I will add “The Left Hand of Darkness” to my reading list.

As recommendation I’ll suggest GREG EGAN (https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/32699.Greg_Egan, http://gregegan.customer.netspace.net.au/ORTHOGONAL/ORTHOGONAL.html). He imagines such otherwordly universes they need a separate book just to explain how they work :)

Comment on Osteochondral Autograft Transfer System (OATS) by Liviu Ionescu https://ilegeul.wordpress.com/2012/06/23/oats/#comment-192 Tue, 30 Dec 2014 12:27:17 +0000 http://ilegeul.livius.net/?p=886#comment-192 In reply to Sabina.

To walk, a few months, but to travel actively… it is complicated. For me ‘travel actively’ means hiking and I still have difficulties to do it, after a few hours of walking on rough terrain I start to feel discomfort then pain. Otherwise I walk regularly about 6 km without any problems, and occasionally I even jog 3-4 km, but there are also moments when I feel discomfort on normal walks. Maybe you are different, but personally I would be very careful, especially until the doctors confirm that the transplant was successful (preferably via a laparoscopic view).

I’m 3.5 months post op and am intending to travel to Asia for a 3 week trip. Thoughts?

Hello Shannon,

I’m currently more or less ok, I can walk, I can go up/down stairs without any problems, I can sprint moderately if needed, and I can even run, but not as fast and certainly not as long as before (I was doing 12-15km twice a week, now I occasionally do 3km), so I try to compensate with long walks.

With some warm-up, the ankle mobility seems almost normal, much better for movements that I repeat often, and with some stiffness for unusual movements (like walking on rough mountain tracks).

Skating is also one of the unusual activity, and although I don’t feel any pain with my skates on (ice or rollerblades), afterwards I need some time to return to my normal ‘pedestrian’ attitude.

In May 2014, when I’ll have 2 years from the surgery, I plan a MRI to check the status of the cartilage, to know how much I can push with more intensive activities.

I have now had 2 OATS procedures on my left ankle (last one about 3 years ago) and I’m just devastated that I can’t run. The first procedure failed (took the graft from my knee) but the second procedure seemed better (cadaver bone). The doctor warns me that the graft is so large now, that it would be difficult to do a 3rd procedure, and he doesn’t recommend running. I ignored him for awhile (it seems all doctors say not to run) but I think he was right. After getting my mileage up to around 5k, I started having severe pain walking. An MRI confirmed lots of swelling and cysts in the ankle. I have stopped running, but I can’t find a substitute that I love like running. Have you had any luck? I’m just heartbroken, and have gained 20 lbs. I don’t want to be in pain for the rest of my life, but I don’t want to give up doing the things I love. I’ve really struggled with this… right now I’m going through a patch of pain and it is just completely disheartening.

I recognize the lightly cynical Liviu that I once met more frequently.
Coming from you, it may make a busy person like me to actually read the book.
