Are YOU ready to add something impressive to your resume?

Gear up for our annual flagship MACathon, the perfect opportunity to flex your creativity in an impactful way.

MACathon is a 48-hour hackathon event in which teams of 2-4 develop the best solution to a theme/problem and present them to a panel of judges! A theme for the projects will be announced just before the event and teams will need to create their solution using IT applications.

With an attractive prize pool of $3000 and a lineup of esteemed sponsors, this isn’t an opportunity to pass up on.

This hackathon is open to students from any Australian university or TAFE! Grab your friends, choose a hacking spot (online if you wish!) and let your creativity run wild!

Tickets are $10 for MAC members and $15 for non-MAC members. If you haven’t already, you can sign up to be a MAC member at Join MAC!

Before the hacking begins, join us for an Opening Ceremony filled with delicious food. Can’t make it to the Opening Ceremony? Not to worry, the event will be live-streamed!

To celebrate your hard work, we’ll close off the hackathon with a Closing Ceremony where our judging panel will select a group of standout submissions to be showcased.

If there’s one event you absolutely CANNOT miss, it’s this one. Sign up now!

Requirements

What to Build

Over 48 hours, your team will work on prototype that tackles a real-world problem with tech-driven solution.

Your solution could be in a form:

  • Web app
  • Mobile app
  • Chatbot
  • Or... something totally unexpected.

We’re looking for originality, creativity, and bold innovation!

What to Submit

All teams must submit the following:

  • A one-sentence elevator pitch that captures the essence of your project.

  • A 300-word project summary outlining:

    • The problem you set out to solve

    • Your proposed solution

    • How you built it (tools, technologies, approach)

    • Any challenges you faced along the way

  • A link to your GitHub repository — make sure it's public so the judges can review your code!

  • A 3-minute video pitch + demo — explain your idea and show it in action! Upload it to YouTube and include the link.

  • Optional: Add any screenshots, diagrams, or extra demos that can help bring your project to life for the judges.

The judging panel will select a group of standout submissions. These teams will have their video pitches showcased to the judges during the MACATHON 2025 Closing Ceremony.

Judging Criteria

  • Creativity
Original idea that is realistic, innovative and strongly connected to the given theme
  • Realisation and Implementation
Did you manage to transform your concept into a real-life prototype within the time limit? Does it do what it’s meant to do reliably and smoothly?
  • Technical Depth
Clean code, logical structure, and well-thought-out design choices will stand out. We’re not just checking if it works—we’re looking at how it works.
  • Quality of Pitch
Can you tell the story of your project in a way that excites, explains, and inspires? It’s not just about what you built—it’s about why it matters.
