The Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) launches the eduroam service. For this, a memorandum of understanding has been signed between the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal and Nepal Research and Education Network (NREN). With this agreement in place, individuals at the airport have access to the eduroam network.

यो समझदारी सँगै चित्लाब स्थीत विश्वविद्यालयका विद्यार्थी तथा शिक्षकहरुले विश्वका अन्य विश्वविद्यालयहरु सँग हुने वैज्ञानिक सहकार्यलाई थप मजबुत वनाउन सहयोग पुग्नेछ । यसका साथै NREN ले विश्वका अन्य अनुसन्धान तथा शैक्षिक सञ्जाल प्रदायक संस्थाहरुको सहकार्यमा नेपालका प्राज्ञिक संस्थाहरुकोशैक्षिक तथा वैज्ञानिक कृयाकलापलाई सरल बनाउन प्रदान गरिरहेका अन्य सेवाहरु जस्तै इडियुरोम, सुपर कम्प्युटर पहँुच, विश्वविद्यालयको क्याम्पस नेटवर्क स्तरोन्नती, जस्ता क्षेत्रहरुमा NREN ले आवश्यक सहयोग गर्नेछ ।

सन् २०१० देखि नेपालमा जोडिएको अनुसन्धान तथा शैक्षिक सञ्जाल (ट्रान्स युरोसीया इन्फरमेसन नेटवर्क) मा हालसम्म नेपालका ३० भन्दा वढि शैक्षिक तथा अनुसन्धान सँग सम्वन्धीत संस्थाहरु आवद्ध भएका छन्। यस आवद्धताले नेपालका प्राज्ञिक संस्थाहरु विच तिव्र गतिको कम्प्युटरमा आधारित नेटवर्क  निर्माण भइरहेको साथै यो राष्ट्रिय सञ्जाललाई विश्वविद्यालयहरुले आफुलाई आवश्यक पर्ने वैज्ञानिक रिसोर्सहरु संयुत रुपमा खरिद गरि यस नेटवर्क मार्फत पहँुच गर्न सक्नेछन्जसले गर्दा हाल देखिरहेको वैज्ञानिक रिसोर्सहरु खरिदको दोहोरोपनमा उल्लेख्य सुधार ल्याउन सक्ने देखिन्छ जसले गर्दा विश्वविद्यालयहरुको खर्च व्यवस्थापनमा मद्यत पुग्नेछ । समझदारी पत्र हस्ताक्षरकै क्रममा मदन भण्डारी विश्वविद्यालयले अभियानकै रुपमा सुरु गरेको आर्थीक सहयोग कोषमा ल्च्भ्ल् का सदस्यहरुले स्वतस्फुर्त रुपमा संकलन गर्नुभएको रु १ लाख १ हजार रुपैया साथै अमेरिका स्थीत Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC) वाट NREN को समन्वयमा प्राप्त नेटवर्क स्वीच विश्वविद्यालयका अध्यक्ष लाई हस्तान्तरण गरिएको थियो ।

विश्वविद्यालय, वैज्ञानिक अनुसन्धान सम्वन्धी संस्था तथा उच्च शिक्षामा संलग्न शिक्षक तथा विद्यार्थीहरु विच एक शैक्षिक संस्था बाट अर्को शैक्षिक संस्थामा पुग्दा आफ्नै शैक्षिक संस्थाको युजरनेम र पासवर्डवाट इन्टरनेटको पहुँच स्थापीत हुने eduroam सेवा हाल १०० वटा देशहरुका विश्वविद्यालय तथा अन्य शैक्षिक संस्थाहरुमा सञ्चालमा आइसकेको छ । यस सेवालाई नेपालमा विस्तार र प्रवर्दन गर्ने काम नेपाल रिसर्च एण्ड एजुकेसन नेटवर्क(NREN) नामक संस्थाले निःशुल्क रुपमा गर्दै आएको छ । साथै यस संस्था नेपालका विश्वविद्यालय तथा वैज्ञानिक अनुसन्धानमा संलग्न संस्थाहरुलाई एक आपसमा जोडेर वैज्ञानिक अनुसन्धान तथा सहकार्यको वातावरण वनाउन प्रयासरत रहेको छ । हाल यस संस्थाले उपलव्ध गराएको अनुसन्धान तथा शैक्षिक सञ्जालमा नेपालका आठ वटा विश्वविद्यालय सहित ३० वटा शैक्षिक तथा अुसन्धानमा संलग्न संस्थाहरु जोडिइसकेका छन् ।

यसअघिनै विर अस्पताल विश्वव्यापी अनुसन्धान तथा शैक्षिक सञ्जालमा आवद्द भइसकेको छ । यसै नेटवर्कको सहयोग स्वरुप न्युक्लिएर मेडिसिनका क्षेत्रमा केहि सहकार्यहरु हाल जारी रहेको साथै Asi@Connect को सहयोगमा भिडियो कन्फ्रेन्सीङ उपकरणहरु समेत न्युक्लिएर मेडिसिन विभागले प्राप्त गरिसकेको छ ।

Under this agreement, NREN will extend its expertise and resources to collaborate with Pokhara University. Together, they will work towards establishing advanced computational networks, enabling seamless access to a wealth of knowledge for students, researchers, and educational institutions.

The Nepal Research and Education Network (NREN) has played a pivotal role in deploying the National Roaming Operator (NRO) for Nepal, assisting institutions in implementing the Eduroam service. Eduroam is a secure, ubiquitous roaming access service utilized by the global research and education community, with hundreds of thousands of wireless access points sharing a common SSID. Eduroam simplifies network access for educators, researchers, and students from an institution, ensuring they have a secure and easy-to-use service when visiting another institution, whether domestic or international. During visits to other institutions, user authentication is performed securely by the individual’s home institution, safeguarding their username and password from disclosure to the visited institution. Users utilize the same credentials they would when accessing their home institution’s network locally. Authorization to access the internet and other resources is managed by the visited institution, ensuring that security and privacy are maintained.

Nepal Research and Education Network (NREN) hosted the 55th Asia Pacific Advanced Network Meeting (APAN55) in Kathmandu from March 13-17, 2023. The first-ever APAN meeting in Nepal was participated more than 450 participants from various sectors, including researchers, scientists, policymakers, network professionals, telehealth practitioners, and experts from the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

The five-day meeting was inaugurated by Mrs. Rekha Sharma, honorable Minister of Communication and Information Technology, who emphasized the need for advanced networks and digital technologies in today’s digitalized world. The minister also highlighted the importance of research for the country and the role of research and education networks. She spoke about the Digital Nepal Framework through which Nepal’s government aims to harness the benefits of ICTs for major development and service sectors.

The keynote theme for APAN55 was the intersection of climate change impacts and technology, with a focus on the potential for advanced networks to address these challenges. The first opening keynote was presented by Dr. Arun Bhakta Shrestha of ICIMOD, who emphasized the need for adaptation and resilience building in the face of climate change impacts in the Hindu Kush Himalaya region. Ms. Purnima Shrestha, a renowned mountaineer who has scaled 7 of the world’s 14 eight-thousanders, provided a mountaineer’s perspective on the current climate change context in the Himalayas. The closing keynote speeches were given by Dr. Erik Huizer, CEO of GÉANT, the pan-European data network for the research and education community and by Dr. Franz A. de Leon, Director of Advanced Science and Technology Institute. Dr. Huizer placed emphasis on fostering community spirit, promoting service, and encouraging innovation in the global research and education network communities. He stressed the importance of adhering to the principles of doing good, doing right, and doing better. On the other hand, Dr. de Leon’s keynote focused on utilizing science, technology, and innovation to strengthen the Philippines’ ability to withstand the effects of climate change.

Over the course of five days, a total of 79 sessions were conducted, covering a wide range of  topics from different working groups such as Cloud, Medical, IoT, Network Security, Disaster Mitigation, AI-driven Networks, Identity and Access Management, etc. Additionally, there were several important training and sharing sessions, such as RPKI and MANRS, information centric networking, joining eduGAIN, network engineering workshop, NREN’s activities during the Pandemic, HPC in Asia Pacific, etc., which provided valuable insights and updates to the participants.

The APAN55 conference marked a momentous success after a few years of hiatus in physical meetings. As the local host, the NREN evaluated that the event rekindled the energy within the APAN communities and unveiled diverse opportunities for future activities and collaborations. The meeting not only tracked the current progress of various working groups but also fostered lively discussions on emerging technologies. Importantly, the APAN55 meeting largely supported the visibility of NREN and its efforts in promoting research and education activities in the country. Notable local attendees included high-level representation from the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Nepal Telecommunication Authority, Nepal Telecom, Nepal Academy of Science and Technology, and leaders from various universities.
