JumboHack: Tufts' Loveliest Hackathon

When: February 17th through February 18th, 2024
Where: Tufts' Joyce Cummings Center, Somerville, MA
Who: Hackers, designers, and lovers in the Greater Boston area

There’s something in the air…you can feel it in your heart…and it’s not love, it’s Tufts’ first hackathon in five years! Have you ever wondered what a hackathon is? Have you ever seen a cool hackathon you wanted to go to and it was just too far away? Sounds like you might be our type...

Join us February 17th to 18th in the Joyce Cummings Center to learn new technologies, build exciting projects, and meet other cool people! At JumboHack, you’ll work on a technical project over the course of one or two days and explore the many events happening throughout the hackathon. Attend workshops from Tufts clubs such as BSCS, EWB, CIVIC, and AI Society. And, listen to presentations from professionals in the tech industry, speaking about DEI, generative AI, career building, and more. Food will be provided to keep you hacking!

Project Tracks

We have a few project tracks to guide your ideas and help make something awesome.

Racial Justice Advocacy: This track is for projects that aim to promote racial equity and combat racism in various domains such as health, education, criminal justice, and media. You can use data analysis, machine learning, web development, or any other tools to create solutions that address the challenges and opportunities of racial justice advocacy.

Education: This track is for projects that aim to improve the quality and accessibility of education for learners of all ages and backgrounds. You can use gamification, VR/AR, AI, or any other tools to create solutions that enhance the learning experience, outcomes, and opportunities of education.

You can use social media, data visualization, NLP, or any other tools to create solutions that inform, persuade, or mobilize people on political issues and causes.

You can use any tools or technologies to create solutions that address any problem or need that you are passionate about. Here's a little inspo: food insecurity, youth/homeless/elderly advocacy, LGBT advocacy, accessibility, connecting with community.

Requirements

What to Build

Anything that your heart desires! JumboHack is an excellent opportunity to tackle a social issue, learn a new language, or explore a new type of technology. Whether you create a website, a chat server, an automation script, or something else, we’re excited to see what you bring to the table. If you’re a designer, you’re welcome to submit graphic designs and wireframes for the application of your dreams

What to Submit

Feel free to submit all work associated with your project: code, documentation, design files, and more. With every submission, we require that you submit a README file, with the following information:

  1. The Project: Include your team name, and 2 to 3 sentences describing the goal of your project. What were your goals, and what did you accomplish over the weekend?

  2. The Team: Include the names of all your team members. For each, describe in a few words how they contributed to the project!

  3. Acknowledgements: If your project uses major pieces of code from other sources— external libraries, other hackers, and ChatGPT— please cite them here! We’d love to give credit where credit’s due.

  4. Optional Reflection: Because we love learning, tell us about what you learned this weekend!

    1. What motivated your team to choose this project? Are there bigger ideas or features for the project that you’d want to implement in the future?

    2. Tell us about a tricky bug, a design challenge, or that you encountered. How did your team tackle it together?

    3. Tell us about one fun or interesting experience that you had with other hackers! Did you get coffee with new friends? Did you attend a workshop that inspired you? Did you ask out your hackathon crush?
