About the challenge

MakerHacks II is happening on October 18-19th in downtown San Francisco. It is the US's only pre-collegiate robotics hackathon, and the first overnight hackathon in the Bay Area for the 2025-26 hacking season.

It's fully hardware centered and high-schooler/middle schooler only. For the second time, we'll be releasing a robotics game & field for one of the tracks (similar to FIRST/VEX) where hackers will design and rapidly iterate remote controlled/autonomous robots to solve this engineering design challenge.

There will be:

  • world-class workshops on mechanical design, programming, and integration
  • a 3D print farm and industrial laser cutter for rapid iteration & prototyping
  • large assortment of components (microcontrollers, servos, sensors)
  • plenty of qualified mentors + curriculum to guide the engineering design process
  • prizes consisting of 3D printers, hardware kits, gaming gear, & cash.

Requirements

Robotics Challenge: Full "robotics season" in 24 hours -- teams build & iterate small-scale robots to compete in a fully-fledged, custom-designed robotics game & field. Culminates in a competitive tournament where teams will face off in head-on matches and move up the bracket.

Open Prototype: Design and fabricate a innovative hardware prototype solution to a real-world challenge revealed at the event.

Judging Criteria

  • Mechanical Complexity [ROBOTICS CHALLENGE]
To what degree was the intricacy of your mechanical systems? Did it operate effectively and did you integrate all systems into a fluid machine?
  • Autonomous Routine [ROBOTICS CHALLENGE]
How effectively could your robot operate autonomously? How complex were the processes in which the robot received input and consequently made decisions?
  • Innovation [OPEN PROTOTYPE]
How innovative is your approach in solving the problem? Consider whether your prototype introduces new ideas or technologies, and how this can stand out in a commercial market.
  • Practicality [OPEN PROTOTYPE]
How clearly did your prototype address the real-world problem?of How relevant is your solution to actual user needs from the challenge?
  • Creativity [ALL]
Evaluate how original and imaginative your project was. Did you develop unique strategies or use unexpected approaches to solve challenges?
