Aurora Five

From Storsteinen (see Aurora Four), there are great views over Tromsøya and to Kvaløya. These pictures were taken between 16:57 and 17:03 on 23.01.2026. All are shot with a Nikon Z7II, Sigma Art 35mm, ISO 400, f/8 and 15 seconds of exposure time.

One afternoon, we took the Fjellheisen cable car up Storsteinen, from where you have a great view over Tromsøysund and the city itself. We got lucky again that day! These pictures were taken over the course of three minutes. All are shot with a Nikon Z7II, Sigma Art 35mm, ISO 400, f/8 and 15 seconds of exposure time.

Aurora Three

These images were shot between 22:47 and 22:50 local time on the 21st of January, 2026. They are exactly 30 seconds apart, since they were intended to be the start of a time lapse, which I later changed the setup for.

These images were shot between 22:40 and 22:46 local time on the 21st of January, 2026. They are set apart by ~30 seconds to one minute each.

Aurora One

These images show the first few shots I was able to take of the aurora from the apartment balcony. The images were shot between 17:15 and 19:30 local time on the 21st of January, 2026.

Tromsøysund

These images show the Tromsøysund from Tromsøbrua, shot on 23.01.2026 at 15:14. The first is shot towards the south-east, showing Storsteinen and clearly visible, the top station of the Fjellheisen cable car. The second is shot straight down Tromsøysund, showing the mainland at the left and Tromsøya with the city of Tromsø on the right. The third is shot towards south-west, showing the city of Tromsø.

Shredding flyers

On the 17th of November 2021, the [AfD flyers sent to the Flyerservice Hahn](/photography/2021-09-30-flyerservice-hahn/) were professionally shredded. First, they were transported from the facility where they'd been stored to the shredding facility. Then, the containers are emptied to the ground in the shredding facility. Afterwards, they are picked up with a front loader and stuffed into a typical blue 1.1m³ trash container. From the 1.1m³ containers, they are dumped into the shredding machine and afterwards compacted into blocks like the one shown in last picture. Those blocks get recycled in a paper plant and will most likely end up in recycling toilet paper or paper towels.

Flyerservice Hahn

During the election campaigns for the elections in Germany on 26th of September 2021, the German activist group “Zentrum Für Politische Schönheit” (“Center for Political Beauty“, abbreviated ZPS) got active once again. They offered to distribute election materials, mostly flyers to multiple chapters of the party “Alternative für Deutschland” (AfD) under the cover of a fictious company named [“Flyerservice Hahn”](https://www.flyerservice-hahn.de/). The AfD is a far-right party that is widely critisized and often called a right-wing extremist party. The AfD delivered about 72 tons of materials to the Flyerservice Hahn. As the ZPS told the customers of the Flyerservice on the Tuesday before the election, they unfortunately “couldn’t distribute the materials”. On September 30th, the ZPS invited to an “open house” where they presented about 30 tons of the 72 tons of campaign materials they got delivered by the AfD. All pictures in the following series are from this “open house” event.

Clouds in the Sky

East to North

These images are a sweep from East to North. You can see Venus as the brightest „line“ in the sky in the first picture (directly above the clouds on the left side of the image). In the last image, you can see [Ursa Major](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ursa_Major) in the top left and Polaris in the top right third.

Wind Turbines

The three wind turbines make excellent objects in a image as they have a distinct look from far away. Getting closer and with perspectives becoming more and more extreme, the images in this series make for very different vibes. The first three images are taken from below the turbine you can see in the last three images.

Berlin Botanical Garden

On a rainy sunday, [Isa](https://isabelmeyer.de) and I took our cameras and went to the botanical garden in Dahlem. It was a great opportunity for me to start working with my new Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 lens — while I have worked with the model before, now I own it myself. The best results (by my judgement) are found in this gallery. I’m sure that this wasn’t my last visit to the botanical garden as we only visited about two thirds of the indoor space which itself is about a tenth of the space.

Trails of Light

I was using a Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 DX lens for those pictures as I’m currently working at finding out which focal lengths I’m using most often. At the same time, this was a nice opportunity to work with my new GorillaPod and get used to its operation. The pictures you’re seeing here are almost all shot with the pod on the exact same spot, just with different rotations. The two exceptions are the pictures of the autobahn which were shot with the camera resting on a guardrail.

A morning in Bodman

On a calm monday morning, Isa and I were up pretty early. We decided to spend a bit of time at the Lake of Constance, in Bodman. The pictures of this series were all taken between 4:15 and 5:00 in the morning. As the day started to brighten, birds were getting active.

A young foal

We were able to take some photos of a just two week old foal that lives with my parents’ neighbours. I was happy to work with [Isa](https://isabelmeyer.de) who got me started with some good hints. I was also not working with one of my regular lenses here, but with a Nikkor 70-200mm which enabled me to keep my distance from the horses. Isa worked with a Sigma Art 135mm lens. This enabled us to keep our distance to the horses as young foals are well protected. In some of the following four pictures, you can see the interaction between the horses and our neighbours dog. While they are used to her, she will still get chased away if she gets too close to the foal.
