Mobile Broadband for High-Quality In-Vehicle Video Streaming

Using LTE and 5G wireless solutions to enable reliable, high-performance connectivity

Fleet vehicles have evolved into rolling digital workstations. Powerful onboard devices enable reliable video streaming and other critical applications for first responders, businesses, public transit, and school systems. However, the benefits of real-time video and data are only accessible through highly reliable in-vehicle connectivity that securely links footage to the cloud and data centers.

Networking challenges

Inconsistent connectivity

As fleet vehicles move through varied terrain, dense urban areas, or sprawling suburbs, network availability can be strong one minute and weak or lost the next — impacting connection reliability.

Insufficient capacity for high-definition video

Video files typically are quite large. In-vehicle video streaming places a heavy burden on networking equipment, often hindering stream quality and obstructing related applications.

Network management limitations

Within fleets, IT teams often don’t have the resources, personnel, or time to manage configuration changes, set one-off policies, and install security updates one vehicle at a time.

Benefits of LTE and 5G solutions for in-vehicle connectivity

Reliable network access from the road

Featuring support for multiple wireless carriers and interoperability with a wide array of external antennas, Cradlepoint’s NetCloud Service for Mobile and wireless routers with built-in LTE or 5G modems provide dependable in-vehicle network connectivity — and the option of introducing automatic cellular failover to a second network operator if the need arises.

Agility to accommodate future needs

Cradlepoint’s in-vehicle wireless solutions feature integrated Wi-Fi, ethernet and serial ports, and dual-modem capabilities — supporting the latest onboard video platforms and ensuring scalability.

Centralized management for remote troubleshooting

NetCloud Manager provides cloud-based centralized monitoring, configuration, data management, and troubleshooting for IT teams and network administrators — including robust dashboards replete with analytics and insights about connection links and security.

Case Study: Pike County & City of Troy Use LTE to Enable Quicker, More Reliable Communication During Emergencies

Alabama Agencies Deploy Cradlepoint Solutions to Improve Public Safety & Conserve Man-Hours

Customer Profile

Pike County has a population of nearly 35,000 people spread out over 672 square miles. Pike County emergency 911 dispatchers work with the police and fire departments in Troy, Alabama, to constantly improve public safety, as well as communication between the agencies. Troy, the county seat, has more than 19,000 residents and is located just south of Montgomery, the state’s capital.

Agency Needs

Significant upgrades in technology for Pike County and Troy police and fire called for similar progress in their ability to keep public safety vehicles connected 24/7. The MiFi devices they had been using for Internet connectivity didn’t interface with CAD technology and only stayed on for about four consecutive hours before needing to be charged — just half of a standard eight-hour patrol shift. Even then, the batteries were being strained beyond their limits. Every time a vehicle would lose its connection, the MiFi devices had to reboot. In the field, with emergencies and dangerous situations often unfolding at a moment’s notice, downtime is never acceptable.

Solution

After a full bid process and careful product testing, Pike County and the City of Troy chose Cradlepoint NetCloud Service for mobile, including cloud management, a multi-WAN mobile router with embedded LTE, 24×7 support, and a limited lifetime warranty, as the solution to their wide-ranging connectivity and security needs.

“The Cradlepoint routers provided the most cost-effective option among devices that met all of the departments’ needs,” said Troy Chief of Police Randall Barr. “Also, the man-hour savings that come from remote cloud management added a lot of value for us.”

7 Secrets for Getting Digital Transformation Right

A technology-first approach to digital transformation is a recipe for disaster. Start instead by overhauling your organization with a customer-centric end goal in mind.

Let’s talk about 7 Secrets for Getting Digital Transformation Right. One of the habits from Stephen Covey’s bestselling book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is to begin with the end in mind. Putting that in today’s business context, organizations need to figure out what digital transformation means for their business and what their goals are before they go throwing a bunch of new technologies at an ill-defined problem. By focusing too closely on being competitive and innovative and putting the bulk of their efforts into technology, they might be missing the boat.

Technology, of course, is a key driver. IDC estimates $1.2 trillion will be spent on digital transformation technologies in 2017, an increase of 17.8 percent over 2016.

Yet, a significant number of organizations are not getting transformation right because of a fundamental quandary over what digital transformation really is, says Brian Solis, principal analyst and futurist at Altimeter, a Prophet company.

Altimeter’s 2017 State of Digital Transformation report finds that while organizations are investing in innovative technologies, most are lagging or failing to respond to consumers’ new expectations due to “meager digital literacy.” The report also finds many companies have cultures and that “politics, ego and fear are the main obstacles to achieving the collaboration and solidarity needed within companies to make the changes digital consumers want.”

When companies start with a tech-first approach they miss the purpose of what digital transformation is all about, maintains Solis. “I think a lot of times, companies and CIOs in particular, fall into what I call ‘the technology trap.’” Quite simply, he says, it means they are building upon a legacy foundation with new stuff.

“There’s this idea if we use the technology that our customers use or the latest apps and mobile sites or chatbots, we’re keeping up with disruption,” Solis says, “and I think none of this is bad, but it’s a common trap for the evolution of digital transformation.”

To see how it’s being done right, here are seven secrets of successful digital transformations.

1) Digital transformation is really about human transformation

“Having a stellar team who is always willing to embrace technologies helps … as often, the pace of technological change exceeds the ability of formal education to keep up,’’ he says. “I believe having people who are passionate, curious and motivated by the mission is the key to success in achieving a true digital transformation.”

2) Take a customer-centric approach

“The few that are getting it right start with an outside-in approach,’’ says Solis. “They’re looking at something that is either broken or missing to solve a need,” and then tie in ROI and key performance indicators (KPIs) “to demonstrate progress and success.”

They are also focusing on the customer experience first and foremost, he adds. “They look at the customer journey or parts of the customer journey; they look at the mobile journey in particular, and they look at fixing something that could create greater opportunity so they can tie immediate opportunity to it.”

3) Create new teams

CarMax knew consumers wanted a better experience with the ability to buy a car from its website. To do that, officials organized employees into product teams that all have “three critical, non-negotiable roles”: a product manager, a lead developer/engineer and a user experience person. They are supplemented by other development, quality assurance, finance and operations members for anywhere from seven to nine people.

One idea officials wanted to try out was delivering a car to someone’s home. One of the product teams built a mobile app and embedded capabilities so a customer can order a car from a mobile device and have it delivered to their driveway within a couple of weeks. The team “didn’t go for a perfect solution on day one; they got the capability in the hands of a customer quickly and then worked on making it better,’’ Mohammad adds.

4) Fostering collaboration as technology is deployed

As Pitney Bowes was designing curricula around targeted technology areas, officials also formed a tech strategy team and global innovation roundtables to foster greater collaboration. “All teams were sharing practices to test continuous integration and continuous delivery so all apps moving to the cloud were benefiting,’’ says Fairweather.

With help from “trailblazing teams” the company developed a standard tool chain and a standard set of practices that were then shared by building a community around devops, he says.

5) Be unapologetic about change

With a salesforce of 25,000 people, there was bound to be resistance when industrial giant GE began implementing digital technologies into its global sales operation. And there was. Most hadn’t changed the way they sell in over 20 years.

“We did have naysayers [but] if you’re trying to drive any change, don’t worry about them,” says Cate Gutowski, vice president of GE Commercial and digitalTHREAD, the connected digital ecosystem.

6) Adopt a startup mentality

In 2014, AT&T’s prepaid carrier was merged with the newly acquired Cricket Wireless. The two competing prepaid companies needed to transition into one large national player.

Like John Deere and CarMax, Cricket Wireless has adopted a more agile development model, says Darin Morrow, vice president and CIO. That has meant a focus on “operating nimbly and with integrity, making sure that things happen in the right way.”

7) Drive management buy-in

The Altimeter survey indicates that only 40 percent of respondent companies operate with an executive-mandated steering committee responsible for organizational transformation.

Although the C-suite typically decides what the business strategy will be and informs the rest of the organization, Jayaram of John Deere decided to turn that around. “I chose to flip the traditional top-down approach” and instead brought together 40 people “from different levels of hierarchy within IT” to create a new IT strategy for transforming the company to a digital enterprise.

“We went through a whole co-creation process before we took it to the C-suite,’’ he says.  Some who gave input are new to the company but are subject matter experts in user experience or agile development.

“As we went through the rollout of the strategy, we polled about 170 of our fellow colleagues across IT to find out if it makes sense and resonates as directionally correct,’’ Jayaram says. The results were a 4.5 out of 5.

Then Jayaram went to the C-suite and presented the smart connected plan with lean agile methodologies.

“We know people believe this is a life strategy and will transform the company,’’ he says, and leadership is committed, and they can personally see how we can make a big difference.”

4 Digital Transformation Success Stories

The 4 Digital Transformation Success Stories of Walmart, Bed Bath & Beyond, and others are steering digital initiatives to drive growth and efficiency.

These real-world transformation examples detail IT leaders’ strategies and implementations.

You can say one thing about the coronavirus pandemic: Never before has a digital strategy spanning efforts to modernize and transform the business been so important.

Fueled by heightened business resiliency imperatives, CIOs replatformed on cloud software for agility’s sake and digitized processes for contactless customer services. Solutions already on CIOs’ strategic roadmaps but that had gotten bogged down in bureaucracy were suddenly jumpstarted as teams feared being lapped by competitors, says Laura Laberge, McKinsey director of capabilities for digital strategy.

“They were universally aware there was a crisis and that massive change needed to happen because the cost of inaction was so high,” Laberge tells CIO.com.

Here IT leaders discuss some of the progress of their digital work.

Walmart cashes in on cloud, analytics

Walmart’s hiring of Suresh Kumar as global CTO in 2019 signaled a reboot of its evolving technology strategy, which already centered on cloud and machine learning (ML) software.

Kumar has turbocharged these efforts, building out a hybrid cloud platform, which plays a critical role in running ML and other data-intensive applications at the retailer, Kumar said in the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call in February.

“Migrating to the cloud allowed us to keep the site available for our customers, while operating lot more efficiently because we could scale up and we could scale down in a very seamless manner,” Kumar said. For instance, Walmart ran 100% of its US ecommerce and Sam’s Club customer experiences on the cloud during the holiday season, complementing efforts to turn more than 2,500 stores into micro-fulfillment centers to quickly get more goods to shoppers.

The cloud platform, fueled by Microsoft and other partners, connects the company’s new checkout system to nearly 23,000 point-of-sale devices. It also fuels a data lake, enabling Walmart to run advanced analytics to generate insights about store operations and the customer experience. Kumar also said that Walmart is also using algorithms to optimize both the location and quantity of inventory and better forecast demand.

Bed, Bath & Beyond embraces digital-first approach

Despite lagging in technology for several years, Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY) dusted off its IT strategy in 2020, unveiling a transformation strategy predicated on delivering services from any channel, including buy online pickup in store (BOPIS), curbside pickup, and same day delivery.

To support this “digital first” mission, BBBY hired as CTO Scott Lindblom, who is using data, analytics, and agile development to create operational efficiencies and help improve the customer experience. For instance, BBBY has earmarked $250 million for implementation of modern technology platforms over the next three years.

Invesco taps APIs to boost asset management

At Invesco, sharing information about products had long been carefully curated, thanks to compliance and legal requirements. Driven by digital imperatives to boost operations and improve customer service, Invesco, which manages more than $1.4 billion in assets worldwide, began using APIs to surface data about its pricing models, as well as what products customers purchased and from what channels.

Ferguson takes the 360-degree approach to CRM

Single sources of truth are also something near and dear to Michael Sajor, CIO of Ferguson, which distributes plumbing supplies and HVAC equipment.

When joining the company in 2019 to lead its business transformation, Sajor found customer information scattered across multiple siloes. But with local showrooms temporarily closed due to COVID-19 and home renovations spiking, Ferguson needed to rapidly digitize many key aspects of its business.

Bottom line

CIOs who successfully navigated operating during the pandemic built tremendous political capital among their C-suite peers. The next challenge? Sustaining this productivity while identifying and building new digital business products, Laberge says.

This no mean feat: Only 11% of executives believe their current business models will be economically viable through 2023, while another 64% say their companies need to build new digital businesses to remain viable, Laberge says.

Microsoft warns phishing attack is ‘sneakier than usual’

Microsoft’s Security Intelligence team has issued an alert to Office 365 users and admins to be on the lookout for a “crafty” phishing email with spoofed sender addresses that is ‘sneakier than usual’.

Microsoft put out an alert after observing an active campaign targeting Office 365 organizations with convincing emails and several techniques to bypass phishing detection, including an Office 365 phishing page, Google cloud web app hosting, and a compromised SharePoint site that urges victims to type in their credentials.

“An active phishing campaign is using a crafty combination of legitimate-looking original sender email addresses, spoofed display sender addresses that contain the target usernames and domains, and display names that mimic legitimate services to try and slip through email filters,” the Microsoft Security Intelligence team said in an update.

“The original sender addresses contain variations of the word “referral” and use various top-level domains, including the domain com[.]com, popularly used by phishing campaigns for spoofing and typo-squatting.”

The phishing group is using Microsoft SharePoint in the display name to entice victims to click the link. The email poses as a “file share” request to access bogus “Staff Reports”, “Bonuses”, “Pricebooks”, and other content hosted in a supposed Excel spreadsheet. It also contains a link that navigates to the phishing page and plenty of Microsoft branding.

While convincing Microsoft logos are littered across the email, the main phishing URL relies on a Google storage resource that points the victim to the Google App Engine domain AppSpot – a place to host web applications.

“The emails contain two URLs that have malformed HTTP headers. The primary phishing URL is a Google storage resource that points to an AppSpot domain that requires the user to sign in before finally serving another Google User Content domain with an Office 365 phishing page,” Microsoft notes.

The second URL is embedded in the notifications settings links the victim to a compromised SharePoint site. Both URLs require sign-in to get to the final page, allowing the attack to bypass sandboxes.

This campaign is “sneakier than usual”, Microsoft notes. Microsoft has been touting its ‘Safe Links’ Defender for Office 365 phishing protection feature that ‘detonates’ phishing email at the point a user clicks on a link that matches its list of known phishing pages.

Microsoft has also published details on GitHub about the infrastructure linked to the spoofed emails imitating SharePoint and other products for credential phishing.

“The operator is also known to use legitimate URL infrastructure such as Google, Microsoft, and Digital Ocean to host their phishing pages,” Microsoft notes.

Amsterdam has debuted the World’s First 3D-Printed Steel Bridge

Amsterdam has debuted the World’s First 3D-Printed Steel Bridge! Would you walk across a 3D-printed bridge? For folks in Amsterdam, the question now poses a real opportunity. Imperial College of London has spent the last four years working with Dutch company MX3D to develop a 3D-printed steel bridge that would serve as a “living laboratory.” Through a network of built-in sensors, researchers at Imperial College will be able to monitor the bridge’s performance as pedestrians use it daily. The bridge was unveiled this month by Queen Máxima of the Netherlands.

At 12 meters long, the stainless steel pedestrian bridge stretches across Amsterdam’s old and beloved Oudezijds Achterburgwal canal in the Red Light District. MX3D first kicked off its design in 2017, after which the company quickly won the European STARTS prize, a 2018 Dutch Design Award, and the 3D Pioneers Challenge for the bridge’s innovative design. Its construction took six months and 4.9 tons of steel. In 2019, MX3D and Imperial College tested the bridge under a 20-ton load at the University of Twente, and earlier this year, the bridge was finally installed.

So why 3D-print a bridge instead of using older construction methods? MX3D said it wishes to see how the public interacts with 3D infrastructure. The bridge’s sensors (instrumented by AutodeskThe Adam Turing Institute, and the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Studies) collect data related to strain, displacement, and vibration. They also “measure environmental factors such as air quality and temperature, enabling engineers to measure the bridge’s health in real time and monitor how it changes over its lifespan.” Researchers from Imperial College will then input that sensor data into the bridge’s “digital twin,” a dynamic computer model that will subsequently provide insights on how to design and construct similar 3D printed metal structures.

Imperial College reports that 3D-printed stainless steel was tested throughout conception via destructive tensile testing, which provides insight into the yield strength and ductility of a metallic material. Imperial’s Department of Materials conducted tests on both smooth and “as-built” materials to understand the metal’s load-bearing capacity. The bridge’s futuristic geometry was created using silicone casting and laser scanning.

Depending on the success of the bridge, MX3D may develop future 3D-printed infrastructure. Various companies are already working on scaling 3D-printed housing, while others are researching the time and cost advantages of using 3D printing technology over manual construction labor.

The Digital Transformation

IBM has made integrating faster into a hybrid multicloud environment easier with Cloud Pak for Integration. Complex application environments require integration with various microservices along with on-premises and/or third-party databases, and multiple end-user applications over private cloud, public cloud, hybrid cloud or multicloud. Integration of these environments can require substantial time and expense. Without an agile integration platform to deliver, develop and operate in a cloud infrastructure, complex enterprise applications can require months, or years, of development resources to modernize. Consequently, many organizations struggle to complete their digital transformation journey because they simply cannot afford to invest the effort to integrate their applications into a cloud architecture. In this paper we will examine application transformation challenges and how IBM Cloud Pak™ for Integration can accelerate the journey to the cloud.

To unlock the value of their data, organizations need to capitalize more fully on data analytics and artificial intelligence to drive business insights. Here are some tips on getting started.

In today’s enterprise environments, data is being created, captured and consumed at unprecedented rates. With this data explosion comes the need for new, highly scalable platforms for data collection, management and analysis. The ultimate goal is to use data analytics and artificial intelligence to unlock the business value inherent in data, by taking a strategic approach to capitalizing on data.

Business leaders understand the opportunity brought by massive amounts of data, as well as the new imperatives for digital transformation. Consider these findings from a Dell Technologies-commissioned survey of thousands of business leaders around the world:

  • 80 percent of organizations have fast-tracked digital transformation programs
  • 79 percent are reinventing their business models
  • 89 percent recognize that as a result of recent disruption, they need a more agile and scalable IT infrastructure[1]

To successfully navigate this new era, organizations need to transform not only business processes but also the environment upon which the business is built — from the edge to the core to the cloud. Data analytics and AI are at the core of these initiatives, and there are many opportunities for starting on this journey.

The path to data analytics and AI

So how do you get started down the road to greater use of data analytics? One way forward is to follow a path that spans from strategic planning to solution deployment, just as you would for any major IT project. With that though in mind, here is a brief look at one possible path to making greater use of data analytics and AI in your digitally driven enterprise.

Planning for the journey

Building a data-driven organization using data analytics and AI to create insights is a journey. Before your organization starts down this path, it is essential that you gain a clear view of the road ahead, along with a clear plan of action for what you want to accomplish with your data.

In particular, the action plan should cover three critical phases in the data analytics journey:

  • Consolidating data with solutions such as data lakes
  • Using data analytics to drive operational efficiencies and business transformation
  • Enhancing the organization’s ability to act on data by building cloud-native applications

Beginning the journey

For organizations working to consolidate data to extract value from mountains of structured, semi-structured and unstructured data, the next step is to put the right data platforms in place.

For example, Apache™ Hadoop® offers compelling benefits for data storage and processing. In a big advantage, Hadoop can store any kind of data in its native format, from any source, cost effectively and at very large scale, and it can do sophisticated analysis and transformations of that data easily and quickly.

Consolidating data for analytics

Many organizations struggle with this step — either to begin the data analytics journey or to make data consolidation projects successful once they’ve begun. Organizations are often impeded by a lack of Hadoop expertise, and end up spending too much time and effort on the front-end work before they can get to the results of a fully operational solution.

To avoid these pitfalls, it’s important to partner with organizations that offer both expertise and infrastructure for data consolidation. Dell Technologies is ideally suited for this role. It has teamed up with industry leaders — including Cloudera and Intel — to help organizations remove the uncertainty and barriers that may impede the deployment of a consolidated data analytics environment.

Driving digital transformation with data analytics and AI

There are two primary categories of use cases for organizations on the path to data analytics and AI: improving operational efficiency and transforming the business.

Operational use cases include data warehouse optimization, data repository consolidation, data exploration, data analytics and active archives. Business transformation use cases include risk modeling, product improvements, customer loyalty analysis and customer attrition analysis.

The important point here is to identify the data-driven use cases that are essential for your organization, and then make them a priority for your data analytics journey.

Key takeaways

To compete effectively in the new digital era, organizations need to transform people, processes and the IT environment upon which the business is built — from the edge to the core to the cloud. Data analytics and AI are at the heart of this transformation, and there are many opportunities for starting on this journey.

Midsize companies

For midsize companies, speed is everything. New opportunities in the digital economy are emerging all the time, and midsize companies must constantly battle against not just their established competitors but also smaller upstart firms with disruptive new ideas and the large established entities that have an abundance of resources to crush competitors standing in their way.

By some estimates, midsize companies overspend by 40 to 50 percent on their initial computing or storage outlays because they don’t have a solid method for predicting their future growth-related IT requirements. By shifting to an IT consumption model, they can ditch their current spending approach and potentially save up to 30 percent in the process.

Embedded & Edge Solutions – Emerson has developed and deployed an industrial IoT solution that delivers new data insights by partnering with OEM

Driving industrial insights through cloud connectivity

When chemical, oil & gas, and power companies need to control flow and pressure in their process operations, they increasingly use Emerson control valves to do the job. Emerson, a fast-growing Missouri-based Fortune 200 company, with more than 200 manufacturing locations worldwide, provides automation technology for thousands of process industry organizations throughout the world.

These days, though, Emerson customers are demanding more than just reliable control valves. They need help performing predictive maintenance on those valves. “The industry is growing quickly, but there is a lag in expertise because retirement is on the rise,” says Mike Boudreaux, the director of connected services for Emerson. “Many of our customers lack the resources to do things like valve data analysis, which impacts their ability to do predictive maintenance.”

Additionally, industrial Internet of Things (IoT) technologies are enabling Emerson to bring customers data insight from embedded sensors in their digital valve controllers. “Valves today have rich sensor information that can help technicians diagnose problems,” Boudreaux says. “Our challenge is to develop connected services to collect data about our customers’ equipment and then, using that data, help our customers take action on the information we provide them. To do that effectively, we need simple, scalable and secure connectivity solutions.”

Organization needs

Emerson needed to quickly develop and deploy a scalable industrial automation solution that collects IoT data to help customers better manage and troubleshoot control valves

Organization results

• Helps quickly develop solutions at a global scale
• Gives customers a better way to manage and troubleshoot control valves

“The connectivity stack model we’re employing, relying on partners like Dell Technologies, is enabling us to enhance our capabilities much faster than we could on our own.”

Mike Boudreaux
Director of Connected Services
Emerson

Building and delivering a wireless valve monitoring solution

To address its customer demands, Emerson reached out to Dell Technologies—its longtime technology partner—for assistance. Emerson has integrated Dell EMC servers with Intel® Xeon® processors, as well as Dell workstations, for many years. “We have always been impressed with the reliability and support we have received from Dell,” Boudreaux says. Emerson also utilizes Dell software and hardware for its DeltaV system health monitoring software. “We trust Dell, and we were excited to work with them again.”

Emerson chose to build on its existing relationship with OEM | Embedded & Edge Solutions and Intel®—a provider of global manufacturing, distribution, software, and hardware integration. Emerson worked with OEM | Embedded & Edge Solutions to develop a new wireless valve-monitoring solution. The solution collects information from digital valve controllers and sends it through a Dell Edge Gateway to the cloud. The Dell Edge Gateway powered by Intel® is an IoT gateway device that aggregates, analyzes, secures, processes, and shares sensor data at the edge of a network. The data travels from the gateway to the internet and into a Microsoft Azure–based cloud platform. “The Dell Edge Gateway is a key component of the IoT architecture,” says Boudreaux.

Emerson is currently developing a control valve condition monitoring service that uses the Dell Edge Gateway solution. Once ready for official launch, OEM | Embedded & Edge Solutions teams will order the service’s components and ship directly to Emerson service centers. Emerson will then install the service at customer sites.

Helping customers gain new data insights

Through Emerson’s Connected Services industrial customers will have a better way to monitor, manage and troubleshoot critical equipment. Connected Services is a component of Emerson’s Plantweb™ digital ecosystem, a scalable portfolio of solutions that enable digital transformation using innovative sensing technologies, advanced instrumentation, data analytics and services to improve plant performance. “Working with OEM | Embedded & Edge Solutions, we have a partner that’s very interested in solving our customers’ problems,” Boudreaux says. “We are developing secure connected services to collect data about our customers’ equipment, so they can take action based on that data.”

In addition, Emerson plans to work alongside Dell Technologies on future projects. “This is just our first step in what we see as a long journey to transform our services across our entire business,” says Boudreaux. “We are very happy to partner with Dell Technologies on this transformation.”

Our Managed Security & Reporting Services

QCM offers monthly Managed Security and Reporting Services to help small and medium-sized businesses with their IT Security and Compliance. Many SMB businesses do not have the available staff or the ability to continually manage and secure their IT infrastructure that protects their company and their customer’s valuable data. Few have policies in place to respond to a data breach. Left unprotected or ill-protected, a small business can be held liable for stored customer data affected by a breach.

Most standard cybersecurity companies offer standard protection such as Firewall, Anti-virus, Patching, and Spam Filtering that cover standard external threats, but in actuality, most security issues stem from internal threats.

Did You Know?

The involvement of the human element in breaches remained roughly the same as in 2024, hovering around 60%, the percentages of breaches where a third party was involved doubled, going from 15% to 30%.

Data scientists at Stanford University are exploring new terrain for deep learning models using massively parallel processing.

Data science is the discipline that drives one of the world’s fastest-growing — and transformational — technological developments: artificial intelligence (AI). While AI’s historical roots go back to the 1950s, today’s data scientists have pushed its capabilities much further than even a few years ago by applying ever-increasing amounts of massively parallel processing power to their data methods and learning models.

Such is the case at Stanford University, where Jure Leskovec, associate professor of Computer Science, and Rok Sosič, a senior researcher, lead a team of 40 other data scientists. Individually and in teams, Leskovec and Sosič are exploring applications of AI in the form of network analytics and deep learning for a wide range of problems. Network analytics doesn’t refer to IT networks, but rather to finding complex patterns among relationships between numerous data entities. “Our mission is to do groundbreaking research to tackle a variety of extremely challenging research problems. We do this by developing new methods to learn from data, and then use those methods to derive fresh insights from the data that can be applied in practical problems,” says Leskovec, noting that the Stanford lab is the world’s leading developer of AI models for life sciences applications.

Organization needs

To find patterns and insights in multi-terabyte-sized sets of complex, unstructured data requires huge amounts of parallel processing power. Stanford University’s data scientists were using consumer-grade gaming graphics processing units (GPUs) but needed more GPU-accelerated processing power, with central processing units (CPUs) helping to keep the GPU utilization rate maximized while running deep-learning AI models.

Organization results

Broadens the scope and size of problems researchers can solve.
• Enables previously impossible inferences from data.
• Reduces AI algorithm development and machine learning times by up to 50%.
• Provides supercomputer power in a go-anywhere mobile laptop.
• Handles data sets of up to 1.5TB.

“We ran some benchmarks against our servers with lower-end GPUs and found the Dell Precision 7750 with NVIDIA GPUs cut the time by as much as 50 percent.”

Rok Sosič
Senior Researcher,
Stanford University

Broadening research horizons via massively parallel processing

To deliver a quantum leap in the parallel processing power available to the team, the Stanford Data Lab acquired a Dell Precision 7920 Tower Data Science Workstation (DSW). A collaboration with NVIDIA and other leading technology providers such as Canonical (the company behind Ubuntu, the worldwide de-facto Linux OS used in AI on workstations), the Dell Precision 7920 Tower DSW comes as a fully integrated,
ready-to-use AI hardware and software package. This package simplifies user setup, saving days over a bare-metal, build-ityourself approach, not to mention the configuration efforts that would otherwise be required.

Go-anywhere supercomputing fits in a backpack

The Stanford University Stanford Data Lab also acquired a Dell Precision 7750 mobile DSW, a 15-inch laptop with an 8-core CPU, 64GB of RAM and an NVIDIA Quadro RTX 5000 GPU with 16GB of RAM. Like the Dell Precision Tower DSW, this laptop is a fully integrated, ready-to-use AI device with special thermal engineering to dissipate the heat generated when both the CPU and GPU are operating flat-out on an AI model.

Sosič and Leskovec note that the Dell Precision 7750 mobile DSW is especially fast compared to their servers. “We ran some benchmarks against our servers with lower-end GPUs and found the Dell Precision 7750 with NVIDIA GPUs cut the time by as much as 50 percent,” Sosič says. According to Sosič, the Dell Precision 7750 mobile DSW is signed out to one of the team’s data scientists to enable him to develop his AI models at home or wherever he might choose.

“Mobility like this can benefit our researchers who are working from home so they can develop their models using the Dell Precision 7750 and then upload them to our data center for further training,” he says.

In Sosič’s view, the fully integrated, AI-ready Dell Precision DSW technology combined with powerful NVIDIA RTX GPUs are helping the Stanford Data Lab apply the parallel processing needed to continue its breakthrough research. “We’re able to draw data inferences we couldn’t before,” Sosič says. “In fact, having your own personal Dell Precision DSW running NVIDIA RTX GPUs is like driving a Ferrari compared to the trucks, which are shared, that our other lab servers would represent.”

Webinar Available On-Demand – presented by IBM

Organizations continue to struggle with increasing complexity to keep their businesses secure in a hybrid, multicloud world. A distributed workforce, applications that consume data from multiple environments and consumer demand for more digital services have increased the organization’s attack surface and led to a rise in new and more complex threats. Traditional security tools and operations were not built to handle this level of transformation as leaders face too much to do, too many tools to manage, and too many alerts for their frequently understaffed teams.

A modern, open and unified platform approach to security can alleviate these challenges by infusing AI and automation, broadening visibility across tools, and better connecting teams within and beyond the security operations center (SOC).

Yet, not all platforms are equal. A few key characteristics to consider, when evaluating a security platform are —

  • Openness and adaptability of the platform
  • Options for deployment
  • Collaboration options for your different security teams

Join us as we discuss these and other key characteristics, and how the right platform approach can help you better manage your Security Operations Center and drive collaboration between your teams.
