Apr 26 2026 : Make your own swag! Introduction to Sublimation Transfer

classes  Comments Off on Apr 26 2026 : Make your own swag! Introduction to Sublimation Transfer
Mar 202026

Learn how to take a digital image and add it to shirts, mugs, bookmarks, magnets and more. Perfect for custom swag and gifts.

Sublimation Transfer is the process of using a special ink that can be transferred from paper onto objects such as shirts, caps, mugs, bookmarks, magnets and more! This opens up the possibility of taking any digital picture and adding it on to swag to make your own customized gifts and apparel.

In this class, we will go over how sublimation transfer works as well as some other alternative methods used for transferring digital images onto physical objects. We’ll go over key differences and pros and cons of each. Then we’ll have our hands-on part of the class where we will use the printer to prepare our digital images for transfer, followed by using the heat press safely to transfer the images you bring to an object of your choice. No previous experience is required!

Please be ready to start at 1pm! We find that you will need this time to get through the whole class. Our classes tend to sell out about a week in advance so if you’re interested, you may want to sign up early.

Supplies:

Bring artwork/images ahead of time (Email to [email protected] or bring a USB)

We have laptops available as well

Size of artwork:

Cap: 6″ x 7″

Shirt: 8” x 10.5” or landscape 10.5” x 8”

Mug: 8.5″x 3.8″

Magnet Holder: 3″ x 3″

Bookmarks: 1.5″ x 6″

Included in the class is a White Shirt, White Cap or Mug and if you’d like, additional magnet holder and bookmark. All items are white as sublimation works best on light colored objects.

This class will be taught by Resistor member Jack Poon.

As with all NYC Resistor events, this class is 18+ and governed by our Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct, as well as accessibility information, can be found at www.nycresistor.com/participate/. We’re a group of DIYers who love fixing things!

Repair Cafe NYC organizes events where we collectively diagnose and fix broken objects, share skills, and build intergenerational, community-based knowledge. We’re interested in helping each other gain confidence in the act of repair to prevent our belongings from going to the landfill, and thinking critically about where our things come from.

People bring a wide variety of items to events, including lamps, chairs, mugs/plates, clothes and more. Think small, portable items (no large appliances, bicycles or couches).

When: Saturday April 4th, 2pm-5pm
Where: NYC Resistor, 87 3rd Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11217

At check out you will be asked these questions:

  • What’s broken in your life that you want to repair? Describe it and how it is broken.
  • Does your repair require specific tools or parts? Do you have them?
  • Are you interested in helping others repair, or doing a repair related show-and-tell? (e.g. showing off a speciality tool, demonstrating a technique, walking people through a recent repair)

Questions? Email us at [email protected]

A coloring and snacks party celebrating Squiggle Doodles: Adult Sticker Coloring Book for Bored, Anxious, and Immature Grownups.

Forget being a functional member of society for two hours and join us for a coloring party celebrating the release of Squiggle Doodles: Adult Sticker Coloring Book for Bored, Anxious, and Immature Grownups. It’s exactly what it sounds like: a room full of overly-educated people trying to stay inside the lines while questioning their life choices. Join us to color, stick, and peel your stress away.

Come hang out and draw with us!

Or… briefly swing by, purchase your own copy, and anti-socially color quietly by yourself in your apartment later. Either way, it’s low-effort, low-tech and high-reward.

Also, did we mention there will be snacks?

All levels welcome. Experience coloring is not necessary.

Harness the power of an Epilog 60 Watt Laser! In this class you’ll learn everything you need.

Harness the power of an Epilog 60 Watt Laser! In this class you’ll learn everything you need to know to make the ideas in your head become a reality with a laser.

In this three hour class, you will learn:

  • How to set up a file for cutting on the laser cutter in Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator.
  • Laser cutter safety including materials testing.
  • Laser cutter operation including configuration, cuts and raster etching in common materials like wood, acrylic, cardboard and others.

At the end of class, you will go home with:

  • One laser cut project, either the class default or a simple one of your own design (see below for details)
  • Resistor Laser Certification, enabling you to use our laser on Craft Nights.

Please bring the following to class:

A laptop with either Inkscape (free: download here: https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.2.1/) or Adobe Illustrator installed.

A USB jump drive

The following items are optional if you’d like to try cutting a simple custom design. If your file ends up being too complicated, we may have you do the class default project first, just to learn the laser in the time allotted – but we’ll definitely help you with your more complex cut at a free Craft Night in future!

  • An SVG vector file of a simple shape you’d like to cut for your first cut.
  • A piece of 1/8 inch or thinner wood, acrylic or cardboard you’d like to cut. If you can’t bring your own material, small pieces will be made available, or larger pieces for purchase on site.

Please be on time for the start of class! If you’re late you will miss your slot.
