The story behind our bottles is the story of three friends who love life, adventure and sports of all kinds. After a childhood spent together, most often barefoot, exploring the beaches and foothills on the coasts of Mauritius, this trio grew up to find themselves in three very different industries. 

Deciding to then join together to make some waves in an altogether new industry felt like a fun challenge! So that’s how a tech engineer, an accountant and an epicurean ended up starting a premium craft beverages company. 

The perfect blend

With three different personalities and a truly diverse set of skills between them, each founder plays a unique, important part in making the business a success. 

A leader in the tech industry, Dominique is the natural KapTen of Lekipaz – giving oversight to the whole operation. Nicolas is our KapTen of Brocode. An accountant by profession, he is our resident bean counter and big thinker, while Johan gives oversight to everything on the ground as General Manager. The KapTen of the Brewery, he is an epicurean who brings with him a wealth of knowledge of fine foods and drinks. 

All aboard!

Armed with an ambitious goal and an insatiable appetite for knowledge, the trio quickly set out to learn all they could about the craft of making exceptional drinks. To ensure that they had the very best on board, they enlisted the help of a sorbet master, a chemist, and two French Master Brewers along the way.

First, they aimed to create non-alcoholic sparkling beverages that not only tantalized the taste buds but also promoted a healthier lifestyle. Together, they blended local ingredients in innovative ways. They taste tested hundreds of combinations, flavours and production techniques. All the while – committed to flavour that didn’t compromise on quality or health. The result: KapTen Sodas.

“We’re passionate about creating and crafting drinks that aren’t loaded with sugar, don’t have any weird chemicals, and, most importantly, taste amazing,” says Johan.

But they didn’t stop there; they also ventured into the world of premium craft beer with KapIO. Their equally ambitious goal: to lead the pack in this tightly contested category. 

It’s a win-win!

While others merely chat about craft, these friends embody it. Their brewery isn’t just a place of work; it’s a sanctuary of joy, a repository of cherished memories from their childhood adventures, and a reflection of their island’s essence, in every sip.

Perhaps this is just what happens when you combine three childhood friends, the love of sports and adventure, and a mission to revolutionise the drinks industry!

The year 2019 marked a significant turning point for our little company – it’s when not one but two French Master Brewers joined our ranks…

Just like the imported hops and yeast they expertly craft together under the Mauritian sky – Isabelle and Claude are themselves an inimitable blend, bringing with them an innovative effervescence and a sharp eye for the exceptional.  

Claude Thiery has been perfecting the art of brewing for almost 40 years. 

After working in both industrial and artisanal breweries, he created an innovative microbrewery – one of the first fully organic breweries in France using low-temperature and isobaric beer fermentation. 

Today, Claude acts as our brewery consultant and has served as a judge in several of the biggest beer competitions – including CGA, Lyon International Competition, and Amphore.

Isabelle Thiery has been working in the brewery industry for a little over 30 years – since 1991. She is the Director of Brew3A, a laboratory specialized in beer analysis, and is also a beer sommelier certified by Dormens. 

All of their hard-won experience has been distilled into our humble offering of KapIO Craft Beers. While our line-up is small, our taste profiles pack a serious punch…
