Protecting the People Who Build Our Communities

As an industry-led, non-profit organization, Construction Safety Nova Scotia is committed to helping workers and employers create safer, healthier jobsites. Through education, hands-on support, and resources developed with industry partners, CSNS works to reduce injuries and build a strong culture of safety across Nova Scotia’s construction and related industries.

Raising Awareness of Silica Safety

Crystalline silica is one of the most common—and least visible—workplace hazards in Nova Scotia. Found in materials like concrete, stone, and drywall, it becomes dangerous when cut or disturbed, releasing dust particles too small to see. Over time, exposure can lead to serious and irreversible illnesses such as lung cancer, COPD and silicosis, a serious and irreversible lung disease. These illnesses often develop over time and can have lasting impacts on health.

This silica safety campaign supports Construction Safety Nova Scotia’s goal of increasing awareness of these risks and promoting safer work practices across the province. With the right tools, resources, and controls in place, silica-related illness is preventable. By understanding where silica is found and how to reduce exposure, we can all contribute to safer, healthier worksites.

Funding

The silica safety awareness campaign is made possible in part through funds from the Occupational Health and Safety Education Trust Fund.
