Building construction protects province for second consecutive month.

Today, Statistics Canada released figures showing that investment in building construction in Saskatchewan increased by 25.6 per cent from January 2025 to January 2026 (seasonally adjusted). This puts the province second in Canada for year-over-year growth.

“With more and more people choosing to call Saskatchewan home, our construction industry is reaping the rewards,” Trade and Export Development Minister Warren Kaeding said. “As more money goes into the sector, we create new jobs, build houses and invest in the infrastructure we need for everyday life. All of this ensures we are protecting Saskatchewan people and communities.”

Total investment in building construction for January 2026 was $650 million.

Investment in building construction is calculated based on the total spending value on building construction within the province.

Statistics Canada’s latest GDP numbers indicate that Saskatchewan’s 2024 real GDP reached an all-time high of $83.6 billion. This puts the province second in the nation for real GDP growth, and above the national average of 2 per cent.

Private capital investment in Saskatchewan increased last year by 12 per cent to $13.6 billion, ranking first among the provinces. Efforts behind the province’s Securing the Next Decade of Growth: Saskatchewan’s Investment Attraction Strategy is driving that momentum.

A business rooted in local agricultural and community traditions.

Scroll through 9 Mile Legacy Brewing’s social media platforms and you’ll see posts from around the province of beers celebrating culture and collaboration on the prairies. The Saskatoon Berries Beer and alcohol-free Barry’s Fastball Fizz commemorate Saskatoon’s Western Canadian Baseball League team. The Main Stage ’25 New Zealand Pilsner is a celebration of the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival, while the Happy Ness Pale Ale is a nod to the popular Ness Creek Music Festival. Partnerships between these art, culture and sporting events, as well as partnerships companies like Nutrien, Farm Credit Canada and the University of Saskatchewan, are just a taste of what 9 Mile Legacy has created and shared across the province.

Shawn Moen standing in front of large stainless steel barrels used for brewing beer in a brewery.

Located in Saskatoon, 9 Mile Legacy has built more than a craft brewery. Founded in 2015 by long-time friends and entrepreneurs Shawn Moen and Garrett Pederson, 9 Mile Legacy takes its name from the nine-mile stretch of farmland that once separated their families’ homesteads. The history of neighbours working side by side is central to the company’s story today. The brewery is as much about community as it is about beer. It has become a model of how Saskatchewan businesses can grow through partnerships, government support and value-added agriculture.

For co-founder and CEO Shawn Moen, collaboration isn’t just a buzzword, it’s a way of doing business. From the beginning, the company has sought out opportunities to work with others in meaningful ways.

One of their earliest projects was a partnership with Odd Couple, an Asian Fusion restaurant that was across from 9 Mile Legacy’s 20th Street location in Saskatoon. This led to a beer called “OC Collab” designed specifically to complement key ingredients on the restaurant’s menu. It became a signature part of the Odd Couple and 9 Mile Legacy experience. What began as a single product evolved into a long-term relationship that strengthened both businesses and built community ties.

Moen believes this spirit of collaboration is part of Saskatchewan’s makeup. This mindset extends beyond brewing – it means creating value that lasts, not just completing one-off transactions.

“In order to collaborate, you need to be learning from one another and you need to be figuring out and meeting each other where your needs are, where your interests are. If you approach things from a transactional perspective, it’s not really collaboration. It has to be relational. It has to be built on something that is long-lasting for it to really endure” explains Moen.

The brewery also plays a role in one of the province’s most important growth areas of value-added agriculture. While the term sounds technical, it simply means finding new ways to transform and improve agricultural products while adding economic, social and community value along the way.

In brewing, that transformation is clear as grains become beer through fermentation, then adding in creativity and innovation. Moen sees it in broader terms, as it’s not just about profit, but about sustainability and food security. In Saskatchewan, where agriculture is foundational to the economy, companies like 9 Mile Legacy demonstrate how value-added processing can create new opportunities while staying rooted in community.

Like many small businesses, the brewery faced challenges in scaling up production while managing costs. That’s where provincial programs have made a difference. In 2019, through the Saskatchewan Lean Improvements in Manufacturing program, they were able to expand to their larger processing facility. This incentive helped alleviate the cost of capital expansion. By lowering upfront costs, the program allowed the company to grow when it otherwise might not have been possible.

Now, with the new Saskatchewan Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Investment Tax Credit, Moen sees another opportunity to build momentum. The three-year pilot offers a 45 per cent tax credit to investors in eligible Saskatchewan businesses. It’s designed to support growth in the food, beverage, machinery and transportation sectors. For breweries like 9 Mile Legacy, there’s potential to raise several million dollars to take the next step in their business.

This combination of entrepreneurial drive and government support highlights Saskatchewan’s commitment to growing a competitive and innovative food and beverage industry. For Moen, the timing couldn’t be better.

“We’re excited about the potential in terms of continuing to grow the crop brewing sector, but also some of the innovative work we’re doing … together we can achieve great things” shares Moen.

Sustainability is another cornerstone of the brewery’s approach. From the beginning, the company has prioritized sourcing local ingredients whenever possible. Their malt comes from within 100 kilometres of Saskatoon, from world-class Prairie Malt in Biggar and craft maltster Maker’s Malt in Rosthern. Their brewing equipment was purchased from suppliers in Western Canada rather than overseas. This was a decision that had a major positive impact when the pandemic disrupted global supply chains.

That commitment to ethical supply and sustainable practices reflects a larger trend in the province’s agribusiness. 9 Mile Legacy is well positioned to offer sustainably produced, ethically sourced and high-quality ingredients to meet the demand of growing global markets.

Saskatchewan’s business environment also plays a role through a stable regulatory environment, supportive government programs and its strong agricultural foundation. For entrepreneurs seeking a place to innovate and grow, the province offers both opportunity and support. This creates conditions where businesses can thrive.

For 9 Mile Legacy, the next chapter will include new collaborations, expanded production and continued contributions to Saskatchewan’s food and beverage industry. At its foundation, the brewery represents exactly what makes Saskatchewan unique: a commitment to working together and a vision for growth that looks both inward to community and gives back outward to the world.

Today, the Government of Saskatchewan hosted the 2026 Saskatchewan Aerospace and Defence Forum in Saskatoon, in conjunction with the Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership, Prairies Economic Development Canada, and the Saskatchewan Aviation Council. The aim of the event was to build connections between key national and international entities in the defence sector, and Saskatchewan companies looking to support the industry.

“Saskatchewan’s Aerospace and Defence Forum connects the province’s manufacturing companies to the global defence sector, creating jobs and opportunities in this important industry,” Trade and Export Development Minister Warren Kaeding said. “Manufacturers in our province are at the forefront of innovative and cutting-edge solutions that international prime defence contractors are in need of.”

This year’s event was attended by some of the most prominent companies in the global defence industry, including Raytheon, SkyAlyne, CAE, and General Dynamics Land Systems. Federal defence institutions that participated included the Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Armed Forces.

Infographic with a group of individuals in business and military attire are seated around a conference table, shaking hands during a networking session at an aerospace and defence forum. The foreground text reads, “Connecting local manufacturers with global defence opportunities.” Text in a green banner at the top read, Aerospace and Defence Forum.

“Calian is pleased to be part of the Saskatchewan Aerospace & Defence Forum, an important event that brings together multiple orders of government, members of the CAF, industry associations and leaders in the Saskatchewan defence ecosystem,” Calian Vice President of Defence Russ Beaudin said. “Calian is ready to play our part. We recently launched Calian VENTURES where we are orchestrating $100 million in capital available for small-medium businesses (SMBs) to connect their leading-edge capabilities within the broader defence System of Systems. We are also playing the role of integrator for C5ISRT in the Canadian defence ecosystem, and SMBs are central to that effort. We are ideally positioned to build solutions in Canada, and partner with strong companies and key innovators to deliver solutions for our armed forces.”

Last month, Canada announced its new Defence Industrial Strategy in which the federal government commits to investing $470 billion in the country’s defence sector by 2035, with a further goal of increasing defence contracts awarded to Canadian firms to 70 per cent. This pledge will benefit Saskatchewan companies that provide goods and services to the sector by attracting new investment to the province’s expanding defence ecosystem.

Saskatchewan has a well-developed advanced manufacturing industry that is already producing items used in the defence sector. Manufacturing is an important economic contributor for the province, with over 29,000 people employed in the industry in 2025. Capital investment in Saskatchewan’s manufacturing sector reached $1 billion in 2025, an 18.3 per cent increase from 2024, while manufacturing sales in the province last year totaled $20.8 billion.

Fifth annual Indigenous Business Gathering sees more than 1,100 attendees.

Today, the Government of Saskatchewan hosted the Indigenous Business Gathering (IBG), one of the largest events of its kind in Canada, in Saskatoon. This gathering, now in its fifth year, plays a vital role in increasing Indigenous participation in the economy, thereby creating strong, vibrant communities throughout the province.

“Saskatchewan is at the forefront of creating economic opportunities for Indigenous Peoples and advancing economic reconciliation in Canada,” Trade and Export Development Minister Warren Kaeding said. “Through the IBG, we are supporting growth for First Nations and Métis-led businesses and organizations by connecting them to potential partners, suppliers, mentors and investors.”

Five per cent of all private-sector businesses in Saskatchewan are Indigenous-owned, according to Statistics Canada. This ranks third among the provinces in this category, above the national average of four per cent. With First Nations and Métis-led businesses forming such a significant portion of the province’s business sector, the demand for an event such as the IBG is clear.

Organizations from all sectors participate in the gathering, one of which includes Sixteen Safety Services, an Indigenous- and woman-owned occupational health and safety company.

“The IBG is one of the most impactful events we participate in each year,” Sixteen Safety Services President and CEO Andrea Crittenden said. “We’ve proudly attended since the beginning, and it undoubtedly continues to create meaningful economic opportunities by directly connecting Indigenous businesses with organizations seeking trusted partners. The relationships built here continue to strengthen not only our organization, but communities across Saskatchewan.”

Saskatchewan is further contributing to economic reconciliation through the Saskatchewan Indigenous Investment Finance Corporation (SIIFC), which was established to increase access to capital for Indigenous communities and entities to participate in natural resource development and value-added agriculture projects. This past year, George Gordon Developments received a $7 million loan guarantee through SIIFC for their 32-megawatt Wicehtowak Solar Project.

“Events like this provide a strong platform for Indigenous businesses to connect, build relationships, and advance meaningful economic opportunities,” George Gordon Developments Vice President of Business Development Josh Montana said.  “We are grateful to the Saskatchewan Indigenous Investment Finance Corporation for their financial support, and to the Government of Saskatchewan for continuing to move reconciliation into action through tangible investments that empower Indigenous communities and businesses.”

Projects such as these are more likely to come to fruition through the connections and dialogue facilitated by events like the IBG.

New to the event last year was an area for Indigenous vendors to market their products.

Koda Promotional, a company selling promotional products, apparel, and business gifts, is another business that has seen the benefits of the IBG firsthand.

“This was our third year participating in the IBG,” Koda Promotional Founder and President Todd Standing said. “As a First Nation-owned and -operated Saskatchewan vendor, we always look forward to this annual gathering. The event positively impacts Saskatchewan’s economy by helping to grow Indigenous participation in the private sector.” Today’s event drew more than 1,100 attendees and featured 153 trade show booths, as well as 13 vendors.

Saskatchewan Uranium will Fuel India’s Energy Security for Next Decade

Today, Premier Scott Moe joined Prime Minister Mark Carney and Prime Minister Modi to witness the signing of an agreement for Saskatchewan uranium to be sold to India. The agreement between Cameco and India’s Department of Atomic Energy commits the nuclear energy giant to supply fuel for use in the country’s growing nuclear fleet.

Premier Scott Moe stands with Cameco President and CEO Tim Gitzel and Indian High Commissioner to Canada Dinesh Patnaik at a signing ceremony for a $2.6 billion agreement between Cameco and India’s Department of Atomic Energy, which will supply Saskatchewan uranium to India over the next nine years.

“We understand Saskatchewan’s potential to supply the world with the fuel it needs to power the economies of tomorrow and it’s great to see India value the energy security we can provide,” Moe said. “This agreement is thanks in no small part to Cameco for their dedication to our uranium industry, and the governments of Saskatchewan, Canada and India for their priority on a productive and mutually beneficial relationship. Today marks a great day for this longstanding partnership and holds a lot of promise for a bright future together.”

With this agreement, Cameco expects to ship $2.6 billion worth of uranium to India over a nine-year term. Today’s agreement replaces a five-year agreement from 2015 and is nearly 10 times the value at the time of announcement in 2015.

Cameco has over 35 years of experience in Saskatchewan’s uranium industry and continues to be a reliable supplier of the critical mineral to countries all over the globe.

“The global demand for secure, carbon-free nuclear power is rising rapidly, and India is at the forefront with ambitious expansion plans for its civil nuclear energy program,” CEO of Cameco Tim Gitzel said. “Cameco will play a pivotal role by providing Saskatchewan-mined uranium to help fuel the energy needs of India’s growing population and industries, as well as further solidify the vital trade relationship between our two countries. We are thankful for the continued advocacy of the Saskatchewan and Canadian governments to foster international trade opportunities that allow us to meet the needs of global customers and bring the benefits home.”

In Saskatchewan, in 2024, the uranium mining sector employed more than 2,300 people and contributed more than $2.5 billion to the provincial GDP. With the ongoing global shift to nuclear power, jurisdictions around the world are continuing to source more uranium from responsible, reliable and geopolitically stable regions like Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan and India Have a Strong Trade Relationship with Over $18 Billion in Exports Since 2007

Premier Scott Moe is leading a mission to India to strengthen trade and promote Saskatchewan as a key player in global food and energy security. During the mission, Premier will also join Prime Minister Mark Carney in New Delhi and Mumbai where the two will work to foster enhanced economic partnerships.

“The province is proud to be the consistent ally and reliable supplier of the food and energy the people of India depend on,” Moe said. “India is one of the province’s largest and most important trading partners and it is vital that we continue to build and strengthen this longstanding relationship. It is only through our international engagement efforts that we will be successful in resolving challenges and creating new opportunities.”

While in India, Moe will speak at the Raisina Dialogue, India’s premier conference on geoeconomics. He will share Saskatchewan’s strengths in energy, mining, agriculture, and critical minerals as well as resiliency and recovery in a time of global economic upheaval. Saskatchewan is encouraged by the federal government’s commitment to redouble efforts to negotiate the Canada-India Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement to allow for Saskatchewan’s agricultural goods to access the Indian market, tariff-free. The successful conclusion of trade negotiations will strengthen trade with India and provide additional opportunities to ensure Saskatchewan remains a key partner in ensuring food and energy security for India’s population of more than 1.4 billion for years to come.

As an export-based economy, trading relationships are crucial to Saskatchewan’s economic prosperity, which is why the province continues to focus its efforts on market diversification. Prioritization of international engagement has proven invaluable, enabling buyers and investors to connect from across the world.

Saskatchewan has had a trade and investment office in New Delhi since 2021. The province has built a network of nine international trade and investment offices to prioritize strengthening existing trade relationships while exploring new markets.

The mission will run from February 28 to March 6, 2026.

Private investment rises to $13.6 billion in 2025

Statistics Canada released new data today showing Saskatchewan ranks first among provinces growth of 12 per cent in private capital investment for 2025.

“Our province continues to see impressive capital investment, because Saskatchewan has what companies want. We have the skilled people, robust incentives, low tax and utility rates, and a stable regulatory environment that supports businesses every step of the way,” Trade and Export Development Minister Warren Kaeding said. “Our Investment Attraction Strategy is driving that momentum. Investors are choosing Saskatchewan time and time again. As more and more investors are learning of the Saskatchewan Advantage, that means more jobs, more economic opportunities and more long‑term growth for communities right here at home.”

Total capital investment in Saskatchewan last year increased by 13.8 per cent to $19.7 billion. This represents the second highest growth rate in Canada.

Today’s results add to a series of strong economic indicators for Saskatchewan. Statistics Canada’s latest GDP numbers indicate that Saskatchewan’s 2024 real GDP reached an all-time high of $83.6 billion, increasing by 3.1 per cent. This ranks Saskatchewan second in the nation for real GDP growth and above the national average of 2.0 per cent.

An infographic of a man in construction safety equipment. The graphic reads "Private Capital Investment. Saskatchewan ranks 1st in Growth Among the Provinces.

Capital investment refers to the expenditures on fixed assets intended to produce goods and services. Fixed assets include structures, machinery and equipment. This is an important economic indicator as it showcases businesses’ optimism about the current and future state of the economy, as well as the ability to earn a return on their investment.

Two years after the launch of the province’s Investment Attraction Strategy, the approach is showing results. The strategy strengthens Saskatchewan’s business environment by improving support for investors, working closely with local and Indigenous partners and using our nine international offices to build global connections. This approach reduces barriers, helps projects move ahead faster and makes Saskatchewan a more attractive place for new investment.

Saskatchewan Welcomes Significant Investment to Expand Mining Industry Capacity

Today, Legislative Secretary Responsible for Trade and Export Development, Jamie Martens joined Sandvik on behalf of Minister Warren Kaeding to break ground on a new mining equipment manufacturing and servicing facility in Saskatoon. The facility will bring mechanical cutting, parts, services and aftermarket support under one roof to drive efficiency in the mining sector across Central and Western Canada.

“Sandvik’s investment will create new jobs and grow the economy while enhancing critical infrastructure needed to support the mining industry,” Trade and Export Development Minister Warren Kaeding said. “Projects like this, along with our government’s efforts to support long-term growth ensures our economy remains strong, safe and secure.”

The facility is expected to be operational later this year and will create approximately 30 new skilled labour positions for mechanical cutting, assembly, service and maintenance of products. This work has historically been done overseas, but will now be offered in Saskatoon, bringing more good jobs home to the people of this province. Sandvik is a multinational engineering and equipment manufacturer operating across 150 countries.

Infographic with the headline “International Investment.” Text states “$51 million investment in a new Saskatchewan mining equipment facility.” A simple icon of a manufacturing worker appears beside the text. The graphic highlights that Sandvik has invested in Saskatchewan.

“Building on the momentum of our recent Sudbury announcement, this facility is about expanding capability and readiness,” Sandvik Mining Vice President of Sales Area Canada Peter Corcoran said. “The Saskatoon facility will strengthen our local presence in a key mining region and ensure we have the capacity, infrastructure and expertise to support our customers well into the future.”

Saskatchewan is home to 27 of the 34 critical minerals that Canada has identified as strategically important for the country and demand for those minerals is expected to increase significantly over the coming decades.

“Our government continues to place priority on driving innovation and creating new economic opportunities in the province,” Kaeding said. “With this investment, Sandvik reinforces Saskatchewan’s competitive and stable business environment that solidifies the province as the best place to do business in Canada.”

The provincial economy continues to see substantial growth. In 2007, the value of Saskatchewan exports was $19.8 billion, which has since climbed to nearly $50 billion on average over the past three years. In 2024, the province’s exports reached 161 countries.

The province continues to lead the nation in private capital investment growth. Attracting new investment and growing our existing businesses continues to be a key priority for our government and these numbers demonstrate our province is the best place to invest in Canada. Securing the Next Decade of Growth – Saskatchewan’s Investment Attraction Strategy and Saskatchewan’s trade and investment website, InvestSK.ca, contain helpful information for potential investors and highlight the province as the best place to do business in Canada.

A delegation from Saskatchewan left for a trade and investment mission to Brazil. The mission is being led by Minister of Trade and Export Development Warren Kaeding and will focus on increasing trade opportunities and furthering established partnerships with the state of Goias.

Graphic with the headline “Strengthening Trade” over a map highlighting Saskatchewan and Brazil, with a pinpoint marking Brazil to indicate a Saskatchewan trade mission taking place there.

“Brazil represents enormous opportunity for Saskatchewan,” Kaeding said. “Not only are they a significant trading partner, but they are also a gateway market to the rest of South America and the Andean region, where we have seen incredible trade growth recently. I look forward to strengthening ties with officials and stakeholders in Brazil, especially in the areas of fertilizers and agriculture.”

Brazil is Saskatchewan’s fourth largest export market. In 2024, exports to Brazil totaled $1.1 billion. In the first nine months of 2025, one of the top destinations for Saskatchewan products in South America was Brazil, where exports totaled $1.3 billion dollars, primarily in potash. Also in 2024, exports to the Andean region increased by 45 per cent. The Andean region includes Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela.

The mission is supported by Saskatchewan’s trade and investment office in Mexico. They are part of the province’s network of nine international offices that facilitate trade and investment opportunities all over the globe. In 2007, the value of Saskatchewan exports was $19.8 billion, which has since climbed to nearly $50 billion per year on average over the past 3 years.

The mission will leave February 22, 2026 and return on the 28th.
