Beyond exchanging single items it can also convey packages of multiple items in a structures layout.<\/p>\n<p>Since early 2008 the next version of NewsML has been available: NewsML-G2. You can obtain more information about this standard <a href=\"\/standards\/newsml-g2\/\">in the NewsML-G2 section<\/a>. However some vendors and users continue to use NewsML 1.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sectionText\">\n<h3 class=\"mzStdText\">Main Features<\/h3>\n<p class=\"mzStdText\">NewsML 1 versions can be applied at all stages in the (electronic) news lifecycle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mzStdText\">Typical use would include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"mzStdText\">in and between editorial systems<\/li>\n<li class=\"mzStdText\">between news agencies and their customers<\/li>\n<li class=\"mzStdText\">between publishers and news aggregators<\/li>\n<li class=\"mzStdText\">and between news service providers and end users.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"mzStdText\">Because it is intended for use in electronic production, delivery and archiving it does not include specific provision for traditional paper-based publishing, though formats intended for this purpose &#8211; such as the News Industry Text Format (<a href=\"\/standards\/nitf\/\">NITF<\/a>)- can be accommodated. Similarly it is not primarily intended for use in editing or creating news content, though it may be used as a basis for systems doing this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mzStdText\">The need for NewsML came from the continuing growth in production, use and re-use of news throughout the world, with rapid expansion of the Internet being a strong driving force.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mzStdText\"><a id=\"specification\"><\/a>Specification<\/h2>\n<p>The IPTC provides a DTD and an XML Schema plus the Functional Specification.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mzStdText\">Download a full <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iptc.org\/std\/NewsML\/IPTC-NewsML_1.2-distrib.zip\">NewsML 1.2 package<\/a> (ZIP-file, ~ 3 MB, updated July 2008). This package contains all documentation papers as well as the specification files &#8211; for NewsML 1.2 only.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mzStdText\"><a id=\"guidelines\"><\/a>Documentation<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"mzStdText\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iptc.org\/std\/NewsML\/1.2\/documentation\/NewsML_1.2-doc-Guidelines_1.01.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NewsML 1.2 Guidelines V 1.1 <\/a>(updated July 2008) a comprehensive documentation for users and implementers.<span class=\"mzStdTextWhite\"> <br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"mzStdText\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iptc.org\/std\/NewsML\/1.2\/documentation\/NewsML_1.2-doc-DTDoverview_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Structural overview<\/a> of the DTD (as PDF): this document provides a tree-like structure of all elements specified by NewsML, ~ 20 pages.<\/span><span class=\"mzStdTextWhite\"> <br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Internally linked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iptc.org\/std\/NewsML\/1.2\/specification\/schema-doc\/NewsML_1.2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">structure documentation<\/a> (updated July 2008) &#8211; derived from the XML-Schema (as HTML).
