I’m PhD student in my third year at the University of Maryland, College Park, advised by Kate Mooney and Naomi Feldman. In alphabetical order, the lovely members of my cohort are Sarah Boukendour, Cassandra Caragine, Allison Dods, Sebastián Mancha, Sathvik Nair, Malhaar Shah, and Utku Turk.
Broadly speaking, I research the human capacity for language. The kinds of questions that interest me most are: how much phonetic detail is in mental representations of speech sounds? What is the evidence for abstract categories and features? Where does this knowledge come from? I pursue these questions through the world’s languages and infant speech perception, drawing on formal, empirical, and computational methods as needed. Lately, I’m thinking a lot about how we can use large speech models to gain insights into phonological phenomena such as consonant harmony.
