It’s this super simple site that just fills your browser with a solid yellow screen. I use it all the time when I’m reading at night – it’s way easier on my eyes than the blinding white of most pages. It’s one of those weird little tools that just works perfectly. Seriously a lifesaver for my late-night deep dives.

It’s hilarious and a great way to gently tease someone. So much fun!

I’ve been using it during video calls to brighten my face when the lighting is bad. It’s also perfect for when I need to trace a drawing or just create a blank space to focus on writing. So much more useful than I expected!

Hi Daniel. I’m not sure what you mean by “Debian’s discriminatory hiring policies.” It’s an all-volunteer open source project. It is not run by a for-profit company and does not employ paid developers for its core distribution.

I’m curious to hear how you came to that conclusion.

Comment on Why Linux Will Never Be Mainstream by Daniel Beatty https://itsjustdj.com/why-linux-will-never-be-mainstream/#comment-5173 Sat, 26 Jul 2025 16:55:48 +0000 https://dj-codes.com/?p=255#comment-5173 I’m no computer dummy. I used Ubuntu for years and even more under the hood than most of their users — after all, I had some Computer Science and web dev education. I had a dual boot Windows/Ubuntu machine. Then later a Windows/Fedora laptop. Problem is every time Windows updated it destroyed the boot sector and made getting into Linux a real PITA. When I got a new laptop, I didn’t want to put Linux on it until it was paid off, then later out of laziness. So, I went 10 or so years without a Linux machine.

Finally, I had an HP laptop that just would not update Win10 and I decided it was time to get another laptop. After a year or so, I decide to put Linux on the old HP. Debian this time, because of Ububntu’s BS. Then I hear tell of Debian’s discriminatory hiring policies to be “more inclusive.” I decided, if I can change beer brands because of this woke crap, I can go with another distro for the same reasons. Try Arch. Total frustration. Go with Manjaro. Somewhat better, but still somewhat frustrating. Thinking about Nix. Steep learning curve with weirdly explained tutorial.

The point is digging through the voluminous online info to find what will actually help me. Reading things and saying what the hell is such and such and falling down another rabbit hole to understand. Multiple rabbit holes that really just distract from the main mission and lead to multiple missteps in finding a solution. Documentation and well-meaning community members providing answers that just lead to more and more questions. Reading simple instructions that just don’t work for one reason or another.

Yeah, though no computer expert, I’m not unfamiliar either and if I experience this level of frustration, ain’t no casual computer user ever, ever gonna do much of that.

Hi Aidan,

Yup. If it has an Intel chip and it’s made after 2006 (?), it runs ME. However, there’s a way to partially disable it by running a Python script: https://github.com/mrsensey/me_cleaner. IME still runs during boot, but shuts off during normal operation. I think that’s about as free from IME as you can get.

Thank you.

Imagine if your home has all the connected things; thermostat, security cameras, water heater, air conditioner, refrigerator, oven, garage door opener. What if they get hacked? Or what if they just simply go on the fritz and you can’t use them? I’m no Luddite by any means. I drive a Tesla, for Pete’s sake. I have a smartphone, several laptops, and I even run a web server from my home. For all those connected shenanigans, I’ve set up extremely good security. But I’m no fool and I know there’s always the potential for hackers to sneak in somehow. […]
