Winner of the Food Planet Prize 2025, NitroCapt, represented by Gustaf Forsberg, CEO and Founder, Björn Lindh, Strategy Director, and Adam Rosenholm, CFO, posing with the winner’s diploma together with the Co-Chairs of the Food Planet Prize jury: Johan Rockström (left), Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, and Magnus Nilsson (right), Michelin Star Chef, organic apple farmer and Director-General of the Curt Bergfors Foundation.

NitroCapt received the world’s biggest environmental award on June 13 in Stockholm, Sweden, for their exceptional contributions and potential to disrupt the global nitrogen fertilizer industry. Here is the jury’s motivation:

“Adequate amounts of nutritious food for all people in the world can only be provided through a sustainable use of land, water, and plant nutrients. The global food system is the world’s largest cause for breaching the nutrient planetary boundary through inequitable overuse of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers. Furthermore, nitrogen fertilizers are produced through energy-intensive processes that consume fossil fuels and emit large amounts of greenhouse gases.

Through a major innovation, nitrogen fertilizer can now be produced by splitting nitrogen from the air with plasma technology simply needing green electricity as input.

This technology reduces the use of energy drastically, can be produced locally in smaller units, and avoids fossil-fuels entirely, producing a nitrate fertilizer that can improve soil health and be used sustainably by farmers across the world.”

The 2025 Food Planet Prize winner was awarded 2 million dollars in funding.

Gustaf Forsberg, CEO and Founder of NitroCapt, commented:

“NitroCapt’s mission is to decarbonize the nitrogen fertilizer industry. The current fossil-based process has reached its end point. We can also contribute to increased food production in areas that today have difficulties producing sufficient amounts. We are just about to finalize our industrial-scale pilot, and we have fertilizer in the field, but we’re still not at the scale where we want to be.

This Prize will be very important for us to bring our technology to the stage where we can start making a difference.”

Nitrogen Fertilizer

NitroCapt is proud to launch Sweden’s first domestic production of mineral nitrogen fertilizer in almost two decades.

The climate-friendly production of our SUNIFER® fertilizer needs no remotely produced feedstocks. Therefore, this marks more than a technological breakthrough — it’s a bold step towards national food security, independence from volatile global supply chains, and a more resilient Europe.

Today, the EU still imports around 30% of mineral fertilizers from Russia and the European production of nitrogen fertilizer is totally dependent on imports of remotely produced fossil gas. Sweden, until now, relies entirely on imports of mineral nitrogen fertilizer, making us vulnerable in geopolitically unstable situations.

NitroCapt’s Founder and CEO, Gustaf Forsberg—himself a farmer—puts it plainly:

“Nitrogen fertilizer isn’t just a commodity—it’s a necessity for about 50% of all food we grow. Without a secure supply, we can’t secure our harvests and with that the possibility to feed our population.”

This achievement is a testament to the hard work of our team — and the beginning of a greener, more self-reliant path forward for Sweden, Europe and beyond.

The grocery retailer Axfood, food producer Dafgårds, and innovation company NitroCapt have signed an agreement to create a sustainable supply chain from farm to store. The collaboration involves Axfood and Dafgårds investing in reducing the carbon footprint of grain production at the agricultural stage by using NitroCapt’s green nitrogen fertilizer. The grain will be used to produce flour sufficient for one million loaves of bread, with a significantly lower climate impact.

Food accounts for about one-third of global climate-impacting emissions, and one of the largest sources of emissions in agriculture is nitrogen fertilizer. Axfood and Dafgårds are committed to contributing to fossil-free agriculture in the long term. By using NitroCapt’s green fertilizer, farming with reduced emissions becomes possible, enabling Axfood and Dafgårds to offer products with a smaller environmental footprint. The collaboration also strengthens Sweden’s food security by initiating domestic fertilizer production.

The fertilizer is entirely independent of imported raw materials, as it only uses air and renewable energy in the nitrogen fixation process. NitroCapt has developed a groundbreaking technology that eliminates the need for fossil fuels in nitrogen fertilizer production, drastically reducing total emissions. The process is patented.

“Our innovative technology enables a dramatic reduction in agricultural emissions. We look forward to collaborating with Axfood and Dafgårds, who will play a central role in the supply chain by ensuring that this impact reaches all the way from farmer to store, providing consumers with more sustainable choices,” says Gustaf Forsberg, CEO and co-founder of NitroCapt.

The grain grown with the green nitrogen fertilizer will be used to produce flour sufficient for around one million loaves of bread, which Dafgårds will bake at its bakery in Källby and sell in Axfood stores.

“With fertilizer produced using renewable energy, fossil emissions in agriculture can be reduced. At Axfood, we aim to support and scale up sustainable initiatives so they can reach store shelves and consumers. This is crucial for creating a more sustainable food system with lower climate impact,” says Åsa Domeij, Head of Sustainability at Axfood.

“We are proud to take another step toward a sustainable supply chain from raw materials to customers, together with our partners. By using fertilizer produced with renewable energy, we can reduce the climate impact of grain production already at the agricultural stage, strengthening our commitment to baking bread from Swedish raw materials with a natural connection to sustainability. Proximity to both raw materials and customers is crucial, and this collaboration shows how we can manage resources to meet the challenges of the future,” says David Eriksson, Business Area Manager for Bread and Baked Goods at Dafgårds.

NitroCapt plans to have its first full-scale production facility operational by 2027, capable of supplying up to 80,000 hectares of farmland with green nitrogen fertilizer. A pilot facility has been in operation in Uppsala since May 2024.

Felleskjøpet

The Uppsala-based Agtech company NitroCapt has signed its first pre-order agreement with the Norwegian farmers’ cooperative Felleskjøpet Agri. They have ordered a batch worth 10 million SEK of NitroCapt’s green nitrogen fertilizer, SUNIFER®, marking an important milestone for the company. NitroCapt’s groundbreaking process for electrifying nitrogen fertilizer production has the potential to drastically reduce global CO2 emissions from agriculture, while also significantly lowering production costs.
NitroCapt has developed a technology that eliminates the need for fossil fuels in nitrogen fertilizer production, a process that has traditionally contributed to significant CO2 emissions. With their patented process, emissions are drastically reduced.

  • Felleskjøpet has a strong agenda to reduce greenhouse gases, and our technology has the potential to become superior in terms of energy efficiency, which in turn also impacts production cost and results in nitrate, a high-quality fertilizer with significant benefits for both agriculture and the environment. We look forward to strengthening our partnership in the coming years,” says Gustaf Forsberg, CEO of NitroCapt.

Felleskjøpet has identified nitrogen fertilizer as one of the major sources of scope 3 emissions within their operations and agriculture in general.

  • “We aim to enhance our sustainable offering with fertilizers that have low greenhouse gas emissions and also promote good agronomy. The agreement with NitroCapt is an important step in this effort. Their technology has the potential to make nitrogen fertilizer both cost-effective and significantly reduce emissions. We know and trust Gustaf Forsberg from his involvement in the development of Thermo Seed, a technology used for combating fungal diseases in seed, which we use successfully today. We are eager to follow NitroCapt’s development closely,” says Ragnar Dæhli, business area manager at Felleskjøpet Agri.

NitroCapt recently inaugurated its pilot plant in Uppsala and aims to build its first full-scale plant by 2027. With a single unit, the company will be able to supply nitrogen fertilizer with low CO2 emissions for up to 80,000 hectares, using only fossil-free electricity. NitroCapt, a pioneering Swedish Agtech company founded in 2016, and VIVESCIA, a leading French agricultural cooperative, are excited to announce a strategic partnership aimed at transforming the fertilizer industry and advancing sustainable agriculture. The goal is to build production in Grand Est region, France of green nitrogen fertilizers for 750,000 hectares, a surface corresponding to 1/3 of all farmland in Sweden.

This partnership is fully in line with VIVESCIA Group’s CSR policy, LINK, and its regenerative, low-carbon agriculture programme, TRANSITIONS. It aims to develop the production of low-carbon fertiliser thanks to SUNIFIX®, an exclusive process developed by NitroCapt based on fixing atmospheric nitrogen. This innovative technology enables the production of sustainable fertiliser exclusively from renewable energies, which can help to improve the agronomic and economic performance of farming practices while contributing to the transition to sustainable and resilience food systems.

The President of VIVESCIA Group, Christoph Büren, said: “Many initiatives have already been implemented in terms of decarbonisation, in particular with the TRANSITIONS programme. We need to keep moving forward in this direction. Although practices are starting to change in terms of fertiliser use, we need to go further and envisage partnerships for the production of more resilient nitrogen fertiliser. Testing new solutions – pioneering – is central to our purpose. We are definitively committed to an approach that is devoted to progress for the entire industry and our region.”

Gustaf Forsberg, CEO of NitroCapt, explains: “Nitrogen fertilisers are crucial to maintaining yields, but they are also a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. Nowadays, we have to reconcile the issue of decarbonisation with that of efficiency and food autonomy. Our technology meets these three objectives by enabling the development of low-carbon, efficient nitrogen fertiliser that can be produced directly by cooperatives without the need to import any raw materials.”

A first pilot phase is currently being deployed in Sweden to consolidate the process before a demonstration plant is built in the Champagne Ardennes region of France.
Ultimately, if the scale-up and agronomic trials are successful, the objective is to build plants that will produce competitive, decarbonised fertiliser in the north-east of France. These plants will be able to produce enough nitrogen fertiliser to cover the needs of farmers on at least 750,000 ha of farmland. The first plants are expected to be commissioned in 2028.

Discover the future of agriculture with our Founder and CEO Gustaf Forsberg, as he narrates the inception of NitroCapt and the exciting vision that drives us forward.

Founder and CEO Gustaf Forsberg
Founder and CEO Gustaf Forsberg

Agriculture is the basis for human civilization and we need to strengthen its role. My passion is to combine technology and biology to make agriculture both highly-productive and sustainable. Nitrogen fertilizers are an essential component for producing enough food for the world’s population, but today’s production has significant environmental drawbacks. The development of novel nitrogen fertilizer processes and fertilizer field management are therefore of essence to being able to achieve both productivity and sustainability”, says Gustaf Forsberg.

Founding journey

Gustaf Forsberg’s farming roots sparked a passion for innovation. It led him to a double Masters in engineering physics and agronomy, and a PhD in a project that later became the successful ThermoSeed® technology. Here Gustaf had key roles in R&D, product development and international marketing and sales. He left his employment in 2016 and started NitroCapt, based on a new idea of how to achieve a more efficient and climate-friendly method for nitrogen fixation. Partnering with Peter Baeling, a brilliant retired chemical engineer and former colleague from Lantmännen R&D, together they developed the SUNIFIX® process concept.

After an inventory of disciplines necessary to realize the technology was made, an intense scouting for the right competences among European researchers followed, which led to the creation of a dedicated research consortium together with several world-leading professors and their teams. With two patent applications filed 2020/21 and support from InnoEnergy, the team wrote NitroCapt’s first business plan and succeeded to get approximately EUR 3m in grants and investor funding in early 2022.

Vision of NitroCapt

NitroCapt’s vision is “Decarbonizing plant nutrition to produce the world’s most environmentally and economically sustainable nitrogen fertilizer”.

The goal is to ensure that highly-productive agricultural practices go hand in hand with a sound and thriving environment in a number of ways:

  •  NitroCapt’s electrification of nitrogen fixation with a close to zero-emission production process removes the dependency of fossil-fuel based energy feedstocks and, which today are significant contributors to the greenhouse effect and a source of cross-border political strife.
  • The energy efficiency of the SUNIFIX® technology will make it the most economically attractive technology thus accelerating the decarbonization of the nitrogen fertilizer industry.
  • NitroCapt’s SUNIFER® nitrate fertilizer with its positive influence on soil fertility (contrary to the most common fertilizers that acidify soils) and advantages for precision farming thanks to a very high nutrient efficiency, unlocks substantial potential for reducing soil-related GHG emissions.
  • NitroCapt’s modular size, already on a moderate scale, makes an attractive, new, distributed business model for creating resilient fertilizer production cost effectively and close to end-users, where everything needed is available locally. This is a great advantage in a world where there are increasing risks for supply shortages due to various kinds of remote trade disturbances.

The future of Agriculture

Food industry actors are highly concerned and engaged in:

  • The importance of the decarbonization coupled with the worries about the high cost of the green fertilizers.
  • The dependency of remotely produced fossil gas for production, where one country alone can create urgent shortages threatening food production.

“NitroCapt is addressing all of these concerns. As we speak with our future customers, this is perfectly understood and embraced, as well among actors in Europe as in other parts of the world. We have also encountered several organizations that see our technology as a solution for increasing food production in developing countries with poor infrastructure but with good potential for renewable electricity”, says Gustaf.

“It is incredibly motivating to develop solutions to so many important global challenges all at the same time. I’m very proud of the milestones we are achieving together on this journey every day. It fills my life with meaning that we can help our children by doing what we can to give them a better world”, continues Gustaf. “And I am enormously proud and impressed by our team and all of our partners making this happen”.
