Australia 2 Million Books Gifted

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in Australia has reached a remarkable milestone
with the delivery of its 2 millionth book this month.

This achievement highlights the program’s ongoing commitment to inspiring a love of reading and expanding access to books for children across Australia. The milestone is backed by world-leading Australian research that shows the Imagination Library’s impact on children’s early literacy and home reading environments.

A Powerful Story of Impact and World-Leading Research

Out of Australia came the world’s largest research study on shared book-reading and the Imagination Library. Led by Dr Claire Galea (2025), the research drew on data from more than 86,000 families worldwide and showed that children on the Imagination Library have a significant head start in their lifelong learning journey. Children on the program are more likely to show key emerging literacy skills, have a greater interest in books and reading, and experience a stronger reading culture at home compared to children not on the program. Families consistently report that receiving books each month has helped create a positive and enjoyable shared reading environment in the home.

Highlighting Indigenous Voices in 2026

In 2026, the Imagination Library in Australia continues to strengthen its focus on representation and inclusivity through the selection of books that reflect the diversity of Australian families. This includes a strong emphasis on stories by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors and illustrators. This year’s book list featured titles include:

  • Australian Babies – Magabala Books
  • Claws, Eyes, Flippers – Dub Leffler
  • Today’s Sun – Gregg Dreise
  • Counting With Country – Annette Sax
  • Animals Move – Dub Leffler
  • Aussie Twos Like To – Magabala Books
  • With Sky Country – Annette Sax
  • Backyard Footy – Carl Merrison and Samantha Campbell
  • Yurri’s Birthday – Dr Sue Atkinson and Annette Sax
  • Rocky And Louie – Phillip Walleystack, Raewyn Caisley and Dub Leffler

These stories help children connect with Country, learn about culture, and see themselves reflected in the books they read.

2 Million Books and Counting

As the Imagination Library in Australia celebrates this 2 million-book milestone, it continues to look ahead with purpose and passion. Putting a book in a child’s hand opens a whole new world to them. The Imagination Library delivered by United Way Australia brings the magic of reading into Australian homes – kick-starting a lifelong love of reading and creating an evidence-based pathway for a child’s success in later life.

How Kiwanis Club is Partnering with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library

When Kiwanis member Angelo Ciardella first heard about Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, he knew it was a perfect fit for the Kiwanis mission — empowering children to thrive in communities that believe in them.

“The vision of Kiwanis International is that one day, all children will wake up in communities that nurture and support them,” says Angelo Ciardella, Membership Chair of the Kiwanis Club of Windsor. “The Imagination Library is the perfect tool for Kiwanis clubs to add into our service arsenals.”

What started as a single club’s effort in Windsor has since blossomed into a coordinated regional initiative — uniting Kiwanis clubs across Southwestern Ontario to bring free books into the hands of children from birth to age five. Each month, enrolled children receive a high-quality, age-appropriate book addressed to them personally and mailed right to their homes.

Building a Movement, One Club at a Time

Angelo has been described as the driving force behind this growing regional network. His passion and persistence have helped connect clubs, inspire new partnerships, and expand the reach of the Imagination Library across dozens of communities. “I love being able to collaborate with other Kiwanis clubs and bring a common project to fruition,” he says. “It’s an amazing honour to present to clubs, answer questions, and introduce our members to the amazing Imagination Library staff. Sharing the mission and vision of the Imagination Library has been a highlight of my service journey.”

For Kiwanis clubs, the appeal is immediate. “Kiwanians love service,” Angelo laughs. “Once clubs realize the secret sauce of the Imagination Library, it becomes a no-brainer.” Starting with his home club in Windsor, he worked strategically — club by club — spreading what he proudly calls “the Dolly Fever.

Turning Challenges Into Impact

Angelo admits that not every club jumped on board right away. Many long-established clubs, deeply rooted in their communities, were hesitant to change course. “Many clubs are well established, which is phenomenal — but that also means they can be set in their ways,” he says. “I remind them that we can’t keep doing what we’ve always done if we expect to grow and meet the ever-evolving needs of youth in our communities.” It only took one club to buy in before others followed.

One standout example is the Kiwanis Club of Chatham-Kent, which has embraced the Imagination Library “in full force.” “Literacy has always been their focus,” says Angelo. “The adoption of the Imagination Library was a natural fit. Their club has seen increased community interest, new members, a more vibrant connection with their community, and real impact — with over 600 children receiving books every month.” The ripple effect has been transformative: families reading together, stronger community bonds, and energized volunteers who see the tangible difference they’re making.

Creative Fundraising and Community Spirit

To fund the program, Kiwanis clubs have unleashed a wave of creativity. “From pasta dinners and trivia nights to euchre tournaments, birthday donations, bus trips, theatrical performances, bottle drives, and memorial gifts — clubs have embraced the full gamut of opportunities to raise funds,” Angelo explains. His advice to other clubs is simple: “Doing the same old same only results in the same old same. I encourage clubs to try new approaches and not be afraid to fail. The worst that can happen is it turns into a learning opportunity.”

For Angelo, the motivation runs deep. “I choose to serve because I have been served,” he reflects. “Giving back to my community is an integral part of who I am. Servant leadership was instilled in me at a young age and keeps me going. I believe we are to leave the world better than we found it — and through serving our children, we can ensure they have what they need to thrive.”

And when he’s asked to sum up the spirit of Kiwanis’ role in one word, he doesn’t hesitate. “Community. Kiwanians all around the world choose to serve their great communities to make them better, safer, richer places to live, learn, and grow. Our partnership with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is the perfect way to continue that service.”

Fueling Momentum Across Canada

The momentum in Southwestern Ontario is undeniable — and contagious.

“Knowing that Kiwanis is doing our part to inspire the love of reading in hundreds of children brings me so much joy,” says Angelo. “Through this service, we expand our own mission — and Dolly’s. This investment in the future of our youth is priceless.”

He hopes this regional movement will inspire other service clubs and Kiwanis districts across Canada. “Every service club has an important role to play in making their communities a better place to live and grow,” he says. “If we can do it, so can you!”

UK Annual Report Highlights

Over 6 million free books gifted, new community programmes launched, and literacy gains celebrated

The Dollywood Foundation UK is delighted to announce the release of its 2024 Annual Report, which celebrates a year of growth and impact for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in the UK and beyond. The report highlights the continued growth of the Imagination Library and the impact of its mission to inspire a lifelong love of reading in every child, and the latest figures show that vision in action.

Celebrating a Milestone Year

Since its launch in 2007, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has mailed over 6 million books to children under five throughout the UK and beyond. In 2024 alone, 674,819 books were delivered to more than 76,000 young readers, thanks to the efforts of 330 local programme partners who make the dream of a book each month a reality.

Expanding Reach Across the UK

Two new community-wide programmes launched in East Riding of Yorkshire and the London Borough of Lambeth, extending the reach of the Imagination Library to even more children and families. By year’s end, thousands of books had already reached homes in these new communities.

Across Scotland, the Imagination Library was showcased at a three-day Scottish Parliament exhibition, generating cross-party interest and inspiring new collaboration. The event also marked the beginning of a partnership with Better World Books, which is helping to expand access to free books for children across Scotland.

Evidence of Impact

Research highlighted in the report continues to demonstrate the life-changing impact of the Imagination Library. In North Lincolnshire, children enrolled in the programme achieved significantly higher early literacy results—67.1% reached a good level of development compared to 52.6% of their peers. In Renfrewshire, more than 100 early years professionals reported that participation in the programme has strengthened family engagement and raised the profile of reading for pleasure in their communities.

Looking Ahead

The 2024 Annual Report underscores how simple acts—like sharing a story—can spark lifelong change. With the dedication of local partners, funders, and families, The Dollywood Foundation continues to further its mission to inspire a lifelong love of reading in children across the United Kingdom, ensuring that every child can grow up in a home full of books and possibility.

Mission of Hope - Imagination Library Partnership

Imagination Library Book Pallets Help Fund Higher Education for Appalachian Students

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has long been a beacon of literacy and learning, gifting more than 290 million books to children in five countries around the world. Each month in the USA alone, more than 3.2 million books make their way from the printing press to children’s mailboxes—inspiring a love of reading in young children and families everywhere.

But the impact doesn’t end when a child opens a book. Hidden in the logistics of delivering millions of books is an unexpected source of hope for students in Appalachia: the very pallets used to ship them.

A Second Life for Every Pallet

Behind every book’s journey is a network of dedicated partners, including Direct Mail Services (DMS), a Knoxville-based company that has worked with the Imagination Library since its earliest days in Sevier County. DMS carefully processes and ships millions of books each month, ensuring they reach children across the country on time and in perfect condition. Once those books are safely on their way, the pallets that carried them are no longer needed for mailing—but they’re far from done making a difference.

Mission of Hope - Imagination Library Partnership - Direct Mail Services pallets

From Warehouse Floor to Scholarship Fund

Those 48 × 40-inch GMA pallets—North America’s most widely used and versatile size—are donated to Mission of Hope, a nonprofit serving rural Appalachian families with essential goods, resources, and educational support. Resold to grocery chains, manufacturers, and distribution centers for about $7–$12 each, the pallets generate thousands of dollars every month. Their standard size and ISPM 15 compliance make them highly valuable in the logistics industry, and every dollar from these sales goes directly into Mission of Hope’s scholarship program.

At the heart of Mission of Hope is the belief that education is the most powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty. Since 2009, the organization has awarded scholarships to students in the Appalachian communities it serves—13 each year to graduating high school seniors, plus one annual scholarship each to students attending Alice Lloyd College and Lincoln Memorial University.

These scholarships aren’t just financial aid—they’re lifelines. Many recipients have overcome family hardships, economic challenges, and personal struggles that could have kept them from continuing their education. Scholarships can be used for 2-year, 4-year, trade, or vocational schools, and each student is paired with a Mission of Hope mentor who provides encouragement and guidance along the way. Nearly 100 students have graduated with the help of this program, creating a ripple effect that strengthens entire families and communities.

Making a Difference, One Pallet at a Time

The partnership between Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, Direct Mail Services, and Mission of Hope shows how every part of a process—even something as ordinary as a shipping pallet—can become a force for good. From warehouse to classroom, the journey transforms simple materials into scholarships, opportunities, and futures once thought unreachable.

If you’d like to support Mission of Hope’s scholarship program, consider donating or volunteering. Every pallet sold—and every book mailed—turns another page in a story of dreaming, learning, and opportunity that will echo for generations to come.

Canada Celebrates 4 Million Books Milestone

Marking a Milestone Moment and Honouring Indigenous Voices in 2025

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has reached a remarkable milestone in Canada: the delivery of its 4 millionth book! This achievement underscores the program’s enduring commitment to inspiring a love of reading and expanding access to books for children across the country.

A Journey of Growth and Impact

Since its Canadian debut in 2006, the Imagination Library has expanded its reach to every province and territory, thanks to the dedication of more than 400 local program partners. These partners play an essential role in enrolling families, securing funding, and promoting the program in their communities. Their efforts ensure that over 60,000 books are delivered each month to children from coast to coast to coast.

Each book is more than just pages and ink—it’s a gift of possibility, imagination, and connection. By providing high-quality, age-appropriate books each month, the Imagination Library helps inspire children to Dream More, Learn More, Care More, and Be More®.

Highlighting Indigenous Voices in 2025

In 2025, the program continues its commitment to representation and inclusivity with a strong focus on Indigenous storytelling. Of the 70 books selected for the Canada Book Selection, eight are authored or illustrated by Indigenous Canadians—each one a reflection of the rich cultural heritage and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities.

Featured titles include:

  • Freddie the Flyer by Danielle Metcalfe-Chenail and Fred Carmichael, illustrated by Audrea Loreen-Wulf
  • On the Trapline by David A. Robertson, illustrated by Julie Flett
  • My Lala by Thomas King, illustrated by Charlene Chua
  • Mnoomin maan’gowing / The Gift of Mnoomin by Brittany Luby, illustrated by Mangeshig Pawis-Sketkley
  • Métis Like Me by Tasha Hilderman, illustrated by Risa Hugo
  • Boozhoo! / Hello! by Laura Deal, illustrated by Tamara Campeau
  • It Bears Repeating by Tanya Tagaq, illustrated by Cee Pootoogook
  • Mii maanda ezhi-gkendmaanh / This is How I Know by Brittany Luby, illustrated by Mangeshig Pawis-Sketkley

These selections provide children with stories that reflect their own lives and introduce them to new cultures and experiences—strengthening the program’s goal of nurturing curiosity and empathy through reading.

4 Million Books and Counting

As the Canadian program celebrates this 4 million book milestone, it continues to look forward with hope and purpose. With ongoing support from communities, partners, and families, the program remains focused on its mission: to inspire a lifelong love of reading in every child, one book at a time.

Oregon Celebrates Full Statewide Coverage of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library

Oregon celebrates a major milestone one year after launching statewide expansion: all Oregon children under 5 are now eligible to receive one free book per month from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library!

Just one year after the official launch of its statewide expansion, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is now available to all children under five in every zip code and county across Oregon. This milestone comes with the addition of the Lower Umpqua Library and Reedsport Rotary Foundation as the program’s 57th Local Program Partner—bringing free monthly books to families in Reedsport and Gardiner.

All 36 Oregon Counties Now Covered

On May 8, 2024, the State of Oregon—through the Department of Early Learning and Care (DELC)—partnered with The Dollywood Foundation to expand the Imagination Library across the state. At the time of the launch, 30 of Oregon’s 36 counties had full program coverage. Now, thanks to the most recent addition in Douglas County, the program is available statewide.

“This is an incredible milestone,” said DELC Director Alyssa Chatterjee. “The goal of the statewide expansion was to ensure that children ages 0–5 in every zip code in Oregon have access to books. With the addition of Reedsport, that goal has been achieved.”

Celebrating One Year of Statewide Expansion

In 2023, the Oregon Legislature allocated $1.7 million in General Funds to DELC through Senate Bill 5506 to support the expansion. The funding established a 50/50 state match to help cover the cost of books and mailing.

Since the launch of the state match, enrollment in the Imagination Library of Oregon has grown from 54,278 to 65,497 children—an increase of more than 11,000 in just one year.

“Seeing people come together to help The Imagination Library of Oregon reach this milestone is inspiring!” said Laurie McNichols, Imagination Library of Oregon State Director. “DPIL is a global program, but at our core we have always been, and will always be, grassroots.”

A Grassroots Effort Backed by State and Local Partners

The Imagination Library of Oregon’s newest local partnership brings the program to families in Reedsport and Gardiner. The effort was made possible through a collaboration between the Lower Umpqua Library, the Reedsport Rotary Foundation, and a grant from the Betsy Priddy Fund of Oregon Community Foundation.

“We are deeply proud to support Dolly Parton’s efforts to help all Oregon children learn to read,” said Lisa Mensah, President and CEO of Oregon Community Foundation. “Partnerships like this one create high quality learning opportunities for our youngest Oregonians in every corner of our state.”

Register a Child

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is free for all families and available statewide. Children can be registered from birth to age five to receive new, high-quality, age-appropriate books addressed to them in the mail each month until their fifth birthday. Registration is quick and easy—enroll now!

“Families that receive books from the Imagination Library are more likely to read with their child more often,” said Kaylee Chrystal, Community Engagement Coordinator for the Imagination Library of Oregon. “We know that 90% of brain development happens before the age of five. Making reading a shared family activity helps to increase language and communication development.”

Lamar Advertising Donates Yearlong Digital Billboard Support to Help Inspire a Love of Reading in Greater Numbers of Children in the U.S.

Lamar Advertising, one of the largest outdoor advertising companies in the world, announced it has selected Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library as its in-kind partner for 2025. Over the next 12 months, Lamar will donate more than two million dollars in digital Out of Home media to help the organization raise awareness of its mission, increase donations, and enroll new children.

Created in 1995 by Dolly Parton, who was inspired by her father’s illiteracy, the Imagination Library is a free book gifting program that sends high-quality, age-appropriate books to children from birth until age five. The Imagination Library follows Boys & Girls Club last year and Make-A-Wish in 2023 as the latest non-profit selected by Lamar for its annual partnership program.

“On behalf of Dolly, The Dollywood Foundation team, and thousands of families and local Imagination Library partners across the U.S., thank you to Lamar Advertising for selecting Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library as their in-kind partner in 2025,” said Jeff Conyers, Vice Chair and President, The Dollywood Foundation. “What a meaningful way to help us celebrate our 30th anniversary. We’re thrilled to leverage the power of Lamar’s nationwide billboard network to raise awareness of our mission and strengthen support for the incredible local partners who bring Dolly’s vision to life in communities across the country.

Since its founding, the Imagination Library has gifted over 270 million books to children around the world, and currently mails more than 3 million books per month to children in the U.S., Canada, the UK, Australia and Ireland. Today in the U.S., one in seven children under five years old receives books from the Imagination Library program. A flagship program of the Dollywood Foundation, the Imagination Library is funded by Dolly Parton and local community partners in the five countries where it operates.

“What started as an effort to benefit children in Dolly Parton’s home state of Tennessee has grown dramatically into a celebrated international book gifting organization promoting literacy across multiple countries,” said Sean Reilly, CEO of Lamar Advertising. “We are thrilled to partner with the Imagination Library this year and look forward to using our digital outdoor network to amplify their message and help deliver the gift of reading to even more children in the U.S.”

2025 Canada Book Selection Indigenous Creators Chosen

We’re excited to announce the Indigenous Creators chosen for the 2025 Canada Book Selection!

Over the past few years, The Dollywood Foundation of Canada has prioritized including Canadian authors and illustrators in the program. The Book Selection Committee, a specially selected panel of early childhood literacy experts, reviews hundreds of potential titles for inclusion in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and chooses 70 titles each year for six age groups. (The Welcome Book and Graduation book remain the same each year).

This year, 58 books (83%) are Canadian, eight of which are from Indigenous creators.

  1. Freddie the Flyer – Author Danielle Metcalfe-Chenail and Fred Carmichael and Illustrated by Audrea Loreen-Wulf
  2. On the Trapline – Author David A. Robertson and Illustrated by Julie Flett
  3. My Lala – Author Thomas King and Illustrated by Charlene Chua
  4. Mnoomin maan’gowing/ The Gift of Mnoomin – Author Brittany Luby and illustrated by Mangeshig Pawis-Sketkley
  5. Métis Like Me – Author Tasha Hilderman and Illustrated by Risa Hugo
  6. Boozhoo!/Hello! – Author Laura Deal and Illustrated by Tamara Campeau
  7. It Bears Repeating – Author Tanya Taguq and illustrated by Cee Pootoogook
  8. Mii maanda ezhi-gkendmaanh/This is How I Know – Author Brittany Luby and illustrated by Mangeshig Pawis-Sketkley
Recent studies suggest participation in the Imagination Library is positively and significantly associated with higher measures of early language and math development. The Blue Ribbon Book Selection Committee takes great care in choosing books that meet the different needs of children as they progress from birth to age five.

Books are like windows, offering views of worlds that may be real or imagined, familiar or strange. Books can also be a mirror reflecting our own lives and experiences.

The Indigenous stories are at the heart of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and help inspire a lifelong love of reading and sharing experiences.
