Hi Steve, thanks for your interest. Sorry that I have not maintained the code on this blog post. I no longer have access to the CSV file because I have let the paid subscription to Dropbox lapse. Also, the method described here is a little bit outdated, especially because the sf package was released since I wrote this blog post, which is a much improved interface for working with spatial data and making maps in ggplot2. I would recommend looking for a better solution than this little hack that I wrote. Try the following:

I’d like to try to reproduce the example but I get a 404 error for the NLCD data. Could you fix that link in the R code or post the data on this page?
Thanks!

Yes, it definitely does account for the initial inputs and the ones at intermediate stages. So for example in the model, grain-fed beef would require inputs from the cereal sector, plus inputs from other sectors that are involved in beef production, such as heavy machinery, fuel, etc. Thanks for the input on the figure — I’ll try to make a new version of it where the symbols are separated slightly for better visuals.

It is good to have people like yiu looking at the big picture like this. Hopefully you will be heard by people with more power than me, The graph is great but the foods overlap too much. Q: Does it account for the mass of product/fuel/etc that went into making the unit of mass at the beginning? I would think that if you would add in the mass that goes to make a unit of meat it would drop way down compared to cereals, say.
