Task Assignment Toolkit

Published on 08/22/2025

Task assignment is a key area affecting employees’ career trajectories, but managers often do not intentionally think about how they go about assigning tasks. When unexamined, subtle biases can slip into these processes negatively impacting an employee’s career development. For example, research shows that women and members of other underrepresented groups are more often channeled into “execution” or project management roles and are less likely to receive high-value, high-visibility, or stretch assignments.

These kinds of patterns mean some employees have fewer opportunities to creatively contribute, learn, innovate, and shine. These patterns can also lead to low job satisfaction and higher turnover rates for these employees. The following tips will help ensure that opportunities are open to a wider range of team members,  ultimately fostering more productive and thriving teams.
