-by-step guide on how to update the firmware on your Canon camera.

Firmware update screen on Canon R100

Getting Started

The process to download a firmware file I will admit is a bit cumbersome. I am hoping they improve this in the future but here’s the step by step guide to downloading a firmware file from Canon.

Download the Firmware

Start by visiting the main Canon site and searching for your camera using the search bar.

Searching the Canon website

Then once you’re on a camera’s page you can click the support button which will take you to the download section for the camera.

Once you are on the specific camera’s support page you can head do downloads and select your OS/OS version. The .FIR files for Canon cameras are universal so I find it really odd you have to do this. But if you select the latest MacOS for example the firmware won’t show up for whatever reason. So if you don’t see the firmware update try selecting a lower version of your OS. (For example I am on MacOS 14 but selecting MacOS 13).

You can scroll the file list to fine your camera’s firmware update as seen below. Remember to save the file in a location that is easily accessible. The package usually contains a .FIR file, which is the firmware update, along with detailed installation instructions in English.

Charge Your Camera Battery

Before you begin the firmware update, ensure that your camera battery is fully charged. This precaution avoids the risk of disrupting the update process.

Format a Memory Card

If you are going to update the firmware using a memory card (which I recommend), it’s essential to format the memory card for use in the camera. Remember to back up any images you want to keep from the card before formatting it. You can format your card on your camera or on your computer (here’s my guide to formatting SD cards on Mac.) Always format the card in the camera that will undergo the firmware update.

Ways to Update

There are two methods to update the firmware of your Canon camera:

  1. Updating via Memory Card (Recommended): After formatting the memory card, transfer the firmware update file (.FIR) to the root directory of the card. After doing this insert the card into the camera and navigate to the firmware update option in the camera’s menu. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update process.
  2. Updating via EOS Utility Software: Install the EOS Utility software on your computer and connect the camera using a USB cable. Open the EOS Utility and select the camera model to initiate the firmware update process. Follow the on-screen instructions provided by the software to complete the update.

Conclusion

Keeping your Canon camera’s firmware up to date is crucial for improving its functionality and performance. By following these simple steps, you can ensure that your camera is running on the latest firmware version, unlocking new features and enhancements. Stay tuned for future firmware updates to enhance your photography experience.

Looking for an SD card for the Canon R100? In this article, I’ll highlight the best SD cards for the Canon EOS R100. Boasting some great specs like 4K video recording, it’s crucial to choose a high-quality UHS-I SD card to fully harness your camera’s potential.

Shop for a Canon EOS R100 on B&H Photo

If you’re new to the R100, it’s a tiny, user-friendly mirrorless camera, perfect for beginners. The R100 continues Canon’s legacy with the RF lens mount, supporting both RF and RF-S lenses. An EF to RF adapter can also be used for expanded lens compatibility.

The Canon R100 is a compact and lightweight camera in the EOS R series, notable for its 24.1 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC 8 image processor. It offers great video capabilities with 4K recording at 24 fps (with a crop) and Full HD at 60 fps. The camera features an advanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF system with 143 autofocus zones, ensuring precise focus, particularly for human faces and eyes. Designed for versatility, it includes a 2.36 million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder and a 3-inch 1.04 million-dot LCD screen for easy viewing and composition.

Additionally, the Canon R100 supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity and comes with an SD card slot, making file transfers seamless. Its creative modes, including Creative Assist and Silent Mode, cater to a variety of shooting environments and preferences, making the Canon R100 a formidable tool for both photography and videography.

Now let’s jump into my SD card recommendations for the Canon R100.

Canon EOS R100 Memory Card Recommendations

The Canon R100 sports a single SD card slot supporting SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards with UHS-I compatibility.

  • Memory Card Slots: 1 (Eye-Fi and Multimedia cards are not supported)
  • Memory Card Type: SD/SDHC/SDXC Card
  • Memory Card Speed: UHS-I

Given the UHS-I speed support of the R100, you don’t need an ultra-expensive card to use all of the camera’s features. However, if you already own a faster card, it’ll work fine in the camera.

Just got your hands on a Canon EOS R100? You’ve come to the right spot. This post will cover the best settings for the Canon EOS R100. This small camera designed for beginners still offers plenty of features photographers will love.

Here are the first three things I recommend doing when you first get any camera:

Ensure you record the serial number: It is wise to make a note of your camera’s serial number as you never know when you might need it. Whether you save it in a notes app or register it on Canon’s website, be sure to write down the serial number.

Charge the R100 battery: Although it may be tempting to immediately start using your new camera, I recommend fully charging the battery to ensure a smooth beginning.

Update the firmware: It is important to keep the R100 camera up to date, and you can find the latest firmware on Canon’s website. Read more about updating the firmware on my full Canon firmware update guide.

Of course you’ll also want to insert your SD card (Recommended Canon R100 SD Cards) and set the camera’s date and time after starting it for the first time.

The Canon R100 is an excellent mirrorless camera for beginners. Here are the photography settings I suggest for the R100. Keep in mind you’ll need to turn the R100 off of auto to see the full menu system so you’ll likely want to put it on P for Program. You’ll also need to turn Display Level to standard for the full Canon menu.

Here are the best settings for the Canon EOS R100:

Shooting Menu 1: Image Quality: To get the best quality from the R100, it’s best to turn on RAW format and turn off JPEG. RAW lets your camera capture the highest quality and is made for editing. If you’re just taking casual pictures, you might like JPEG. But if you’re serious about photography, you’ll want to turn on RAW.

Shooting Menu 2: ISO speed settings: Max for Auto.

Shooting Menu 1: Auto Lighting Optimizer: The Auto Lighting Optimizer won’t change RAW photos, but it will change how RAW images look before you take the picture, which might affect how you shoot. If you’re using JPEG, keep this setting as it is.

Shooting Menu 3: High ISO speed NR: I set this to low because you can always add more noise reduction in Lightroom while editing your photos.

Shooting Menu 5: MF peaking settings: Peaking: You’ll benefit using focus peaking when you are using manual focus. When enabled, anything you are manually focusing on will display a red pixel.

Shooting Menu 5: AF-assist beam firing: The camera will shine an orange light to aid focusing in low-light situations. While this feature has its uses, I find that the camera’s autofocus in low light to be more than adequate, so I usually turn it off.

Shooting Menu 5: Focus/control ring: Great to know where this option, this allows you to set the control ring on lenses to focus or control. Many RF lenses have a dedicated focus ring but this setting is useful for the kit lens if you want the ring to do one specific action.

Shoot Menu 6: Drive mode: This will heavily depend on what you’re shooting but it’s good to know where this is located. Here you can set the camera to only take one photo or multiple when holding down the shutter button. You can also set self timers here.

Shooting Menu 6: Review duration: Here you can change the duration of the review image after taking a photo. This of course if your preference, I am okay with the default setting here.

Shooting Menu 7: Shooting info. disp.: Screen info. settings: I prefer to deactivate some of these to decrease the screens you need to scroll through when changing views. I prefer to use 2, 3, and 4, with 3 showing the level and histogram and 4 giving a clear view. However, this is completely your choice.

Shooting Menu 7: Shooting info. disp.: Grid display: Apply a grid overlay to your image here. The 3×3 grid helps you align shots according to the rule of thirds.

Shooting Menu 7: Shooting info. disp.: Histogram disp: Convert this to RGB and set the size to small. This will enable you to view the histogram of all color channels while shooting, while maintaining a much smaller display.

Shooting Menu 7: Disp. performance: The display performance is initially set to power-saving, which works well for most people. If you’ll be capturing lots of fast-moving subjects or action scenes, you’ll want to change it to smooth. This setting determines the screen’s refresh rate.

Playback Menu 5: Playback information display: I like to only use options 1 through 3 when looking at images because there are too many menus to go through otherwise. This will depend on what you like, of course.

Wireless Menu 1: Airplane mode: To save battery, activate airplane mode when the camera’s Wi-Fi is not in use. Deactivate airplane mode to transfer photos to your phone using Wi-Fi.

Setup Menu 1: Format card: It’s helpful to know where to find this option. When you format your SD card, you’ll delete all the content on it. This is handy when you’ve backed up all your photos and want to begin anew.

Setup Menu 1: Auto Rotate: Selecting “On computer” will prevent the image from rotating during review. The default setting may cause annoyance as the screen rotates with the camera during review. Using the “On computer” option will ensure that images are correctly oriented (landscape/portrait) when viewed off the camera.

Setup Menu 2: Beep: Each time the camera focuses, it emits a beep that may become bothersome over time. You can disable this feature here.

Setup Menu 4: Copyright information: You can enter your name and copyright details here to have them added to the metadata of all the images.

Setup Menu 4: Firmware: Just great to be aware this is where you update your firmware.

Display Level Settings Menu, Tab 1: Menu Display: Standard, while the guided option my be good for beginners anyone familiar with he menus will want this set to standard.

Display Level Settings Menu, Tab 1: Mode guide: Disable, every time you change modes by default the mode guide will pop up a large screen introducing the mode. While great for beginners experienced users will get frustrated by this.

Display Level Settings Menu, Tab 1: Feature guide: Disable, the feature guide offers a few info panels when moving through the camera’s shooting settings but experienced users will want to disable this.

My Menu: Add My Menu 1: Register your most used options, I like to put format card here.

And that’s it!

Those are my favorite settings to change on the Canon R100.

If you’re planning to visit the Korean War Veterans Memorial, you’ll find it conveniently located just southeast of the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall in Washington DC. One of the unique aspects of this memorial is that it is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, allowing visitors to pay their respects at any time. Whether you choose to visit during the day or in the evening, you’ll be greeted by a serene and contemplative ambiance. The memorial is easily accessible and well worth a visit when exploring the nation’s capital.

How to get to the Korean War Memorial

Many of the metro stations are approximately one mile away from the Korean War Veterans Memorial, so you will have to walk a bit to reach the memorial. The most convenient metro stations for the Korean War Veterans Memorial are Foggy Bottom (0.9 miles away) and the Smithsonian (1.2 miles away).

Hourly parking is usually available on Ohio Drive SW, which is just a couple of blocks away. If you arrive at sunrise, when there is typically ample parking, you can park on Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway, where there are parking spots on both sides of the road near the memorial. Visiting the Korean War Memorial is completely free and open all day, allowing you to freely explore the grounds.

If you need to use a bathroom while at the memorial you can head over to the Lincoln Memorial. There are public restrooms located underneath the Lincoln Memorial, but they often have a line.

History and Culture

The Korean War Veterans Memorial is a place where history and culture intertwine, offering a glimpse into the past and honoring those who served in Korea. As you wander through the memorial, you’ll encounter several key features that symbolize the sacrifices made during the war. The most iconic of these features is the Wall of Remembrance, which depicts haunting images of soldiers in juniper bushes, representing the harsh conditions and difficult terrain they faced during the conflict.

Another notable feature is the Pool of Remembrance, a reflective basin that serves as a reminder of the immense loss and the tears shed during the war. Surrounding the pool are granite markers etched with powerful quotations that capture the spirit and resilience of the soldiers who fought in Korea.

The recently renovated Pool of Remembrance sits along side the memorial’s large black granite wall reading “Freedom is not free”.

“The Forgotten War”

Often referred to as “The Forgotten War,” the Korean War is a significant chapter in American history that deserves recognition. It was a conflict that spanned from 1950 to 1953, involving the United States and its allies in a battle against communist forces. The war resulted in the division of Korea into North and South, with the demilitarized zone becoming a lasting symbol of the tensions that remain to this day.

The United States played a crucial role in the Korean War, sending troops and providing support to South Korea. Approximately 36,500 American soldiers lost their lives, and over 103,000 were wounded during the conflict. The sacrifices made by these brave men and women should never be forgotten, and the Korean War Veterans Memorial serves as a poignant reminder of their service and dedication.

Here are pictures through the years from visiting the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington DC. If you are planning which camera gear to bring to the memorial, I would recommend a zoom lens, like a 24-70mm, so you can capture the statues of the soldiers, as they serve as a centerpiece to the memorial.

Conclusion

Visiting the Korean War Veterans Memorial is a humbling experience that allows us to pay tribute to those who fought and gave their lives during the Korean War. As we stand in the presence of this memorial, we are reminded of the selflessness and courage displayed by the men and women who defended freedom in a faraway land.

It’s also a place photographers can enjoy capturing the soldier statues in the center of the memorial. Plus it’s proximity to the Lincoln Memorial makes it an easy stop when you’re visiting the National Mall.

The Rule of Thirds is a fundamental concept in photography composition that can enhance the visual impact of your images. It involves dividing your image into nine equal parts using two horizontal and two vertical lines. The idea is to place your main subjects along these lines or at their intersections to create a balanced and visually pleasing composition. This is typically one of the first photography tips photographers learn for better compositions.

In this post I’ll go over all of the basics of the Rule of Thirds in photography.

What is the Rule of Thirds?

Rule of Thirds example using an overlay

Let’s dive into how the Rule of Thirds works. The Rule of Thirds is a fundamental concept in photography composition that divides an image into nine equal parts using two horizontal lines and two vertical lines. This creates a grid of nine squares, with four intersecting points known as power points. This is considered the Rule of Thirds grid. By aligning the important elements of your photo with these power points or along the grid lines, you can create a visually balanced and captivating image.

The Rule of Thirds has been around since 1797 and has become a cornerstone of photography composition. It helps photographers create a sense of balance and interest in their images. By placing key elements along the grid lines or intersections, you guide the viewer’s eye and create a more dynamic composition.

For example, if you are a landscape photographer and have a landscape photo with a beautiful sky, you might place the horizon line along the lower third to give more emphasis to the sky. Or, if you’re taking a portrait of someone, you can position the subject’s eyes along the upper third line to create a natural focal point.

How to Apply the Rule of Thirds

Example of the Rule of Thirds

Placing your subject

When framing your shot, consider placing your subject slightly off-center, aligned with one of the grid lines. For example, if you’re capturing a majestic landscape, position the horizon along either the top or bottom grid line instead of directly in the middle. This technique adds depth and visual interest to your photo, drawing the viewer’s attention to the subject while allowing them to appreciate the surrounding environment.

Cycling through grid options in Adobe Lightroom
Rule of Thirds grid in Adobe Lightroom

Most cameras will allow you to turn on a grid in the viewfinder for the Rule of Thirds to help you frame your compositions. Additionally while editing your photos in Adobe Lightroom or Adobe Photoshop you can apply a grid while using the crop tool.

Balancing elements

The Rule of Thirds also helps to achieve balance within your composition by distributing the visual weight of the elements. If you have a dominant subject on one side of the frame, try to balance it with a smaller element on the opposite side. This can be achieved by placing a secondary subject or point of interest along one of the grid lines or power points. By doing so, you create a harmonious composition that keeps the viewer engaged.

Leading lines and movement

Incorporating leading lines into your composition is another way to make use of the Rule of Thirds. Leading lines are elements that guide the viewer’s eyes toward the main subject or point of interest. By aligning these lines with the grid lines or power points, you can create a sense of movement and draw attention to specific areas of the photo. This technique adds depth and dynamism to your images, making them more visually compelling.

Negative space

The Rule of Thirds can also be applied to the use of negative space. Negative space refers to the empty areas within a photograph. By positioning a significant portion of your image in the empty grid sections of your composition, you can create a sense of balance and emphasize the main subject. This technique is particularly effective for highlighting small subjects or isolating them from distracting backgrounds.

When (and How) to Break the Rule of Thirds

While the Rule of Thirds can be a valuable guideline, there are times when breaking it can lead to more creative and unique compositions. Read on to learn how to break the Rule of Thirds:

Dead Center

Sunrise at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool
Sunrise at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool

Placing your subject or horizon line in the center of the frame can create a powerful and balanced composition. This works particularly well for subjects that have a strong visual impact or symmetry. By centering your subject, you draw attention directly to it, creating a sense of immediacy and focus.

Extreme Off-Center

Another way to break the Rule of Thirds is by placing your subjects at the extreme edges of the frame. This technique can create a sense of tension and drama, as it defies the viewer’s expectations. It can also add a dynamic element to your composition, making it more visually engaging.

Diagonal Placement

Instead of aligning your subjects along the grid lines, you can experiment with diagonal placement. By placing your main subjects diagonally across the frame, you create a sense of movement and energy. This technique can add an element of visual interest to your composition, making it more captivating.

Conclusion

No matter if you’re a landscape photographer or portrait photographer the Rule of Thirds is a valuable tool in photography composition, but it’s important to remember that rules are meant to be broken. By experimenting with different composition techniques and going off-grid, you can create unique and compelling images that stand out. So don’t be afraid to break the rules and unleash your creativity in pursuit of stunning photographs.

While the iPhone 15 Pro brings a fresh wave of features and refinements, the camera remains its cornerstone, much like in the iPhone 14 Pro. The camera systems in both models are robust, but the iPhone 15 Pro introduces some nuanced yet appreciable improvements.

Here’s a dive into the camera comparison of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro.

iPhone 14 Pro vs 15 Pro Camera Specifications

Both the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro come equipped with a multi-lens setup, but it’s the additional options and new features in the iPhone 15 Pro that set them apart:

  • Optical Zoom and Focal Length Picker: The iPhone 14 Pro offers optical zoom levels of 0.5x, 1x, 2x, and 3x, along with a focal length picker ranging from 13mm to 77mm. The iPhone 15 Pro, however, extends the optical zoom to 5x/120mm (Pro Max only) and retains the previous zoom levels. The focal length picker in iPhone 15 Pro now includes a button to switch between 24mm, 28mm, and 35mm, making it more flexible and user-friendly.
  • Sensor and Lens Coating: Both models have a telephoto camera with sensor-shift optical image stabilization. The new anti-reflective coating on the lenses of the iPhone 15 Pro significantly reduces glare, which is particularly helpful if the iPhone 14 Pro’s lens glare was a concern.
  • Smart HDR and Night Mode: The transition from Smart HDR 4 in iPhone 14 Pro to Smart HDR 5 in iPhone 15 Pro results in brighter and richer photos, especially noticeable in HDR aspects. The iPhone 15 Pro also brings improved Night mode and Night mode portraits, enhancing low-light photography.
  • Automatic Portrait Mode: A standout feature in the iPhone 15 Pro is the automatic portrait mode which, while in normal camera mode, detects when you’re photographing a person or a pet and allows adding the portrait mode effect afterward, a feature I found handy.
  • Video Recording: Video enthusiasts will appreciate the iPhone 15 Pro’s ability to record ProRes video at up to 4K at 60 fps with external recording, a step up from the 4K at 30 fps on the iPhone 14 Pro. The iPhone 15 Pro can also film in LOG, a format video editors are very familiar with.
  • Minimap while Zooming: While fully zoomed in while using the camera, the iPhone 15 Pro provides a small ‘minimap’ to show where you are zoomed in on a photo, a thoughtful addition for better navigation.
  • USB-C Port: Not directly related to the camera, but the shift to a USB-C port from the proprietary Lightning port in iPhone 15 Pro supports faster USB 3 transfer speeds, which is great for quickly transferring high-resolution photos and videos to other devices.

iPhone 14 Pro vs 15 Pro Photo Comparisons

Here is a quick breakdown of example photos from the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro.

In well-lit settings, the photos captured by both the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro appear quite similar at a glance. However, when viewing the original HDR photos on an HDR monitor, there’s a subtle yet noticeable improvement in the HDR processing on the iPhone 15 Pro, showcasing better dynamic range and color accuracy (not pictured).

The wide-angle lens on the iPhone 15 Pro also reaps the benefits of the enhanced HDR processing, presenting clearer and vibrant images. Despite these improvements, the overall performance of the wide-angle lens remains largely comparable to that of the iPhone 14 Pro.

Here’s another example on the main camera; I do love the addition of a 24, 28, and 35mm button in the camera app on the iPhone 15 Pro. It allows for swift adjustments to the focal length, offering more creative freedom while framing your shots.

Lens selection on the iPhone 15 Pro (you tap the 1x lens to toggle 24/28/35mm)

Glare was a recurring issue in many of my iPhone 14 Pro photos, leading me to believe there might have been a flaw with the lens coating on my particular unit. Fortunately, the iPhone 15 Pro seems to have rectified this issue, as I haven’t experienced any glare in the photos taken with the new model.

The maximum zoom capability hasn’t seen a significant enhancement, with the exception of the iPhone 15 Pro Max which boasts a 5x optical lens. Nonetheless, the iPhone 15 Pro introduces a handy minimap feature when zoomed in, allowing you to easily “see” and navigate the zoomed area, thus enriching the zooming experience.

The glare issue on my iPhone 14 Pro is well-illustrated in this photo, which starkly contrasts with the crisp and clear image produced by the iPhone 15 Pro, devoid of any glare.

The selfie camera on the iPhone 15 Pro has seen a marked improvement in low light conditions, as evidenced by these night mode selfie photos. The images are brighter and exhibit better color rendition, making night-time selfies much more enjoyable.

Frequently Asked Questions: iPhone 15 Pro vs iPhone 14 Pro Camera

Is the camera on the iPhone 15 Pro better than the iPhone 14 Pro?

As seen in this post the iPhone 15 Pro camera offers slightly better balanced exposures from its ultrawide camera when examined closely, but there is very little difference when viewing images in isolation. Additionally there are improvements to SmartHDR and other image processing.

What is the difference between the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro?

The iPhone 15 Pro features an upgraded main camera with a larger sensor compared to the iPhone 14 Pro. The iPhone 15 Pro defaults to 24MP photos while the iPhone 14 Pro shoots 12MP photos by default. Both phones have a 48 megapixel sensor, but the iPhone 15 Pro allows users to change the camera’s focal length, with options of 24mm, 28mm, or 35mm.

The Verdict

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro both sport powerful cameras, but the newer model brings subtle enhancements that could matter to photography enthusiasts and professionals. Emphasis in photography is all about capturing the viewer’s attention and directing it toward a specific subject or focal point. Through various techniques, photographers can create images that tell a story, evoke emotions, or simply highlight the beauty of their chosen subject.

In this blog post, we’ll explore the concept of emphasis in photography and its importance in creating visually stunning images. We’ll discuss various techniques that can help photographers achieve the desired emphasis in their work, ensuring that their images stand out and leave a lasting impression on the viewer.

So, let’s dive in and discover the power of emphasis in photography.

Understanding Emphasis in Photography

As a photographer, emphasis is one of the most essential concepts to grasp. Emphasis in photography refers to the way that a photographer draws attention to specific elements within a photograph. By doing so, the photographer creates a focal point and highlights the most crucial aspects of the image. This is done through many ways including composition, framing, color, depth of field, and contrast.

Think of emphasis as drawing the viewer’s eye to a specific point in your photograph.

Importance of Emphasis in Photography

As a photographer, you want to create images that capture the attention of your viewers and evoke emotions. One way to achieve this is by using emphasis in your compositions. Emphasis is the technique of directing the viewer’s attention to a specific element in the photograph. If you are familiar with art and design a lot of the same rules apply.

In this section, we will discuss the importance of emphasis in photography and how it can enhance your visual storytelling.

Creating Focal Points

Creating a focal point is a common technique used to emphasize a subject in a photograph. A focal point is the primary element in the image that draws the viewer’s attention. It can be a person, object, or even a specific area in the photograph. By creating a clear focal point, you can guide the viewer’s eye to the subject and create a more engaging image.

To create a focal point, you can use various techniques such as using a shallow depth of field to blur the background or using leading lines that direct the viewer’s eye towards the subject. You can also use contrast, color, or lighting to make the focal point stand out from the rest of the image.

Directing Viewer’s Eye

Emphasis can also be used to direct the viewer’s eye through the photograph. By strategically placing elements in the image, you can create a visual path that guides the viewer from one element to another. This technique is often used to tell a story or create a sense of movement in the image.

To direct the viewer’s eye, you can use various techniques such as leading lines, repetition, or contrast. You can also use the rule of thirds to create a more balanced composition and guide the viewer’s eye towards the subject.

Enhancing Visual Storytelling

Emphasis is an essential tool in visual storytelling. It allows you to communicate your message and evoke emotions through your images. By emphasizing specific elements in the photograph, you can create a more powerful and engaging story.

For example, if you are photographing a person, you can emphasize their facial expression or body language to convey their emotions. You can also use emphasis to highlight important details in the image that help tell the story.

Techniques for Creating Emphasis in Photography

As a photographer, you want to create images that are visually compelling and communicate a message to your audience. One of the ways to achieve this is by using emphasis. Emphasis is the technique of drawing attention to a specific element or subject in your photograph.

Here are 7 ways to create emphasis in photography:

1. Contrast

Silhouette photograph

One of the most effective ways to create emphasis in photography is by using contrast. Contrast refers to the difference between the light and dark areas in your photograph. By placing a light subject against a dark background or vice versa, you can create a strong contrast that draws the viewer’s eye to the subject using visual weight.

Lighting and shadows can also be used to create emphasis in photography. By using directional light, you can create shadows that draw attention to the subject. For example, having your subject stand in front of a window can create a dramatic effect. Using a silhouette in a high contrast situation is a great way to make your subject pop in a frame.

2. Colors

Andy Feliciotti at Picture Lake in Washington, USA
Use of color to create emphasis (notice how the red jacket draws your eye)

Colors can also be used to create emphasis in photos. Bright, bold colors are more likely to catch the viewer’s attention than muted colors. You can use the color of your subject to contrast with the background or use complementary colors to create a harmonious image.

It can be more than just a pop of color. Learning color theory and the color wheel you explore different ways to use color in your images. For example orange and teal our complimentary colors and are often featured together in photographs. Color schemes are a great way to create an emphasized area in your photograph.

3. Depth of Field

Depth of field refers to the area of the image that is in focus. By using a shallow depth of field, you can create a blurred background that draws attention to the subject in the foreground. This technique works well for portraits and still life photography. You’ll likely need a lens with a low f-stop like f/1.8 to create a large separation between the background and your subject.

On the other hand, a deep depth of field can be used to create emphasis on the entire scene. This works well for landscape photography, where you want to show the entire environment in sharp focus.

4. Framing and Composition

Sunrise from inside the Lincoln Memorial

Framing and composition are important elements in creating emphasis in photography. By using framing, you can draw attention to the subject by placing it within a frame. This can be achieved by using natural elements such as trees or windows.

5. The Rule of Thirds or the Golden Grid

Learning photography composition rules is a great way to emphasize a photo. The placement of the main subject within the photograph can also create emphasis. By positioning the subject off-center or using the rule of thirds, the viewer’s eye is naturally drawn to the subject.

6. Leading Lines

Phil Martin

Leading lines are a composition technique that guides the viewer’s eye through the frame towards the main subject, creating emphasis and visual interest. By strategically placing lines such as roads, fences, or natural elements, photographers can add depth, direction, and movement to their images.

7. Texture

Texture in photography can be a powerful tool to create emphasis and add depth to an image. By capturing the fine details and tactile qualities of a subject, such as the roughness of a tree bark or the smoothness of a glass surface, photographers can evoke a sense of touch and engage viewers on a more sensory level.

The use of texture can draw attention to certain aspects of a photograph, emphasizing their importance and making them visually striking. Whether it’s the intricate patterns of a cobblestone street or the ruggedness of a mountain range, texture can enhance the overall composition and storytelling in photography.

By using contrast and colors, depth of field, framing and composition, lighting and shadows, other techniques discussed you can draw attention to your subject and create images that communicate a message to your audience.

Examples of Emphasis in Photography

As a photographer, it is essential to understand the concept of emphasis in photography. Emphasis is a technique of drawing attention to a specific subject or element in an image. It helps to create a focal point, convey a message, and evoke emotions. Here are some examples of how emphasis is used in various types of photography.

DSLR cameras have revolutionized the world of photography, allowing enthusiasts and professionals alike to capture stunning images with exceptional clarity and detail. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the key aspects of DSLR cameras, including their functionality, advantages, disadvantages, and the ongoing debate between DSLR and mirrorless cameras.

What is a DSLR Camera?

A DSLR, or Digital Single-Lens Reflex, camera combines the convenience of digital technology with the versatility and control of traditional film-based SLR cameras. It features a mirror and prism system that allows you to see directly through the lens when using the viewfinder, providing a real-time preview of the image before capturing it. This feature sets DSLR cameras apart from point-and-shoot cameras, enabling you to have greater control over composition, focus, and exposure.

How do DSLR Cameras Work?

Canon 5D shutter

DSLR cameras function by using a series of components that work in harmony to capture remarkable photographs. When you press the shutter button, the mirror flips up, allowing light to pass through the lens and onto the image sensor.

The image sensor then captures the light and converts it into a digital image file. This process ensures that you obtain high-quality images with accurate color reproduction and exceptional details.

Advantages of Interchangeable Lenses

One of the most significant advantages of DSLR cameras is the ability to use interchangeable lenses. This feature allows you to select the perfect lens for a specific subject or shooting scenario, providing you with endless creative possibilities. Whether you need a wide-angle lens for capturing breathtaking landscapes or a telephoto lens for getting up close to distant subjects, interchangeable lenses give you the flexibility to adapt to various photographic situations.

Advantages of DSLR Cameras

DSLR cameras offer several advantages that make them a preferred choice for many photographers. Firstly, they provide exceptional image quality, thanks to their large image sensors and large lens selection. This enables you to capture images with high resolution, low noise, and superior dynamic range, resulting in stunningly detailed photographs.

Secondly, DSLRs offer excellent control over settings, allowing you to fine-tune parameters such as aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. The manual control offered by DSLR cameras empowers photographers to experiment creatively and achieve their desired artistic vision.

Many photographers also prefer an optical viewfinder over a digital one. While a digital viewfinder allows a photographer to see exactly how a picture will turn out an optical one is more true to life since you’re actually looking through the lens.

Many photographers also prefer an optical viewfinder over a digital one. While a digital viewfinder allows a photographer to see exactly how a picture will turn out, an optical one is more true to life, as you’re actually looking through the lens.

DSLR cameras have a longer battery life compared to other types of cameras because they use a screen less. This means you can take more photos without needing to recharge the battery as often.

Lastly, DSLR cameras have a wide range of compatible accessories, including external flashes, remote triggers, and battery grips, among others. These accessories further enhance the capabilities of DSLRs, providing photographers with additional versatility and functionality.

Disadvantages of DSLR Cameras

While DSLR cameras have numerous advantages, they are not without their limitations. One primary drawback of DSLRs is their size and weight. Due to the mirror and prism mechanisms, DSLR camera bodies tend to be larger and bulkier compared to mirrorless cameras. This can make them less convenient for everyday use and traveling.

Another disadvantage is the complexity of DSLR cameras. The extensive manual controls and settings can be overwhelming for beginners or those who prefer a more streamlined shooting experience. Additionally, DSLRs often come with a higher price tag, especially when considering the cost of lenses and accessories. This may pose a financial barrier for some photographers, particularly those on a tight budget.

It’s also important to know that a lot of brands now focus exclusively on mirrorless technology. Canon for example has stopped developing their DSLR lines meaning no new lenses will be made for them.

Mirrorless or DSLR?

The size of your camera sensor can make a huge difference in your photos mainly affecting image quality and focal length. I’ve found that beginners to photography commonly have issues understanding the differences between different types of sensors.

No matter if you’re using Canon, Sony, or Nikon most brands sell full-frame and crop sensor cameras. In this post we’ll go over the main differences between a full frame vs crop sensor.

Full Frame vs Crop Sensor Explained

Full-frame and crop sensors are two types of image sensors commonly found in digital cameras, this includes all DSLR and mirrorless cameras. Now let’s dive into a quick overview of the main differences between full frame and crop sensors.

Full-frame sensors are larger and offer a wider field of view, capturing more light and producing higher image quality. They are typically used in professional-grade cameras and are preferred by photographers who require exceptional detail and low-light performance.

On the other hand, crop sensors are smaller and have a narrower field of view, resulting in a more magnified image. They are commonly found in entry-level and mid-range cameras, offering a more affordable option for casual photographers. One other advantage of a smaller sensor is faster sensor read outs which make them frequently used for action photography like wildlife.

While both sensor types have their advantages and disadvantages, understanding the differences between them can help photographers make informed decisions when choosing a camera.

Now let’s take a deep dive into the two sensor sizes.

Understanding Sensor Size

Before we delve further into the comparison, it is crucial to grasp the concept of sensor size. In simple terms, the sensor is the component in a camera that captures light and converts it into an image. The size of the sensor directly affects the field of view, image quality, and low-light performance.

Full Frame Sensors: Large & Detailed

Canon EOS R8 sensor
Canon EOS R8 full-frame sensor

With a full frame sensor, the dimensions are akin to a 35mm film cameras, measuring approximately 36mm x 24mm. The larger sensor size provides several advantages over its crop sensor counterpart. Firstly, it allows for a wider field of view and captures more detail, making it ideal for landscape photography.

Additionally, full frame sensors excel in low-light situations due to their larger pixel size. The larger pixels gather more light, resulting in less noise and better overall image quality. This results in better image quality at high ISOs. If you find yourself shooting in dimly lit scenarios, a full frame camera will typically out ahead.

Crop Sensor Cameras: Small & Versatile

Canon EOS R50 cropped sensor
Canon EOS R50 APS-C sensor

Crop sensor cameras have a smaller sensor size, typically around 1.5 to 1.6 times smaller than a full frame sensor. This crop factor affects the effective focal length of the lens, giving it a narrower field of view. While this may be seen as a disadvantage for wide-angle shots, it can be beneficial for telephoto or wildlife photography, allowing you to get closer to the subject without investing in expensive lenses.

Crop sensor cameras are generally more affordable compared to their full frame counterparts. If budget is a concern, a crop sensor camera can provide excellent image quality and performance without breaking the bank.

Image Quality and Depth of Field

When it comes to image quality, both full frame and crop sensor cameras can produce stunning results. However, there are slight differences worth noting. Due to the larger pixel size, full frame sensors often exhibit better dynamic range (especially when shooting RAW) and color reproduction. This means they can capture a wider range of tones and colors, resulting in more vibrant and lifelike images.

On the other hand, crop sensor cameras tend to have a deeper depth of field. This means that more of the image will be in focus, which can be advantageous for genres such as landscape and street photography. Conversely, full frame cameras offer a shallower depth of field, creating a pleasing background blur that is favored by portrait photographers.

Considerations for Lens Selection

Another crucial aspect to consider when choosing between full frame and crop sensor cameras is lens selection. Since full frame cameras have a larger sensor size, they require lenses specifically designed for this format. These lenses tend to be more expensive and heavier. However, they often offer wider apertures, which can be beneficial for low-light photography and achieving that creamy bokeh effect.

Canon R5 at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool

Crop sensor cameras, on the other hand, have a wider range of lens options available. They can utilize lenses designed for both full frame and crop sensor cameras. This versatility gives photographers more choices when building their gear collection and allows for greater flexibility in various shooting situations.

Focal Length Differences on Sensor Sizes

One of the biggest differences between full frame and crop sensors is how much of the image is captured with the lens.

Canon’s cropped APS-C camera sensor which is on the Canon T5i, R7, and M5 for example are cropped about 1.6x the original image. Below you can see the different in the amount of the image that is captured with the same lens.

For example a 35mm lens on a crop sensor will be equivalent to a 56mm lens. You can use a tool like a crop sensor calculator to calculate focal length of different lenses on full frame bodies vs cropped.

Cropped Sensor Comparison 35mm Canon
35mm Lens on a Full Frame vs Cropped Sensor

It is important to know that a lot of lenses are full frame lenses and designed for full-frame sensors. Lenses designed for a crop sensor like RF-S lenses can be smaller since they optically are only capturing enough information for a cropped sensor.
