Make the most of an extra day in Ames https://liveinames.com/itineraries/make-the-most-of-an-extra-day-in-ames/ Tue, 13 Feb 2024 04:32:41 +0000 https://liveinamesarea.com/make-the-most-of-an-extra-day-in-ames/ This year, we’re lucky enough to get an extra day of the month, and we know just how to spend it. Leap Day doesn’t happen very often (every four years, to be exact!) So, it’s important to celebrate this unique holiday in the best way possible. Here’s our recommendations to enjoy this extra special day in Ames.

Leap into new adventures

Having an extra day in Ames is the perfect opportunity to broaden your horizons and try something new. If you’re seeking thrills, look no further than the Iowa State Skydiving Club. With regularly scheduled jumps, the club’s goal is to educate and encourage others to get involved with this dare-devil activity. But, if you’re looking for a fun venture that’s a little closer to the ground, head over to the Ames/ISU Ice Arena. Enjoy a game of pick-up hockey, power skating, figure freestyle, or just skate on your own.

Think outside the box

Use this Leap Day to push the boundaries of logical thinking and have fun while doing it! No Escape Iowa in downtown Ames is sure to provoke some creative problem-solving. Their technology-based escape rooms are fun for all ages. After solving puzzles and escaping, head over to The Mucky Duck Pub with your group for a free appetizer! For a more relaxed atmosphere of game play, check out Time Out, Ames’ very own arcade bar.

Dive into new dining

New year, new food! Take this day to let your tastebuds explore new dining experiences around Ames. Cornbred, a locally loved barbecue joint, has recently launched new sticky ribs. Trust us on this, these ribs are out of this world. Since Leap Day falls on a Thursday, it’s the perfect day to take advantage of BOGO margaritas at Celaya Tex-Mex! Sip on a house-made marg and enjoy their delicious chips and queso.

Create something new

After another (full) trip around the sun, it’s time to get crafty. Octagon Center for the Arts is full of fun and festive holiday workshops all year long. Sign up for a class, pick up supplies for your next craft, or purchase locally made art! Reiman Gardens is another unique place full of nature-themed activities and crafts. While you’re there, don’t forget to stop by the butterfly wing!

Dress for the occasion

It’s not very often that you can plan an outfit for February 29, that’s why it’s important to treat yourself. Located in NorthGrand Mall, Ragstock is the perfect vintage store to shop for an updated wardrobe. They’re always having sales, so keep an eye out for a good deal! To bring the outfit together, stop by Ames Silversmithing for some new bling. The jewelry at this downtown shop is created by professionals for a one-of-a-kind look.

An off-beat Ames weekend https://liveinames.com/itineraries/an-off-beat-ames-weekend/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 03:35:39 +0000 https://liveinamesarea.com/an-off-beat-ames-weekend/ make ames weird cornbred sign

Do you need to shake up your routine? Want to break the tradition of eating at the same restaurants? Looking for a new hobby? We understand how you feel. Luckily, there is always something more to discover in Ames. Break out of your routine and spend an off-beat weekend in Ames.

Staycation

Who says you must travel far and wide for a fulfilling vacation? Not us! Stay right here in Ames at one of the many bed and breakfasts around town. Located on sustainable farm, Loya’s Little House B&B is perfect for a short or extended stay. In addition to a full breakfast of locally grown food, guests can participate in a variety of activities on the farm: biking trails, bird and wildlife watching, kayaking, tubing, and so much more! At this spot, you may never want to leave.

Find new adventures

Did you know that Ames has not one, but two scenic byways? The Iowa Lincoln Highway Heritage Byway and the Iowa Jefferson Highway Byway are full of amazing views and fun activities to explore. One of the can’t-miss sites along the Lincoln Highway is the monarch butterfly migration! Millions of monarch butterflies fly right through the Des Moines River Valley on their journey to Mexico for the winter. You don’t see that every day!

If you’re searching for a new place to take the kids, or are in need of some outdoor fun, look no further than the Miracle Park at Inis Grove. This beautiful playground delivers something fun for all ages and abilities. Including double-wide accessible ramps and nature-inspired play equipment.

Fun fact about Ames: It is home to the largest Grant Wood Murals. Wood was known for his American Gothic painting, and I’m sure you’ve seen his most famous piece of a stoic farm couple. These murals, highlighting education and agriculture, are located at Iowa State University Parks Library.

Unique eats

It’s never too late to try something new. Let your tastebuds explore everything Ames has to offer. Blue Fish Poke Bowl, located in the heart of Campustown, is a hidden gem you don’t want to miss. This locally owned restaurant offers customizable sushi-bowls and great service that we definitely recommend. If seafood isn’t your thing, The Grove Café is a classic diner for breakfast and lunch. Known for their huge pancakes, The Grove has homestyle eats and good vibes for everyone.

Celebrate Dad this Father’s Day in Ames https://liveinames.com/itineraries/celebrate-dad-this-fathers-day-in-ames/ Wed, 14 Jun 2023 00:10:12 +0000 https://liveinamesarea.com/celebrate-dad-this-fathers-day-in-ames/ If you are wondering how to celebrate Father’s Day with the people you love, look no further. Here is your Father’s Day itinerary for a perfect day with the family.

Father and daughter walking by tulips in Reiman Gardens

Morning

All the dads out there better be sleeping in! Once you wake up from your peaceful slumber, go get some delicious brunch! We recommend Cornbred Barbecue’s Sunday brunch to start your day off right.

After eating to your heart’s content, visit Reiman Gardens. Reiman Gardens is offering free admission to all fathers on Father’s Day. Stroll through the garden, buy yourself something at the gift shop, and make some butterfly friends in the Christina Reiman Butterfly Wing.

Afternoon

Next, we suggest making your kids carry your golf bag or reserving a cart (although that’s less fun) for a few holes at Veenker Memorial Golf Course, Coldwater Golf Links, or Homewood Golf Course. Appreciate the green grass and fresh air for a few hours while playing at one of Ames’ best.

Now it’s time for a late lunch. Keep on enjoying the nice weather by sitting out on the patio at Sweet Caroline’s. Eat some great food, then go window shopping down Main Street once you’re finished.

Evening

After lunch, head on over to Perfect Games, where you can bowl, play arcade games, and play laser tag with the whole family. Enjoy some of their yummy drinks and appetizers if all the fun makes you hungry. If you’re super competitive, we suggest eating after you finish the laser tag (just to be safe).

You might be worn out from the fun you’ve had all day, which is okay! Dads deserve to relax. If you want to relax, but aren’t quite ready to turn in for the day, check out Roosevelt Park at 7 p.m. Bring a blanket or a couple of lawn chairs and enjoy the free live music that Roosevelt Park offers. This week’s musical entertainment will be performed by Son Peruchos.

Alluvial Brewing Company is just three miles north of Ames. Their indoor taproom features 10 unique varieties of craft beer dedicated to quality and taste while celebrating Iowa at the same time. Rather be outside? They offer an outdoor patio with seating, making this a great place to stop for a cold one before hopping back on your bike.

Take your a ride at Tedesco Environmental Learning Corridor, a 37-acre community space that features paved and natural trails to bike on. Or, head north to Ada Hayden Heritage Park for a lap around the beautiful lake.

Need a drink after all that biking? Head to Mother’s Pub for their popular drink called Mother’s Milk, an iced twist on a classic spiked coffee. Sip on the patio while you immerse yourself in the atmosphere of campustown.

Or, visit the ISU Creamery, located on Iowa State’s campus on the second floor of the Food Sciences Building. The Creamery can be difficult to get to via vehicle, so while you’re biking is the perfect time to try it out – and see more of campus! Skunk River Cycles in downtown Ames sells bikes, helmets, parts, tires, shoes, clothing, and more. While they feature Cannondale, Raleigh, and Marin cycles, they provide service on any make, model, or year of bicycle. Drop by to make a new purchase, get a repair, ask for advice, or just to say hi to some fellow bicyclists!

Summer family-fun activities are here! https://liveinames.com/itineraries/summer-family-fun-activities-are-here/ Tue, 14 Mar 2023 20:26:32 +0000 https://liveinamesarea.com/summer-family-fun-activities-are-here/ Warm weather is here, and long summer days simply beg for new activities – especially among our littlest Ames residents. Try these family-friendly locales in Ames to cure even the worst cases of the wiggles.

Stop and smell the roses

Nothing says summer quite like walking through Reiman Gardens. Take the kids to a hands-on gardening class, like caterpillar club, floral design, or an all-day spring break camp. Bring your dogs on Tuesday nights, celebrate Father’s Day, and enjoy the Garden Art Fair on July 9. Explore the towering tropical plants and eye-catching flowers in the conservatory, and try to spot a Blue Morpho in the Butterfly Wing.

A father and daughter stroll through the tulips at Reiman Gardens.

Play all day

There’s tons of ways to get rid of that summer energy out at Brookside Park. Climb on one of the multiple playgrounds; walk, bike, or run on the walking path; or play a game on the tennis, basketball, pickleball, or sand volleyball courts.

Take a ride

Enjoy the beautiful scenery around Ames with a thrilling ride through the Des Moines River Valley on Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad’s Sunset BBQ Train, complete with a delicious barbecue dinner. The kids (and you) will love it! One of Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad's trains on a rainy day.

Have a shopping spree

Take a shopping trip downtown to The Pumpkin Patch to browse their collection of classic, nostalgia-inducing toys, dolls, games, stuffed animals and more. Just down the street, check out Duck Worth Wearing for summer outfits for all the kids.

Enjoy a sweet treat

Try a new flavor of homemade ice cream at Marmalade Moon on Main Street. The flavors rotate, so check out their Facebook before you go to see which delicacies are on deck!

Get creative

Let your little one’s creative juices flow by painting their own pottery at The Workspace, located in the ISU Memorial Union. Find yourself with a few hours and nothing to do? Check out what drop-in class they’re offering that day!

Grab a new read

Reading is fundamental, and fun! Take a trip to Dog-Eared Books to pick out a new book, or head to Ames Public Library to check out a stack. With a wide range of picture books, early-reader picks, and graphic novels for kids, your little ones are sure to pick books they’ll love to read.
