In Galibi, language friendly practices are being developed to revive and maintain the Kali’na language of the St. Antoniusschool students. For instance, teachers work with their students on mindmaps, using Kali’na and the school language, Dutch.

Later on in the year, Canadian schools celebrate Orange Shirt Day. This day commemorates the indigenous communities that were affected by residential schools, the loss of cultures, communities, history, land, and languages. Orange Shirt Day commits to the truth that every child matters. Glendale Secondary School devised a classroom activity that celebrates this day in a language friendly way.

In her work she inspires her colleagues through language policy, collaboration, workshops and creative language friendly ideas.

Door een interactieve presentatie van het Taalvriendelijke School-team, een verdiepende lezing van hoogleraar Ağırdağ, en een afsluitende paneldiscussie met beleidsmakers van de eerste Taalvriendelijke scholen in Amsterdam, werden de deelnemers geïnspireerd om zelf na te denken over mogelijke antwoorden op deze vraag. 

Waarom zou je als schoolbestuur sturen op meertaligheid? Onderzoek laatzien dat leerlingen beter presteren en zich sociaal-emotioneel beter ontwikkelen in een leeromgeving waarin ze hun thuistalen kunnen benutten in plaats van moeten onderdrukken. Taalvriendelijk onderwijs betekent dat de thuistalen gepland een plek krijgen binnen de school en in de les. Dit zorgt ervoor dat leerlingen al hun talenkennis kunnen inzetten in hun leerproces. Zowel onderzoek als ervaring hebben ons geleerd dat de taalvriendelijke aanpak effectief is als het schoolbreed gedragen wordt. Schoolbesturen hebben hierin een sturende, inspirerende en verbindende functie. 

Gastspreker: Prof. Dr. Orhan Ağırdağ 

Hoogleraar pedagogische wetenschappen Orhan Ağırdağ bracht als gastspreker het wetenschappelijke perspectief op meertaligheid naar voren. Eentalig onderwijs “bespaart moeite en energie” bij de leerkracht, maar meertaligheid biedt veel voordelen voor leerlingen, zoals verbeterde cognitieve vaardigheden en sociaal-emotionele ontwikkeling, maar ook voor de maatschappij in het algemeen. “Onwetendheid is duurder dan onderwijs.” Hij voegt daaraan toe dat de kostprijs op lange termijn van eentalig onderwijs hoger ligt dan die van meertalig onderwijs. Meertaligheid loont dus, volgens professor Ağırdağ. 

Maar hoe stuur je op meertaligheid als school? Professor Ağırdağ benadrukt dat een taalvriendelijke aanpak geen laissez-faire beleid betekent: het werkt alleen met door te plannen en met duidelijke afspraken. Kinderen worden aangemoedigd om hun thuistaal te gebruiken, op duidelijke momenten. De schooltaal blijft nog steeds de voornaamste taal in instructie. Ieder kind en iedere klas heeft andere vaardigheden en behoeften, dat moet worden gereflecteerd in het taalbeleid. 

Hoe zorg je voor een duurzaam taalbeleid op school? Een schoolbreed draagvlak voor het inzetten van meertaligheid wordt door zowel de Taalvriendelijke School als professor Ağırdağ gezien als de belangrijkste voorwaarde. Als schoolbestuur moet je al het personeel meekrijgen: docenten en leerkrachten moeten het nut ervan inzien, kansen krijgen om zich te professionaliseren, en materialen en methodiek worden aangereikt. Aanwezige bestuurder en beleidsmakers ontvingen een Routekaart voor taalvriendelijk onderwijs, specifiek ontwikkeld voor hen.

In gesprek met beleidsmakers van Taalvriendelijke Scholen 

Hoe werkt Taalvriendelijkheid in de praktijk? Petra van der Geest, Dieneke Blikslager en Liza Huizer, drie beleidsmakers van ervaren Taalvriendelijke Scholen waren uitgenodigd om in een paneldiscussie antwoord te geven op die vraag. Bilal Majdoubi, directeur van Islamitische Basisschool El Kadisia, had nog niet eerder gehoord van de Taalvriendelijke School en was daarom de uitgelezen persoon om scherpe vragen te stellen en de discussie te leiden. 

“Elke docent is een taaldocent,” zegt Petra van der Geest, hoofd van de NT2-sectie van DENISE. Ze legt uit dat meertaligheid niet alleen een rol speelt in taallessen, maar in de hele school, dus ook in de rekenles. Hoe test je de rekenkundige voorkennis van een leerling die de Nederlandse taal nog niet (goed) beheerst? Juist, door een meertalige aanpak! De scholen zijn actief bezig met de professionalisering van hun personeel op het gebied van taaldocentschap, een belangrijke stap in het verduurzamen van het taalbeleid. 

Dieneke Blikslager, adjunct op de St. Janschool, bevestigt de wetenschappelijke constateringen over de positieve effecten van meertaligheid. Kinderen voelen zich meer erkend, gezien en gehoord. Bovendien wordt hun kennis beter geactiveerd. Directeur van de St.Janschool, Liza Huizer voegt toe dat ook ouders het gevoel hebben dat hun taal en culturele achtergrond ertoe doet. Kinderen en ouders voelen zich meer betrokken bij de school en het leerproces. Niet alleen op sociaal-emotioneel en cultureel vlak merken de scholen voordelen, maar ook op cognitief niveau. “Hoe beter je de thuistaal beheerst, hoe beter je een andere taal leert,” aldus Petra van der Geest. 

Een praktische tip om mee de school in te nemen

Een tip die werd meegegeven voor scholen die meertaligheid willen opnemen in hun taalbeleid: maak talen zichtbaar. Laat in de lokalen en op de gangen zien dat de thuistalen van de leerlingen erkend en geaccepteerd worden. Dit maakt al een wereld van verschil. 

Aanbod 2025 – Taalvriendelijke School Amsterdam 

De Taalvriendelijke School Amsterdam heeft een inspirerend aanbod voor scholen die taalvriendelijk(er) willen worden, gesteund door de Gemeente Amsterdam. Zowel voor scholen die nog niet gecertificeerd zijn als scholen die het label al dragen. Deze inspiratiesessie voor beleidsmakers over meertaligheid was één van de mogelijkheden. To mark the 25th anniversary of Mother Language Day and the 5th Anniversary of the Language Friendly School, the Rutu Foundation invites you (teacher, student, parent, child, teenager, sibling, everyone!) to participate in a month-long campaign titled “Give a forest story” The campaign will run from February 21st, International Mother Language Day, to March 21st, a date that unites both the International Day of Forests and the date of Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Our goal is to collect 100 stories about forests from around the world for children in as many languages as possible, all accompanied by translations to ensure they reach children globally. This initiative encourages both children and adults to exercise their creativity, explore their connection to forests, understand different cultural perspectives on nature, and share their stories with others while also enjoying tales from peers across the globe. With this campaign, we want to raise awareness about the well-being of children and young people, especially students who speak a language other than the school language. The climate crisis, social media addiction, and discrimination based on language, dialect, or accent—our children are growing up in challenging times. So let’s support them with a story. 

How can I participate?

Anyone can donate a story—a maximum of 500 words, in your preferred language, for children, about the forest – any forest, here. They can be old folk tales that you give a new twist to or something that happened to you in a forest. You can be as creative as you like. On March 21st, we will close the campaign by releasing a selection of stories and providing access to all submitted stories. We will also encourage you to take on one final activity: forest walks! 

The power of stories

Stories play a very important role in children’s brain development of social skills and language learning. Neuroscientists have found that when children hear stories, their brains light up in ways that go beyond language processing. Descriptive words can activate sensory areas, making them feel as if they are smelling, touching, or experiencing what’s being described. Reading stories also helps children understand emotions and relationships. Following a character’s journey, they practice imagining other people’s thoughts and feelings. This strengthens their ability to empathize and connect with others in real life. Research also suggests that children who read often better understand emotions and navigate social situations. Shared storytelling encourages conversations, curiosity, and deeper thinking.

Storytelling also helps develop creativity. It reflects the storyteller’s vision, what stands out to them, and what message they want to share. This process encourages children to explore ideas, express themselves, and invent their narratives.

So, what if we used stories to tackle some of the most pressing issues today, that deeply affect children’s futures?

Why forest stories?

At the Rutu Foundation, we work with children worldwide through the Language Friendly School and the Indigenous-led Education Network. Through our work, we have developed a deep understanding of the need for and the great benefits of children accessing education that respects their cultural identity including their languages. Both in the global north and the global south, this right is systematically violated, causing children to struggle to adapt to new countries or lose their cultural identity. In schools where the use of mother tongues is prohibited or punished, students have more feelings of shame or insecurity and perform worse on numeracy and reading tests. For Indigenous children, not being taught in their language has detrimental effects not only in communities but also on the environment, as Indigenous languages are inseparable from their knowledge systems, rich in environmental knowledge that makes them the world’s best conservationists.

Forests are the world’s most critical ecosystems that can be found in every single continent and are also under threat. Languages, cultures, and knowledge are deeply interconnected, forming what is known as biocultural diversity. Language serves as a vessel for transmitting traditional knowledge, including ecological and environmental understanding, from generation to generation. This knowledge, often developed over centuries, allows communities—especially Indigenous Peoples and local groups—to live sustainably within their specific environments. Cultural diversity is reflected in the thousands of languages spoken worldwide, many of which encode unique ways of understanding and interacting with nature. However, as languages disappear due to colonization, globalization, and socio-economic pressures, the traditional ecological knowledge they hold also vanishes. This loss threatens not only cultural heritage but also biodiversity. As a result, preserving languages is not just about preserving cultural identity—it is also needed to protect ecosystems and biodiversity.

Our call to action: give a forest story! 

By writing stories about forests in a wide range of languages, each reflecting unique cultures and perspectives, we can engage children in ways that facts and figures alone cannot. So, what’s your forest story? Whether it’s a childhood memory, a retelling of a folktale, or an entirely new adventure, we invite you to add your voice to this growing collection. We zijn gestart! De Taalvriendelijke School Amsterdam is officieel van start. Tijdens de online kick-off vertelden kinderen van de Taalvriendelijke St. Janschool, ouders, leerkrachten en een beleidsmaker waarom je school in Amsterdam taalvriendelijk zou moeten worden. Hierboven kun je de kick-off terugkijken.

During the Language Friendly School Conference, we announced 6 Language Friendly School Ambassadors. These individuals, in particular, tirelessly and with great impact, dedicate themselves to promoting multilingualism in the field of education.

Podcast featuring LFS Ambassador

Dr. Eowyn Crisfield is one of the new Language Friendly School Ambassadors! With her expertise in bilingualism and education, she supports and trains schools and governments in the domain of education. In the podcast Primary Futures she is interviewed and talks about what is needed for multilingual learners in terms of perspective, expertise and classroom practice. She puts a special spotlight on Kensington Primary, the Language Friendly School in London. 

Kensington Primary is “an example of what schools can do when they have the will to support students who are multilingual in very, very different ways. Everything, from the food in the cafetaria, to their physical education program, through to their approaches to reading is all absolutely connected to the children who are in their school, who are by and large learning English as an additional language. […] They have absolutely designed their curriculum to fit their kids rather than trying to make their kids fit the curriculum.”

In this episode she also talks about her work with the Jersey government in creating a multilingual policy that is Island-wide and for every school. Due to this policy change there are now Multilingual Leads in every school. Three of these Multilingual Leads are now Language Friendly School Coordinators as well, because Plat Douet, Janvrin School, and Trinity School are Language Friendly Schools. We celebrate her because her work with schools in several parts of the world has led to many more Language Friendly Schools!

School Board Proud of LFS Ambassador

One of the new Language Friendly School Ambassadors, Dieneke Blikslager, is being celebrated. ASKO schools is the school board of St. Janschool, where she is the vice-principal. ASKO congratulates her in this announcement. From the very beginning, Dieneke has been enthusiastic about the idea of the Language-Friendly School. Her school became the first Language-Friendly School in 2019. Beyond her own school, she continues to spread this further. The phrase ‘a Language Friendly sauce’ has now become one of Dieneke’s signature sayings.
