Parks | The FlipOut Bed System https://outsidevan.com/parks-the-flipout-bed-system/ https://outsidevan.com/parks-the-flipout-bed-system/#respond Wed, 18 Sep 2024 14:28:45 +0000 https://tempwebsitehost.net/?p=1226

Designing a layout for a vehicle like Parks is a balancing act. Our design philosophy prioritizes open layouts that create a living space that is just as much comfortable as it is functional. We want our vehicles to adapt to our customers rather than our customers adapt to a cramped and restrictive layout.

Parks features our discreet FlipOut bed panel system which utilizes a multi-purpose panel system embedded into the benches to create an expansive bed that can easily be deployed and stowed. When deployed, the bed creates a sleeping area roughly 74”x70” and is the perfect size for two people. The bed also sits lower than most van beds, which makes accessorily much easier for those who have mobility issues, children, or those who simply want a bed platform closer to the ground.

To deploy the FlipOut bed, remove the cushion from the driver’s side bench. There are three panels attached with hinges to the bench. Grab each panel and flip individually until all three panels are flipped, bridging the walkway. We suggest flipping the panel closest to the Outback Washroom first, and working your way to the front of Parks. When all three panels are flipped, replace and rearrange the bench cushions to create a sleeping area.

WHAT EXACTLY IS A RIP KIT?

The Ride Improvement Package, or RIP Kit by Agile Offroad is a series of components that are added to or replace the stock suspension system on a van’s chassis. When converting a stock van into an Outside Van, a sizeable amount of weight is added and distributed throughout the van, and the RIP Kits primary purpose is to help balance the increased weight so that driving performance is not affected, and even improved. A lot of people view the RIP Kit as an off-road add-on, and it surely does help with off-road performance, but the RIP Kit shines with every day driving as well.

When driving a van equipped with a RIP Kit, you will notice much smoother turning and cornering at speed, much less bottoming out when going over rough terrain, and an overall smoother driving experience.

Agile Offroad’s RIP Kit is customized by your adventure van model but often includes:

    • Custom Rate Rear Leaf Springs
    • Front Coilovers
    • AO MAX Auxiliary Front Shock Mount Kit
    • (2) AO Fox 2.0 Auxiliary Front Shocks
    • (2) AO Fox 2.5 Rear Shocks
    • (4) Agile Hub-Centric Wheel Spacers & Stud Conversion Kit
    • Complete Installation Hardware Kit

Performance Meets Affordability: The RIP Kit Advantage

Agile Offroad’s RIP kit represents a holistic approach to suspension design. This comprehensive system enhances off-road capability without compromising on-road driving experience, with an increased spring rate tailored specifically for heavy adventure vans.

Integrating coil overs in the front struts improves spring rate and lift, while a custom leaf pack in the rear provides unmatched stability. Every component of the RIP kit is meticulously crafted to elevate the driving experience.

Behind the Walls | The Outside Van Difference https://outsidevan.com/the-outside-van-difference/ https://outsidevan.com/the-outside-van-difference/#respond Wed, 01 May 2024 14:08:46 +0000 https://tempwebsitehost.net/?p=1414

A house is only as strong as its foundation, and this is especially true for an adventure vehicle like an Outside Van. However, unlike a normal house, we need to account for constant movement and road safety when building and installing our conversions.

When we get bare van chassis from the factory, there is a substantial amount of work needed to prepare the chassis to accept a van conversion that is durable, comfortable, and free from rattles and damage from adventurous use. This includes adding an infrastructure for all the conversion components to attach to, insulation, wiring, and incorporating specialized building techniques. In this article we will go over what we do behind the walls to get a van ready and up to the standards of an Outside Van.

INFRASTRUCTURE

On every van, the first component we add in a reinforced infrastructure that covers the walls and ceiling. Adding infrastructure for interior components to be secured to is a crucial step in safety and durability in every vehicle conversion.

Our infrastructure consists of 16 and 14-gauge galvanized steel panels that are strategically attached onto the bare chassis. We use existing mounting points to minimize permanent modification to the chassis, and place the infrastructure panels in areas that will need reinforcement when the conversion is installed. Each panel is precision cut to optimize space and weight, and designed for a specific task. For example, the infrastructure panels used behind the galley are shaped and placed specifically for a galley to be secured.

PRE-WIRE & INSULATION

PRE-WIRE

It is essential to run wiring before components are installed. We use existing wire chases to meticulously route all our main wiring. To protect the wires, we coat the bare chassis metal with a rubber coating that will prevent fraying from the natural movement caused by vehicles on the move. You will not find a “rat’s nest” of wires in an Outside Van, we take immense pride and dedication in making our routing neat and organized so that in the off-chance service is needed behind the walls, the issue can be addressed quickly, efficiently, and preventing unnecessary damage and costs caused by sloppy wiring.

INSULATION

Before the walls go up, we pack every cavity with mold-resistant synthetic insulation to help maintain and regulate interior van temperatures. We first concentrate on the walls and ceiling, and use black-backed 3M Thinsulate sheets that we cut on a CNC to precisely fit each cavity. The insulation is then packed and adhered using a strong spray adhesive to ensure no shifting over time.

WALLS, CEILING, & FLOORING

WALLS & CEILING

The walls of all our models are precision cut and wrapped in proven durable materials to provide a cozy and long lasting interior. First, we CNC cut multiple wooden panels to cover the walls and ceiling of the van. We then apply a thin layer of foam insulation to soften the surfaces which helps prevent damage to the surface materials and helps with sound dampening inside the van. Finally, we wrap each panel with a durable surface material such as Interweave or Sileather.

Featured on every van, Interweave performance fabric is non-allergenic, mildew resistant, and won’t absorb spills or stains. It’s extremely durable and holds up to regular heavy use.  A staple in Outside Vans from the beginning, Interweave is tested and approved!

On select models like Approach, we also  incorporate SileatherSileather is a silicone leather that’s easy to clean, weatherproof, antimicrobial, and highly durable. Silicone has high thermal stability due to its molecular bonding, which means it’s resistant to both low and high temperatures, which vans see a lot of. Because of its low surface tension, it’s stain resistant and hydrophobic.

FLOORING

The core to our floor is a 3/4 inch marine-grade plywood. Marine grade plywood is constructed specifically to resist environments that have rapid humidity changes which prevents warping which further helps ensuring longevity of the conversion. First we apply a layer of foam to the bare chassis floor. This provides an even surface for the plywood floor to sit on, as well as acts as a thermal and sound barrier.

On Approach and Syncline, we wrap the floor with Lonseal Lonridge Vinyl flooring. This durable marine grade vinyl can withstand the most rugged adventures and can be easily wiped down when its time to clean up sand, dirt, mud, snow, or pet hair. Boasting a unique cross-hatch embossed design, Lonseal Lonridge flooring has all the slip resistance a surface needs while also providing a dusting of speckles that help mask the mess.

On Parks, we use a woven synthetic material from 2tec2 which is not only durable and easy to clean, but is a comfortable surface is ideal to kick the shoes off and go barefoot after a fulfilling day exploring the outdoors.

CABINETRY

You won’t find any particle board here. Known for its water resistance, strength, dimensional stability, and longevity, we use marine grade plywood for all of the cabinetry found in our models. Our cabinet shop has its roots in the yacht industry and incorporates specialized construction techniques such as dovetail joints to make the cabinetry extremely strong and up for anything you can throw at it!

These are some of the core features incorporated into our vehicles that most people do not get to see. By focusing on the infrastructure, we can ensure a experience that only an Outside Van can deliver.

Syncline Component Spotlight – A focus on versatility and modularity https://outsidevan.com/syncline-modularity-defined/ https://outsidevan.com/syncline-modularity-defined/#respond Wed, 10 Jan 2024 14:57:08 +0000 https://tempwebsitehost.net/?p=1553

In anticipation of the January 17th public unveiling of Syncline at the Mercedes-Benz Vans booth at the Florida RV Super Show , let’s take a deeper dive the unique innovations that our design and engineering team has incorporated into this special adventure van.

When designing the layout for a 144 chassis, every inch counts, as space is at a premium compared to larger chassis like the 170. In order to not sacrifice functionality and to avoid a cramped living experience, it was important for our team to develop new modular components to be the foundation of what creates the Syncline experience. With this build, we introduce the FoldAway Murphy Bed, the QuickFlip table, and an updated Water Box Shower design that is engineered to fit in the 144 chassis.

FoldAway Bed

Switch easily between prioritizing gear access or a cozy sleeping space with the FoldAway bed. The bed frame itself is made out of lightweight but strong aluminum and is easily deployed with the assistance of the gas-assisted struts, even when loaded with heavy bedding and gear. When stowed, the bed sits vertically and is secured via a push-lock latch. This configuration also exposes a built-in MOLLE panel that can be used to mount and store a variety of gear and pouches. We call this the gear wall and it transforms your van’s garage into a well-organized work and storage space. Whether it is ski, surf, snow, or dirt, the gear wall can accommodate all the gear needed for your next adventure. By having vertical access to storage, you will be spending less time crawling underneath beds and navigating through tight spaces to access your gear. The bed features L-Track compatible mounting points implemented throughout the frame to further expand on the functionality of the underside of the bed frame.

To switch into a sleeping configuration, the bed lowers with the aid of gas-assisted struts which help create a soft and smooth deployment, especially when there is gear mounted to the bottom of the frame. When fully lowered, the space saving folding memory foam mattress can be unfolded to cover the entire sleeping area which is expanded through the use of bump-outs to enable sleeping in a lateral position. There are also two storage cubbies that are exposed at the top of the bed enclosure that are perfect for storing items like clothes and pillows.

To accommodate for taller items like full-frame mountain bikes and e-bikes, we designed the FoldAway bed frame to have recesses so that handle bars can clear when the bed is in the lowered position.

QuickFlip Table

A cornerstone of the adventure van experience is the ability to make not only the interior space a living area, but the exterior as well. To accommodate for indoor/outdoor living, we have implemented the QuickFlip exterior table that is accessed when the slider door of the van is open. The new QuickFlip table design deploys to standard “countertop height” when standing outside of Syncline (Approx. 36″ from ground). Even with the bug screen deployed, this table is quick to deploy and to store with simple, one-handed operation. When deployed, there’s a hidden cubby you can access underneath which is perfect to store items like shoes or air compressor components. The steel construction makes for a sturdy, lightweight, magnetic cooking and prepping area. This unique design sets Syncline apart by not relying on cumbersome cables or straps that can get in the way of table usage. There’s even access to a 120V outlet next to the table for easy kitchen appliance usage.

The table is attached to a low bench seat, and maximizes table space while not sacrificing the open concept of Syncline.

Water Box System

The next feature is the Water Box showering system. We have taken the Water Box shower featured in Approach and have resized and redesigned the layout to better fit in the more compact 144 chassis. The bench seat that the QuickFlip table is attached to folds open to reveal a hidden shower pan, shower mixer, and a showering curtain that connects to four L-Track buttons positioned on the ceiling. This curtain is purposely positioned to encompass the roof-top exhaust van, ensuring a well ventilated showering space that prevents humidity from collecting and ruining the interior. The Water Box has a set-up time of less than 5 minutes. When deployed, it creates an enclosed showering experience that keeps the rest of the van dry while utilizing every inch of available space to the maximum. It offers a great solution for individuals who prefer not to compromise on precious space, yet still desire an indoor shower option. After showering, the curtain folds up flush to the wall for air-drying, and the entire system can be packed back up at a moment’s notice.

The ingenuity of Syncline doesn’t stop with the components and features used for day-to-day adventuring. A top priority of Outside Van when developing our models was to continue the usability behind paneling and boxes so that when it comes time to maintain and service the core systems it could be done with ease and in most cases, without specialized tools.

All systems can be accessed via hatches for day-to-day maintenance. Need to winterize your van? Simply turn your faucets on and pop open the rear water system hatch to access the drain valves and shutoffs in order to clear Synclines plumbing of standing water to protect from cold weather damage.

The power system, plumbing, and heating are all installed using brackets with a focus on clean and organized layouts that can be quickly navigated by service centers and even the end user. Gone are the days of extensive work to access key systems or wading through chaotic piles of miscellaneous wiring trying to diagnose a problem. This leads to a straightforward maintenance routine, which translates to a savings in time, costs, and headaches to keep you out of the garage and on the road.

We are excited to unveil more details of Syncline as we get closer to the public reveal. Stay tuned and until then, we will see you on the outside!

Pacer | Suspension Upgrade featuring Fox Factory and Agile Off-Road Components https://outsidevan.com/pacer-component-breakdown-fox-factory-shocks-agile-off-road-ride-improvement-package/ https://outsidevan.com/pacer-component-breakdown-fox-factory-shocks-agile-off-road-ride-improvement-package/#respond Fri, 08 Dec 2023 08:45:54 +0000 https://tempwebsitehost.net/?p=1640

One of the key features that is the hallmark of an Outside Van is a upgraded suspension system. Enhancing the suspension on heavy conversions like Pacer is a necessity not only for off-road performance, but for on-road ride comfort. The RIP Kit by Agile Off Road featuring components made by FOX Factory are purpose built to help eliminate the sway and harsh ride of the stock Sprinter suspension.

Let’s discuss the shock package on the Pacer. This dually Sprinter 3500 features custom-tuned rear leaf springs, front coil-over struts, FOX 2.0 front shocks, and FOX 2.5 rear shocks to keep this rig under control on and off-pavement adventures.

The 2.0 and 2.5 FOX shocks are tuned using the weight and performance characteristics unique to Pacer. These shocks possess all the outstanding features and benefits of any performance shock, including an aluminum body and an internal floating piston that separates the fluid from the air. This feature fully eliminates any cavitation (air bubbles) you might experience with a steel-bodied shock, which creates a much more consistent and smooth shock absorption experience. These shocks maintain air and oil in two separate places, ensuring your comfort while driving on bumpy and washboard roads.

When adding shocks like the FOX Shocks featured in the RIP Kit, the primary purpose is to mitigate side-to-side sway that a top-heavy and fully-loaded van like an Outside Van will encounter when turning at speed and going over uneven terrain. However, Side-to-side motion is not the only factor that needs to be addressed!

Included with the RIP Kit are upgraded struts, which replaces the factory strut with a more robust strut with a coil-over spring, and an upgraded leaf spring that replaces the factory leaf spring. Both the strut and leaf springs primary purpose is to help counter the added weight from the van conversion by creating a lift between the chassis and the suspension, and dampen the up and down forces that are encountered when going over bumpy terrain like washboard roads or uneven roadways.

As we add the custom build, more weight rests on the spring, so we need a spring that will support the extra weight and keep your ride comfortable. If you were to keep the stock struts and springs, the van would sag under the weight, affecting wheel travel and cause impacts between the chassis and the suspension system. Therefore, by having a proper spring built for the conversion, the weight is adequately supported, and ride height is established with no sagging.

By combining FOX shocks with improved coil-over struts and leaf springs, you get a much more pleasant driving experience. One of the main goals of the RIP Kit is to provide the smoothest and comfortable ride experience on and off the road. More often than not, the benefits of the RIP Kit manifest during long road trips on highways and and curvy mountain roads. As you take turns and go over dips at higher speeds, the ability for a van like Pacer with a RIP Kit to mitigate those effects on its passengers makes a huge difference.

Pacer stands out as one of the most capable vans you can get, alongside our other custom and model builds, thanks to the suite of products that FOX offers.

Get to Know the Materials Used in Approach https://outsidevan.com/get-to-know-the-materials-used-in-approach/ https://outsidevan.com/get-to-know-the-materials-used-in-approach/#respond Thu, 09 Nov 2023 02:33:22 +0000 https://tempwebsitehost.net/?p=1685

At Outside Van, we meticulously select and source top-tier components and materials, ensuring that every element used in Approach is not only durable but also optimized for the demands of life on the road. This results in a product that not only looks and feels better but also outperforms competitors in terms of longevity, comfort, and overall functionality. Our attention to detail and the relentless pursuit of excellence set us apart as a leader in the van conversion industry.

FLOORING: LONSEAL LONRIDGE

This durable marine grade vinyl can withstand the most rugged adventures and can be easily wiped down when its time to clean up sand, dirt, mud, snow, or pet hair. Boasting a unique cross-hatch embossed design, Lonseal Lonridge flooring has all the slip resistance a surface needs while also providing a dusting of speckles that help mask the mess.

Cabinetry: Marine Grade Plywood & Wilsonart HP Laminate

You won’t find any particle board here. Known for its water resistance, strength, dimensional stability, and longevity, we use marine grade plywood for all of the cabinetry found in Approach. It’s then finished with Wilsonart High Pressure Laminate, which is 3X more resistant to wear, scratches, and scuffing, compared to other laminates.

Countertop: Corian

Corian withstands daily wear and tear, keeping its good looks for many years. Thanks to its nonporous surface, it’s antimicrobial because there’s no place for bacteria and mold to take root. As a low-VOC material, it’s free from dangerous chemicals and supports better indoor air quality.

Mattress: RoamRest

RoamRest’s Ultimate Tri-Fold Mattress utilizes a dual-hinged tri-fold design that’s extremely versatile and can be easily stored when not in use.
