When Emily’s twin, Amelia, ended up in the hospital twice, she knew that stress wasn’t something to be dismissed as “all in your head”. First of all, the head is connected to the body (by the neck), so stress is a physical issue that you can feel and be hurt by in all sorts of ways. Too much stress, at work, at home, in life, and you can run up against a real burnout situation. And it can wreak havoc on you mental health and physical health. The Nagoski twins are the authors of Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle and Emily joins us to talk about how our stress response instincts aren’t that different than a zebra’s when faced with a lion. The difference? A zebra knows how to complete a stress cycle and return to normal, whereas we’re likely to hold on to work worries, relationship concerns, or other stresses around the clock, pursued by the lion constantly. Emily has advice on how to complete those cycles, get to a better place, and fight burnout. A big part of that is what she calls “bubbles of love”. Not a sex thing.

When Paxton’s ultimatum puts a lot of aliens on edge, Samuels insists there’s only one way to be sure he won’t fire the array. But after an away team makes it to the polar region of Mars, wooden shoes are flying in every direction and Phlox can’t save Tucker and T’Pol’s baby. What’s the garment of secrets? We’ve never had occasion to use the phrase “titular basterd” on our show before but here it is, possible and even necessary in writing about Paul Rust and the film Inglourious Basterds. We’re not misspelling “basterd” or “inglourious”, mind you, that was director Quentin Tarantino’s artistic choice. Q was also the one who cast Paul Rust, veteran comedy performer in movies and TV, as part of the ensemble of heroes, albeit one with no lines. Paul figures Tarantino thought he looked the part and seemed like an easy guy to hang out with. We think so too! Paul tells us all about making collages, how to gather the materials, how to lay down the pictures and glue them, and how to not get too hung up on everything being perfect. He DID nod his head a lot in the movie and he recreates that for us here. Even on audio, you can sense that he nailed it. Go to sleep hearing about collages and knowing the Nazis were defeated.
Get your copy of Paul Rust's wife Lesley Arfin's art book, Tickle Me, at www.DragCity.com.

Get ready, folks: from April 20 to May 1, we’re gonna celebrate our shows, the network, and the members who make it all possible!
We’ll have meetups, in-person and remote live shows, and—of course—a metric ton of new bonus content from all our podcasts.
All of your favorite shows are funded directly by MaxFunsters who want to make sure they keep going. If you're a member, you’re not just supporting the shows you love—you’re part of a community full of people like you who care about independent media and who believe that cool art shouldn’t be beholden to the whims of corporations that will cancel something awesome just to save a few pennies. And, while we may be a little biased, we think that makes you really freaking cool. Thanks for your support!
(If you're not a member yet, become one during MaxFunDrive! You might even get some cool gifts, too! But more on those next month…) As we get closer to the Drive, things are probably gonna get a little bananas (complimentary), so be sure you're following MaxFunHQ and your favorite shows on social media so you don’t miss anything.
The MaxFunDrive classic returns! On Meetup Day, MaxFunsters around the world host meetups for local fans of the network. Hosting a meetup is super easy—all you’ve gotta do is find a venue that can accommodate a small group, tell us about it so we can add it to our directory, and show up during the meetup to hang out and make new friends!
When: Friday, May 1, 7:00pm PT (doors at 6:30pm)
Where: The Stray Theater in Los Angeles, CA (plus, live on our YouTube channel)
Who: You!
Do you want to join us at The Stray? Please do—the event is free and open to everyone! However, we’ll have a very limited number of seats available, so keep an eye on your inbox, our Instagram, and our Bluesky to make sure you don’t miss your chance to grab tickets. If you can’t join us in person, how about joining up with friends remotely? Hosting a watch party with your friends is a great way to enjoy the finale with other people who have excellent taste, even if you can’t get to LA. Let us know through email ([email protected]) or Instagram/Bluesky DMs if you’re having one and we’ll shout you out in the pre-show!Some recs from MaxFunHQ staff. “I just rewatched The Long Walk, my favorite film of 2025. The first time I saw it was in a dine-in theater, with a huge novelty-size milkshake and an order of piping-hot pickle chips. I had not been briefed on what this film was about. Both the bev and the snack sat untouched by the time the film ended. On this viewing, I managed to get through it without crying 95% of the time—only about 50%.” - Jordan Kauwling, Producer“Whenever I mention Survivor to someone, I either get a ‘that show’s still on?’” or I find a new person who loves it as much as I do. I’ve been watching since my roommate got me into it in college. We’re two eps into Season 50 right now and it’s just so much fun. I want to talk to everyone about it! Whether you want to watch the full broadcast or not, the live performance of Pete Parkkonen and Linda Lampenius is EPIC. Linda is a classical violinist, sports car racer, model and actress, and Pete is the grandson of Pierre Rassin, a Black jazz musician from Martinique. Douze points.” - Laura Swisher, Senior Producer“Here’s one for Oscars season. I watched The Secret Agent (O Agente Secreto) which is nominated for Best Picture. Ooooh baby this was a good good movie. The runtime is intimidating but I think it is well earned. Everything is just leading up to this one moment and when it happens its like OKAY BABY HERE WE GO. The patients in the therapy sessions in the new film GROUP: The Schopenhauer Effect are actors, but it’s not a scripted film. The actors were given characters and circumstances and then they improvised dialogue with each other and with the group leader, who is also acting. Kind of. Dr. Elliott Zeisel is one of the most important figures in group therapy in America since the 1970s. With all that knowledge and experience powering him along, he also improvised his dialogue, based on what he was being said. The result is a remarkably honest and moving portrayal of group therapy. We talk with Dr. Zeisel about the film and about how group therapy works, what to expect, who’s a good candidate for it, and which myths need to be dispelled.

Willie Colón died last month. He was 75.
If you know what salsa music is, basically, you can thank Willie Colón. He was a trombonist, producer, bandleader, composer, and pioneer of salsa music. Growing up in the South Bronx, he and some of his friends from the neighborhood would take their instruments and jam outside in the summers. Colón went on to secure a record deal in his teens and then became a hugely influential musician and bandleader.
In 1967, Colón put out his first album when he was just a teenager. He helped take the Latin soul sound of boogaloo into the salsa age. Over a career that spanned nearly 60 years, he cut over 40 records and produced many more for superstars like Celia Cruz, Rubén Blades, and Héctor Lavoe, selling over 30 million copies worldwide.
When Colón joined us back in 2014, he talked about finding success in music at a young age, what he envisioned for the future of salsa music, and his beginnings with the singer Hector Lavoe.
A version of this interview originally aired in February of 2014]]>
March is Women’s History month, and all the movies we cover this month will be directed by women! To kick things off, we’re leaning into the “history” part, and going back to 1953 to cover the most popular film from a truly pioneering director (and prolific actor), the one and only Ida Lupino. It’s The Bigamist, with our special guest, a journalist covering culture and history, Hadley Hall Meares!
What’s Good
Alonso - Stephen Rebello’s new book Hitchcockian Thrillers
Drea - Canada Dry Strawberry Fruit Splash Ginger Ale Zero Sugar
Hadley - Jane Fonda’s My Life So Far (for Vanity Fair’s Old Hollywood Book Club)
Kevin - Brand new cast iron skillet

Jordan sits down with the one and only Matthew Lillard, an actor who looms large in the hearts of any Millennial horror lover, and whose fruitful career is still going strong -- right now he can be seen in CROSS Season 2, SCREAM 7, and FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY'S 2. But you might be surprised to learn that he devoted a decade of his life to getting one particular movie made: his directorial debut, FAT KID RULES THE WORLD, starring Jacob Wysocki. He shares that creative journey with Jordan -- from falling in love with an audiobook he was narrating to winning the Audience Award at SXSW -- on today's episode.

You may have seen Stephnie (not a typo, she spells it that way) Weir as a cast member on Mad TV or in appearances on Modern Family, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and Lady Dynamite. But if you live near Stephnie or happen to be a close friend or colleague, you may also know her from the handmade holiday napkins she distributes to her inner circle. She methodically walks us through the steps of gathering supplies and creating these gifts. She also admits to occasionally checking in on the recipients to see whether the napkins are part of their lives or have mysteriously vanished. When Stephnie had occasion to work with Billy Crystal, she wanted to make him some very special New York Yankees napkins, since that’s his favorite team. It did not go smoothly and you’ll drift off to sleep imagining a politely perplexed Billy Crystal.

Joyce Manor is a three-piece punk band out of Torrance, California. They’re in their 20th year of making music together. For the uninitiated, their sound can be described as anthemic and sometimes nostalgic. You can expect all of the energy and excitement of popular acts like Green Day or Blink 182, with an added maturity in their lyrics. They just released their 7th album, I Used To Go To This Bar.
Barry Johnson, Chase Knobbe, and Matt Ebert from Joyce Manor talk with Bullseye about growing up together in the SoCal punk music scene, touring as a small act before the internet, and constantly being applauded for finally being “all grown up,” despite being in their late 30s.

Although he has a huge following on social media now, Jonathan Edward Durham’s life as a writer used to be a lot more low tech. It involved locking himself in a room in Los Angeles, pounding away on screenplays that almost no one ever read, sucking back smokes and liquor, barely sleeping, and finding himself to actually be pretty miserable. He did manage to write and self-publish a novel, Winterset Hollow, that found an audience, which led to getting online to promote it. He started to write more online, finding an audience, effectively keeping a journal to understand himself and the challenges he was facing in his life and in his mental health. Jonathan left Los Angeles, met a guy and got married, and came to a much better understanding of problems he had been dealing with his whole life. The second edition of Winterset Hollow comes out this fall and Jonathan is at work on a new book now.
We also hear from John Moe about getting mad, starting MADD, and how to interview the anger that you’re feeling to see what injustice it’s alerting you to.
Of note, we kept seeing Jonathan’s short writing come up in our Preshies group on Facebook so much that we eventually had to book the guy. Thanks, Preshies, you are all now associate producers.

Noé Montes is a photographer based in Los Angeles.
Montes was born in Modesto, California. His parents worked on farms, and he remembers moving around the Southwest as the seasons changed.
His work as a photographer often documents migrant farmworker communities like the one he grew up with. Most photographs about migrant farmworking ignore the workers and focus on the challenges of the job. Montes' photographs show these people … as people.
Montes' work extends beyond portraits of farmworkers. He's made incredible work in studio, landscapes and some truly breathtaking street photography.
Montes joins Bullseye to talk about what it was like starting a career in photography as a middle-aged adult. He also talks about the importance of telling a story through his subjects and photographs.
If you live in Southern California, you can see some of that work at the Riverside Art Museum. His solo show "Noé Montes: Regional History" is running now through April 19.]]>

Episode 193: Ginger Gonzaga Interview
This is the After Show for Yellow, featuring Andrew’s conversation with writer and actor Ginger Gonzaga.
Many listeners know Ginger from her roles in Marvel’s She-Hulk, CBS’s True Lies, Showtime’s Kidding, I’m Dying Up Here, HBO’s Togetherness, and Room 104. But in this episode, the spotlight shifts to her as a creator as well as a performer.
Andrew and Ginger talk about coming up in the heavily male improv scene of the early 2000s, the delicate (and sometimes not-so-delicate) politics of improvising in auditions and on set, and how her background in high school speech and debate shaped her confidence as a storyteller. She also shares a wild story about pitching a show centered on mental health at a time when that topic wasn’t exactly trending in development meetings or even in the national conversation.
It’s candid, funny, and full of insight about carving out space as a performer and writer. Most of all, it makes clear just how much Yellow means to her.

THE JORDAN MORRIS WORLD TOUR!! (jk, it's just a couple of dates)
Jordan Morris is known to Maximum Fun fans as the funny and engaging co-host of Jordan, Jesse, Go! and Free With Ads. He also makes comics, such as the new Predator: Bloodshed series. It’s all about the Predator, monster sci-fi icon, and his efforts to purchase and install a new shed to put all his blood in. He goes to Home Depot, he tries building one himself after watching YouTube videos, but all the sheds leak blood out, ruining the Predator’s begonias. None of that is true. But there really is a Predator: Bloodshed series, Jordan is behind it, and it’s quite entertaining, as is Jordan. On our program, Jordan tells us all about the many iterations of Godzilla and how the canonical word for the sound Godzilla makes is “skreeonk.” Will it be hard to sleep thinking about Godzilla? No. You’re not a building. You’ll be fine.
Get your copy of Predator: Bloodshed wherever comics are sold. Listen and subscribe to Jordan, Jesse, Go! and Free With Ads on the podcatcher of your choice.

In an era where superhero movies are few and far between, famed music producer Quincy Jones sets out to adapt the story of the recently introduced superhero, Steel. However, between a writer/director who wanted to change the entire story, to Warner Bros. slashing the entire budget, it's a wonder this movie got made at all!]]>

The movie Sinners has been out now for over ten months. In that time, it has grossed about 370 million dollars. It has climbed to the top of countless best of 2025 lists. And now it’s nominated for sixteen Oscars. One of those nominations is for Best Original Song. "I Lied To You," which was written by composer Ludwig Goransson and Raphael Saadiq.
Aside from being the writer of one of the biggest movie songs in recent history, Raphael Saadiq is a singer and songwriter who’s made five acclaimed records under his own name. And with his brother and cousin, he founded Tony! Toni! Toné!, one of the most exciting groups in R&B history.
Raphael joined us to chat about Sinners and what he thought when he saw the song he wrote come to life in the film. He also told us about playing bass guitar as a teen in church bands, and the final tour he got to go on with his late brother D’Wayne.

You might remember Alexandra Paul as one of the stars of Baywatch or the Tom Hanks-Dan Aykroyd Dragnet film. You may not have realized that as a child and on to her long trip through the worlds of modeling and Hollywood, she was bingeing and purging and dealing with severe eating disorders. She tells us about her relationship with sugar and what food meant emotionally. Then we’re joined by Dr. Cynthia Bulik, one of the top experts on eating disorders in the world today, to talk about remarkable progress in understanding the genetic components of eating disorders. Rather than blame family (especially mothers), peer pressure, or fashion culture, Dr. Bulik says some people are much more prone to developing eating disorders due to the genes they happened to get. You can be part of her research by visiting EDGI2.org.

In a career spanning over five decades, Ron Carter has played jazz, classical, soul, and hip-hop. He’s won three Grammys and worked with folks like Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin, Billy Joel, A Tribe Called Quest, and many more.
When Carter joined us back in 2022, he was gearing up to celebrate his 85th birthday at Carnegie Hall. These days, the man is 88 and is unstoppable. He recently released a record with gospel icon Ricky Dillard titled "Sweet, Sweet Spirit." It’s a gospel record that also serves as a tribute to Carter’s mother.
Carter takes us back to when he first picked up an instrument, the cello, and how he eventually found the bass. He also talks about the time he played bass for A Tribe Called Quest on Low End Theory – and how he gave them the business about swear words.

Episode 192: Yellow Written by Ginger Gonzaga
This month’s live episode features Yellow, a pilot written by Ginger Gonzaga. Most people know Ginger from her work in front of the camera—she’s appeared in Marvel’s She-Hulk, CBS’s True Lies, Showtime’s Kidding, I’m Dying Up Here, HBO’s Togetherness, and Room 104. Yellow showcases her voice as a writer.
After being arrested, following a very public hypomanic episode Pepper, A witty visual artist is court ordered to live in a halfway house with an ensemble of lovable misfits that she deems crazier than herself. This soulful and at times surreal dramedy follows pepper as she navigates her artistic career. The tone moves fluidly between grounded emotion and offbeat humor, building a layered ensemble piece that feels both personal and expansive.
Ginger leads the cast in the live performance, surrounded by an incredible group of actors including Luke Tennie (Shrinking), Burl Moseley (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), Kyle Bornheimer (St. Denis Medical), Lauren Potter (Glee), Mel Rodriguez (The Residence, Last Man on Earth), Lucy Parks Urbano (actor/playwright), Bryan Safi (Throwing Shade), Beth Dover (Orange Is the New Black, Nobody Wants This), Jessica Sula (Split, Michael), with stage direction by Andrew Reich.

We’re hundreds of episodes into Sleeping with Celebrities but we’re just now getting a PBS voice on? I know. We’re so sorry. But this will make up for it. The brilliant, engaging, and funny Simeon Lipman from Antiques Roadshow knows more about baseball cards and, actually, punk rock memorabilia than most people will ever know about anything. We’re taking a moment to remember actress and comedian, Catherine O’Hara, who died on January 30, 2026. She was 71 years old.
Catherine O’Hara is a comedy legend. She helped launch SCTV alongside other burgeoning comedy greats like John Candy and her longtime collaborator Eugene Levy. She went on to star in some huge blockbuster comedies. She became spiritually possessed in Beetlejuice. She played a memorable, anxiety-ridden mother to Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone, and became a critical part of Christopher Guest’s ensemble mockumentaries, like Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show. Some other recent favorites include HBO’s critically-acclaimed biopic Temple Grandin and Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie.
For all of its six seasons, Catherine played Moira Rose on Schitt’s Creek, a comedy that follows a wealthy family who are forced to relocate to a tiny, rural town after losing their entire fortune.
When Catherine joined Bullseye in 2013, she talked about the difficulties of being a woman in the SCTV writers’ room. Plus, creating memorable characters with Eugene Levy, and her own secret comedic formula.]]>

Yahya Abdul-Marteen II didn't book his first part until he was nearly 30. Before that, he worked in San Francisco as a city planner. And, for somebody who's been acting for just under a decade, he's portrayed a lot of superheroes and supervillains.
Abdul-Marteen II first appeared in the Jason Moma-fronted Aquaman as Manta, an evil pirate. Then, as Dr. Manhattan, in the critically acclaimed Watchmen series. And now, he plays the title role in the new Marvel series Wonder Man.
Our friend and correspondent, jarrett hill, sat down with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II to talk about Wonder Man and what excited him about taking on the role of Simon in the show. He chatted with us about what it felt like to win his first Emmy and his dream of one day owning a farm.

Ellen takes things slow with the iconic banana slug. We discuss mobile slip 'n' slides, recreationally poisoning yourself, liquid crystals, oobleck, robosnail, slime trains, moisture farming, apophallation, college mascots, and so much more.

You asked, and we finally answered, today we are Finally, actually learning everything! Something that is definitely possible and easy to do. Caroline covers infinity, which can include basically anything, Ella covers what everything is made of, and Tom does the rest! Simple, right?

Cantor's Diagonal Argument
The Bullet Cluster

We also learn about:
Infinity is the amount I love you guys - oh I made such a noise of disgust, my infinity could beat your infinity, quoting The Fault in Our Stars, ancient Greeks had a horror for the infinite, Euclid refused to use infinity, we have no physical proof that any item can be infinite, turning water into wine and counting to infinity, next time someone says I love you infinity plus one call them a number annihilator, pre-scowling, we ask Caroline a million questions about sets, sets offer a new language for math, “actually Ella they use the word transfinite”, Caroline rage baits Ella, Ella loves Cantor’s diagonal argument but people at the time HATED it, Cantor was a “corrupter of youth”, the universe is everything, god dammit is there more than matter, pigeons and pizza and Ella’s giant gengar plush are made of quarks and leptons, ordinary matter is just 5% of the universe, 26.8% is dark matter and the rest is dark energy, dark energy and matter are not interchangeable - dark just means we can’t observe them, your MOM is massive, 1933 dark matter is theorized to make the math work, dark matter is not a theory it is an observation of missing mass, the differing mass of the bullet cluster, halos of dark matter around galaxies, red shift in every direction, don’t @ me about the accelerated expansion of the universe, dark energy is the mysterious force that keeps the universe expanding, heat death or re-contraction, dark matter and dark energy are warring siblings trying to pull everything together and apart and we’re stuck in the middle, list of all wikipedia pages, OH NO IT’S INTERESTING, monk stuff, the exclamation mark came during the humanist era of the renaissance, oh no we printed the ironic bible! inverted exclamation marks, exclamation mark haters, old comics had exclamation marks for periods! Making Beowulf Scream, Lo! per my last email, our show didn’t start with an exclamation mark - it snuck its way into being beloved, no one is sure how the exclamation mark ended up in programming languages, DO anthropomorphize the exclamation mark, please don’t be disappointed we didn’t stop the podcast, We Didn't Stop the Podcast.

The hilarious actor Vella Lovell is a put-upon director of an animal control precinct in the sitcom Animal Control, a role that involves much more animal contact than one would expect for an office job. Turns out Vella, who also played the neighbor Heather on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, has a natural knack for helping animals calm down. This was evident in her long process of introducing a new kitten, Tequila, to her household, which already included a veteran resident cat, Marlo. Sleepyheads, the process took weeks of gentle, gradual exposure under highly controlled conditions, and we’re pleased to report that it was a complete success. Tequila and Marlo are, today, best buddies. We think you’ll be fast asleep before you ever get to that happy friendship moment but maybe you’ll sleep a little better knowing that it turned out so well.
Catch Season 4 of Animal Control on hulu and the previous three seasons on Netflix.

Even though it's associated with Nordic countries, the Sauna has been around in many different cultures for as long as people have been trying to get warm in a hot box. But how about health benefits? Dr. Sydnee talks about the history of saunas and spirituality, as well as the association between sweat and the perception of health – and that even though actual studies don't say anything definite, sometimes it is just nice to get in a warm, steamy room.

Host Austin delves deep into the origins and cultural impact of Choose-Your-Own-Adventure books While they are commonly credited with popularizing interactive fiction, were they REALLY the first? In this special bonus episode, Amber Nash, Christian Danley, and Executive Producer Casey Willis are doing what they do best—wandering through the woods—when they stumble upon a mysterious cassette tape. What’s on it? A secret recording of a podcast episode no one was ever meant to hear… until now.
Consider this a found-footage audio experiment, equal parts curiosity, coincidence, and questionable decision-making.

Joe Cappa is the creator and primary voice actor of the show Haha, You Clowns. Like many Adult Swim shows, it features a very distinct style of animation. Every character is a little grotesque, uneven, and most importantly, the buffest cartoon characters you’ve ever seen. However, underneath the somewhat disconcerting visuals is a wholesome and sweet show.
It follows three huge brothers, The Campbell Boys, who live with their widowed father, an equally huge weather man. Together they navigate life challenges with the help of family and community.
This is Joe Cappa’s first show. Even more impressively, this is his first job in show business.
Cappa joins Bullseye to talk about his fascination with comedically buff characters, learning animation while working at an ad agency in Oklahoma, and borrowing from his real life to create Haha, You Clowns.

When the Entrepreneur is stuck at top speed and Commander Tucker is the only person who can help, Reed gets sprung from the brig to tether him over from the Columbia. But after a cold restart of the warp core leads them to Dr. Phlox, he lies to deploy a bioweapon saving the Colony from getting glassed. Which long-running podcast is making the world worse? What are Boomers uniquely susceptible to? Who is in a race to the bottom honor-wise? It’s the episode that has some physics questions.

The Royal Rumble has come and gone; the first ever edition of the show to be in Saudi Arabia. And once again, it’s the clearest sign of WWE placing profit before the fan experience.
The audience felt slim, the women were forced to wear their full-coverage jumpsuits and the whole just had a vibe that wasn’t befitting a Big 5 PLE.
But there were things that we enjoyed: Roman Reigns and Liv Morgan won the titular match; the former sets up an incredibly compelling match for the World Heavyweight Championship against CM Punk.
Plus seeing Gunther retire AJ Styles was something that clearly emotionally affected everyone in attendance and around the world. But we’ll explain why we actually think this is really compelling booking.
All that and plenty more, but we’re left dreading the next time WWE decides to hold another show in Saudi Arabia.

Join Ellen & special guests, power couple Shannon Hackett and John Bates from the Field Museum, here to talk about the intersection of science, history, and of course, birds in a love letter to the natural history museum. We discuss working alongside SUE the T. rex, specimen pickles, harlequin romance novels, and explore bigger questions like how museum collections can reveal evolution happening around us right now in real-time and help us look into the future, what the average everyday person can learn about themselves and what science actually looks like from a museum, and the hotly contested debate as to whether grey vireos are interesting or not.
