Besides the self-propelling speed of your old snow joe and plastic shell, were there any other disadvantages that you’ve heard or have experience of electric blowers compared to gas snowblowers?

Specific to the Snow Joe that I reviewed…the self-propelled drive is slow compared to almost any two-stage gas snow blower I’ve ever used. My understanding is newer versions of the Snow Joe 2-stage and EGO’s newest 2-stage both move a lot quicker than the original Snow Joe. I think in general gas two-stage snow blowers are built a little tougher and heavier than electric which some may prefer…but also that may be because gas snow blowers have to be built with heavier metal to support a heavier vibrating gas engine.

Here in South Dakota, I thought I’d never be happy with either a gas or electric single-stage snow blower. But I’ve surprisingly found EGO’s single-stage snow blower to meet almost 90% of my needs. In the heart of winter with less chance of wet snow…I found I can clear my driveway at a much quicker pace than any gas than any of my neighbors with heavier two-stage snow blowers. My point is, I’m starting to rethink this notion that bigger, heavier, and tougher snow blowers are better snow blowers. I’m about to write a post talking about my three winters with the EGO snow blower and it’s been mostly a positive experience.

Sorry for a very late response. I didn’t see this comment earlier. I think the EGO does a slightly better at the end of the driveway than the Snow Joe I reviewed. I can move the EGO single-stage back and forth at a quicker pace…where with the two-stage if you get stuck it’s harder to move back and forth. My experience is neither a single-stage or two-stage does well in breaking down snow barriers without some work…and one of the reason they evented a three-stage for this specific situation.

You say that the snow joe is not as good as a 2 stage gas blower. Can you elaborate on that a bit? What are the main disadvantages?

I’m still happy with the older version but I do like the new design. I went through another winter with my snow blower so I’m pretty happy with it to. I can understand the concerns about the EGO trimmer…it sometimes feels a little too to me too (I’m 5′ 5″). It’s too bad they don’t have a telescopic end for the trimmer.

Have used it approx. 4 times so far this year. I love it! Great mower. It comes with a Rapid Charger and only one single 7.5 battery, which is all that is needed to run it. I have a 2 bedroom ranch home located on a standard size city lot. The battery has enough power to mow all of the lawn with one battery cell remaining lit, when I’m done. I also bought an EGO snowblower at the same time, but haven’t been able to use it yet. It came with a Rapid Charger & two 5.6 batteries, which I can use in the lawnmower should I run out of battery power doing the lawn. Also bought the basic EGO leaf blower (love it, too) which comes with the older style charger and small 2.5 battery. Love it, also, that the batteries are interchangeable with all EGO’s battery powered tools, etc. I would buy EGO’s string trimmer, as well, but I am only 5’1” tall and the shaft on that tool is way too long, plus, at 70 yrs. old I have trouble lifting. The trimmer, with the battery attached is way too heavy for me. (The salesman at Home Depot put one together and let me lift it. If the length of the shaft were adjustable to a much shorter length, I might just be able to handle it, but at the extremely long length that it has, it’s perfect for someone 6’1”, or thereabouts, but not for anyone in the short height category.)

The EGO snowblower didn’t have any issue with the heavy snow except being a single-stage it doesn’t throw the snow as far as a two-stage. With several snow events last year, I only had one time where end of the driveway snow was difficult to break through/remove with the EGO. Overall, I’m glad I made the purchase.
