Hurricane season in Florida is always unpredictable, and for wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) owners, the risks are even greater. Your WAV is more than just transportation—it’s your independence, your mobility, and your connection to daily life. Unfortunately, flooding can cause extensive damage to these specialized vehicles, often in ways that aren’t immediately visible.

At Manatee Mobility Vans, we want to help you protect your WAV and stay safe this hurricane season. Below is a practical guide on what flooding can do to a wheelchair van, how to prepare when a storm is coming, and what to do if your vehicle is impacted.

How Flooding Affects Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles

Electrical Damage
Floodwaters can short out ramp controllers, wiring, and other electronic components—even in shallow water.

Structural Corrosion
Saltwater and standing water quickly corrode the undercarriage, lowered floors, and frame.

Mechanical Failures
Water contamination can damage fluids, the engine, or the transmission, leading to major breakdowns.

Mold & Hidden Issues
Moisture trapped inside can create long-term problems like mold growth, musty odors, and interior damage.

Compromised Safety Systems
Safety features such as airbags, anti-lock brakes, and sensors may no longer function after water exposure.

Hybrid & Electric Vans
Floodwater can severely damage batteries, leading to high-voltage risks, fires, or total system failure.

What to Do During a Flood Threat

  • Park on higher ground, away from flood-prone areas.

  • Use temporary barriers like sandbags or expandable flood dams for protection.

  • Have an evacuation plan—FEMA and local transit agencies often provide wheelchair-accessible transport options.

  • Never drive through floodwaters. Even a small amount of standing water can cause thousands of dollars in damage.

After a Flood: Next Steps

  • Do not start your vehicle. Starting a flood-damaged WAV can cause irreversible electrical and mechanical failures.

  • Inspect carefully. Remember, much of the damage may be hidden in wiring, flooring, or mechanical systems.

  • Call a professional. A qualified mobility service center should inspect your WAV before it’s used again.

👉 Manatee Mobility Vans’ certified technicians are experts in accessibility vehicles and can perform a comprehensive post-flood inspection to ensure your van is safe.

Traveling with a wheelchair accessible van can be stressful if you don’t plan ahead. Ensure your trip is as stress-free as possible by taking these tips into consideration before you hit the road:

1. Consider Renting a Wheelchair Accessible Van

If you don’t own a wheelchair accessible van or you are flying to your final destination, renting a wheelchair accessible van is a cost-effective solution. Auto Express South offers a variety of wheelchair accessible rental van options for all types of travelers! That includes side entry and rear entry vans as well as vans with a variety of adaptive driving aids. Learn more about renting wheelchair accessible vans here.

2. Research Your Destination’s Accessibility Before You Go

One of the most important things you can do before heading off on your travels is knowing the accessibility of the places you plan on visiting. Researching the best accessible parking spots, knowing if your hotel has parking facilities, and knowing the best ways to drive from point A to point B can make your trip much more enjoyable!

3. Evaluate Your Current Adaptive Driving Aids

If you own a wheelchair accessible van, take stock of what adaptive driving aids you already have and evaluate what other adaptive driving aids may be helpful for a longer trip. For example, if you’ve just been driving your wheelchair accessible van around town, you may not have seen a need for advanced electrical equipment, like an auxiliary battery. However, with longer trips, tools like this may become more useful. For tips on which adaptive driving aids to consider for your travels, speak with Auto Express South’s knowledgeable van equipment department.

4. Have Fun!

Don’t spend so much time on planning logistics that you forget to have fun! Instead, work with Auto Express South to ease the planning burden on you. Auto Express South will work with you to make sure you have everything you need to have an enjoyable vacation, so all you have to do is sit back and relax!

Staying safe in your wheelchair accessible vehicle is of the utmost importance! Here are a few steps you should take to ensure your and your passengers are protected during any drive:

Buy A Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle From A Reputable Dealer

One of the most important elements of wheelchair accessible safety is ensuring you are buying a reliable and trustworthy vehicle. Buying from a trusted dealer in your area, like Auto Express South in Southwest Florida, can give you the peace of mind you need. When you buy from Auto Express South, you can rest assured our technicians have completed a full safety inspection on your vehicle and feel confident in its drive-ability. This will not be an assurance you’ll be granted when you buy from a private seller or a dealer who doesn’t specialize in selling wheelchair accessible vehicles.

Install the Correct Adaptive Equipment

To drive safely, you need all the correct tools to do so! Speaking with Auto Express South’s

Certified Mobility Consultant can help you determine what adaptive equipment will best serve your needs and keep you safe and comfortable. Our Certified Mobility Consultant, Brian, even has a degree in Kinesiology so he truly understands how to make your vehicle the perfect, most comfortable fit for you!

Double Check Wheelchair Securements Before You Go

Safety checks don’t end once you buy your wheelchair accessible vehicle and outfit it with all the right adaptive equipment. It’s still necessary to check your vehicle’s securements every time you drive! Everyone in your vehicle needs to put on their seatbelt before driving begins, but what other checks do you need to make specific to your accessible vehicle? It’s different for every wheelchair accessible vehicle so check with one of the staff members at Auto Express South before you drive away!

Service Your Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle

Now you’ve been driving your wheelchair accessible vehicle for awhile, it’s time to think about getting your first service! Servicing your vehicle is an important part of vehicle safety. Driver evaluations may seem like a waste of time, especially if you’ve been driving a mobility vehicle for years. However, you’ll be surprised at how much you’ll learn and be able to put to use behind the wheel after meeting with a Certified Driving Rehabilitation Specialist! Here’s what you need to know before scheduling your evaluation:

What is a Certified Driving Rehabilitation Specialist?

A Certified Driving Rehabilitation Specialist, or CDRS for short, are independent contractors who are trained or certified to assess the driving abilities of people whose disabilities affect their ability to drive. They also work with the state to provide driver training and education to drivers with disabilities and their caregivers.

What can I expect during a CDRS driver evaluation?

During a driving evaluation, your CDRS will start by performing a physical assessment out of the vehicle. This will include assessing your strength, range of motion, reflexes, cognition, and more. Next up is the clinical test. In this step you’ll get behind the wheel and your CDRS will work with you to find the best adaptive equipment for your needs.

Why are driver evaluations by a CDRS important?

Driver evaluations aren’t just another hoop to jump through in your journey to purchasing a mobility vehicle. In fact, even if you’ve owned a mobility vehicle in the past— they can still be incredibly helpful. That’s because CDRSs are up-to-date on all the latest recommendations for adaptive driving aids. They may have innovative ideas to assist you drive safely and comfortably. Your CDRS may also identify an issue you never even thought of that could pop up when you are driving and help you to find a solution.

Wheelchair accessible vehicles aren’t just minivans and full sized vans– your SUV can be wheelchair accessible too! Here’s how:

  1. Putting in a wheelchair lift

An unoccupied wheelchair lift can be installed on the back of almost any vehicle, including SUVs and sedans. Some wheelchair lifts, like the Chariot or Back-Saver are designed for wheelchairs to ride on the outside of your vehicle. However, with larger SUVs, your wheelchair can also fit inside using a variety of different wheelchair lifts. See the full details of each type of lift here.

  1. Installing a person lift

If you need assistance getting in your SUV, the Milford Person Lift can help! This SUV wheelchair accessible piece of equipment transfers you from your wheelchair straight into the driver’s seat or passenger seat. It uses a comfortable sling that lowers you gently into place. Additionally, it’s small and compact so you can easily store it in your SUV during your journey.

  1. Positioning swivel seats

Person lift not your style? There is another option! Swivel seats like the BraunAbility B&D Transfer Seat can be installed in your vehicle to make getting in and out a breeze. One of the best things about this product is that it just involves modifying the chair you already have in your vehicle. No need for trying to match up trim or style with a new chair— just use what you already have!

  1. Trade your non mobility vehicle in for a lower floor mobility vehicle
Trade your non mobility vehicle in for a lower floor mobility vehicle – especially if you are looking for more head room.

When it comes to wheelchair accessible vans, mini-vans aren’t your only choice. Go big with a full-size wheelchair accessible van. In this article, we’ll explore which full size van is best for your needs. Keep in mind, regardless of which of these options you choose, Auto Express South can help you outfit your full-size van with ramps, lifts, wheelchair securement systems, and all the other accessories you need.

The Low Maintenance Dodge Ram Promaster

One of the most interesting selling points of the Ram Promaster is that it features front wheel drive. The other full size accessible vans we’ll discuss in this article are either four wheel drive, all wheel drive, or rear wheel drive.
The advantage of buying a front wheel drive (FWD) van is that you’ll have better fuel efficiency, lower maintenance costs, and improved traction when it’s slick out.

However, FWD does come with lower towing capacity and limited performance capacity. If those two selling points are high on your list, continue reading about a few other full-size wheelchair accessible van options.

The Fully Customizable Ford Transit

One of the most loved qualities of Ford Transits is how customizable they are. You can choose from different roof heights, wheel bases, seating configurations, and even between rear wheel drive and four-wheel drive. However, keep in mind that the Transits generally have lower fuel efficiency than what you’ll find in a Ram Promaster
  • Rear wheel drive
  • 4,640 payload
  • 7,500 tow
  • 18mpg

The Luxury Mercedes Sprinters

If luxurious amenities matter to you in a full size wheelchair accessible van, you’ll want to go with a Mercedes Sprinter. These sleek vans are the choice for many celebrities and offer advanced safety features. You can also upgrade from rear wheel drive to all-wheel drive. Just be aware that these are the most expensive full size wheelchair accessible vans you’ll likely find on the market.

The Inexpensive Chevrolet Express

The Chevrolet Express may not be as customizable as the Transit, as luxurious as the Sprinter, or as fuel efficient as the Promaster (expect 14-15 mpg) but they do sell at a lower price point! These full size vans are the smallest of the options, with lower ceilings and narrow bodies. However, they have a high tow capacity and can accommodate multiple wheelchairs if need be. They also come in all-wheel drive.
For more information on these full size wheelchair accessible vans and other full size van options, stop by Auto Express South. We can help you through every step of the process in your van purchase and conversion.

If traveling to an Accredited Mobility Supplier to purchase a wheelchair vehicle is out of the question, Auto Express South can help. Here’s how:

Purchasing a Wheelchair Vehicle with a Passenger Setup Remotely

If you are looking for a vehicle that’s wheelchair accessible for a passenger, there’s no need to come visit Auto Express South in person. We can easily work with you over the phone to match a wheelchair vehicle to your needs. When you call, we’ll discuss the type of passenger setup you are envisioning, price considerations, and accessory options. Once we have an idea of what you are looking for, we can offer both in-stock options or options to create your own customized mobility vehicle. It’s as easy as that!

Remotely Buying a Wheelchair Vehicle with a Driver Setup

Buying a wheelchair vehicle with a driver setup is a bit more complicated than a passenger setup. Nevertheless, it is doable. As long as the driver will be transferring to a Braunability Transfer Seat and already has hand controls— the rest can be done remotely! Keep in mind that some equipment, like a QLK-150 Docking Station, will need to be fitted in person. However, Auto Express South can make accommodations to have a technician meet you where you are. Additionally, Auto Express South keeps numerous power chairs and manual chairs in stock that are used exclusively to test dimensions for clients that are not able to access the dealership.
Whether you can’t reach the dealership because of distance, lack of transportation, or it’s just more convenient to work with an Accredited Mobility Supplier over the phone— we are happy to help! Give us a call today to get started.

There are tons of options for vehicle modifications for disabled drivers. However, these are the vehicle modifications that Auto Express South believes you’ll love the most:

1. Push/pull hand controls

Push/pull hand controls are easy to use and a great alternative to expensive, high tech driving systems. The brake and accelerator are both on one simple lever. However, the motion is different to accelerate vs brake so even in a high stress situation, it’s easy to make the correct decision on which motion to choose. At Auto Express South, we offer push/pull hand controls from top-of-the-line manufacturers, like Veigel and MPS.

2. Electronic parking brake

Auto Express South doesn’t just offer the big ticket items for vehicle modifications. We’ve also got you covered on some of the smaller changes to your vehicle as well. For example, if the current parking brake on your vehicle is too hard to pull or too difficult to reach— there is a solution for that! Drive Master offers an Electronic Park Brake (EPB) that can engage or  disengage your park brake with the press of a button. It also automatically shuts off if it detects significant deceleration, to avoid stalling and damage.

3. A functional driver’s seat

If you love everything about your vehicle, including the trim and seats— keep them! The BraunAbility B&D Transfer seat uses your original driver seat but adds 180-degree turning power for comfortable and safe transfers.

4. A simple wheelchair lift

You’re in the driver’s seat but if you don’t have a passenger with you— how are you supposed to get your wheelchair in? There’s an easy vehicle modification for that! The Adapt Solutions Speedy-Lift picks up your chair and tucks it behind the driver’s seat for you. Simple as that!

5. Looking for more?

This is just the start of the vehicle modifications you can find for mobility vehicles at Auto Express South. To see more of the adaptive driving aids we offer, visit our website or stop on by the dealership!

It can feel daunting to be met with all the different lift options for your mobility vehicle! However, this guide will provide you with the information you need to find the best lift for your specific needs. Here’s what you need to know:

Unoccupied vs. Occupied Wheelchair Lifts

There are two main types of wheelchair lifts: occupied wheelchair lifts and unoccupied wheelchair lifts. Just as the name sounds, an occupied wheelchair lift is used to get a person into the vehicle with their wheelchair. On the other hand, unoccupied wheelchair lifts can attach a wheelchair lift behind a vehicle or in the back of a vehicle. Unoccupied wheelchair lifts are ideal if the individual with a disability is driving and/or able to use a person lift to sit in the passenger or back seat. Occupied wheelchair lifts are most common in vans that are set up with extra space and wheelchair securements inside the vehicle.

Securing A Wheelchair Inside vs Outside Your Vehicle

If you have decided you would like an unoccupied wheelchair lift, the next decision to make is whether you would like your wheelchair to be stored behind your vehicle or inside your vehicle. Unoccupied wheelchair lifts that operate outside of your vehicle can be less expensive than wheelchair lifts that stow into the back of your vehicle. However, if you would like to transport your vehicle in inclement weather, you will be better off with a wheelchair lift that brings your wheelchair into your vehicle!

Functionality of Wheelchair Lifts

Each wheelchair lift functions a little differently and offers different options and extras. For example, some wheelchair lifts require you to manually rotate and guide your scooter or powerchair into your vehicle. However, other wheelchair lifts offer features like wireless connectivity! To learn more about the functionality of specific wheelchair lifts or even try them out for yourself, stop by Auto Express South! We would be happy to show you a variety of wheelchair lift options available for purchase.

Interested in learning about the types of steering aids available for mobility vehicles? This article will walk you through a few of the steering aid options available to increase mobility and functionality of vehicles. These steering aids include options for braking, signaling, turning, accelerating, and more.

Effective Steering With Spinners

Spinners are a type of steering aid used to give individuals with disabilities more control over the steering wheel. There are a variety of different types of spinners for different needs. For example, the MPS amputee spinner is specifically made to work with prosthetic devices. Spinners come in a variety of shapes, such as spinner knobs, single post spinners, tri-pin spinners, and quad fork spinners. Each has its own unique advantages. For instance, the quad fork spinner is designed for those with reduced hand strength to have better control over the steering wheel.

Acceleration and Braking

There are a variety of hand control acceleration and braking devices available that can attach right to a vehicle’s steering wheel! For example, Push Rock devices allow for full range braking and acceleration with minimal hand travel while keeping the hand in a natural position. Another option is Viegel hand controls. These hand controls aren’t attached to the steering wheel but rather sit on the driver’s side, near the center console.

Signaling, Turning and More

A variety of devices exist to help with signaling, turning, and other steering functions. MPS offers devices such as right turn levers and drop down turn signals that can be purchased through Auto Express South. Auto Express South is also a Sure Grip dealer and sells items like horn buttons, remote buttons, and more than can be attached to your steering wheel.

Buying a mobility vehicle is a large investment and can be a difficult decision as a caretaker. However, these four considerations will help you to make the right choice and find a mobility vehicle that perfectly meets all your needs!

1. Considering The Specific Needs of the Individual

No two people with disabilities are the same— and their vehicles shouldn’t be either! It’s important to consider the needs of an individual before buying a mobility vehicle. For example, some adaptive equipment may be helpful for certain individuals but a hindrance for others. The best way to find out what feels and works best in a mobility vehicle is to stop by Auto Express South in Fort Myers and take a look at our in-stock options. We can show you around vehicles with different adaptive equipment and you can even try out the equipment to see if you like how it works!

It’s very important to have a Certified Mobility Consultant do a needs assessment for the wheelchair user – this is a priority. At Auto Express South, we need to ensure the size of the individual in the chair with seated height, width, and length of the manual or power chair to ensure the right vehicle and conversion is selected. Dimensions play a very important role here.

2. Where Does the Wheelchair User Want to Sit?

Before you stop by Auto Express South, it is important to know where the wheelchair user wants to sit in the vehicle. Ask yourself if the wheelchair user wants to sit midship (middle of the vehicle) or in the passenger seat area (passenger seat removed). If you would like your loved one in the passenger seat area you will need to go with a side entry van, not a rear entry van. We can better explain this during your needs assessment!

3. Who Will Be the Caretaker?

Another important consideration – who will be the caretaker? Is the caretaker a loved one or a spouse? Are they able to lift a manual ramp or do they need power operation? What type of equipment needs to go in the van? Is the caretaker a company that is hired with multiple people, if so a manual conversion is more cost-effective and easier to use without training. If you are the caretaker reading this, its vital to know what works for you too.

4. Deciding Whether To Buy New Or Used

At Auto Express South, we are the leading source for wheelchair-accessible vehicle sales in Southwest Florida. You’ll find a wide selection of new, used, and pre-owned mobility vehicles on our lot that are suited for a variety of budgets and mobility needs. If you come to our lot and find a used mobility vehicle that perfectly meets your needs, this can be much cheaper than buying a brand new mobility vehicle. However, if you have a specific type of vehicle build in mind – buying new can provide you with more flexibility in meeting your unique needs.
To learn more about the mobility vehicles available at Auto Express South, give us a call at 239-693-4000 or stop by our Fort Myers lot for a tour!

Hurricane Ian left its mark on residents and businesses throughout Southwest Florida; Ian will go down in history as being one of the strongest storms to ever hit our coastline. Many individuals lost homes, vehicles, and so much more!

If you lost your wheelchair accessible vehicle or if it was damaged because of the storm, we are here to help you get the service or repairs it will need. The following three tips will hopefully help guide you through the repair process.

File an Insurance Claim

If your wheelchair accessible vehicle was damaged, I’m sure you’re in the process of filing a claim with your insurance provider. This should be the very first step you take after the storm. Keep in mind any water intrusion will total a wheelchair accesisble vehicle. The wiring is typically built into the floorboards of wheelchair accessible vehicles. So, if your insurance adjuster is making the claim that it is not totaled, give Auto Express South a call. As an authorized dealer, we will back you up and give your adjuster our expert opinion. We’ve dealt with this in the past, and are fully prepared to help you with your insurance claim.
If you are unsure if you’ve had any water come in to your vehicle, make sure to give us a call to schedule an inspection right away.

Schedule an Inspection from an Authorized Dealer

Auto Express South is a BraunAbility, and VMI authorized service center. If you received damage to your wheelchair accessible vehicle from the storm, please reach out to us. Our service center is open, and we can service all makes/models.

Find a Replacement Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle

If you are looking for a replacement wheelchair accessible vehicle, Auto Express South can assist you with this too! If your current vehicle is getting serviced, we have rentals that we can offer while your car is getting fixed. However, if your wheelchair accesisble vehicle was totaled from the storm, we have a variety of vehicles that will hopefully meet your mobility needs.

Auto Express South has the largest available inventory in Southwest Florida. We are dedicated to helping you find the mobility vehicle that you are looking for. Check us out online or visit our showroom!

Maintaining and servicing your wheelchair accessible vehicle can help you save time and money, as well as keep you safe on the road.

When you purchase a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, it’s considered a substantial investment. When you drive it off the lot, you want to make sure you keep up with the maintenance and upkeep. Even if your car is already in great condition, the following tips can help you get the most out of your vehicle, no matter what.

Regularly Drive Your Accessible Vehicle

The first thing that comes to mind that would help everything performance-wise is to regularly drive your accessible vehicle. Letting a vehicle sit around can be pretty harmful. Keeping your vehicle on the move helps slow corrosion.

Remember Your Accessible Vehicle Maintenance Appointments

Don’t sleep through your maintenance appointments! Keeping up with the regular maintenance schedule can help prevent costly repairs. Taking good care of your vehicle extends their overall life as well as keep them performing at their best. Your service appointments should be every six months. Keep in mind, failing to service the mobility equipment on your vehicle can lead to manufacturers denying warranty claims.

Find A Service Facility for a Wheelchair Van That You Trust

Keep your mobility product with a certified mobility dealer. Auto Express South is a BraunAbility, and VMI authorized service center. We are a certified mobility dealership that services all makes and models of wheelchair accessible vehicles.

Learn Your Accessible Vehicle Safety Systems

If you experience a mechanical problem with your wheelchair accessible vehicle, you need to understand how to use ALL safety systems. At Auto Express South, we will walk you through all the safety systems in your wheelchair-accessible vehicle and the best way to handle any situation.

What You Should Know About The Power Of Emotional Support Animals

While all of our employees at Auto Express South are friendly and welcoming, one employee really stands out as being the friendliest, most welcoming— and definitely the most slobbery of all! That honor goes to Cobalt the Great Dane, our emotional support dog at Auto Express South. Here’s why Cobalt and other emotional support animals play such an important role in the lives of those they serve:

While Emotional Support Animals Are Different Than Service Animals, Both Play An Important Role In People’s Lives

Unlike service animals, emotional support animals aren’t trained for specific tasks. Additionally, while service animals provide support to one specific individual, emotional support animals can support more than one person. Both service animals and emotional support animals play important roles and at Auto Express South, we appreciate all working animals— whether they are trained service animals or emotionally supportive ones!

The Comfort An Emotional Support Animal Provides Is Often Unparalleled

While our employees at Auto Express South often put smiles on customers’ faces, no one is able to do it quite as fast as our Great Dane, Cobalt! That’s because Cobalt’s job, like any other emotional support animal, is to provide you with unconditional love and give you his undivided attention. While we do joke about Cobalt helping us with demonstrations or assisting with sales— we all know his main focus is brightening the day of employees and customers alike.
Whether you have questions about the vehicles and equipment for sale at Auto Express South or would just like to stop by to love on Cobalt and learn more about the role of emotional support animals, we’d love for you to stop by!
