Comment on New membership criteria: Simplifying the application process by Angelo Peluso https://owaa.org/new-membership-criteria-simplifying-the-application-process/#comment-352 Mon, 02 Apr 2012 16:30:31 +0000 https://owaa.org/ou/?p=8959#comment-352 There is a huge difference between simplification of the membership process and reducing the standards of performance for membership in OWAA. If those criteria are lessened to a point where the organization allows membership for communicators who derive no income from their work then the net result is to minimize the professional stature of OWAA. I am all for the inclusion of all outdoor media disciplines in OWAA but if we ignore the professional aspect of that membership then we violate one of the fundamental tenets of the OWAA Mission Statement: …to improve the professional skills of our members. In the organization’s quest to increase is membership base and cast a wide net it should not loose sight of the standards that helped grow and sustain OWAA for 85 years.

I really think it is a shame that the OWAA now offers membership to bloggers who do not derive income from their writing. They are NOT professionals. It diminishes the value of membership for those of us who have the skill to be paid for our work, especially those of us who are serious, trained journalists and report in other specialties besides outdoor writing. Any wannabe can blog.
[…]
I am not a snob but I have begun to suspect that, in its quest for members, OWAA is weakening its standards. I have felt this way for quite some time. We have some top communicators in the organization but also lots of borderline members. Many of them would not meet the standards of other groups to which I belong, the National Association of Science Writers and Overseas Press Club of America.

It’s there now (bold and highlighted text– you can’t miss it).

As I have sid more than once this will SAVE OWAA MONEY – It’s to bad so many members just don’t care.

Comment on Outdoor Channel sponsors OWAA Big Game Hunting Contest by Ashley Schroeder https://owaa.org/outdoor-channel-sponsors-owaa-big-game-hunting-contest/#comment-189 Mon, 21 Mar 2011 15:05:37 +0000 https://owaa.org/ou/?p=1532#comment-189 In reply to Ken.

Ken,
Thanks for your note. However, this information pertains to a writing/photography/broadcast contest where the subject of the material submitted for the contest is about big game hunting. It’s not a sweepstakes contest where the winner goes on a hunt. Sorry for the confusion.
Best, OWAA staff

Comment on Fishing the Pere Marquette, a river for all seasons by Esther (Nolph) Munster https://owaa.org/fishing-the-pere-marquette-a-river-for-all-seasons/#comment-205 Wed, 23 Feb 2011 20:58:26 +0000 https://owaa.org/ou/?p=2364#comment-205 Dear Mr. Semion:
Just a note to express many thanks for remembering our father, Zimmy Nolph, in your article, “Fishing the Pere Marquette a River for All Seasons”. He had no desire for notoriety but was adamant about keeping the P.M. as natural as possible. As you well know, protecting this beautiful resource involves educating those who have never grown up on or around it. Please continue your diligence in spreading the word about the conservation of the P.M.
Sincerely, Esther (Essie)
