The rapid expansion of cost-effective, high-throughput genomic sequencing has marked a turning point in global public health. As pathogen sequencing becomes increasingly routine, public health systems require sustainable, interoperable, and reproducible bioinformatics capacity to translate genomic data into timely public health action.
The Public Health Alliance for Genomic Epidemiology (PHA4GE) is a global partnership dedicated to advancing the use of genomics and bioinformatics in public health. We champion open, reproducible, and accessible approaches that support stronger surveillance, improved outbreak response, and more equitable participation in global public health.
PHA4GE works collaboratively with public health agencies, academic institutions, and international partners to develop shared standards, guidance, and best practices that enable genomics to be used effectively across diverse settings.

PHA4GE operates as a global, community-driven alliance. Our work is delivered through internationally led Working Groups, supported by a dedicated Secretariat and guided by independent scientific and strategic oversight.

PHA4GE was founded in response to a shared global challenge. On 24 March 2019, experts in bioinformatics and public health convened at the headquarters of the Gates Foundation in Seattle, USA. Participants agreed that access to flexible, sustainable bioinformatics capacity represented a critical gap for public health laboratories worldwide.
This meeting resulted in the Seattle Agreement, which recognised the need for a global initiative to champion open, reproducible bioinformatics and to support the development of shared data standards, architectures, and methods for public health.
Within seven months, the Public Health Alliance for Genomic Epidemiology (PHA4GE) was formally launched at the Grand Challenges Annual Meeting, held from 27–30 October 2019 at the United Nations Conference Centre in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
