Her mom struggles to make ends meet. Leah has been sleeping on the floor of a relative’s house. She lives too close to school for the bus yet walks just under a mile to get there. Leah constantly misses school when it rains because she doesn’t have a rain jacket or umbrella.

Her school social worker requested our help to buy a rain jacket and umbrella but mentioned how a bicycle would make Leah’s life much easier. The social worker

has been trying to get help through bike programs, as well as homeless resources

and DSS, but has been unsuccessful because of waitlists.

For just a little over $200, the foundation will give this child who has only known hardship a brand new rain jacket, umbrella, rain boots, and … yes, a new bicycle.

We also added a bike helmet and basket for Leah to carry her school supplies.

KETONE STRIPS FOR DIABETES https://ncfpsc.org/ketone-strips-for-diabetes/ https://ncfpsc.org/ketone-strips-for-diabetes/#respond Tue, 23 Jan 2024 21:56:39 +0000 https://ncfpsc.org/?p=3412 7th grader, Lainey, has diabetes. She’s had a couple scary moments at school when her blood glucose got too high.

Ketone stripes are used to check blood glucose. The school’s budget does not allow them to keep strips on hand. They rely on parents to provide the strips.

Lainey’s family, in and out of homeless shelters, does not have money for strips. If Lainey’s glucose levels are too high, it can become a matter of life and death.

Lainey’s school nurse reached out to the Foundation. We provided enough ketone strips to last the rest of the school year and gave Lainey – and everyone who cares for her – peace of mind.

SAXOPHONE IS DREAM COME TRUE https://ncfpsc.org/saxophone-is-dream-come-true/ https://ncfpsc.org/saxophone-is-dream-come-true/#respond Thu, 18 Jan 2024 21:12:08 +0000 https://ncfpsc.org/?p=3409 Rachel (name changed) is a 6th grader in his school who loves band. She plays Saxophone and has done quite well. Because Rachel uses a school-owned saxophone, she is allowed to take it home only on a rare occasion. Rachel dreams of having a Saxophone to call her own so she can play at home, nights, weekends – whenever she likes.

Rachel is being raised by her grandmother who lives off her $1,100 a month social security check. (Their rent is $875 monthly.) Grandma works as a home health aid as she can but bad health limits her, and now her car is broken down.

Rachel’s caring grandmother has tried saving money for a Saxophone for Rachel – but something always comes up and the money is never there.

Her School Social Worker called staff to say, “I couldn’t believe my eyes when I discovered this Foundation and read you help with band instruments. There’s no one I’ve found who does that.”

A few days later, Rachel’s dream came true when a brand new saxophone that she can call her very own was delivered to her School Social Worker who presented it to her.

“Christmas showed up all over again.” ~School Social Worker

Gunshot Wound and Healing for His Arms https://ncfpsc.org/gunshot-wound-and-healing-for-his-arms/ https://ncfpsc.org/gunshot-wound-and-healing-for-his-arms/#respond Wed, 04 Oct 2023 16:31:17 +0000 https://ncfpsc.org/?p=3312

A gunshot wound put *Amari in a wheelchair. He does his best school work and communication on a tablet, but holding the tablet tires his weak arms. Amari needed a wheelchair mount for his tablet that will hold his school tablet for him – but his single mom of four cannot afford it. This Foundation paid for the mount so his tired little arms can heal and strengthen. Amari’s enjoys learning so much more now.

Hearing Aids Gives New Life to Second Grader https://ncfpsc.org/hearing-aids-gives-new-life-to-second-grader/ https://ncfpsc.org/hearing-aids-gives-new-life-to-second-grader/#respond Tue, 03 Oct 2023 17:42:31 +0000 https://ncfpsc.org/?p=3292

Rosie faced significant challenges in school due to her severe hearing loss in both ears. Sadly, her learning level was below that of a Kindergartener, and she failed second grade as a result. Her undocumented parents were unable to afford the expensive hearing aids that Rosie desperately needed to thrive in the classroom. That’s where our Foundation stepped in. We were able to provide Rosie with the hearing aids she requires to learn and succeed.

Rosie has been given a new lease on life and the opportunity to reach her full potential.

60 Backpacks Stolen, 60 Replaced https://ncfpsc.org/60-backpacks-stolen-60-replaced/ https://ncfpsc.org/60-backpacks-stolen-60-replaced/#respond Fri, 02 Dec 2022 18:15:14 +0000 https://ncpublicschoolfoundation.org/?p=2102 NCFPSC board members, along with staff from the NC Association of Educators, literally saved the day for needy children who were depending on Raleigh’s Hands on Mission to provide them with a free backpack filled with school supplies. When nearly 65 backpacks were stolen from the mission, children who were impacted had to attend school for three days with their school supplies in plastic bags, paper bags, or nothing at all. Thankfully, one of NCFPSC’s board members saw an opportunity for the Foundation to serve out its purpose in helping some of North Carolina’s public school children by replacing the stolen backpacks and school supplies!

Bilateral Ankle/Foot Orthotics For Carlos https://ncfpsc.org/bilateral-ankle-foot-orthotics-for-carlos/ https://ncfpsc.org/bilateral-ankle-foot-orthotics-for-carlos/#respond Mon, 15 Nov 2021 18:29:58 +0000 https://ncpublicschoolfoundation.org/?p=196 Sixth-grader, “Carlos,” recently moved to North Carolina from Mexico. Carlos has Cerebral Palsy. His feet point downward and are bent inward which prevents him from walking unaided. Carlos’ family struggles financially and do not have the means to purchase equipment he needs. To get to school, Carlos must be transported in a manual wheelchair – and it is in that wheelchair he must stay throughout the school day, even when his class goes outdoors for recreation.

Carlos’ public school physical therapist learned about this foundation while searching for help. She knows if Carlos were to be fitted with just the right orthotics, he can walk independently, his confidence will grow in the classroom, and his educational experience will be impacted significantly.

We received the request to help Carlos – and we responded. We are happy to report Carlos is being fitted for bilateral ankle and foot orthotics. Carlos will start 7th grade WALKING into classroom because this foundation exists. Thank you for partnering with us to give Carlos’ the opportunities and love he deserves.

His school nurse contacted us and shared that, not only had Taylor’s overall academic performance suffered in those 10 days, but his peer relationships were also impacted in a negative way. We were able to pay for Taylor’s medications that same day.
