They become more open to justifying the cost of strategically adding more light. I know these posts take time to prepare. (I’ve certainly learned that with my YouTube channel!) So, thank you! I’m looking forward to Find the Fixtures!

As always – nicely done and simply explained. I work in a different corner of the lighting world, but every column of yours that I read is another joyful discovery. Thanks for your work!

With onset of Fall and our shorter days, we are pulled to make the home cozier, so this timely as well.

Thanks for the comment! Glad you have found a clever way to easily control your lamps and to make your living spaces more comfortable! Sounds like you got to the same conclusion much faster than I did. 🙂

Comment on LIVING ROOMS: Pick the Places 2 by genesplitter https://languageoflight.blog/2025/08/22/living-rooms-pick-the-places-2/comment-page-1/#comment-2147 Fri, 22 Aug 2025 20:14:22 +0000 http://languageoflight.blog/?p=6420#comment-2147 Just wanted to thank you for your your gift of knowledge. I’ve appreciated good lighting at an unconscious level even as a young kid. I’m a DIY homeowner and years ago I installed dozens of wafer lights into our very dark living room. Of course I first researched best practices, which I quickly discovered was to form a grid pattern and space wafers apart by 1/2 the ceiling height. I initially loved how bright the room was, but after living many months with the new lighting I felt there was something wrong with the light quality, it made me feel uncomfortable and the light quality felt institutional instead of inviting. Recently I’ve been doing an deep dive into what lighting designers consider best practices and was very surprised to learn that wafers are universally hated, because of glare, and that lamps are a favorite tool. I’ve always thought of lamps as “not modern”. I guess many others feel the same way because I’ve been collecting unwanted lamps from my friends and neighbors, adding dumb dim-to-warm bulbs (Philips Ultra Definition, 2700K-2200K, $2.50 per bulb), plugging them into a Lutron smart lamp dimmer, and finally automating the smart dimmer with circadian dimming with Home Assistant’s ridiculously powerful Adaptive Lighting add-on. I have now become a floor lamp evangelist, to the chagrin of my wife and kids.
