My Body Combat Quest

I recorded my whole body combat session but it somehow got lost (with some other 360 recordings). So I include the non 360 recording messaged to me from the Meta Store. During signup the store gets my account and they send a clip for everybody after their quest.

Anza Fishermans Park

The Facebook Campus is at the water, and the VR/AR building is very close to the Anza Fishermans Park. As I mentioned the campus didn’t have car charger for guests. So when I finished watching the demos and I tried the glasses and participated in the portal demo as well, then I first visited a local bicycle shop RIDE by BikeHub. They had free tools outside for quick repairs. I chatted with the shop mechanic, mentioned the GCN video I saw recently about the 36” wheel MONSTER bike. Turns out the owner knows Conor of GCN.

Then I drove my car to the Magic Mountain Playground, because they had usual ChargePoint Level 2 chargers there. I had to pay an entrance fee and the charging costs money, but I still prefer to drive my car in EV mode. As an extra I did a little workout session at the outdoor fitness machine park inside the playground property. Then I walked along the Aardvark Beach back to the campus (about a kilometer walk).

Then I chatted with some like minded developers (I demoed my AR / 360 apps such as the AR Physics or the BWSS AR Map or the Recycling Trashcan website). I’m more of an ARCore / Google guy while one of the developers Seth Nuzum has experience with ARKit, Snap Spectacles AR glasses, Unity AR and other AR/VR projects. It’s always so great to interact with like minded people. It reminds me I need to explore ARKit and other frameworks and devices as well.

After all of that I watched more demos before I topped the day with a Body Combat demo of my own. I immersed myself into it and kind of started to sweat towards the end. When traveling I came and left through the San Mateo toll Bridge (the other choice was to drive towards the Pacheco pass and Casa de Fruta). On the way back home I stopped by the Tracy Target, left my car there to recharge again while replenishimg calories at the Golden Corral (about half a mile walk).

Laser Quest

In this quest the player has to slice red and blue cubes with a virtual lightsaber. This is the 2nd most athletic quest after body combat. I think similarly to body combat the red and blue colors here belong to the left and right arm, so you have to slice them with the color matched lightsaber.

Facebook Portal

This newer version of Facebook Portal is very easily detachable from the base. It has a three prong magnetic connection and it can also be rotated around its base. It has some built-in AI which is able to focus the camera area to the speaker and follow movement. That mechanism doesn’t have any moving parts, it’s software based, driven by AI. It’s also notable that on all Portal devices I saw factory built-in camera covers and there’s also hardware microphone switch-off too. Privacy is a primary citizen.

Ray Ban Smart Glasses

These Ray Ban Smart Glasses were comfortable and they could record video + audio and upload straight up to Facebook.

Body Combat Quest Preparation

The player is deep into the Les Mills Body Combat Quest boxing VR game. The white and left objects need to be strictly punched by the left and the right hand otherwise they don’t count. The shape and orientation of the targets determine if you have to jab, uppercut or hook. The bars need to be avoided by leaning.

Fishing Quest

The first player of the Quest Demos was an elderly gentleman. The fishing quest was a very good fit for him, you can do that sitting in a chair. The game seemed to be fun with multiple various fishing locations.

The Quest Arena

Just like with the old Oculus headsets you could see on the computer screen what the VR players see, the arena allowed us to experience what the players saw projected to a giant wall. The arena was equipped with a device in the corner which kept an eye on the player, and there were projectors on the top as well. There was a ring light showing where the player was supposed to stand. Very cool setup!
