The Solution: Data-Driven Urban Planning with ClimaGre

ClimaGre aims to revolutionize urban planning in the Grenoble-Alpes Métropole region by providing:

1. Detection and Analysis: Tools to detect UHIs through advanced data analysis, revealing temperature variations, land cover types, and population vulnerabilities.
2. Planning and Simulation: Scenario-based simulations to evaluate and optimize urban transformations, such as implementing green spaces, cool roofs, and water bodies.
3. Evaluation of Impact: A 3D Digital Twin showcasing Grenoble’s present and future, enabling urban planners to visualize the positive effects of climate resilience strategies over time.

With ClimaGre, planners can make evidence-based decisions to enhance urban resilience, mitigate UHI effects, and create a sustainable urban environment for current and future generations.

How ClimaGre Works: The Role of Data Integration and Visualization

The success of ClimaGre lies in its ability to integrate and visualize diverse data sources. Powered by Kentyou’s innovative solutions, the project will leverage:

• The Data Hub Platform: Built on the open-source Eclipse sensiNact framework, Kentyou’s Data Hub collects, cleans, and unifies data from various sources such as sensors, satellite images, historical records, and citizen applications. This horizontal platform ensures seamless data accessibility and meaningful correlations.
• Kentyou Eye: A dynamic hypervisor tool offering interactive visualizations and customizable dashboards. It aggregates geospatial information, historical data, and real-time inputs into actionable insights. Through advanced simulations and forecasts, Kentyou Eye enables stakeholders to anticipate the effects of urban design decisions and evaluate mitigation strategies.

By integrating data such as orthophotography, LiDAR, cadastral information, and satellite imagery, ClimaGre will generate interactive maps, 3D models, and vulnerability assessments. The result is a Digital Twin of the Grenoble GrandAlpe district—a powerful tool for both technical experts and the general public to understand and combat UHIs.

Enhancing Data Access and Decision Support for AURORAL Pilots

One of the critical needs for the AURORAL project is a robust data visualization solution for its various pilots, which span sectors such as smart energy, health, mobility, and tourism. Kentyou Eye, our AI-powered hypervisor, stands out as a perfect match for this requirement. More than just a visualization tool, Kentyou Eye will provide pilots with access to advanced AI-based forecasts and decision support, allowing Smart Communities to better analyze, monitor, and act on their data in real-time.

Kentyou Eye is designed to empower users to gain meaningful insights from complex datasets, offering tailored dashboards and metrics for specific community needs. Through this solution, AURORAL pilots will be able to monitor key metrics, predict trends, and optimize their decision-making processes—all from a user-friendly interface. This enhanced decision-making capability is crucial for rural areas that may face limited resources but aim to achieve the same level of technological innovation seen in urban centers.

Seamless Integration with AURORAL Middleware Through Eclipse sensiNact

Kentyou’s success in this project will be driven by our use of the Eclipse sensiNact platform, an open-source modular and extensible middleware. Eclipse sensiNact enables seamless data exchange across different devices and systems, making it an ideal candidate for integration with AURORAL’s existing middleware. By developing Web of Things (WoT) adapters for sensiNact, Kentyou will ensure that the data ecosystem within the AURORAL platform is enriched and accessible to a wide range of smart devices and applications.

This integration will unlock new data sources and services for AURORAL pilots, allowing them to access and provide data with ease. By supporting AURORAL’s peer-to-peer data exchange model, we ensure that data stays under the control of each participating community, preserving privacy while enabling seamless data collaboration. With the development of these Web of Things connectors, Kentyou will expand the functionality of the AURORAL ecosystem, empowering Smart Communities with cutting-edge interoperability and data access solutions.

Addressing the Challenge of Smart Intersections

Urban intersections are pivotal in managing city traffic and ensuring road safety. The significance of this challenge cannot be overstated: nearly half of all road accidents in Europe occur at intersections, many resulting in severe injuries or fatalities. Effective management of these intersections not only saves lives but also improves the flow of traffic, reduces congestion, and minimizes environmental impact.

At Kentyou, we have long recognized the critical importance of this issue. Our dedication to enhancing urban mobility and safety has been demonstrated through several other projects and initiatives. Our past projects, such as FedIntersect and Decenter, have laid the groundwork for innovative smart intersection management. More recently, our ongoing AI4Life project has been successfully focusing on deploying intersection management solutions in Istanbul. This award-winning initiative focuses on utilizing AI to optimize traffic flow and enhance safety measures.

Smart intersections indeed represent a complex challenge that requires a multifaceted approach, leveraging IoT, Edge, and Cloud solutions. Effective management necessitates the interoperability of various devices and systems, alongside advanced AI capabilities to process and analyse vast amounts of data in real time. These technologies collectively enable precise monitoring, prediction, and decision-making, which are essential for improving traffic flow and safety.

Innovation and Partnership for smarter intersections in Jena

Building on our commitment to smart intersections, the ICOS project represents a significant opportunity to address these challenges with cutting-edge solutions. The ICOS project, funded by the European Commission, aims to develop a meta-operating system that seamlessly integrates diverse devices, optimizes service execution, ensures robust security, and fosters an open, adaptable, data-driven environment.

This initiative provided an excellent opportunity for collaboration with key partners and the innovative city of Jena. Together, we aim to leverage our combined expertise and resources to tackle the complex issues of intersection management and urban mobility.

The ICOSmart project will integrate several innovative solutions. Jena’s investment in digitalizing its public services has made it a model city for Smart City and 5G projects. The city has installed a wide array of sensors to connect previously isolated systems such as buses, trams, traffic lights, electrical substations, and environmental sensors. This extensive sensor network provides a robust infrastructure for the ICOSmart project.

DataInMotion utilizes Eclipse sensiNact as a distributed data broker, with Jena running a central instance for centralized access to collected data. IoT devices that cannot directly communicate via protocols like MQTT or LoRaWAN are supported by edge devices running small instances of the broker. Data is collected from traffic cameras, traffic light controllers, intersection signal data, and public transportation units. These setups allow each instance of the broker to be part of the testbed, receiving regular updates.

Based on this infrastructure, Kentyou will deploy its Data Hub and Kentyou Eye urban data hypervisor (both based on top of the open-source Eclipse sensiNact platform) to provide monitoring, prediction, and impact assessment capabilities through an intuitive user interface. This integration will allow us to create a sophisticated, multi-layered solution to improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and support data-driven decision-making in Jena, driving the city towards a smarter, more connected future.

Real-time monitoring for safer intersections

During the ICOSmart project, we will focus on developing and implementing several key components, structured into four main layers:

• Smart Intersection Testbed: Utilizing Jena’s smart city infrastructure, we will establish a comprehensive test environment.
• Kentyou Data Hub Layer: This layer will gather, unify, and prepare data for processing, integrating most ICOS components.
• Kentyou AI Layer: Data processing, correlation, analysis, prediction, and simulations will occur here, incorporating ICOS’s data management components.
• Kentyou Eye Layer: The user interaction layer featuring data visualization, decision-making support, and impact monitoring tools.

To ensure the effectiveness of our solution, ICOSmart will focus on two main case scenarios:

• Real-Time Intersection Monitoring: Enhancing situational awareness of traffic and mobility, providing forecasts, and recommending actions for efficient traffic management.
• Safety Enhancement: Increasing safety for pedestrians and drivers by detecting potentially dangerous situations in a timely manner.

These scenarios are expected to have a substantial impact on urban mobility and safety. By improving traffic flow and reducing accidents, the ICOSmart project aims to make Jena a safer, smarter, and more connected city. The insights and technologies developed through this project will serve as a model for cities across Europe and beyond, driving the broader goal of building smarter and more sustainable urban environments.

Traditional development processes often involve extensive coding, configuration, and customization, which can be time-consuming and require specialized expertise. This complexity can hinder innovation and slow down the implementation of smart city initiatives, as developers spend substantial time and resources on integrating disparate systems and ensuring compatibility.

Kentyou’s VOFactory project aims to tackle these challenges head-on. By focusing on improving interoperability and simplifying the development process, we are paving the way for more cohesive and efficient smart city solutions. These improvements are crucial for enabling smart cities to harness the full potential of IoT technologies, ultimately enhancing urban living and resource management.

VOFactory Project: A Strategic Approach Aligned with NEPHELE

The VOFactory project is designed to create a process and set of tools to build a Virtual Object (VO) Factory, which will accelerate the development of Virtual Objects within NEPHELE and enhance interoperability with additional IoT protocols. Our approach involves several key components:

• Ensuring Platform Compatibility: We will ensure compatibility between Kentyou’s open-source Eclipse sensiNact data platform and NEPHELE’s VOStack. This integration will extend the interoperability capabilities of both platforms, making NEPHELE’s VOStack compatible with a range of protocols such as OGC SensorThings, enOcean, LORA, and Matter.

• Developing a Low-Code VO Factory: To streamline the creation of Virtual Objects, we will develop a low-code VO Factory that automates the process based on skeletons for various existing IoT protocols. This will significantly reduce the time and effort required for development.

• Creating a User-Friendly Interface: We will also develop a user-friendly interface to monitor, manage, and compose virtual objects. This tool will simplify the process for developers, making it easier to visualize and manage the status of the VOStack infrastructure.

Our approach aligns perfectly with the NEPHELE project’s goals of efficient, reliable, and secure orchestration of hyper-distributed applications across a programmable infrastructure. By leveraging virtualization of IoT devices and supporting openness and interoperability, we contribute to NEPHELE’s vision of a seamless Cloud-to-Edge-to-IoT continuum.

Faster and more efficient development of smart city applications

The VOFactory project promises numerous future benefits, particularly in the context of smart cities. By simplifying the development and integration of IoT solutions, we will enable faster deployment of smart city applications, leading to improved urban services and better quality of life for citizens. The enhanced interoperability will allow different IoT systems to work together more effectively, facilitating a more connected and responsive urban environment.

Kentyou’s expertise and assets are crucial to the success of this project. Our Eclipse sensiNact platform is a multi-standard open-source solution that already addresses many interoperability challenges. Coupled with our team of experts in IoT, data analytics, AI, and smart city applications, we are well-positioned to drive the VOFactory project forward. Funded by EIT Urban Mobility, this project addresses critical urban challenges by targeting intersections, which are key bottlenecks in city infrastructure and hotspots for traffic accidents.

The Urgent Need of Addressing Traffic Congestion and Pollution in Urban Areas

Cities are responsible for approximately 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with road transportation contributing a quarter of these emissions. Traffic congestion alone costs Europe €110 billion annually, exacerbating air pollution-related health issues and resulting in several hundred billion euros in economic costs. This congestion not only leads to wasted time and productivity losses but also contributes to severe air pollution, which in turn causes numerous health problems and inflates healthcare costs by several hundred billion euros annually.

Beyond the economic and environmental toll, urban traffic poses a grave risk to public safety. Each year, 20,000 people lose their lives in road accidents across Europe, with 40% of these fatalities occurring in city environments and 50% at intersections. These figures underscore the critical need for smarter, safer intersection management systems.

The AI4LIFE project aims to address these multifaceted challenges by developing an integrated, AI-based smart intersection management system. This system is designed to reduce congestion, thereby cutting greenhouse gas emissions and reclaiming hours otherwise lost in traffic. By optimizing traffic flow and reducing stop-and-go driving conditions, AI4LIFE will help lower urban pollution levels, contributing to cleaner air and healthier cities.

AI4LIFE: Scaling Up for Urban Traffic Solutions

The AI4LIFE project builds on Kentyou’s successful collaboration with Columbia University, where an initial proof of concept focused on a single intersection. This research demonstrated the potential of AI-driven intersection management and earned recognition as a winner in IDC Government Insight’s 2023 Smart Cities North America Awards in the transportation category.

Now, AI4LIFE aims to scale this concept significantly by piloting the technology in two major cities: Istanbul, Turkey, and Santander, Spain. These pilots will involve more than 70 intersections and integrate over 1,000 diverse data sources, including cameras, sensors, mobile apps, and open-data platforms. This extensive data integration will leverage our Eclipse sensiNact platformand its ability to harmonize heterogeneous data sources.

Also central to the project’s success is the Kentyou Eye hypervisor, a cutting-edge solution that gathers insights from the multitude of integrated data sources. The Kentyou Eye hypervisor provides comprehensive analytics visualization and decision support capabilities, enabling city planners and traffic managers to make informed, real-time decisions. By harnessing the power of advanced AI and machine learning algorithms, the system can predict traffic patterns, optimize signal timings, and proactively address potential safety hazards, thereby improving traffic flow and reducing accident risks.

These large-scale pilots will serve as critical demonstrations of the AI4LIFE system’s capabilities. The insights gained from these pilots will be invaluable in refining the technology and developing robust commercial strategies for widespread adoption.

Collaboration for a Smarter, Safer Future

The AI4LIFE project unites the expertise of two complementary enterprises: ISBAK and Kentyou and of the research teams of the University of Cantabria.

ISBAK, the municipal company of Istanbul, will contribute its cutting-edge Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure and an innovative adaptive signalized intersection management system. Kentyou, an award-winning startup known for its pioneering work in AI-driven data platforms, will offer its interoperable data solutions and visualization and decision-making support tools.

The collaborative effort in the two pilot cities will showcase the effectiveness of the integrated solutions in diverse urban environments, laying the groundwork for scaling the technology across Europe and beyond.

This year, we are delighted to share our insights into this exciting development at EclipseCon 2023. On Thursday, October 19th, from 14:45 to 15:20, Thomas Calmant our lead Software Architect will chair a session titled “Supporting Open Standards: Building an OGC SensorThings API for Eclipse sensiNact.“

Our talk will showcase how the modular architecture of Eclipse sensiNact enables the swift development and integration of the OGC SensorThings API. Attendees will gain a deep understanding of the architectural principles behind Eclipse sensiNact, including its “sensing” model and its key components: Things, Sensors, and Observations.

Moreover, we will explore the technical implementation details, highlighting the seamless integration of REST and MQTT access to sensor data. The objective of this session is simple yet vital: to introduce the Eclipse sensiNact project and demonstrate how we have constructed new modules to provide its model to clients using the OGC SensorThings standard API.
