Amadeus and BAGTAG enable automatic EBT updates at airport self-service bag drop

Amadeus and BAGTAG have strengthened their partnership to make fully touch-free baggage experiences more widely available for airlines and airports. Building on years of technical alignment, the two companies have demonstrated that electronic bag tags (EBTs) can update automatically when baggage is placed at an Amadeus-powered self-service bag drop, without passengers scanning barcodes, opening an app or even touching a screen.

Amadeus provides the departure-control and airport infrastructure relied upon by hundreds of carriers, while BAGTAG brings its EBT-platform solution already connected to 20 airlines globally and supplies airline-branded EBTs that let travellers prepare their baggage from anywhere. By combining these strengths, both organisations are showing how open platforms and close collaboration can simplify baggage processes, reduce paper waste and free valuable airport resources.

“Together with BAGTAG, we’re proving that touchless baggage handling is achievable with the systems many airports already have in place. Our shared focus is on partnership-led innovation that benefits airlines, airports and, most importantly, travellers.”

– Stephane Thao, Head of Seamless Travel Engineering, Airports and Border Authorities, Amadeus

Because the capability sits within existing Amadeus self-service infrastructure, a single configuration enables EBT support for nearly every airline using that platform at a given airport. Locations already equipped with Amadeus bag drops can activate the function with minimal effort, offering passengers a consistent, paper-free experience across multiple carriers.

“This collaboration is about scale and simplicity. Working with Amadeus allows us to bring a seamless, touch-free baggage journey to far more airports and airlines.”
– Jasper Quak, Managing Director, BAGTAG

Amadeus and BAGTAG will continue to explore additional ways their combined technologies can reduce friction in the airport journey and support industry sustainability goals.

Airports or airlines interested in enabling touchless baggage on the Amadeus platform can contact their Amadeus or BAGTAG representative.

Brussels Airlines joins the BAGTAG platform

Brussels Airlines launches electronic bag tags, allowing its passengers to check in and tag their bags using their smartphones. This was facilitated by connecting to the BAGTAG platform.

The BAGTAG Passenger Solution is set to revolutionise the check-in process for Icelandair’s valued travellers. By integrating electronic bag tags, passengers can now experience a seamless and efficient baggage check-in process from the comfort of their home, hotel, or anywhere they like, eliminating the need for traditional paper tags.

BAGTAG app
The BAGTAG application allows passengers to upload their flight information and generate an electronic tag that can be attached to their luggage, checking in from anywhere they like. The electronic tag can then be scanned at the airport, eliminating the need for traditional paper luggage tags.

This means that passengers can skip queues at check-in and head straight to the bag drop area, thus saving time, reducing paper usage and increasing comfort.

“We are committed to providing our passengers with the best possible travel experience. By introducing electronic bag tags, we are making the check-in process faster and more convenient.”

Multi-device solution
Having connected to the BAGTAG platform, Brussels Airlines’ passengers can nowuse their electronic bag tags through the BAGTAG app. They can check-in their baggage digitally with the first and second generation BAGTAGs, BagID tag and/or the RIMOWA eTag.

Innovation milestone
This new launch of electronic bag tags is a significant improvement for Brussels Airlines’ passengers. It showcases the airline’s dedication to using technology to enhance the customer experience.

Brussels Airport test case
Extensive testing was performed at Brussels Airport where various electronic batags were put through the baggage handling system. Once again, the solution proved to be fully backwards compatible showing no issues going through the existing systems.

“I am thrilled to see Brussels Airlines introducing electronic bag tags through our platform. This is a great new airline partner and we can’t wait to see their passengers using their tags on Brussels flights.”

Icelandair becomes the first airline to launch BAGTAG crew solution

Icelandair, the leading Icelandic airline known for its commitment to innovation and operational excellence, proudly announces the launch of the BAGTAG Crew Solution. After a successful PoC, they are introducing the innovation upcoming October, making Icelandair the first airline to introduce the baggage check-in technology specifically designed for crew members. This revolutionary solution brings enhanced efficiency and convenience to the airline’s operations.

The BAGTAG Crew Solution represents a significant leap forward in crew baggage management. By replacing traditional paper tags with electronic bag tags, Icelandair allows its crew members to streamline check-in procedures, eliminate paper waste and optimize the overall crew travel experience.

“We are always looking for ways to improve efficiency within our operations. This simple, smart and environmentally-friendly solution will both streamline our processes and support our mission of offering smooth and enjoyable journeys – not only for our customers but also for our crew” – Haukur Reynisson, Vice President of Flight Operations Icelandair.

The solution leverages backwards compatible plug and-play technology to simplify processes, reduce errors, and enhance baggage handling efficiency. Alaska Airlines’ Charu Jain talks about
introducing electronic bag tags

“Actually create room for that one-on-one time which reflects our vision around personalized customer service.”

Charu is a proven technology leader who integrated hundreds of systems within her 25+ year career.

As Alaska Airlines’ Senior Vice President of Merchandising and Innovation, she’s directly involved with the BAGTAG implementation project

Electronic bag tags allow travelers to check in their baggage remotely, through the airline application. With electronic bag tags, travelers can scan their tag at a self-service kiosk or drop-off point, and then proceed to their gate without waiting in line to check in their bags.

Alaska Airlines, in partnership with BAGTAG, is the first U.S. carrier to introduce electronic bag tags, and they have been well-received by travelers who appreciate the convenience and time-saving aspects of this technology.

Having sent out their first batch of Alaska Airlines BAGTAGs just before the holidays of ’22, it’s time to look back at the implementation process as well as a glance at the future of electronic baggage check-in with Alaska Airlines.

What motivated Alaska Airlines to start digitalizing the baggage labeling process?

Charu: Our goal is to modernize travel at every major city we fly, from reimagining the lobby to testing innovative technology that streamlines the airport experience. We’ve looked at many possible solutions that help us do so and the replacement of the paper labels in combination with the self-drop systems was the next logical step. The electronic bag tag is estimated to reduce the time guests spend in airport lobbies by about 40%.

What really gave us the reassurance we were going in the right direction was the PopSci recognition and of course the positive response of our guests. When we put out the first news we were going to distribute 2.500 BAGTAGs amongst our frequent flyers, the participation list was full in no time.

How is the rollout going so far?

As is the case with introducing any new technology, it can be challenging to get the whole operation instructed from check-in agents to baggage handlers. However, as the tags are fully backward compatible, we didn’t have to make any changes to the actual operations or machinery which made this a fairly smooth process. Together with our service team ready to help with any questions or issues means that so far all has been going to plan. We’re very pleased with the results to date and are looking to the next phases of the project.

What are your future plans regarding electronic bag tags?

It’s definitely something we are looking to further evolve and over the next few months we will continuously learn and adapt from the guests currently flying with Alaska Airlines BAGTAGs out there. This phase really is about optimizing usage for our guests and from that point on we will further expand within operations and make electronic baggage check-in available to everyone. We are very excited about the future and are looking forward to the days when electronic baggage check-in is the new normal.

KLM x BAGTAG take the next step toward
seamless and sustainable baggage check-in

KLM passengers can now create baggage labels at home via the BAGTAG app. The information is loaded on the electronic BAGTAG devices the customer uses.

KLM is one of the first airlines to be featured in the app. With an electronic bag tag passengers don’t have to wait at an airport desk for a paper tag to be printed and manually attached to the baggage. Using an electronic bagtag saves time in the check-in process at the airport for both passenger and airline. By enabling this feature in the BAGTAG app, KLM passengers can use all BAGTAG supported electronic bag tag devices on most KLM flights. This feature includes the first generation Ready to scan NFC tag BAGTAG devices, the recently launched battery-less BAGTAG device and all RIMOWA suitcases with similar built-in technology. “Electronic bag tags will make the check-in process more efficient for our passengers and will help decrease the environmental footprint of paper tags.” – Boet Kreiken, EVP Customer Experience KLM.

More seamless & sustainable
The implementation of electronic bag tags helps KLM to even further improve the customer experience and to decrease the environmental footprint by reducing the use of paper tags. The innovation does not require any operational changes in baggage handling.

At home in Holland
The Dutch carrier has chosen a technology partner close to home, as BAGTAG is founded and developed in the Netherlands. The devices are thus by Dutch design and being so close to base, gave the opportunity to extensively test the concept at KLM’s hub Schiphol.

“We are excited to have “our” own national airline at the forefront of this technology with us and look forward to help further optimising the KLM customer experience – Jasper Quak, Managing, Director BAGTAG.

Qatar Airways is
the first Middle East airline to introduce electronic bag tags

Qatar Airways is the first Middle East airline that has taken the next step to further innovate its passenger journey by introducing electronic bag tags. The concept is produced and executed by BAGTAG, a Dutch company that is a pioneer in the field of baggage technology solutions. This innovation will allow passengers to check in their luggage using their smartphones, making the process faster and more efficient.

BAGTAG’s electronic bag tags are designed to replace traditional non-recyclable paper tags. The reusable electronic device with functional e-paper can be easily prepared and attached to baggage by travellers at home. After checking in for their flight via the Qatar Airways mobile app, passengers can proceed with digitally labelling their bags.

The baggage can then be dropped off at one of the designated areas at the airport. This solution removes the need to check in at the airport entirely, resolving an important bottleneck in the passenger journey.

The introduction of electronic bag tags reflects Qatar Airways’ continuous commitment to its passengers to provide the best possible travel experience. By offering a more touchless and seamless travel journey, the airline continues to ensure its passengers can expect the highest level of service and excellence throughout their trip.

The BAGTAG software implementation was coordinated in cooperation with Amadeus, the travel technology partner of Qatar Airways. Through the BAGTAG and Amadeus collaboration, the airline quickly and seamlessly integrated the solution into their workflow.

Qatar Airways is in fact the first Middle-East airline to introduce electronic bag tags. They are also one of the first airlines to offer a fully customised BAGTAG to their passengers. These will be made available through selected QDF shops later this year.

With the software framework supported by the Qatar Airways application, any electronic bag tag device connected to the BAGTAG platform can be used on QR flights worldwide.
