It’s always a big aha moment when I show students that the seemingly solved problem of projecting the world as a globe onto a flat surface is an impossible task. For me, it’s a very good starting point for thinking about how quantification, mathematical models, images and visualisation in general can help us understand the world, but can also cause the most serious problems we have as society. https://jonasparnow.com/about/ Tue, 15 Nov 2022 11:44:35 +0000 https://jonasparnow.com/about/ Hey hey, I’m Jonas Parnow [pʰaʁno:], a Berlin-based freelance designer with a focus on interface design and data visualisation, and a Metalab(at)Harvard affiliate. I have worked in commercial, artistic, scientific and journalistic contexts, but nowadays I mainly offer my expertise in non-commercial projects. Many of these projects consist of data analysis, concept, design, visualisation, and implementation. I am comfortable with some programming languages1, web technologies2, and a good range of graphic applications. With my background at the intersection of data visualisation and interface design, I have been involved in the concept, ideation and realisation of singular graphics to highly interactive, embedded visualsation systems. Besides, I regularly teach data journalism and information design at the TU Dortmund and FH Potsdam. I’m also an affilitate at Metalab(at)Harvard. In non-Corona times, I co-organise the Data Visualisation Meetup in Berlin. It is a commonly used tool for reshaping data before visualising it. In this guide, I will show the main functionalities in a beginner’s friendly way. You will learn how to inspect the data, cluster columns, merge datasets and export them in a new format. Why OpenRefine Commonly, OpenRefine is used to »refine« or »wrangle« data tables. Non-expert tips for private email usage https://jonasparnow.com/mail/ Sat, 16 May 2020 10:18:52 +0000 https://jonasparnow.com/mail/ I’m no security or privacy expert, and similarly, you don’t have to be one to follow these steps. These tips concern your general mail setup and things to consider when signing up for services on the internet with your mail address. Since your mail address might be the second-best identifier behind your phone number, you really want to consider some things to protect it. tl;dr In short, you really should pay your mail service provider so that it’s not you and your data which is being sold. Wed, 11 Mar 2020 11:46:31 +0100 Jonas Parnow is a designer of visualisations, interested in projects related to the climate crisis, post-digital media and technological justice. Wed, 11 Mar 2020 11:46:31 +0100 Perspective I work as a self-employed designer, programmer and teacher in Berlin, interested in transforming data and information into visual structures while keeping a broad understanding of what a visualisation can be. I believe in a critical and theory-informed approach to data visualisation and design in general. I prefer to work with non-profit organisations, foundations, universities, journalists, and activists with open-source licenses.
