Photographing a total solar eclipse is a special experience. On April 8, 2024, my friend Kevin and I set out to capture the eclipse from Perryville Regional Airport in Missouri. This was my second time seeing a total solar eclipse, and it was even better than I expected.

Previously I had been in North Carolina and only saw a sliver of the sky from the woods. For this experience since it was at an airfield in a flat area I could see 360 degrees of sunset when the total eclipse started. The sky turned dark, the temperature dropped, and for a few brief moments, time seemed to stop.

In this post, I’ll share our journey, give important photography tips/gear, and capture the magic of this incredible event.

For this eclipse I was equip with eclipse glasses from B&H Photo. If you are planning to see an eclipse make sure to get ISO 12312-2 Compliant glasses from a trusted merchant. During this eclipse I noticed many sellers later recalled their product, staring at the sun can of course damage your vision.

Eclipse glasses are essential to viewing the eclipse, before and after totality. During totality you can remove them and enjoy the view with your naked eyes.

It is quite amazing to see the moon obscure the sun, even when the eclipse is just starting.

After about an hour from the start of the eclipse we got to experience totality. This is when planning because essential since there you view the eclipse will affect how much time you have and if you are even able to see totality.

It is such an incredible feeling, you can just feel the energy in the air around you. During totality you can take off your eclipse glasses and view the moon covering the sun with your naked eye. I loved the 360 degree sunset surrounding us as I could hear insects and see street lights turning on. It’s quite the challenge to juggle cameras and experiencing it for yourself in the brief 4 minutes of totality.

Gear for Eclipse Photography

• Camera (preferably high resolution to capture as much detail as possible.)
• Lens (preferably around 200-300mm), extreme telephoto lenses are great for capture close up details of the sun but your frame will be plenty full at 300mm.
• Tripod (not required but makes the process a lot easier, especially when heavily zoomed in.)
• Solar Filter for your Lens, sustained sun to your camera sensor can damage your sensor. This is where a solar filter is essential. Keep in mind you’ll take this off during totality.

Photos of the 2024 Eclipse

Here’s a collection of my photos from the 2024 eclipse. I shot most of these with my Canon EOS R5 and the Canon RF 100-500mm lens. The clarity and detail are breathtaking. The high resolution of the EOS R5 captured the subtleties of the eclipse perfectly. This setup allowed me to zoom in close and get those remarkable shots of the sun’s corona and the moon’s shadow.

My only mistake while photographing the eclipse was zooming out half way though. Since I was juggling so much with this experience I didn’t notice I lost focus (since I had manually focused the shot). Next time I photograph an eclipse I plan on keeping my focal point the same so I don’t have to worry about this aspect.

• Geographical Information: GPS data including coordinates, if available.
• Time and Date: The exact moment when the photo was captured.
• Copyright Information: If set it’ll also write the photographers name into the metadata.

Diving deeper, EXIF data provides insights into the technicalities of each shot. This includes comprehensive details like metering mode, flash usage, image compression type, and pixel dimensions. It’s like having a behind-the-scenes look at your photography settings, giving you a chance to analyze and learn from each exposure.

EXIF Data Across Various File Formats

EXIF data isn’t limited to a single image format. It spans across various file types:

• JPEG and JPG: Popular formats that embed a wide range of EXIF data.
• RAW: The unprocessed ‘negatives’ of digital photography, RAW files contain extensive EXIF data, crucial for post-processing.
• TIFF: A format often used in professional settings, supporting a comprehensive array of EXIF information.

When using a photo editing app like Adobe Lightroom you can filter all of your photos based on their EXIF data. For example you can filter all photos you’ve taken with a specific lens.

How to View and Utilize EXIF Data

Accessing EXIF data is straightforward and can be done through:

• Operating Systems: Both Windows and macOS offer native ways to view EXIF data. In Windows, right-clicking on a photo and selecting ‘Properties’ reveals this information. On macOS, using ‘Show Inspector’ in Preview does the trick. I’ve noticed on macOS at least it won’t show every single EXIF item but just a few key elements.
• Photo Editing Software: Tools like Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop not only display but also let you edit this data.
• Dedicated EXIF Viewers: For an in-depth analysis, dedicated EXIF viewing software or online tools like Online EXIF Viewer provide a comprehensive look at the metadata.

Keep in mind that if you find a photograph online many web servers remove EXIF data to improve the size of images. This includes many large websites and social media sites. So if no EXIF data is available on an image you find it doesn’t mean an image never had EXIF data. For example when sharing images from iPhone Apple has an option to remove the location data of the image from the image’s EXIF data.

Why EXIF Data Matters in Photography

EXIF data is can be more than just numbers and technical jargon. It has practical applications in photography:

• Improving Photography Skills: By examining the EXIF data, you can understand what camera settings were used and how they affected the outcome of your photos. • Disabling Geotagging: Many cameras and smartphones offer the option to disable geotagging to prevent the recording of location EXIF metadata.

If you are more technical using a tool like ExifTool will allow you to view and modify EXIF data with command line.

Here’s my step-by-step guide on how to update the firmware on your Canon camera.

Getting Started

The process to download a firmware file I will admit is a bit cumbersome. I am hoping they improve this in the future but here’s the step by step guide to downloading a firmware file from Canon.

Download the Firmware

Start by visiting the main Canon site and searching for your camera using the search bar.

Then once you’re on a camera’s page you can click the support button which will take you to the download section for the camera.

Once you are on the specific camera’s support page you can head do downloads and select your OS/OS version. The .FIR files for Canon cameras are universal so I find it really odd you have to do this. But if you select the latest MacOS for example the firmware won’t show up for whatever reason. So if you don’t see the firmware update try selecting a lower version of your OS. (For example I am on MacOS 14 but selecting MacOS 13).

You can scroll the file list to fine your camera’s firmware update as seen below. Remember to save the file in a location that is easily accessible. The package usually contains a .FIR file, which is the firmware update, along with detailed installation instructions in English.

Charge Your Camera Battery

Before you begin the firmware update, ensure that your camera battery is fully charged. This precaution avoids the risk of disrupting the update process.

Format a Memory Card

If you are going to update the firmware using a memory card (which I recommend), it’s essential to format the memory card for use in the camera. Remember to back up any images you want to keep from the card before formatting it. You can format your card on your camera or on your computer (here’s my guide to formatting SD cards on Mac.) Always format the card in the camera that will undergo the firmware update.

Ways to Update

There are two methods to update the firmware of your Canon camera:

1. Updating via Memory Card (Recommended): After formatting the memory card, transfer the firmware update file (.FIR) to the root directory of the card. After doing this insert the card into the camera and navigate to the firmware update option in the camera’s menu. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update process.
2. Updating via EOS Utility Software: Install the EOS Utility software on your computer and connect the camera using a USB cable. Open the EOS Utility and select the camera model to initiate the firmware update process. Follow the on-screen instructions provided by the software to complete the update.

Here are the first three things I recommend doing when you first get any camera:

Ensure you record the serial number: It is wise to make a note of your camera’s serial number as you never know when you might need it. Whether you save it in a notes app or register it on Canon’s website, be sure to write down the serial number.

Charge the R100 battery: Although it may be tempting to immediately start using your new camera, I recommend fully charging the battery to ensure a smooth beginning.

Update the firmware: It is important to keep the R100 camera up to date, and you can find the latest firmware on Canon’s website. Read more about updating the firmware on my full Canon firmware update guide.

Of course you’ll also want to insert your SD card (Recommended Canon R100 SD Cards) and set the camera’s date and time after starting it for the first time.

The Canon R100 is an excellent mirrorless camera for beginners. Here are the photography settings I suggest for the R100. Keep in mind you’ll need to turn the R100 off of auto to see the full menu system so you’ll likely want to put it on P for Program. You’ll also need to turn Display Level to standard for the full Canon menu.

Here are the best settings for the Canon EOS R100:

Shooting Menu 1: Image Quality: To get the best quality from the R100, it’s best to turn on RAW format and turn off JPEG. RAW lets your camera capture the highest quality and is made for editing. If you’re just taking casual pictures, you might like JPEG. But if you’re serious about photography, you’ll want to turn on RAW.

Shooting Menu 2: ISO speed settings: Max for Auto.

Shooting Menu 1: Auto Lighting Optimizer: The Auto Lighting Optimizer won’t change RAW photos, but it will change how RAW images look before you take the picture, which might affect how you shoot. If you’re using JPEG, keep this setting as it is.

Shooting Menu 3: High ISO speed NR: I set this to low because you can always add more noise reduction in Lightroom while editing your photos.

Shooting Menu 5: MF peaking settings: Peaking: You’ll benefit using focus peaking when you are using manual focus. When enabled, anything you are manually focusing on will display a red pixel.

Shooting Menu 5: AF-assist beam firing: The camera will shine an orange light to aid focusing in low-light situations. While this feature has its uses, I find that the camera’s autofocus in low light to be more than adequate, so I usually turn it off.

Shooting Menu 5: Focus/control ring: Great to know where this option, this allows you to set the control ring on lenses to focus or control. Many RF lenses have a dedicated focus ring but this setting is useful for the kit lens if you want the ring to do one specific action.

Shoot Menu 6: Drive mode: This will heavily depend on what you’re shooting but it’s good to know where this is located. Here you can set the camera to only take one photo or multiple when holding down the shutter button. You can also set self timers here.

Shooting Menu 6: Review duration: Here you can change the duration of the review image after taking a photo. This of course if your preference, I am okay with the default setting here.

Shooting Menu 7: Shooting info. disp.: Screen info. settings: I prefer to deactivate some of these to decrease the screens you need to scroll through when changing views. I prefer to use 2, 3, and 4, with 3 showing the level and histogram and 4 giving a clear view. However, this is completely your choice.

Shooting Menu 7: Shooting info. disp.: Grid display: Apply a grid overlay to your image here. The 3×3 grid helps you align shots according to the rule of thirds.

Shooting Menu 7: Shooting info. disp.: Histogram disp: Convert this to RGB and set the size to small. This will enable you to view the histogram of all color channels while shooting, while maintaining a much smaller display.

Shooting Menu 7: Disp. performance: The display performance is initially set to power-saving, which works well for most people. If you’ll be capturing lots of fast-moving subjects or action scenes, you’ll want to change it to smooth. This setting determines the screen’s refresh rate.

Playback Menu 5: Playback information display: I like to only use options 1 through 3 when looking at images because there are too many menus to go through otherwise. This will depend on what you like, of course.

Wireless Menu 1: Airplane mode: To save battery, activate airplane mode when the camera’s Wi-Fi is not in use. Deactivate airplane mode to transfer photos to your phone using Wi-Fi.

Setup Menu 1: Format card: It’s helpful to know where to find this option. When you format your SD card, you’ll delete all the content on it. This is handy when you’ve backed up all your photos and want to begin anew.

Setup Menu 1: Auto Rotate: Selecting “On computer” will prevent the image from rotating during review. The default setting may cause annoyance as the screen rotates with the camera during review. Using the “On computer” option will ensure that images are correctly oriented (landscape/portrait) when viewed off the camera.

Setup Menu 2: Beep: Each time the camera focuses, it emits a beep that may become bothersome over time. You can disable this feature here.

Setup Menu 4: Copyright information: You can enter your name and copyright details here to have them added to the metadata of all the images.

Setup Menu 4: Firmware: Just great to be aware this is where you update your firmware.

Display Level Settings Menu, Tab 1: Menu Display: Standard, while the guided option my be good for beginners anyone familiar with he menus will want this set to standard.

Display Level Settings Menu, Tab 1: Mode guide: Disable, every time you change modes by default the mode guide will pop up a large screen introducing the mode. While great for beginners experienced users will get frustrated by this.

Planning Your Visit

If you’re planning to visit the Korean War Veterans Memorial, you’ll find it conveniently located just southeast of the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall in Washington DC. One of the unique aspects of this memorial is that it is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, allowing visitors to pay their respects at any time. Whether you choose to visit during the day or in the evening, you’ll be greeted by a serene and contemplative ambiance. The memorial is easily accessible and well worth a visit when exploring the nation’s capital.

How to get to the Korean War Memorial

Many of the metro stations are approximately one mile away from the Korean War Veterans Memorial, so you will have to walk a bit to reach the memorial. The most convenient metro stations for the Korean War Veterans Memorial are Foggy Bottom (0.9 miles away) and the Smithsonian (1.2 miles away).

Hourly parking is usually available on Ohio Drive SW, which is just a couple of blocks away. If you arrive at sunrise, when there is typically ample parking, you can park on Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway, where there are parking spots on both sides of the road near the memorial. Visiting the Korean War Memorial is completely free and open all day, allowing you to freely explore the grounds.

If you need to use a bathroom while at the memorial you can head over to the Lincoln Memorial. There are public restrooms located underneath the Lincoln Memorial, but they often have a line.

History and Culture

The Korean War Veterans Memorial is a place where history and culture intertwine, offering a glimpse into the past and honoring those who served in Korea. As you wander through the memorial, you’ll encounter several key features that symbolize the sacrifices made during the war. The most iconic of these features is the Wall of Remembrance, which depicts haunting images of soldiers in juniper bushes, representing the harsh conditions and difficult terrain they faced during the conflict.

Another notable feature is the Pool of Remembrance, a reflective basin that serves as a reminder of the immense loss and the tears shed during the war. Surrounding the pool are granite markers etched with powerful quotations that capture the spirit and resilience of the soldiers who fought in Korea.

The recently renovated Pool of Remembrance sits along side the memorial’s large black granite wall reading “Freedom is not free”.

“The Forgotten War”

Often referred to as “The Forgotten War,” the Korean War is a significant chapter in American history that deserves recognition. It was a conflict that spanned from 1950 to 1953, involving the United States and its allies in a battle against communist forces. The war resulted in the division of Korea into North and South, with the demilitarized zone becoming a lasting symbol of the tensions that remain to this day.

The United States played a crucial role in the Korean War, sending troops and providing support to South Korea. Approximately 36,500 American soldiers lost their lives, and over 103,000 were wounded during the conflict. However, when viewing the original HDR photos on an HDR monitor, there’s a subtle yet noticeable improvement in the HDR processing on the iPhone 15 Pro, showcasing better dynamic range and color accuracy (not pictured).

The wide-angle lens on the iPhone 15 Pro also reaps the benefits of the enhanced HDR processing, presenting clearer and vibrant images. Despite these improvements, the overall performance of the wide-angle lens remains largely comparable to that of the iPhone 14 Pro.

Here’s another example on the main camera; I do love the addition of a 24, 28, and 35mm button in the camera app on the iPhone 15 Pro. It allows for swift adjustments to the focal length, offering more creative freedom while framing your shots.

Glare was a recurring issue in many of my iPhone 14 Pro photos, leading me to believe there might have been a flaw with the lens coating on my particular unit. Fortunately, the iPhone 15 Pro seems to have rectified this issue, as I haven’t experienced any glare in the photos taken with the new model.

The maximum zoom capability hasn’t seen a significant enhancement, with the exception of the iPhone 15 Pro Max which boasts a 5x optical lens.
